My Social Justice Action

Our Global Studies assignment was to participate in a social justice action. We were
formed into groups of 3 and this is my report on my participation throughout this
assignment. With this opportunity, a social justice issue that my group members as well as
myself decided to go along with was 'child poverty' in ew !ealand. "he reason why we
chose to base our action of child poverty was because we wanted change. We wanted
children to be able to have access to basic needs in life. #hild poverty is an issue that we
can stop by ta$ing action. %overty is insufficient income for health care, nutritious food,
ade&uate housing, clothing and education. 'veryone, everywhere has the right to live with
dignity. (eaning that no)one is to be denied their rights to ade&uate housing, food, water
and to education and health care.
*y choosing 'child poverty' as our main focus for this assignment, the organi+ation that we,
as a group pic$ed to base our issue on and an organi+ation that helped our issue was
#hild %overty ,ction Group. #hild %overty ,ction Group are an independent charity who
aim to eliminate child poverty in ew !ealand. (y group members and myself planned out
our action. We e)mailed #%,G, informing them why we wanted to choose their
organi+ation to base our current assignment on and what our ideas were, to help raise
awareness of their organi+ation.
We decided that to help raise awareness of both our issue and organi+ation, we will create
a website. "he website we had created informs readers of what #hild %overty ,ction
Group's core objectives are, ways they can help stop this issue and how they can help
raise awareness. Once we finished the website, it was placed onto our school updates tab
where students as well as teachers will be able to see our message and lin$. ,lso, it was
sent out directly to my classmates and teachers of my whanau. ,nother action we too$
was e)mailing the %rime (inister of ew !ealand, -ohn .ey. We decided to ta$e on this
action because it was recommended on #%,G official website. One of the many ways to
help raise awareness of 'child poverty' was to e)mail -ohn .ey. *y e)mailing the %rime
(inister, we were as$ed to inform him of why we wanted a greater priority given to children
in poverty.
(y personal involvement during this social action was mainly that / created the website. /
decided to create the website as / was the most familiar with how to use the website
software we pic$ed. / thin$ creating the website was an easy tas$ for myself as / was
obvious with what was needed to be added and how it was to be presented. / received
feedbac$ from my group members during creating the website occasionally to ma$e sure
that the group were all satisfied with how it was0loo$ed. / find that the website overall was
successful and that / played a big part during this assignment as the website was the main
action we decided on.
When deciding on what social action we wanted to pic$, my group members, Shiloah and
*rittney as well as myself all decided to create a website and e)mail the %rime (inister.
We found that these actions were simple yet effective as well as suitable for all three of us.
#hild %overty ,ction Group also approved of our ideas. "hey were happy that we pic$ed
child poverty and their organi+ation as the focus for our assignment.
Overall, to conclude my social action, what we had initially planned to do turned out to be a
success. 'verything we wanted to do, we managed to fulfill. ,ll evidence referring to my
