CAUTION
Wear a well-grounded ESD wrist strap whenever you touch equipment or boards. Make sure
that the wrist strap touches your skin. Insert the ESD strap connector into the ESD socket of the
equipment.
For information about how to wear an ESD wrist strap, see Figure 2-1.
Figure 2-1 Wearing an ESD wrist strap

NOTE
Insert the connector of the ESD strap into the equipment port. For details, see the Quick Installation Guide.
When you are following ESD procedures, take the following precautions:
l Check the validity and functionality of the wrist strap. Its resistance value must be between
0.75 mega ohm to 10 mega ohm. If the wrist strap validity period (usually two years) has
expired, or if the resistance value fails to meet requirements, replace it with a wrist strap
that provides the required resistance value.
l Do not touch a board with your clothing. Clothing generates static electricity that is not
protected by the wrist strap.
l Wear an ESD wrist strap and place the board on an ESD pad when you replace boards or
chips. Use ESD tweezers or extraction tools to replace chips. Do not touch chips, circuits,
or pins with your bare hands.
l Keep the boards and other ESD-sensitive parts you are installing in ESD bags. Place the
removed boards and components on an ESD pad or ESD material. Do not use non-antistatic
materials such as white foams, common plastic bags, or paper bags to pack boards, and do
not let these materials touch the boards.
l Wear an ESD wrist strap when operating the ports of boards because they are also ESD-
sensitive. Discharge the static electricity of cables and protective sleeves before you connect
them to the ports.

l Keep packing materials (such as, ESD boxes and bags) available in the equipment room
for packing boards in the future.
ESD complies with IEC Publication 1000, EN 55022, EN 55024, IEC 61000 and GR-1089-
CORE.
2.3 Optical Fibers
This topic describes the precautions for using and cleaning optical fibers.
DANGER
Avoid direct eye exposure to laser beams. Laser beams from an optical port or optical fiber may
cause eye damage.
Protecting a Fiber Connector
When optical ports or fiber connectors are not in use, dustproof caps must be installed on the
ports and connectors.
Removed optical port boards must have air filter caps installed at the optical ports. The boards
must be put into a proper packing box to keep the optical ports clean.
Figure 2-2 shows the recommended dustproof caps.
Figure 2-2 Recommended dustproof caps

Figure 2-3 shows the non-recommended dustproof caps.

Figure 2-3 Non-recommended dustproof caps

NOTE
Soft rubber dustproof caps are not recommended, because they absorb dust and other waste material.
Connecting an Optical Fiber
WARNING
Because of the extremely high optical power of lasers, when a loopback test is performed on an
optical port using a pigtail, the optical attenuation must be increased to avoid damage to the
equipment. For boards on which an attenuator can be added, the attenuator should be added to
the receive optical port.
When connecting an optical fiber, insert the optical fiber gently into the optical port. For details
on how to use fiber connectors, refer to the Supporting Tasks.
DANGER
Before inserting or removing a fiber on the Raman amplifying board CRPC, shut down the pump
laser to avoid damage to human body due to the extremely high optical power of the laser.
The CRPC imposes high requirements on the fiber splice loss of the line nearby, as shown in
Table 2-2.

NOTE
The line interface on the CRPC connects to the optical port on the ODF through fiber connectors. Other
connection points adopt the fiber splicing form.
For details on how to use fiber connectors, refer to the Supporting Tasks.
Cleaning an Optical Fiber
To avoid damaging optical equipment, always use the correct cleaning tools and materials to
clean fiber connectors and optical ports.
The following is a list of common cleaning tools and materials:
l Special cleaning solvent. (Isoamylol is preferred, although propyl alcohol can be used.)
WARNING
Alcohol is not recommended and formaldehyde is forbidden.
l Lint-free wipes
l Lint-free swabs
l Optical-grade compressed air duster
l Optical-grade cleaning roll
l Inspection microscope
CAUTION
Before using an inspection microscope to inspect a fiber connector, use an optical power
meter to confirm that the laser is powered off.
For details on how to clean an optical fiber, refer to the Supporting Tasks.
2.4 Network Management System
This topic describes the precautions for using the U2000.
l Set the server time before installing the U2000. Do not change the server time when the
U2000 is running.
If there is a need to change the server time, exit the U2000 server and shut down the
database. Then restart the U2000 server after the change.

7
If there is a need to change the client time, exit the U2000 client and restart the
U2000 client after the change.
l Do not change the name or IP address of the computer on which the U2000 server is installed
unless absolutely necessary.
l When logging in to the U2000 server from a UNIX platform, use "U2000" as the user name.
When logging in to the U2000 server from a Windows platform, use the user name created
when the U2000 was installed (do not change this user name).
l After configuring an NE and it is running normally, manually synchronize the NE data with
the U2000 to ensure that the data on the U2000 and NE is consistent.
l Back up the U2000 database regularly to minimize any data loss caused by system
exceptions.
l Before setting NE parameters, query the latest data on the NE.
l When requesting most operations that could degrade or adversely affect the running of the
system, the U2000 asks for confirmation before processing the request.
l A U2000 license file is an authorized file and must be kept confidential. Do not change or
alter the license file in any way. Any change or alteration will invalidate the license.

ly
l On the WDM network, the IPA function
must be configured for the NE that uses a
high-power OA (with a 21.3 dBm maximum
output optical power or higher).
l IPA pairs must be configured at both the
transmit and receive sites.
NOTE
For details on how to query the IPA, see
"Dependencies and Limitations" and "Parameters:
Raman IPA Management".Dependencies and

Checking
the ALC
function
Month
ly
1. Check whether ECC routes are available
between ALC nodes and ensure that all ALC
nodes are listed in the ECC routing table.
2. Update the ALC status on the U2000 and
ensure that no error is reported.
NOTE
For details on how to query the ALC, see
"Parameters: ALC Management". For a node that
adds or drops a wavelength, you should configure the
optical amplifier unit in the receive direction as the
detection node and the optical amplifier unit in the
transmit direction as the reference unit.

Checking
the WMU
function
Month
ly
1. Verify that physical fiber connections and
logical fiber connections are consistent.
2. Check whether the configuration of the WMU
pair is consistent with that of physical fiber
connections. Ensure that the IN1/IN2 port on the
WMU board is connected to the MON port of
the corresponding OA board. Otherwise,
wavelength shift will occur on all OTU boards.
3. Check whether a WAVELEN_OVER alarm
indicating wavelength shift is reported. If yes,
ensure the optical fiber is properly connected.
