Literature Review

The presence of technology in classrooms these days can also make an impact
on the students behaviour in class. In a research journal by Angeline M. Lavin, Leon
Korte and Thomas L. Davies, university students, particularly students of business
classes, took park in a research study to investigate the impact of the presence or
absence of technology in the classroom on students efforts and behaviour.
Instructors of the courses were asked whether they made moderate or extensive use
of technology in their courses or not. If they are, then the survey given in the class
asked the students to give their thoughts on how the absence of technology would
impact various components of the student learning. However, if the instructor stated
that he or she did not utilize technology moderately or extensively, the survey given
in the class was then asked the students to give their opinion on how the existence
of technology would make an impact on them. The survey questions were based in
parts on three different student evaluation forms and uses the following five point
scale to collect students opinions: 1 was significantly positive, 2 was positive, 3
was no difference or considerably average, 4 was negative and 5 was significantly
negative. Among others, the students were also asked if they were graduate or
undergraduate students, their program of study or major and their year in school as
well as their gender and grade point average. Participating faculty was asked to
devote class time to allow completion of survey. In total, approximately 500 usable
surveys were completed and returned.
Response of the students in these courses that used technology suggests that
students the presence of technology would have a negative impact on the amount of
time they study for exams and quizzes and class each day, the quantity of the notes
they take, their overall attendance for the class and their appreciation for the
lecturers effort. It also appears that some students feel they would study less if
technology is removed from the course. It somehow seems counterintuitive that the
absence of technology would have a positive impact on the amount of notes
students take, however the quantity of notes taken can be viewed from two different
angles. Students may consider it a positive approach to take fewer notes and
students may perceive that fewer notes are taken when technology is used in the
classroom. The absence of technology, according to the students would also have
positive impact on their attendance and their appreciation for the instructors effort.
The students may perceive that it would be more important to attend classes to hear
the material presented if the notes were not available in technological form outside
of class. Furthermore it appears that students believe that technology makes
teaching easier as the absence of technology would bring benefits on students
appreciation of lecturers effort.
On the contrary, student responses indicate that students expect that the
absence of technology would bring disadvantages on attentiveness in class, amount
of knowledge learned in class, the students desire to take additional classes in the
subject matter and from the particular instructor. These result suggests that students
considered there are specific advantages with the use of technology in classrooms.
