G r a d e 7 C u r r i c u l u m

E n g l i s h - L a n g u a g e A r t s ( E L A )
7th grade ELA follows a balanced literacy approach incorporating
the main skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. These
life-long skills are fostered via classroom reading and writing
assignments. All students also take a half-year research class where
they use various technological tools to create a research paper. In
the spring of grade 7, all students will take the NYS ELA assessment.
Ma t h e m a t i c s
The 7th grade math curriculum encompasses rational numbers and
exponents; proportionality and linear relationships; introduction to
sampling inference; and the creation, comparison, and analysis of
geometric figures. All students will have a math lab attached to
their classes which is used for more in-depth study of topics. In the
spring of grade 7, all students will take the NYS math assessment.
S c i e n c e
7th grade science classes focus on physical science. Specifically
topics such as motion, energy, nuclear reactions, chemistry, waves,
simple machines, and classification of matter are studied. Students
will complete labs by working collaboratively with their peers, they
will engage in critical thinking, and complete reading and writing
assignments based on course topics.
S o c i a l S t u d i e s
The grade 7 social studies curriculum explores history from the time
of early exploration through the Civil War. Teachers will utilize
portfolio assessment; provide students with opportunities for
research; and teach students how to analyze primary and secondary
source documents using close reading methods and examination of
text evidence.
Wo r l d L a n g u a g e
By now all incoming 7th graders have chosen between French and
Spanish for their foreign language course. Research has shown that
learning a foreign language improves ones knowledge of English
structure and vocabulary. Students will learn the basics of French
and Spanish communication and vocabulary. This course represents
the first half of a two year language sequence for high school credit.

Agenda Book
Each child will receive an agenda book during the first week of school. The
student planner serves many purposes. The agenda book contains the
schools code of conduct and, most importantly, space for your child to
write down all homework assignments. The agenda book is also a great
communication tool between home and school as many teachers will write
notes to parents; parents are asked to check their childs agenda book every
night.

News l et t er
Each quarter, we will send out newsletters with information about whats
new at ESM JHS. These will include information on the different team
events, school wide events, and other important messages.

Webs i t e
The Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School website is a great place to find
up to date information about school events. Please check back frequently if
you would like to be in the know.

7t h Grade

All of our seventh grade academic
classes (ELA, math, science, and SS) are
held in the 1500 hallway (JHS wing). It
is here that all of our teams are housed
so students have the experience of a
school within a school.

Teami ng
Our seventh graders will all be a part of an academic team, further
enhancing the school within a school concept. Each team is
comprised of a common set of teachers for all of the students on
that team; students will have the same teachers for each of their
academic classes (ELA, math, science, social studies).

PBI S
Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a systematic
approach to proactive, school-side behavior. The purpose of our
PBIS program is to promote, recognize, and reward responsibility
for positive behavior and citizenship.
Each quarter, students will have the opportunity to earn Shark Bites
from their teachers for demonstrating positive behavior
characteristics and good citizenship. These Shark Bites can be
redeemed for prizes from our PBIS cart and for quarterly ice-cream
socials during lunch periods.
