Minimum compressive strength of 16,000 psi in an exclusive
modern furnace versus typical domestic tempering of approxi-
mately 11,500 psi. This gives the glass added strength so that

the hole locations where maximum stress occurs.

5. Rollerwave Distortion Control
Rollerwave distortion (the visual waviness inherent in tempered
glass) is reduced to an average of 0.0007 peak to valley in lieu
of the published norm of 0.05. This exclusive feature virtually

Fail Safe Redundancy of Fins
The consultant demanded an unprecedented FAIL-SAFE,
REDUNDANCY TEST that had never been done before. Under
design load (40 psf), we remotely broke a glass fin to prove that
the system would stay in place with a broken structural element
on the wall! In addition, we tested for dynamic water, air, and
seismic loading.
Bomb-Blast Testing
Pilkington leads the way with recent testing allowing Pilkington
to design systems to the level 1 standard of the GSA when
tested to both GSA level C and D standards.
Hurricane Testing
With the development of the Planar
TM
| SentryGlas

Plus System,
and with the growth of hurricane impact codes, Pilkington will
be moving forward in late 2007 with full scale testing for the
Pilkington Planar Hurricane Impact System. Pilkington and

Steel backup structures can be anything from simple pipe
columns to complicated, expressive truss systems. The steel can
either by supplied by us or can be supplied by others working
in close cooperation with W&W and Pilkington.

Glass Mullions
Glass mullions form the structural system. These systems are
always suspended from above with the face glass fastened to the
fins with Pilkington Hardware. The structure above carries the
combined weight of the faade and fins. PilkingtonPlanar
TM
fin systems have been tested to loads of 270 psf (320 mph)
for 15 minutes as well as for use in areas of high seismic
activity.

in horizontal applications. Years of testing for snow, seismic,
wind, water and impact have proven the use of structural glass
in these applications. Horizontal glazing can be virtually flat
with a minimum of 3 degrees of slope to eliminate ponding in
the middle of individual glass panels.

Tension Structures
Pilkington leads the way in the development of sole source
cable tension and structural glass systems. Full design assist
2D and 3D analysis is available. These systems require very
early design assist cooperation with the building engineer to
ensure that proper perimeter steel is designed early in the
project. Various types of standard designs exist and custom
designs are available.

In addition to cable truss structures, Pilkington and W&W have
developed and tested the Planar Net System. Planar Net uses
the same principles used by the PilkingtonPlanar

System by
attaching Planar countersunk panels to pre-tensioned cables
which are then attached to a coordinated boundary structure.
Combined with Planar Integral (page 8), cable nets can be
supplied without any exterior fittings or patches!

IntraFix
For applications in which the design team wants an insulating
wall without any external bolts, caps, or washers, the Planar
IntraFix bolt will finish, in late 2007, a punishing set of dura-
bility trials and be launched. This fixing mechanism captures
the tempered or laminated inner leaf of an insulated unit with a
stainless steel disk system which does not penetrate the outer
glass. Planar IntraFix allows high performance coated glasses
to be used for the external lite of the IG unit. IntraFix will
carry the PilkingtonPlanar
TM
12 year warranty!

Integral
A fully tested and patented method of fixing laminated glass
panels to a backup structure without any exterior bolts, caps or
washers! All fittings are concealed within the laminated glass.
This fixing system allows a much wider variety of glass types,
including art and textured glass, to be used in a structural glass
application. Integral allows us to horizontally glaze an entire
roof or canopy without any fasteners in the exterior glass!
