There are numerous designs of displays for automotives (such as trucks, lorries, cars,

etc). Pick any three examples (from any of the automotives) and discuss if they meet all
of the display design principles.
It can be any display in automotives (speedometer display, gps navigation display, car
media control display and etc)
Example ! "igital Instrument Panel of #udi #$
The digital instrument panel of Audi A8 incorporates the speedometer, assistance system and
head-up display (HUD). This combination of multiple displays meets the proximity
compatibility principle by decreasing the information access cost.n addition, information is
presented on a high-resolution !-inch colour display in the instrument panel to make
displays legible. The speedometer of the Audi A8 uses an analogue display "hich meets the
principle of top%do&n processing, pictorial realism and moving part. A8 meets the
principle of predictive aiding by pro#iding assistance systems such asAdapti#e cruise
control, Audi acti#e lane assist,$ar% assist "ith display of surroundings and &ight #ision
assistant. The details on the assistance systems are a#ailable in the company's "ebsite. The
#arious assistance systems of Audi A8 ha#e different features( this meets the principle of
discriminability. The night #ision assistant assists the dri#er "hen dri#ing at night by
displaying a thermal image of the surroundings. f the system detects a potential ris%, the
mar%ing changes to red, a "arning triangle appears and a "arning tone is emitted. This
feature fulfils the principle of multiple resources by relaying "arnings #isually and
auditory. )urthermore, the head-up display (HUD) incorporated into the car satisfies the
principle of minimi'ing information access cost. The HUD enables the dri#er to %eep
loo%ing for"ard instead of shifting their #ie" from the road to the speedometer.

Example )! *peedometer "isplay of +issan ,T%- -./
The design of meter cluster display for &issan *T+ is simply fits almost all important
criterions for a dri#er to concentrate on dri#e for safe ,ourney. The speedometer gi#es
information on %m-h "hich suitable for Asian mar%et and a#ailable in miles per hours for
U. - /uro mar%ets. The first criterion is to ma%e the display legible-audible "here the clear
enough for standard dri#er understand all the information and labelled te0t on the gauge
meter cluster. The second is to a#oid absolute ,udgment limits. 1ased on the obser#ation, the
&issan *T+ +23 highlighted the tachometer (+$4 meter) "hereas the re# limit at !555rpm
to 8555 rpm in red colour to emphasi6e the re#olution limits for the car. &e0t, the top-do"n
processing can be presented at the fuel gauges "hen the user e0perienced and %no" the fuel
gauge indicate / for empty and ) for )ull. +edundancy gain a #ery good e0ample at the
digital display %m-l deli#er message ho" much mileage gas "ere used to calculate the
efficiency of the car according to the characteristic of the dri#ing style. 7n the right side most
meter "ith blue colour light indicate "hich *ear position to a#oid any discriminable
elements "here confuse the dri#er "hich gear the user has shifted. n the cluster meter, on
the right side sho" "ater temperature "here principle of pictorial realism is applied, "here
the cold temperature is at the bottom and the hot temperature at the top because top to bottom
is more easily understood compare "ith the #ice-#ersa. The speedometer is located at the
most left side to include an element in principle of the mo#ing parts. As the speedometer
increase, the car starts mo#ing the car according to the desired speed. All the important
symbol to indicates important information are sho" at the bottom right side of the meter
cluster, all the information are placed at sufficient area to inform the car if there is any faulty
error code should be a"are. Also this can be included in pro0imity compatibility principle. t
is not too close each other but enough to get attention from the dri#er.

Example )! 0olvo 1oncept Estate
n-car interface is such an important part of ne" car design. The interface adds #alue to the
car "hilst ma%ing it user-friendly to the dri#er or passenger to na#igate around the gadget
inside their dream car. As one of the leading car manufacturer, 8ol#o 9ar *roup had
introduced the ne" design of in car interface "hich they claim to simplify and enhance the
"ay dri#er operates their cars.
:no"n as the 8ol#o 9oncept /state - in car control system is designed around large tablet
-li%e touch screen. As ;uoted by Thomas ngenlath (<5=>), the ne" interface "as designed to
create a smooth, logical and safe interaction bet"een the dri#er and the car. This goes beyond
,ust putting a large tablet in the centre of the dashboard. 8ol#o had created a digital
en#ironment that is fully integrated in the car.
The design uses four tiles of logical stac%s "hich include the na#igation, media, telephone
and the digital climate control. The design completes all the ma,or point of important need for
dri#er "hile stac%ing it ergonomically. nformation, na#igation and media are high up and
easy to %eep an eye on "hile the telephone control and the digital climate control are do"n
belo" for comfortable reach and touch. n addition, the screen control "as made so logical
that it can be memori6ed by the muscle memory #ery ;uic%ly. Another positi#e note to this is
the interface also includes the thumb reach control on the steering "heel and e0tensi#e #oice
control possibilities.
The ne" user interface is designed so that the tiles on the touch screen e0pand on interaction.
?hen one of the tiles e0pands to display re;uired information, the others are compressed,
still #isible and instantly accessible. 9reating this crystal clear, yet calm, en#ironment is a
core part of 8ol#o digital craftsmanship. t is fine for an ordinary tablet to fight for dri#er's
full attention but a touch screen in a car is #ery different. nformation must be clear and user-
friendly, "ithout turning up the #isual #olume so much that you ris% losing focus on the road.
This also ma%es it easier to ma%e really urgent information, such as a "arning, much more
distincti#e.
