Building log furniture is easy as...
DRILL HOLES CUT TENONS ASSEMBLE
DRILLING COMPONENTS:
Cut components to lengths.
Drill holes (mortise) in components using forstner or spade bits at locations
dimensioned in each plan.
Drilling depth for mortises = one third to one half log diameter unless
otherwise specified.
SAFETY:
Be sure that you follow all shop rules listed from your supplier of tools,
equipment, fixtures, and anything youll be using to construct this project. We
assume no responsibilities for any injuries caused while building these projects.
GENERAL SAFETY RULES:
Never operate tools under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.
You must wear safety glasses, dust mask and all other safety devices that are
required.
Before installing or removing a tenon cutter, the drill must come to a complete
stop and the power must be disconnected.
Do not wear gloves, loose clothing or other items that may get caught in the
moving parts.
Never operate tenon cutter tool in a drill press, lathe or any other device
except for a 1/2 hand drill.
The log must be secured in a vise or clamp before beginning. Failure to do so
may cause bodily harm.
GETTING STARTED:
These plans are a simple way to get you started making rustic furniture. These
plans assume you have some previous woodworking experience along with the
basic shop tools. The unique thing about making your own rustic furniture is that
you can add your own touch of character and customize it to any size or shape
you like. Always keep in mind that rustic furniture is not meant to be perfect in
shape and form as in traditional furniture and that is what gives it character and
personality just like the creator of the piece.
COMMON ITEMS NEEDED:
Peeled logs
Wood glue, wood screws
1/2 drill
Lumberjack Tools dual blade tenon cutter
Forstner or spade bit
Draw knife
Chop saw, or hand saw
Vise or Log mate
Palm sander & sand paper
Finish of choice - polyurethane, lacquer or oil
Basic shop tools (tape measure, pencil, cut off saw, cordless drill, safety
glasses, etc.)
GENERAL SAFETY AND BASIC INSTRUCTION
MORTISE (HOLE)
TENON
TENON CUTTING:
Measure depth of mating mortise hole, then subtract 1/4.
Cut tenons with Lumberjack Tool dual blade tenon cutter.
If your log is larger than the cutter will accept, then taper down the end
with the draw knife.
Cutting a straight tenon is very important for reducing assembly issues.
See illustrations below.
GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND GLUE UP:
With all of your pieces for the project processed, this is a good time to do any
sanding. After sanding, dry test fit all components. It is very important to
ensure that all of your pieces are correct and fit properly. Do not attempt to glue
together your project without first doing a dry test fit. Have some shop towels
ready to wipe up any excess glue. Place glue on ends of tenons and in mortise
to begin assembling.
TIPS:
If your logs bind-up, twist or spin them to find the natural position.
Make sure pieces are square & plumb because once the glue dries, there is
no changing.
FINISHING:
Select the stain and finish type to meet your needs. Make sure you have done
all of your prep work and that your piece is clean. Follow all instructions from
your stain and finish suppliers to ensure you get the desired results.

Assemble:
Apply glue to the tenons of legs (ezreindeer_C) and angled holes of body
(ezreindeer_A). Assemble parts (ezreindeer_C) to (ezreindeer_A). Apply glue to
tenons of (ezreindeer_D), one top hole of (ezreindeer_A) body, and the single
hole on bottom of head (ezreindeer_B). Assemble (ezreindeer_D) to body hole.
Then assmeble the head to the neck piece. Apply glue to the tenons of ears and
tail (ezreindeer_E) and remaining holes of body (ezreindeer_A) & head
(ezreindeer_B). Assemble the tail and ears in the remaining holes. Turn the head
to desired position. Using branches for antlers drill holes sized according to
diameter of branches at an angle. See cover page picture. Apply glue and
assemble.
