400 Brinell Plate
This is an abrasion resistant steel plate produced to give an optimal combination of hardness, toughness and
weldability.
Suitable applications: Bucket lips Buildozer blades Chutes Mine scrapers Dump truck bed and liners Fan
housingliners Blastingscreens Brick and tile dies Mixer blades Sand and shot blastingequipment Shovel
buckets.
These steelsare intended for structural work where no significant formingor bendingmust be done. The grade
should be selected dependingon strength required.
Welding: 400 Brinell isreadilyweldable. Low hydrogen electrodes( Type EN110X X or E70X X ) must be used to avoid crackingin the heat affected zone. In
addition low tensile strength consumablesshould be used to minimize residual stress. High heat inputswill reduce the hardnessin heat affected zone and should
be avoided.

LLOYDS ship hull steel - 2001
Lloyds Register of Shipping, are defined as mild steel with a tensile strength rangingfrom400 to 520 Mpa.The requirements
apply to steel plates not exceeding30 mmin thickness.Four grades are specified, namely A,B,D and E. Although these grades
have the same tensile strength, they are characterized by an increasingdegree of toughness.
The higher strength grades of steel are the grades with a minimumspecified yield strength equal to or in excess of 355 MPa.
Three grades are specified namely AH36,DH36 and EH36.The higher strength grades have a
minimumtensile strength of 490 MPa.
Welding: 400 Brinell is readily weldable. Low hydrogen electrodes ( Type EN110X X or
E70X X ) must be used to avoid crackingin the heat affected zone. In addition low tensile strength
consumables should be used to minimize residual stress. High heat inputs will reduce the
hardnessin heat affected zone and should be avoided.

Cold Rolled Flat Sheets
Corrosion Prevention
Cold rolled sheet, when not adequately protected,is susceptible to corrosion, the user is advised to take the followingprecautions:
a. Cold rolled sheet can be ordered as follows:
i) With a rust prevention oil. The protective oil, which isused to treat rolled sheet, hasa mineral oil base with resistance to corrosion, stainingand emulsification. It can be removed by
usingconventional hot alkaline cleaningmethodsor solvents. The oil iscompatible with drawingcompoundsin common use for drawingand pressingoperations.
ii) Treated with a skin passing/ wet temper corrosion strainingfluid. The fluid isnot compatible with paint systemsand can be removed byconventional hot alkaline cleaningmethodsor
solvents. A corrosion free strip cannot be guaranteed due to the limited corrosion protection provided.
iii) Hard, un-annealed without rust preventative oil, but with a thin layer of residual rollingoil. ( Not adequate to guarantee productsfree from rust)
iv) Drywithout anytemporarysurface corrosion protection and no guarantee against corrosion isprovided.
b. Store the sheet under low humidity (less than 40%) and constant temperature conditions. High humidity accelerates corrosion. stagnant air, which is subjected to changes in
temperature, precipitates moisture and consequently, corrosion of the sheet takes place.
c. If it is impossible to control humidity or temperature or temperature, the sheet must be stored where good air circulation exists.
d. When bundles of coils have been opened the material must be used with aminimumof delay.
e. In the event of material cominginto direct contact with water,it should be treated with an approved dewateringoil and used as soon as possible.

ELECTRO-GALVANIZED SHEET
Electro-galvanised steel sheet consists of a cold rolled steel substrate coated with zinc by
electrolytic deposition on a continuous line. The electro-galvanizing process not only allows
accurate control of the thicknessof the zinc coating, but also permitsthe coating of either one or
both sidesof the sheet, and the coating of different thicknessesof zinc on the two sidesof the
sheet.
Electro-galvanized steel sheet isintended for applicationsinvolving all forming, drawing, stretching
and bending processesduring the manufacture of articles. A range of coating thicknessesisoffered

Chromadek Sheet & Colour Chart
Chromadek
Chromadekfor interior applications is available as hot dip galvanized steel sheet which is pre-painted on Arcelor Mittal Steel South Africas coil coatingline
with special high quality paint coatings.Chromadekis a finished material with decorative coatings with good general abrasion resistance, but must be handled
with care to prevent damage to the coatings.
Welding: Manyjoiningtechniquesare now available asalternativesto the more traditional methods. Pre-painted materialscan not be welded bytraditional methods
asthe coatingsdo not conduct electricityand are damaged byheat.
Forming:Roll-formingrather than pressbrakingisrecommended for the formingof sectionsand componentsfrom pre-painted steel sheet, since there islesschance
of damagingthe paint coating.
Packing:Protective strippable filmsare available when required for applicationswhere appearance isof prime importance.
Material Specification:A classification of external and internal environmentsisalso important in determiningthe more suitable material to be utilised. External
environmentscan varybetween coastal and rural and also polluted and unpolluted. Interior environmentsmust also be assessed because a build-up of pollutantsor
fumescould result in premature corrosion on the inside surfaces.
Ordered Thickness: Thisisthe steel pluszinccoating, but not paint coatingi.e. 0.50 or 0.58 mm galvanized thickness.
Grade: The mechanical strength of the steel substrate isexpressed asthe minimum yield strength valuesand ismeasured in megapascals( MPa) .
Low strength steel maybe rated asISQ 230 and asthe yield strength increases, so co the values, with intermediate strength of ISQ 300 and an ISQ 550 havingthe
highest strength.
Span:Thisisthe distance between the roof purlings, asrecommended bythe roll-former, with the valuesvaryingaccordingto each particular profile.
