The Sun
With the school year officially
over for Evesham students, the
June 26 meeting of the Evesham
Board of Education was brief,
consisting mostly of routine busi-
ness. However, one item of note
was when Marlton Elementary
School kindergarten teacher
Regina Spitalieri gave a brief
presentation to the board about
how the districts investments in
new technologies had enhanced
the chick hatching program that
happens in district kindergarten
classes every spring.
Tonight, Id like to give back a
little bit and let you know that
when you support our curricu-
lum programs and our technolo-
gy development, youre impact-
ing even our youngest learners,
Spitalieri said.
Each spring, kindergarten stu-
dents spend several weeks learn-

The Evesham Township July 4 celebra-
tion is just around the corner and you can
feel the excitement building as we prepare
the town for our large community gather-
ing.
The Evesham Celebrations Foundation
spends 365 days planning and preparing to
ensure July 4 runs smoothly. With coopera-
tion from our public works department, the
police department and emergency services,
I am confident we will host another suc-
cessful event.
I am thankful for the hard work that goes
into coordinating the festivities annually.
Residents and visitors will experience a
well-rounded July 4
celebration, begin-
ning with the
Mayors Cup 5k in
front of the fire-
house on Main
Street.
Its truly a re-
warding start to the
day, to be running
with my neigh-
bors, friends and
my wife. She has
been undefeated,
beating me each
year. Athletes, runners, people running for
fun and those attempting their first 5k, at-
tend the Mayors Cup. For me, mingling
with a mix of community members is the
true reward after crossing the finish line.
Shortly after the Mayors Cup 5k, hun-
dreds of children will commence the bike
parade down Main Street.
Marltons youth will be exemplifying
their best patriotism with smiles on their
faces.

INTERIMPUBLISHER
T
he U.S. Supreme Court last
week declined to rule on New
Jerseys fight against the feder-
al ban on sports gambling in all but
four states. To most, that would seem
like the final out, the last chance to
win has come and gone.
Gov. Christie, one of the biggest pro-
ponents of legalized sports gambling
in the state, responded that way when
asked about the decision. They said
no, so we have to move on, he said.
State Sen. Ray Lesniak, the champi-
on of the bill that attempted to over-
turn the federal ban, has other ideas,
though. Lesniak, in all his glory, has
no plans of dropping the fight.
While he is disappointed with the
Supreme Courts decision not to hear
New Jerseys case, he feels its not the
final blow to legalized sports gambling
in the state.
His solution unregulated sports
gambling. And he says judges for the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third
Circuit set the precedent for the legali-
ty of doing so in their decision last
September.
The federal law in question, the Pro-
fessional and Amateur Sports Protec-
tion Act of 1992, forbids states from ac-
tively encouraging sports gambling in
forms such as issuing licenses and pro-
moting the activity, in ways like New
Jersey does for its Atlantic City casi-
nos and racetracks across the state.
What the law doesnt do is say that
having no law prohibiting sports gam-
bling is unlawful.
Lesniak says the states of Washing-
ton and Colorado have set the prece-
dent for this type of unregulated activ-
ity. Federal law prohibits the manu-
facture and distribution of marijuana,
but they havent stepped in to stop Col-
orado and Washington from legalizing
it, according to Lesniak.
Hes right there, but thats quite the
slippery slope. With no regulation on
sports gambling, just imagine how cor-
rupt this could become. Weve all seen
movies such as Casino and docu-
mentaries on the subject is Lesniak
blind to the fact that it could happen
all over again in New Jersey? Atlantic
City could become the Las Vegas of
the 1950s, and no one wants that, not
even for more tax revenue.
Will professional sports leagues say
they no longer allow franchises to be
located in New Jersey because of this
unregulation? What about the NCAA?
Will the New Jersey Devils and Rut-
gers University football not be sanc-
tioned anymore? It could happen.
Sometimes in life, one needs to real-
ize the fight is lost, that one has been
defeated. This is one of those cases,
Ray Lesniak. Let it be.
Its time to wave the white flag
We lost the sports gambling fight, so its time to give it a rest
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on the Supreme
Courts decision not to hear New Jerseys
fight for sports gambling, or Ray Lesniaks
continued push to legalize it?

Cherokee senior
presented courage award
Burlington County Freehold-
ers presented the Loretta ODon-
nell Courage Award to Katie
Bednarek, a Cherokee High
School senior whose battle
against brain cancer has, in the
words of Freeholder Director
Bruce Garganio, underscored
her determination and her
strength of character and, in the
process, inspired us all.
From the time our search for
an award recipient began, all ar-
rows pointed to Katie, Garganio
said.
Her battle inspired her
lacrosse teammates, then the en-
tire Cherokee school community,
and finally, the South Jersey com-
munity-at-large. Even rival
lacrosse teams wore special rib-
bons adorned with Katies initials
in her honor.
Katie is unique in many ways,
but one thing that really strikes
us is her resolve, Garganio said.
She is a young woman facing a
huge challenge, with the same
never give up mentality that has
enabled her to excel in academics
and in sports.
Garganio presented the
Courage Award to Bednarek, a
National Honor Society Student
who graduated from Cherokee,
during a ceremonial meeting held
at the Burlington County Col-
leges Mount Holly Center. She is
the second recipient of the award.
Dozens of well-wishers were in
attendance, including Katies
mother, Denise, her father,
Joseph, her brother, Joe, family
members, friends, neighbors, as
well as her lacrosse coaches and
teammates, and Cherokee teach-
ers and staff.
Freeholders created the
Courage Award last year in honor
of the late Loretta ODonnell, a
former journalist and county em-
ployee whose fight against cancer
became a cause.
She joined support groups,
wrote newsletter articles and en-
gaged in a variety of activities to
uplift and encourage others who
were in her situation.
Her husband, Bill, and son,
Michael, also attended this
evenings ceremony, and extended
best wishes to Bednarek.
Garganio told Bednarek that
we all know what you have been
facing, and we have heard time
and again that you are a very
humble person really a team
player who never likes to be the
center of attention.
But this is our way of letting
you know we are sensitive to your
challenge, we are moved by your
courage, and most of all, we wish
you well.
It was exactly nine months ago
that Bednarek was diagnosed.
Because of medical treatments,
she completed her senior year on
a modified schedule, with tutors
coming to her home to help her
complete her schoolwork.
While she was unable to com-
pete in lacrosse this spring, she
attended many games, and her
teammates dedicated their season
to her.
By all accounts, she was the
teams lucky charm. When she
was on the sidelines, the team ex-
celled, and team members made
it clear that they wanted to win
for Katie.
Bednarek also managed to par-
ticipate in other senior year activ-
ities, including the senior prom
where she was pleasantly sur-
prised when she was chosen
prom queen.
The plaque presented to
Bednarek reads: Proudly Pre-
sented to Katie Bednarek who, in
the face of physical and mental
adversity, has demonstrated ex-
traordinary strength of charac-
ter, has emerged as an outstand-
ing role model for others, and has
touched and inspired us all.

CALENDAR PAGE 8 JULY 2-8, 2014
ing about chicks when theyre
given an incubator with fertilized
chicken eggs to keep watch over
until they hatch.
Eggs are labeled with numbers
to keep track as they rotate in the
incubator, which simulates a hen
rotating its eggs about 100 times a
day.
In past years, when the eggs
started to hatch, students would
crowd the incubator, making it a
challenge for each student to see
all of what was happening. The
hatching could also take several
hours, adding to the difficulty of
knowing when to look.
This year, however, Spitalieri
realized she could use the class-
rooms new document camera,
which captures images in real
time to display to a large audi-
ence, and project the hatching of
the chicks with a laptop through
the classrooms interactive white-
board on the wall.
This year was Spitalieris 16th
hatch, and compared to previous
hatches, she said she noticed
more engagement from students
than ever before.
It was on all day, so even
though we were able to focus and
go on with the rest of our lessons,
occasionally wed hear a child say
oh look it might be coming out
now, so we would stop and look
for a few seconds and go on with
our day, Spitalieri said. It really
kept them engaged the whole
time.
Spitalieri said students still got
the most out of the project by
looking into the box themselves
and having the chance to bring
out and pet the chick, but having
the hatching on in the back-
ground all day enhanced the ex-
perience.
I cant thank you enough for
having that technology in the
classroom, Spitalieri said. Its
not to necessarily replace that
real-life experience kindergarten-
ers will have, but it sure does en-
hance it and it keeps everybody
engaged throughout the day.
In other news:
Superintendent John Scavelli
gave a brief update on some of
the activities that will go on in the
district despite students being on
summer break.
The summer time, contrary to
popular belief, it is a very busy
time, Scavelli said. We have sev-
eral items of hiring that need to
be done, some positions that need
to be filled, a lot of curriculum
projects are starting this Monday
and right on through the sum-
mer.
Scavelli also commented on the
start of the districts new daycare
program, which was scheduled
to start on Monday, June 30.
Teddy Bear academy is open-
ing this Monday, and everything
looks really great at Marlton Mid-
dle School for that, and we appre-
ciate the efforts of Leah (Eve-
sham Child Care Coordinator
Leah Perlmutter) and everyone
involved, especially our mainte-
nance staff and the wonderful job
that they did over there, Scavelli
said.
Scavelli gave his best wishes
to district business administrator
Dennis Nettleton as it was his last
week working for the district.
Board member Sandy Student
inquired as to if there were any
noticeable increase in absences
during the shortened final week
of classes on June 23-24.
Scavelli said he did not believe
there were.

Mummers and a long line of joy-
ful noise will fill Main Street as
the large parade rolls through.
This is genuinely an important
moment for the community.
As the years progress, the cele-
bration gets larger. In 2013, Eve-
sham Township hosted more than
30,000 people to watch the fire-
works on July 4. Not on June 28 or
July 3 because it costs less, but
July 4.
We all sit together, bonding,
watching the parade and the fire-
works.
We, as Evesham residents,
enjoy the same experience and re-
member the importance of our
neighbors. It is at this moment I
am the most proud of our town.
Independence Day in our town
in its entirety is a celebration of
Evesham Townships community.
When I ran for mayor in 2007, it
was disappointing that our town
was void of a parade, one of the
true American community
events. Seven years later, the day
is unparalleled.
The quality of July 4 with your
loved ones and neighbors, as your
peers and officials line the streets
in celebration of American free-
dom and community, is memo-
rable.
Year after year, you keep a
memory of July 4 with you to
laugh about and share for years to
come with your children and
grandchildren.
Evesham truly rejoices and cel-
ebrates the way Americas inde-
pendence should be celebrated.
As the sun begins to set on the
joyful day, more than 30,000 peo-
ple will gather to watch the sky
light up with fireworks.
Evesham, we ask that you
come out and make the most of
your July 4 with us. Lets cele-
brate Americas independence
and all the amenities our town
has to offer.

American flags, barbecues, the
Mayors Cup 5k, a parade and a
spectacular fireworks display are
part of the Evesham Township

More than 30,000 people will be

Residents and visitors will ex-

the Mayors Cup 5k in front of the
firehouse on Main Street.
Shortly after the Mayors Cup
5k, hundreds of children will
commence the bike parade down
Main Street. Marltons youth will
be exemplifying their best patri-
otism with smiles on their faces.
At 11 a.m., Eveshams finest,
Cherokee High School Band, the
Fire-Rescue Squad, Mummers
and a long line of joyful noise will
fill Main Street as the large pa-
rade rolls through.
Crowds will begin to gather at 7
p.m. at Cherokee High School for
food, fun and games.
Promptly at 9:30 p.m., the fire-
works spectacular will begin.
The day will end by lighting the
sky with an incredible fireworks
display. It is a day Evesham Town-
ship can show what its all about
and what it has to offer its resi-
dents in terms of community and
American pride.
The Fourth of July celebration
is fully funded by the Evesham
Celebrations Foundation, a non-
profit organization promoting
community experiences through-
out Evesham Township. Events

Cherokee to continue One
Book, One School program
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The school year may have just
ended, but the Lenape Regional
High School District is already
looking forward to 2014-15.
The district is bringing back its
One Book, One School program
for the sixth time next year. Each
school has been assigned a book
to read over summer break.
Director of Curriculum
Heather Xenakis said the pro-
gram has proven to be successful
in promoting school spirit and
unity. She said the students are
much more eager to read the
books than they would be with a
grade level-specific book.
In the past, each of the differ-
ent levels read different books,
Xenakis said. Now, the entire
faculty and students are asked to
read one book. It has been em-
braced by the school communi-
ties.
This summer, Cherokee High
School will be reading, Basket-
ball Junkie: A Memoir by Chris
Herren and Bill Reynolds. The
book is a memoir of former NBA
player Chris Herren, whose life
and career were derailed because
of his addiction to heroin. In 2013,
the Cherokee community got to
see Herren speak in person dur-
ing an assembly.
Xenakis said the chosen books
have themes the teachers use in
their lessons throughout the
school year.
These themes don't just apply
to literature classes. Math and
science classes are able to apply
the themes as well.
The biggest impact One Book,
One School has had on the
Lenape district community has
been the excitement generated
among students. Xenakis said the
students have organized contests
and events related to the book.
Some of the schools have aca-
demic pep rallies, Xenakis said.
Some of them have contests.
This type of excitement was
unable to be achieved prior to the
program's launch.
In addition to each grade read-
ing a different book, there were
multiple books assigned depend-
ing on the students level of Eng-
lish class.
Now each school chooses a
book all levels of readers from
freshmen to seniors are able to
comprehend.
More information on the pro-
gram or the books for the other
Lenape district high schools can
be found on www.lrhsd.org.
