5 dead, 5 injured in car accidents around city

A spate of car wrecks - one involving a plunge from a highway overpass - left five people dead and at
least five others injured early this morning, cops said.
Passengers Naquana Kilpatrick, 25 and Gilberto Howard, 17, were killed at about 12:40 a.m. when the
1995 Honda Accord they were in struck an elevated train post on Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn, cops said.
The driver, who was critically injured and another passenger, who was in stable condition, were taken to
King's County Hospital.


Pieces of the mangled car - tire fragments, shattered glass and portions of the roof - littered at least two
blocks of the largely industrial area.
About 10 minutes later, a 35-year-old man smashed his silver, 2008 BMW into an unoccupied truck on
Ave. D in Carnarsie, killing himself and his passenger, cops said.
Warren Davies, 35 of Brooklyn, was pronounced dead on the scene just outside the Pepsi Cola factory,
cops said. His passenger, Roger Gill, 35, of Springfield Gardens, died at Brookdale Hospital, cops said.
Police said high speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.
Another driver died after his vehicle hit a guardrail at exit 22A on the Long Island Expressway in Queens
and plunged off the exit ramp at about 3:30 a.m. The vehicle landed below in Flushing Meadows Park
and burst into flames.
About 30 minutes later, four people were hospitalized after a police patrol car and a sedan collided on 6th
Ave. in the West Village.
Witnesses said they didn't hear a siren or see flashing lights before the 6th Precinct squad car crossed
6th Ave. westbound on 11th St.
Cops said the patrol car was heading to a call for an "officer assist."
"The police were going fast. They just crashed," said Elvis Dobro, 23, a bartender at French Roast, a
restaurant across the street from the accident site.
The sedan's metal frame was severely bent when it came to rest against Ray's Famous Pizza, its airbags
dangling.
The squad car's front bumper and trunk showed signs of damage as it sat on the sidewalk beside the
sedan.
"Nobody was moving from the cars," Dobro said of the aftermath.
Four people were taken to St. Vincent's Hospital.
A spokesman with the NYPD Department of Public Information said all of the injuries were minor and that
no further information was immediately available.

MANILA, Philippines - The De La Salle Lady Spikers completed a historic sweep of the UAAP Season
74 women's volleyball tournament, defeating rivals Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles in five hard-
fought sets Sunday afternoon before a full house at The Arena in San Juan.
La Salle bucked a slow start and an up-and-down game to win their 14th straight assignment
this season and their 25th straight game dating back to January 2011 with scores of 18-25, 25-14,
21-25, 25-19 and 15-7.
The Lady Spikers booked an outright berth in the Finals along with a thrice-to-beat advantage.
They will need to win only once in the finals to win their second straight volleyball championship.
With La Salle's sweep, the other Final Four teams will feature in a step-ladder format to determine
who will face the Lady Spikers in the finals.
Ateneo got off to a strong start thanks to excellent serves by Dzi Gervacio and took the first set 25-
18. It was the first set that La Salle had dropped in the second round of the elimination.
The Lady Spikers took the second set easily to tie the game up, but were pushed to the brink after
Ateneo won the third set. La Salle had several reception errors, including a costly one from team
captain Cha Cruz that gave the Lady Eagles the set point.
But the Lady Spikers took control back in the fourth set and outclassed the Lady Eagles in the final
set to complete the sweep of the elimination rounds -- a feat they also achieved in 2004, when they
won the volleyball title outright.
Abigail Marano starred with 20 points on 19 attacks and one block, but it was DLSU's impressive
net defense and coverage that stymied Ateneo's vaunted offense. Cruz also finished with 19 points.
Sophomore setter Mikaela Esperanza outplayed Ateneo's Jem Ferrer, dishing out 71 excellent sets
to Ferrer's 62.
"Sinabi ko sa kanya (Esperanza) na magtiwala lamang sa sarili n'ya at sa mga spikers," said La Salle
coach Ramil de Jesus. "Maganda ang mga bigay niya sa mga attacker kaya tumaas ang kanyang
kumpiyansa."

Ateneo's rookie star Alyssa Valdez and team captain Fille Cainglet both finished with 16 points.
None of the Ateneo attackers were effective in the fifth set, however, while La Salle's Marano and
rookie Mika Reyes took turns in scoring.
The Lady Eagles ended up with an 11-3 record, which is still the best finish in school history. They
will have a twice-to-beat advantage in the step-ladder semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws will face off the Adamson University Lady
Falcons in a playoff for the fourth seed on Monday at The Arena. The winner will face off against the
third-seeded University of Santo Tomas.
The winner of that match-up will go on to face the Lady Eagles, who have yet to win a volleyball
championship since joining the league in 1978.

ATENEO LADY EAGLES DEFEATED DE LA SALLE LADY SPIKERS IN A THRILLING FOUR SETS,
CLAIMING GAME 1 OF THE UAAP SEASON 74 VOLLEYBALL FINALS.
The Ateneo win ended the 25-game winning streak of La Salle dating back to January 8, 2011 and
their perfect slate of 14-0 record in the elimination round of the tournament. It was also the Lady
Eagles first win over Lady Spikers in 10 head to head match-ups.
The score in four sets: 23-25, 28-26, 25-23 and 25-17 for Ateneo.
One of the game changer in the match was the bold move of Coach Roger Gorayeb of Ateneo to field 6-
foot-2 freshman Mary Mae Tajima in the last part of Set 2 to stop middle attacks of La Salle. Her
defensive presence led to Ateneo winning the thrilling set, 28-26.
Now its down to best-of-three, with both squads needing two victories to claim
the volleyball championship. DLSU Lady Spikers was awarded thrice to beat advantage at the start of the

MANILA, Philippines - The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers scored their 1st win of UAAP Season 74
with a 79-67 victory over the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons.
The Green Archers broke the game wide open thanks to a sizzling 3rd quarter that saw them outscore UP 23-10.
The Maroons' offense went ice cold in the 3rd quarter, as they managed only 3 field goals in the period and shot an
anemic 21% from the floor. La Salle also out-rebounded them, 16-8.
The game was close in the 1st half, with Mike Silungan leading the charge for UP. The Maroons were within striking
distance at the half, 36-29.
But La Salle started the 3rd quarter with a 12-0 run, and the Maroons were unable to keep up. The 3rd quarter ended
with La Salle up by 20, 59-39.
UP tried to stage a comeback in the 4th quarter, with Angelo Montecastro and Jet Manuel combining on a 6-0 run to
start the period.
But Luigi Dela Paz scored 8 straight points for DLSU to silence UP's run.
UP was able to bring the deficit down to 10 points late in the final period, 77-67, thanks to a 3-pointer from Manuel.
But the Maroons ran out of time and Jarelan Tampus canned 2 free throws to end the scoring at 79-67.
The Maroons did not help themselves as they missed 7 of 20 free throws.
Dela Paz led the Archers with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
Silungan finished with 16 points for the Maroons.
Vice President Jejomar Binay, a UP alumnus, attended the game.
