The diagram above is a scale diagram of a floor plan for a castle. The castle is made up of a pentagonal-
walled compound with a tower at each corner. Each tower is a right cylinder or prism (with a regular
polygonal base). The rectangular prism is topped with a pyramidal roof, the cylindrical tower is topped
with a hemispherical dome, and the other towers are flat roofed. The great hall in the center of the walled
space is a right cylinder topped with a cone. Your groups task is to design your own castle that you will
build. The requirements that you must meet are listed below. You may work in groups of up to 3
students.

Your castle must include:
at least 1 of each of the following: rectangular prism, cylinder, cone, hexagonal pyramid/prism,
triangular prism/pyramid
At least 2 towers, a main structure, and surrounding land (trees, grasslands, farms, etc.)
Your design must fit on a 18x24 poster board
You may also want to include aspects such as a moat, a drawbridge, etc.

Groups of up to 3 students will turn in:
Decorated hand-made castle that meets the requirements above
Diagrams/Sketches of each solid, including dimensions.
Calculations for the surface area and volume of each solid included in the castle.


SUGGESTIONS
-DO NOT wait until the last minute! Part of your grade will depend on the creativity and detail put into
your castles!
-Come see me EARLY if you have any questions!
-Make good use of time given during class and/or tutorial to work on this project!
-BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN WITH THIS!!
