using Regression Analysis

Problem/ Situation:
Plot a scatter diagram of the following data then use regression analysis to predict the
final grade of a PT-1A student in IT if his final grade in English is:
a. 1.0
b. 3.2

Steps in Hypothesis Testing:
a.) Before applying regression analysis, use the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation
Coefficient method to find out if the acquired data are correlated.

1. H
o
: There is no significant correlation between the PT - 1A students (2
nd
semester)
English Grade and IT Grade.
H
a
: There is a significant correlation between the PT 1A students (2
nd
semester)
English Grade and IT Grade.

2. Level of significance = 5%
3. Pearson r is used to test the hypothesis
4. Computation

= 30 (152.19) (73.4)(61.7)

= 4565.7 4528.78

= 36.92
86.62
r = 0.43

r verbal interpretation
0.00 no correlation
0.01 - + 0.20 slight correlation
+ 0.21 - + 0.40 low correlation
+ 0.41 - + 0.70 moderate correlation
+ 0.71 - + 0.80 high correlation
+ 0.81 - + 0.99 very high correlation
1.00 Perfect correlation

5. df = N- 2 = 30 2 = 28
6. Tabular Value = 0.361 (from Appendix C)
7. Reject the null hypothesis because the computed value is greater than the tabular
value.
8. There is a significant linear relationship between the English Grade and IT Grade.
The verbal interpretation shows that there is a moderate correlation between the two
variables.

b.) Once it is proven that the variables are correlated, regression analysis can now be used to
predict the IT grade by using this formula

y = a + bx

where y = the criterion measure
x = the predictor
a = the ordinate or the point where the regression line
crosses the y axis
b = the beta weight of the slope of the line

to get the regression equation, the values of a and b are computed:

a = (y)( x
2
) (x) (xy)
n (x
2
) (x)
2

b = n xy - x y
n (x
2
) (x)
2

where n = number of data pairs

x = 73.4
y = 61.7
xy = 152.19
x
2
= 182.68
y
2
= 129.59
(x)
2
= 5387.56
(y)
2
= 3806.89

a = (y)( x
2
) (x) (xy)
n (x
2
) (x)
2
= (61.7)(182.68) (73.4)(152.19)
30 (182.68) (5387.56)
= 11 271.356 11 170.746
5480.4 5387.56
= 100.61
92.84
a = 1.084

b = n xy - x y
n (x
2
) (x)
2

= 30 (152.19) (73.4)(61.7)
30 (182.68) 5387.56
= 4 565.7 4528.78
5 480.4 5387.56
= 36.92
92.84
b = 0.398

A.) Use regression analysis to predict the grade of a student in IT if his grade in English is
1.0.
y = a + bx
= 1.08 + (0.398)(1.0)
y = 1.482

Hence, the students possible IT Final Grade is 1.48 given a final English Grade of 1.0

B.) Use regression analysis to predict the grade of a student in IT if his grade in English is
3.2
y = a + bx
= 1.08 + (0.398)(3.2)
Y = 2.358

Hence, a students IT Final Grade is 2.36 if given a Final English Grade of 3.2
