Research Proposal for the Recommendation Report
Proposals are one of the most common and useful forms of academic and workplace writing.
For this assignment, you will prepare a two-page, single-spaced proposal outlining your plans for the
recommendation report. This assignment is worth 150 points of the final course grade.
The research proposal has three main functions:
1. Allows you to finalize your topic and research direction
2. Serves as an organizing tool
3. Allows potential issues to surface early on
For these reasons, you may not change your topic once you have submitted your proposal.
The proposal should include bold headings for each of the main topic areas described below.

Proposal Criteria
Working title: The proposal should include your name, date, and a clear and descriptive working title for the
project: Proposal to Investigate the Impacts of

Introduction: A successful proposal should persuade the reader that your topic is timely, significant, and
worth the time and effort youll spend on the project. In this section:
Identify the topic for your recommendation report and its relevance to your major field. Here, be
sure to provide clear context and a logical progression of information leading up to the statement of
your topic idea.
Identify the specific primary audience (client, colleague, person, or organization) to whom youll
make your recommendation.
Describe why the topic is timely and important.
Background: Provide some background and context related to the problem you are trying to solve. Define
any technical terms as necessary.

Proposed research methods: Offer a description of your primary and secondary research methods. For
example, note who you plan to interview for the report. In addition, you should describe the types of
sources you plan to research, such as scholarly journals, trade journals, popular sources, credible online
sources, and so on. Describe any preliminary research youve already conducted for the project.
Timeline for completion: Provide a brief project timeline that describes main project goals and when you
plan to complete them. Consider research tasks, such as scheduling and conducting your interview,
conducting library and online research, and writing and editing the report itself.

Conclusion: Provide a brief paragraph reiterating the need for your project. Note any questions or open
issues that have come up, or that you anticipate coming up, during your research.

Note: The proposal should be clearly written and carefully edited. Pay close attention to issues of parallel
structure, consistent and appropriate uses of terminology, issues of clarity and concision, use of active voice,
and other topics covered in class.

Monday, April 28: Final draft of proposal due
