PASTORS PIECE
The Friend Who Is Come
I still have many things to tell you, but you
cant handle them now. But when the Friend comes,
the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand
and guide you into all the truth there is. He wont
draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of
what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I
have done and said. John 16:4-14b MSG
We celebrated Pentecost June 8. What an
exciting morning with our Confirmands heartfelt testi-
monies, Seth Baylesss baptism, and Confirmation of
Seth, Blake Short and Adam Hoefer. Congratula-
tions guys, this is the beginning of the rest of your
lives in communion as members of Gods House,
having shared in the ritual celebrations of this day!
Pentecost is the birthday of the church, when
God the Holy Spirit becomes a part of all who believe
and trust in our Source. Not too many churches
make a very big deal about Pentecost because,
maybe, we seem less able to pin down just what
happens; its a Mystery. In this day and age, reason
seems to be desired more than the Mystery to which
we raise our hope. How can we explain a feeling of
joy when there seems nothing tangible to define it?
Must joy be defined? To some perhaps. How can it
be explained when interruptions in plans for the day
lead to an unexpected blessing of running into some-
one very special just at the right time? Or avoiding a
potential catastrophe that would have happened if
one was right on time. How to explain anothers
involvement in that same catastrophe, when one was
spared its effects?
And deeper yet is the panic that can happen
when the unknown (of any sort) approaches or
looms as a distant, dark mist. Fear, doubt, survivors
guilt, panic, distressHow does one move from day
to day, putting one foot in front of the other, when the
next step might be a misstep, a crash, or worse?

TrustAccording to the New Merriam-
Webster Dictionary trust (among many definitions)
means: assured reliance on the character, strength,
or truth of someone or something; a basis of reliance,
of faith or hope; a confident reliance. Thats
comforting!
Now already we come to Ordinary Time in the
Churchs calendar, when the chancels paraments are
changed to green (thank you Mildred!!! And
Martha!!!). Our remembrance of the Holy Trinity is
celebrated each week in Worship and mundane life
as we place one foot in front of the other, each day
until the anticipation of Advent and Christmas once
again fills our hearts with hope and expectation
Yet remember, as fuzzy as understanding of it
may seem, God the Holy Spirit is with you every
moment of every day, comforting in loss, encouraging
in struggle, exhorting in promise, celebratingeach
step we take into the unknown, lighting and lightening
the Way.
In Gods Redeeming Love,
Pastor Kristin

COUNCIL COMMENTS
Can you believe it? Summer is upon
us. Why on earth are they called "lazy
days"? Seems like things always kick into high gear
about this time of year. Your Council has also been
working hard on several projects.
We have just implemented a new policy for
the use of church resources such as tables and
chairs. A sign-out sheet will be posted on the
storeroom door for those wishing to check out these
items. The sign-out sheet will include party's name,
number of tables/chairs, date needed and date of
return. This will ensure that these items are
scheduled and available for planned events. No
items should be removed without being signed out.
Important! - There will be a special
congregational meeting on July 6th following the
morning worship service. Council is seeking
approval for the purchase of a new copier/
printer. Please make plans to attend.
And finally, Thank You... Have you noticed
the beautiful cannas thriving in front of the south
entrance? Sometimes, in our hectic schedules, we
forget to slow down and notice the small things and
the beauty of nature, even the things right under our
noses. So maybe those "lazy days" are
appropriately named after all?
Board of Christian Education
The back to school bash will be
attending the T bones game on
August 16th. There is a sign up
sheet out for everyone to sign if
interested in going. If you have any
questions please visit with any
member of the committee.
Now the heart is so full that a drop overfills it,
We are happy now because God so wills it;
No matter how barren the past may have been,
T is enough for us now that the leaves are green;
We sit in the warm shade and feel right well
How the sap creeps up and the blossoms swell...
The breeze comes whispering in our ear,
That dandelions are blossoming near...
Every thing is upward striving;
T is as easy now for the heart to be true
As for grass to be green or skies to be blue,
T is the natural way of living

B & T Gospel Jazz and Zion UCC Choir!
Sunday, June 22, our faithful choir sang two songs and Pastor Kristin read Psalm 150 at Zion AME's
Gospel Jazz service. There was an amazing lunch beforehand, and plates to go afterward. Zion
AME's choir sang, followed by our choir. Next we listened and moved to the amazing jazz that was
lovingly presented by Rev. Tommy Lindon on voice and drums, an amazing bass guitarist, an incredi-
ble keyboardist, and a very talented pastor and jazz singer from Kansas City. We were truly blessed
to be a part of this amazing worship experience right here in Mayview! And our relationship with Zion
AME grows. What a loving congregation. Pastor Kristin received a call from one of its members last
night, with compliments on our sound, and a heartfelt thanks for our presence.

The Woven Web Or Why Our
Church is Autonomous, Yet Con-
nected
Every spider weaves its own web. The web is every-
thing to that spider - its means for survival, its home,
shelter, source for meals, etc. The spider when cre-
ating the web, first sends out a spinner-thread,
catches a breeze and aims for a solid surface in
which to land and attach that thread. Once attached,
the next thread must be attached at another solid
point and so on. Where would the spider be if that
web were not attached to something firm and
rooted?
Once the web is woven, the spider can sense web
movement acutely. Yet it knows the
difference between when the web is
lifted by the wind and when an insect
gets caught in the web. It can sense
the size of the insect; and when
there is a larger (a person?) danger
to the web.
Our churches are like the spider's web: each church
is unique - it has its own life, style and membership.
Yet the congregation's "web" is attached to rooted
surfaces - it must be in order to achieve what it
needs. Like a web, it is interconnected to the com-
munity, other churches, the Association, the Confer-
ence, and the denomination. When it is not, far less
"nutrition" comes its way, attachments become frag-
ile, and the possibility of damaging winds always lin-
gers.
While each of our churches is autonomous, each
gains from its interconnectedness - through re-
sources, mission partners, collective projects, sup-
port in times of transition and financial need, not to
mention the larger family of faith which can do so
much more when it works together. Most importantly
our Church is firmly connected to our Firm Founda-
tion -Jesus Christ our Lord.
What are some of the connecting points of your con-
gregation?

HEADS UP!
Steppingstone's Fall Shower will
be September 8, 2014. They need kitchen
supplies, bedroom supplies (single bed),
bathroom supplies, living room sup-
plies. Go crazy, have fun! These kids
work really hard to complete their educa-
tion and become responsible adults, and
when they leave, they get to keep their
household supplies. So, Steppingstone is
in constant need of new supplies.
The Lafayette Area UCC churches have
been partnering with Steppingstone since
1978--this is a local mission and very im-
portant to struggling young persons in our
state. Steppingstone tries to keep up to 50
persons at their location in Independence,
so the need is great. They work hand-in-
hand with Social Services to serve the
needs of this area.
Please begin bringing supplies as soon as
you can. Thank you!

Be beautiful inside, in your hearts, with the
lasting charm of a gentle and quiet spirit that
is so precious to God. 1 Peter 3:4 (TLB)
Dear Lord,
There is no greater feeling
of liberation than to experi-
ence this freedom from sin
and death that you have
provided for me through
Jesus Christ. Today my
heart and my soul are free
to praise you. For this I am
very thankful.
On this Independence Day I am reminded of all
those who have sacrificed for my freedom, following
the example of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not
take my freedom, both physical and spiritual, for
granted. May I always remember that my freedom
was purchased with a very high price. My freedom
cost others their very lives.
Lord, today, bless those who have served and con-
tinue to give their lives for my freedom. With favor
and bounty meet their needs and watch over their
families.
Help me to live my life in a way that glorifies you,
Lord. Give me the strength to be a blessing in some-
one else's life today, and grant me the opportunity to
lead others into the freedom that can be found in
knowing Christ. Amen

WHAT IS PEACEMAKER FELLOWSHIP?
A corps of church leaders trained in conflict reso-
lution and ready to serve the Church as coaches
when discord surfaces in local congregations and
other settings for ministry.
The Peacemaker is not a mediator or a therapist
but is a mirror and a coach. The task is to help
the parties see what is happening (by being a
clean mirror) and to help them know what to do
(by being a skillful coach).
The Peacemaker is present in the life of the con-
gregation asking the questions:
* What are the conflicts that are arising now?
* What do you notice the Holy Spirit prodding you
toward by the presence of observed discord?
* What do you notice are points of tension or dis-
tance arising in your common life and what does
that say about possibilities for new ways of being
the Church?
Ongoing support and collaboration
The Missouri Mid-south Conference will create
structures for supporting and utilizing the re-
sources of Peacemakers. Peacemakers will meet
periodically with each other in geographic areas
based on need and in a manner appropriate to
their circumstance (some teams may choose to
meet by electronic means). All Peacemakers will
gather annually to review the experiences and re-
new their skills.
***Pastor Kristin will be a part of the Peacemaker's
Fellowship

Please keep in mind that as families grow and expand, blend together and/or move, it
can be a challenge to recognize and keep names straight. If you notice that a loved
one is not on the list, its as simple as calling or emailing to let us know their name
and date. Thanks for your patience, help and understanding! We are working hard to
