IN a recently published volume eintitled,
"One Hundred Early American Paint
illgs," which has just been issued by the
E_lhrich Galleries, New York, we have a
book which will be of universal interest not
only to the students of eairly American
painting
but to all students of Americana.
The hundred paintings,
splendidly
illus
trated in this handsomely botund volume are
all pictures which have passed through the
lhanids of the Ehrich Galleries; many of
thlem have gone to museums or important
priNrate collectionis.
A few of the
pictures
are still in their possession. Of particular
initerest to the serious student is the list of
artists in the back part of this volume, giv
ing the dates of birth and death of some 250
artists, the largest anid miost coml)lete list
of its kind to date.
The selection for reprodtuction incltudes
a
group.
of
pictures
which are truly repre
sentative of the artists included in the book.
The portrait by Benjamiinl West in the pos
session of the Cliicago Art Institute is one
of his finest wvorks. It is a
pictture
wvortlh
of almost any artist of his time. Benjamiin
\West, as is well known, wras born in Amier
ica, Nvent to Englanid, there became
presi
(lent of the Royal Academy and Nvas verv
muclh
appreciated
in his day. Almiiost all of
the American
painter-s

to study vere befriendedl and ta-uglht by
hiim. Another interesting

of his art
is the "Return fromi the Promised Land"
