CAREER REPRESENTATIVE HANDBOOK

MBA CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 1
Mission Statement and Responsibilities

Welcome and congratulations on your new role! We are thrilled to begin our partnership with
you. We rely heavily on our Career Representatives for many things; you are pivotal not only in
the student to student dissemination of career information, but in keeping our office abreast of
student needs and concerns. This handbook provides a comprehensive description of
responsibilities and opportunities that you will encounter as a Career Rep and will serve as a
helpful resource throughout the next two years.

MBA Career & Professional Development Mission Statement
To enable each student in the realization of a unique career vision.

Career Representative Mission Statement
To serve as an extension of MBA Career & Professional Development in an effort to enable
students in the realization of their unique career visions.

Career Representative Responsibilities
Liaise: You will be the communication link between CPD and your section, providing
timely information, instructions and understanding of processes they support (recruiting,
career coaching, programs, resume review). You will meet with CPD approximately once a
month for one hour. Additionally, you will frequently distribute emails to the section and
make announcements regarding important deadlines and events.

Our office collects job search data from RCs throughout the year to understand where the
class stands. As Career Rep, we look to you as key to communicating expectations of
completing the collection poll, the process of completion and the reasons CPD collects the
data.

Know: Be an expert on career-related topics (Career Hub, recruiting processes, programs,
resources, company outreach, etc.) for the section. Workflow will be busiest in November
and then January/February as there are numerous recruiting-related processes and deadlines
during these months.

Act: Create, organize and participate in section career activities that may include group
lunches, industry/function presentations, and other events. Facilitate the Open Your
Rolodex session, a program that facilitates networking for RCs still searching. Your support
becomes especially important in the spring as many of your section mates will struggle to stay
focused and positive about the job search.

MISSION STATEMENT AND RESPONSIBILITIES (CONT.)

Time Commitment
The overall time commitment of a Career Rep varies depending on the time of year, but is very
manageable overall.

During non-peak times, Career Reps will spend approximately 1-2 hours per week
communicating with section-mates primarily by email, regarding various recruiting processes,
programs and events.
At the height of the Recruiting Season (November through February), Career Reps will be
the first point of contact for section-mates with questions about processes. At peak times
like these, Career Reps will likely spend 3-5 hours per week responding to questions and
concerns.
In the spring, Career Reps will spend much of the time facilitating career related programs
for their sections. It is up to you how much time you choose to spend planning and
executing these activities. We will communicate during our meetings best practices for such
programs.

The Transition from RC to EC Career Rep
Support your section by answering questions related to job search and recruiting processes.
Keep us informed of student needs and activity (particularly because students are no longer
in sections).
Help promote CPD programs, initiatives, resources and efforts.
Occasionally share insights with incoming RC Career Reps.
Attend monthly meetings with CPD.

GETTING STARTED

There are a number of tools, resources and programs with which you should familiarize yourself
upon beginning your new role. Most of them can be found on Career Hub, so we encourage
you to start there. Navigate through the site, so that you have a good understanding of what is
included under each Job Search Step. You will be expected to be the section expert on how to
use the site and what content it contains there (see Career Hub below.)

Career Hub
This is your one-stop shop for career-related resources.

Job Search Steps - Throughout the year, we will deliver programs and share resources
pertaining to each step. Please familiarize yourself with the content within each step.

Career Actions This is where you view job postings, sign up for coaching, sign up for
programs/practice interviews, and access resume books, Company Insights, and historical
job postings.
