IIT Bombay, set up by an Act of Parliament, was established in 1958, at Powai, a
northern suburb of Mumbai. Today the Institute is recognized as one of the centers of
academic excellence in the country. Over the years, there has been dynamic progress
at IIT Bombay in all academic and research activities, and a parallel improvement in
facilities and infrastructure, to keep it on par with the best institutions in the world.
Institutes in positions of excellence grow with time. The ideas and ideals on which such
institutes are built evolve and change with national aspirations, national perspectives,
and trends world - wide. IIT Bombay, too, is one such institution. www.iitb.ac.in

MoDE - Monitoring of Distribution
Enterprises
Distribution utilities today face several challenges
that of managing distribution losses, costs,
customer expectations and
changing legal, policy & regulatory frameworks
Utility business processes are executed from geographically distant
locations
Processes are either fully/partly automated and sometimes even manual
as a result it becomes a challenge for a utility to adopt proactive approach
and to take quick and informed decisions which are essential for success
PowerAnser Labs
18
MoDE - Monitoring of Distribution
Enterprises
Availability of correct and concise data, in a usable form, is the
key
MoDE has a central data repository that integrates and collects
data from various business processes and presents it in an
intuitive and coherent view
MoDE enables users to instantly and graphically track and monitor
various key parameters
Network Assets, Equipment Failures, Network Performance
(including regulatory indices), Billing & Collection, Energy Audit, Load
Pattern, Consumer trends, Load Studies, Quality Assessment, etc.
Uses the central data store and webDNA to offer configurable,
web based, rich GUI
User can access the data from anywhere and anytime in a highly
secure manner
UI can be customized such that different views involving data from
different business processes can be created to understand the
relationships between them

Current Basket of Offerings
PowerAnser Labs
21
Current Offerings from PAL
Decision support tools
Infrastructure planning tools
Infrastructure cost management tools
Finance tools related to bidding, risk management etc.
PowerAnser Labs
22
Decision Support Tools
General Overview
Tools:
Load Flow Analysis (LFA)
Short Term Load Forecasting (STLF)
Security Constrained Optimal Power Flow (SCOPF)
Target Customers:
Transmission Companies
Distribution Companies
ISO (or TSO)
Traders
Key Thoughts behind Developing these Tools
Critical computational tools required for scheduling loads and generations in an electricity
market
Should do maximization of social welfare (= consumer benefit - generation cost)
Ascertain security of the transmission system under contingencies
ANN, time series, or expert system based approach is used for load forecasting
PowerAnser Labs
23
Load Flow Analysis
Given all source and sink MW & MVAR injections in the system,
calculate the
real & reactive power flows in the transmission system along with
system losses, &
voltage profile
Involves solution of non-linear system of equations
Problem size can be of the order of 10,000 nodes
Salient features:
State of the art sparse matrix computation
framework
Object oriented modeling
Fast decoupled Load Flow methodology
In collaboration with TCE, all India load flow
has been modeled with about 5,000 nodes for
the first time in India
What others do/how else is it done?
Speed of computation - comparable
Methodology - comparable
Modeling features - comparable
PowerAnser Labs
24
Short Term Load Forecasting
Primary purpose is to accurately forecast the next days city load
(MW) with 15 min resolution
A utility load is forecasted by summing the city / region loads
Required to accurately schedule generation, calculate UI, &
associated charges
Status:
An expert system using similar day approach
in MATLAB has been implemented
A C++ implementation underway
Short course (10 hrs) on statistical methods
(by Mathematics Dept., IITB) for forecasting
conducted
What others do/how else is it done?
Forecasting using SAS is being attempted by
another local utility - expensive - we plan to
provide a cost effective and accurate
forecaster
In long run we plan to develop combined
forecasts by using both statistical forecasting
engines (e.g., ARMA, ARIMA) & expert
systems approach
PowerAnser Labs
25
SCOPF
Based upon the generator and load bids, optimally schedule generation
and loads, modeling load elasticity:
Lagrangian Multipliers associated with the nodal injections furnish the LMPs
A tool which governs market operations for many markets like PJM, etc
Considers what if situations of contingencies
Salient features:
Plan to develop OPF using SLP approach as it
is robust & comparatively simple to implement.
Dash optimization tool box already procured
Congestion management features will be built
in it - would be useful in open access
environment
What others do/how else is it done?
A very specialized and sophisticated
application - only few organizations have a
capability to deliver it
Has evolved significantly since deregulation -
many companies must be going through an
up-gradation phase

Infrastructure Planning Tools
General Overview
Tools:
Transmission System Expansion Planning
Short term, Long term
Distribution System Planning
Reconfiguration, Greenfield Planning
Long Term Load Forecasting
Target Customers:
Transmission Companies
Distribution Companies
Key Thoughts behind Developing these Tools
Open access was approved by Indian Parliament in 2003
Existing system is plagued with inadequate network infrastructure
Large investments demand optimization tools for planning
Detailed level modeling to simulate planned system
refined algorithms to reach optimal plan
ability to run more what - ifs
speed of execution
PowerAnser Labs
27
Transmission System Expansion
Planning
Transmission System Infrastructure development is a focus area all over
the world
This tool finds out the optimal expansion plan over multiple time horizons
by using OR tools and rule based systems
Generation expansion plans, load forecasts, & system reliability
specifications form the input to this tool
Salient Features:
Existing load flow program has been upgraded to handle STEP requirements.- uses a rule based
approach
Can plan for new lines on existing right of ways
Meets CEAs guidelines for planning
Optimal Medium & Long Term TEP tool development planned
Similar approach used by other state of the art packages.
STEP program has been successfully used for planning additional TEP requirements for 2011-12 on
an all India Network (220kV and above) in collaboration with TCE
PowerAnser Labs
28
Infrastructure Cost Management
Tools
General Overview
Tools for fair allocation of:
Transmission System Fixed Costs
Loss Allocation
Fixed Cost of Generators Allocation
Remarks:
Tools will be based on power flow tracing
Transmission companies will require these tools
Use of these tools has to be recommended by Regulators
Key Thoughts behind Developing these Tools
Embedded cost of transmission system as well as MW loss has to be shared by participants
(loads and generators)
Present approach (Postage Stamp - bill based on connected load as a percentage of total load
irrespective of distance) is naive and does not account for actual usage
Power Flow Tracing Based solution (multi-commodity flow decomposition tool from OR) will be
used
This aspect is currently bothering the Regulators (CERC, MERC, etc.) across the country
PowerAnser Labs
29
Power Flow Tracing
Given the power flow solution, calculate the usage of the network by
each commodity, i.e. loads & generators
Use it for computing
Transmission system usage costs of generators and loads
Loss allocation for generator and load entities
Challenge lies in development of a fair allocation scheme
Min - max fairness
Modified postage stamp allocation scheme
Status:
Requires state of the art large and sparse LP
package (Dash Optimization procured for the
purpose)
Variable reduction technique developed
Prototyping in MATLAB completed
R&D potential - have come up with a tracing
compliant fixed cost allocation strategy for
Gencos
What others do/how else is it done?
Optimal power flow tracing is our USP
pioneered by research at IIT Bombay
Other tracing applications use fixed allocation
scheme
This application has not trickled into
commercial programs yet
