Taking God Seriously

Dear Friend:Recently, while meditating on various definitions of faith, I came up with my own:
Faithis taking God seriously
This was the result of encountering so many !hristians who claimedto have faith, "ut did not take
God seriouslyTo take God seriously means to take #is $ord seriously If a person speaks to us,
"utwe ignore%or even re&ect%much of what he says to us, we certainly are not taking himseriously In
fact, we are guilty of disrespectThe same applies to God If we ignore or re&ect much of what #e says
to us through theScriptures, we are not taking #im seriously $e are, in fact, treating #im with
disrespect'et this is how many !hristians are relating to God They treat #is $ord like a
smorgas"ord,picking out those portions that appeal to their taste and passing the others "yThere are
four practical ways in which God(s $ord applies in our lives: #is promises,#is commandments, #is
prohi"itions and #is warnings $e will take some e)amples ofeach in turn and consider how they may
apply to us
God(s *romises
The four Gospels contain many wonderful promises of +esus, "ut "efore we claim thesefor ourselves it
is important to ascertain to whom each promise was given The Gospelwriters make a clear distinction
"etween words that +esus spoke to #is disciples and those#e spoke either to multitudes or to
individuals who were not disciples There are morethan ,-- verses recording words spoken to
disciples and a"out ./- addressed to non0disciplesThe distinctive mark of true disciples was
commitment
They had made an unreservedcommitment to o"ey and follow +esus, regardless of personal cost
+esus #imself laid downthis condition:1$hoever does not "ear his cross and come after 2e cannot "e
2y disciple31$hoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot "e 2y disciple345uke 67:89,

<"viously we who are alive today were not present when +esus was actually speaking=efore we
apply any of #is promises to ourselves, we need to ask: >m I the kind of personto whom +esus was
speaking? Do #is promises apply to me? Do I have the right to claimthem?For e)ample, +ohn 67
contains glorious promises, such as:1$hatever you ask in 2y name, that will I do31If you ask anything
in 2y name, I will do it31=ecause I live, you will live also31*eace I leave with you, 2y peace I give to
you 5et not your heart "e trou"led,neither let it "e afraid34verses 6:, 67, 6,, 89;=ut these "eautiful
promises were given only to a group of committed disciples *eterspoke on "ehalf of them all when he
said, 1See, we have left all and followed 'ou3 45uke6.:8.; To claim these promises without fulfilling
this condition is not faith, "ut

$e each need to ask ourselves: >m I a disciple%or &ust a church mem"er?
God(s !ommandments
@ow "y this we know that we know #im, if we keep #is commandments #ewho says, 1I know #im,3
and does not keep #is commandments, is a liar, and thetruth is not in him46A+ohn 8::B7;<ur
response to God(s commandments reveals our true spiritual condition <"eyingthem is proof that we
know GodThe =i"le contains many commandments covering various areas of our lives, "ut
+esussums them all up in one that takes precedence over all others:1> new commandment I give to
you, that you love one anotherC as I have lovedyou, that you also love one another =y this all will
know that you are 2y disciples,if you have love for one another34+ohn 6:::7B:D;=y o"eying this
commandment we fulfill the entire law: 1For all the law is fulfilled inone word, even in this: E'ou shall
love your neigh"or as yourself(3 4Galatians D:67;5ove is the end purpose for which all other
commandments were given: 1@ow thepurpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a
good conscience, and fromsincere faith, from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle
talk 3 46ATimothy6:DB/; >ny religious activity which does not produce love is merely wasted effortIt
is on this "asis that we must assess our o"edience to God(s commandments $e needto ask
ourselves: Is my life an e)pression of God(s love?

God(s *rohi"itions
Do not love the world or the things in the world If anyone loves the world, thelove of the Father is not
in him46A+ohn 8:6D;God here for"ids us to love the world #e compels us to make a choice $e can
love theworld, or we can love God the Father =ut we cannot do "oth It must "e one or the other%
either love of God or love of the worldIn the language of the @ew Testament, 1the world3 comprises all
people and all activitiesthat are not su"mitted to the righteous government of God(s appointed ruler,
+esus !hrist>s such, the world%whether consciously or unconsciously%is in re"ellion against
GodTo love the world, therefore, is to align ourselves with its re"ellionThe pull of the world in all our
lives is e)tremely strong It offers us many allurementsand enticements Some are seemingly
innocent, yet within them is the su"tle poison ofre"ellionThe media is one main channel of the world(s
influence, with all the forms ofentertainment it offers I have come to the conclusion that
1entertainment3 is not a !hristianconcept if it leaves people entirely passive In the =i"le God ordained
for #is people seasonsof &oyous cele"ration, "ut the people themselves were part of the activity They
were nevermerely passive spectatorsFurthermore, much of contemporary entertainment is permeated
"y moral and spiritualimpurity and has a su"tle defiling effect Some years ago Ruth and I watched a
movie thatwas a "rilliant piece of comedy with first rate acting%"ut it contained a few seFuences ofvile
language $e felt inclined to go and watch it a second time, "ut eventually we decidedthat we would
not e)pose the #oly Spirit in us to the vile language in the movieFinally we decided that we would
never voluntarily e)pose ourselves to anything thatglorified sin and dishonored +esus !hrist $e also
make it a principle not to keep in ourhome any "ook or other o"&ect that dishonors +esusDoes that
seem radical? *erhaps it may "e =ut then !hristianity is a radical religion
God(s $arnings
In 2atthew 87 +esus gives a prophetic preview of conditions in the last days #e "eginswith a warning
against deception: 1Take heed that no one deceives you3 In verse 66 #erepeats #is warning: 1Then
many false prophets will arise and deceive many3 Deceptionis the greatest single danger that
confronts !hristians in the last daysIn 2atthew 87 +esus addressed #is warning to the apostles
whom #e #imself hadchosen and who had "een continuously with #im through the :

years of #is ministryIf these apostles needed such a warning, how can any !hristians today imagine
that theyare immune to this danger?'et I have encountered not a few !hristians who seem to feel that
the warning against

deception does not apply to them This reaction is, in fact, an indication that deception isalready at
work in themIn 8AThessalonians 8:,B6- *aul reaffirms the warning against deception in
connectionwith the rise of the antichristThe coming of the lawless one Hthe antichristI is according to
the working of Satan,with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception
among thosewho perish, "ecause they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might "e
saved2any charismatic !hristians have the attitude that any message or minstryaccompanied "y
supernatural signs must necessarily "e from God, "ut this is not true The=i"le indicates that Satan
can also produce various kinds of supernatural signs The gli"acceptance of everything supernatural
as "eing from God actually opens a door todeceptionThere is only one sure safeguard against
deception: it is to 1receive the love of thetruth3 This goes "eyond merely listening to sermons, or even
reading the =i"le It impliesan intense and passionate commitment to the authority of Scripture that
affects every areaof our lives It produces within us an instinctive reaction against any message or
ministrythat is not faithful to ScriptureGod offers to each of us this 1love of the truth3 >re we willing to

"yfaith I "elieve that natural man, left to himself, would never have conceived such a way of

Theimplication is that if you are under the law, sin

have dominion over you If we seek to achieverighteousness "y keeping the law, we will never "e a"le
to escape sin(s grasp5et us look once more at Romans .:67:For as many as are led "y the Spirit of
God, these are sons of GodDo we live as sons of God "y keeping a set of rules? @o $e live as sons
of God "y "eing led "y the #olySpirit That is the only way we can live as God(s mature children@ow
let us look at Galatians D:6.:=ut if you are led "y the Spirit, you are not under the law<nce again, the
message is clear 'ou "ecome a son of God "y "eing led "y the Spirit >nd if you are led"y the Spirit,
you are not under the lawFor many professing !hristians, however, following a set of rules is like a
crutch They limp aroundsupporting themselves on the crutch God says, 1Throw the crutch away and
trust 2eJ

I have discoveredthat it frightens people to trust God(s grace completely $e all want to hang on to a
little set of rules that wekeep That is our crutch =ut it does not workJ $e must "ecome completely
dependent on the #oly SpiritGod(s way to righteousness and holiness is not through struggling, "ut
through yielding%yielding to the#oly Spirit !ome to the end of your efforts and say, 1#oly Spirit, take
over I cannot handle this situation%"ut 'ou canJ3 It does not mean you do not need willpower It
means you need to use your willpower in adifferent way 'ou have to use your willpower to
not
do it "y yourself, "ut to trust the #oly Spirit=y nature, I am an independent, strong0minded person
>ny time I have a pro"lem, my natural instinct is towork out the solution for myself It has taken me
years to come to the place where I do not do that Instead, Isay, 15ord, what is 'our solution?3 <ften,
God(s solution is different from anything I myself would ever havethought of The !hristian life is not a
life of struggle, it is a life of yielding%to the #oly Spirit within usIn Romans chapter 9, *aul illustrates
this "y an e)ample from the marriage relationship The fruit of yourlife will not "e determined "y the
amount of effort you make, "ut "y the person to whom you are married If you are married to your
fleshly nature, you will "ring forth the works of the flesh =ut if%through the #olySpirit%you are united
with the resurrected !hrist, through that union you will "ring forth the fruit of the Spirit
+ust Stay !onnected
In +ohn 6D:6 +esus compares our relationship with #im to a vine and its "ranches:I am the true vine,
and 2y Father is the vinedresser

The vinedresser is the one who does the pruningIn verses 7 and D, +esus goes on to say to #is
disciples:>"ide in 2e, and I in you >s the "ranch cannot "ear fruit of itself, unless it a"ides in the
vine, neithercan you, unless you a"ide in 2e I am the vine, you are the "ranches #e who a"ides in
2e, and I inhim, "ears much fruitC for without 2e you can do nothingThe "ranches of a vine do not
"ear grapes with a lot of effort They do not make resolutions and say:1@ow I(m going to "ring forth
grapesJ3 They "ear grapes simply "y "eing united to the trunk%the stock of the vine The same life
that is in the trunk flows through the "ranches, and the life in the "ranches "ringsforth the appropriate
kind of fruit +esus said, 1I am the vineC you are the "ranches If you will remain relatedto 2e%&oined
to 2e%you(ll "ring forth much fruit3+esus goes on to talk a"out pruning $hen a vinedresser prunes a
vine, he is ruthless #e cuts the "ranchesall the way "ack to the stem 'ou would think that vine is
never going to "ear fruit again =ut the ne)t year,it is more fruitful than "eforeSome of our most
painful struggles may "e the result of "earing fruit Right now, the Father may "epruning you =ut do
not give upJ Do not say, 1#ow could this happen to me?3 Simply yieldJ Surrender tothe vinedresser>ll
three *ersons of the Godhead are involved in this process of "ringing forth fruit The Father is
thevinedresser +esus is the vine >nd the #oly Spirit is the life that flows through the vine and into
the"ranches The #oly Spirit is the one who actually produces the fruit It is not the fruit of our "est
efforts It isnot the fruit of religion It is the fruit of the #oly Spirit

5et me share with you a little para"le to make this vivid I am sharing this out of my own e)perience I
knowwhat it is to struggle to please God with my own efforts I have tried at times to "e more
1religious3 =ut Ihave felt so frustrated I have not known what to doJ =ut I have learned that this is &ust
part of the processthat makes our walk with +esus come aliveThis para"le concerns a map and a
guide: Suppose you are in a certain place and you need to find the wayto a distant destination over
country that you have never traveled God gives you two options 'ou can havea map, or you can
have a personal guide'ou are strong 'ou are clever 'ou are self0reliant God says to you, 1$hat do
you want, the map or theguide?3 'ou respond, 1I(m good at reading maps I(ll take the map3 Knowing
the right direction to take, youset off down the road The sun is shining, the "irds are singing and you
feel happy 'ou say to yourself,1This is easyJ This is a piece of cakeJ3>"out three days later, you are
in the middle of a &ungle It is midnight It is raining #ardJ Furthermore,you are on the edge of a
precipice 'ou do not know whether you are facing north, south, east or west =ut agentle voice says,
1!an I help guide you?3 >nd you reply, 1<h, I need youJ I need youJ3 The Guide says,1Give me your
hand and I(ll get you out of this3 >little while later, you and your Guide are out on the roadagain and
walking along side "y sideThen it occurs to you, 1I was pretty silly to get so panicky &ust a"out "eing in
that &ungle I could havemade it on my own3 So you turn around to e)plain this to your Guide, and the
Guide is not there anylongerJ 'ou shrug your shoulders and say, 1$ell, I can make it on my own,3 and
you set off again>"out two days later, you are in the middle of a "og and you sink a little deeper with
every step you take'ou do not know what to doJ 'ou think to yourself, 1I can(t ask for help again 5ast
time I got it and I didn(tdo the right thing3>t this moment, you discover to your astonishment that the
Guide is right "eside you once more #e says,15et me help you,3 and you start off together again>t
this point, you remem"er the map that is still in your pocket So you take it out and offer it to theGuide
saying, 12ay"e you(d like that3 =ut the Guide says, 1Thanks, I know the way, I don(t need the
map3Then he says, 1>s a matter of fact, I made the map3The map, of course, is the law It is perfect
Lvery detail is e)actly right Lvery single item in the

geography is correctly marked It is up to you to decide, 1I won(t take the map I(ll trust my Guide3$ho
is the personal Guide? The #oly Spirit, of courseJ#ow often does this kind of thing need to happen?
#ow many times will we go "ack to trusting our ownwisdom and our own cleverness and in this way
snu" the #oly Spirit?
The =ride $ho Trusted #er Guide
Genesis 87 is a vivid account of how >"raham o"tained a "ride for his son Isaac #e sent his servant
"ack tothe land of 2esopotamia to find a young woman of his own family line, which%according to the
culture of that time%was an essential reFuirementThis story is a para"le acted out in history
>"raham is a type of God the Father Isaac is a type of +esus!hrist the Son The chosen "ride 4whose
name was Re"ekah; is a type of the church Then there is one othermain character who remains
nameless: the servant The servant is a type of the #oly Spirit Genesis 87contains the #oly Spirit(s
self0portrait It is characteristic that he does not even name #imself The #olySpirit never draws
attention to #imself, "ut always works to "ring glory to the Father and the SonThe servant sets off,
taking with him ten camels laden with various gifts, having in mind that he is goingto choose a "ride In
the 2iddle Last, whenever you make a significant choice and "uild a relationship, youalways give a
gift If your gift is received, you as a person are received If your gift is re&ected, then you arere&ected
This is an a"solutely critical part in esta"lishing any relationship#aving lived in that part of the world, I
can tell you that camels carry an immense amount of "aggage%and the servant is making the trip
with no less than ten camelsJ #e arrives at the place where they water theflocks and he prays: 1I(m
going to ask one of these young women to draw water for me 5et the one who isthe chosen young
woman say, EI(ll draw water for you and for your camels as well(3 4=ear in mind that acamel can drink
forty gallons of water So, this chosen young woman would "e volunteering to draw up tofour hundred
gallons of water;So here comes Re"ekah, and the servant says, 1Give me something to drink3
Re"ekah replies, 1!ertainlyJ>nd I(ll draw for your camels as well3 Then the servant says to himself,
1This is the girlJ3 5et me add thatRe"ekah is a pattern of faith and works It takes a lot of work to draw
water for ten camelsThen the servant pulls out a "eautiful &ewel and places it on Re"ekah(s forehead
The moment she acceptsthe &ewel, it marks her as the appointed "ride $hat would have happened if
Re"ekah had refused the &ewel?She would never have "ecome the "rideJ $hat can we say of a
church that refuses the gifts of the #olySpirit? It lacks the distinctive marks of the "rideJRe"ekah never
had a map She had never "een where the guide was taking her She had never seen eitherthe man
she was to marry or his father =ut she had a guide who knew the wayJ #e also knew "oth the
fatherand the son #e could supply her with all the information she neededThat is how it is with you
and me $e cannot make it with a map, "ut we must have a Guide In this lifewe will pro"a"ly never
see the Father or the Son or the place that is our destination =ut if we allow the #olySpirit to lead us,
#e will show us the way #e will also "e our source of information concerning the Fatherand the

such, needs to "e kept free from idols and cursed things 2any "elievers unknowingly have things in
their home, that are doorways for demons to enter in $hat you "ring into your home 4or even your car
