Podcast Written Component

The Podcast lesson fulfills the International Reading Association in a variety of ways. For
starters, it complies with Standard 1.2 Candidates understand the historically shared
knowledge of the profession and changes over time in the perceptions of reading and writing
development, processes, and component. This compliance comes with acknowledgement of
the shift of reading and writing to a digital mediumin this case, the podcast. It also complies
with IRA Standards 2.2 Candidates use appropriate and varied instructional approaches,
including those that develop word recognition, language comprehension, strategic knowledge
and reading-writing connections. The varied instructional approach in this lesson is the use of
technology, a Wiki page as well as creating the Podcast on Audacity. The lesson also hits on IRA
Standard 2.3 Candidates use a wide range of texts from traditional print, digital and online
resources. The use of online readings as well as youtube videos gives a wide array of text
opportunities. Furthermore, the Podcast lesson fulfills IRA standard 5.1 Candidates design the
physical environment to optimize students use of traditional print, digital, and online resources
in reading and writing instruction. This optimization of the physical environment comes with
the use of online digital reading, as well as publishing their writing in a digital formatthe
Podcast.
The Podcast lesson also fulfills two of the International Society for Technology and
Education Standards. Standards 1 calls for Creativity and Innovation by using existing
knowledge to generate new ideas and create original works. In this lesson, students are
generating new ideas about cyberbullying as well as using technology to create an original work
(the podcast). ISTE Standard 2 stresses communication and collaboration. This lesson enables
students to communicate and collaborateboth by creating the Podcasts and also by sharing
their creation with the class.
My lesson on Podcasts adheres to several of the Kentucky Teacher Standards. It hits on
KTS 6.1 by using technology to design and plan a lessonthe crux of the lesson is based
around creating the Podcast. The lesson also uses technology to implement instruction that
facilitates student learning, thus fulfilling the criteria for KTS 6.2. It also falls under the domain
of KTS 6.3, integrates student use of available technology into instruction. In this case,
students are using the web, a Wiki as well as the software to create a Podcast. The assessment
of the lesson is based on the implementation of technology, hence adhering to Standard 6.4.
Finally, because the lesson is designed to teach students about cyberbullying, they are also
learning about the safe and ethical use of technology, which is KTS 6.5.
