No. 126 of a Series on Our Parishs First 100 Years
School year 2007-2008 began for St. Charles faculty and students on September 4, 2007. For pre-kindergarten 3, pre-kindergarten 4, and kindergarten classes, extended day programs were offered for the year. For new and returning students, the technology committee had replaced the old computers with new ones. One teacher from the previous year, Robert Abshire, did not return, while three new teachers and two new aides joined the faculty. The new teachers were Mrs. Carolyn Kasper, Mrs. Yvonne McGilvary, and Pamela Turicek. The new aides were Mrs. Christina Reynolds and Mrs. Karen Lamberson. (Mrs. Lamberson resigned in October.) Returning faculty members included principal Sister Margaret Pietsch; teachers Beatrice Jacobson, Mrs. Barbara Davis-Witt, Peter Pappa, Mrs. Mary Hegeman, Mrs. Virginia Hegeman, David Lindow, Jeffrey Ingersoll, Scott Schlesner, MaryBeth Benz, Mrs. Michele Salmins, Mrs. Beth Falk, and Mrs. Alicia Plein; librarian and technology coordinator Mrs. Theresa Lancour; and teacher aides Mrs. Robin Monteith and Mrs. Debra Manthei. The Religious Education Program (REP) for students in kindergarten through grade 6 started on September 9, which was also Catechetical Sunday. On that day the parish honored and thanked the school and REP teachers for their generosity and openness in teaching the young people of St. Charles about the Catholic faith. The Home and School Association held its golf outing on September 10 at the Evergreen Golf Club in Elkhorn. Mrs. Laurie Miller again coordinated the event. The proceeds benefited St. Charles School. The parish held its annual fall festival, with the traditional family-style turkey dinner, on September 23. Mrs. Mary LaBadie headed the many volunteers who worked to make the festival a success. Festival-related activities included a vehicle / cash raffle, a sweepstakes, a bake sale and produce room, a craft raffle, a childrens raffle, a silent auction, bingo and other games, minnow races, a Spanish food tent, the Burlington Lions Club clowns, and music by the group Neutral Zone. Among those helping to coordinate the various activities were Mrs. Marlee Magdic, Mrs. Debra Manthei, Mrs. Carol Scherrer, Scott and Judy Lois, and Michael Yopp. The St. Ann Society held its annual fall rummage sale, headed by Mrs. Janice Richter, on October 27. Thanks to those who took the time to bring in the items that were offered for sale and the volunteers who helped set up, staff, and clean up after the event, the sale realized profits of over $2,000. On October 30 Pope Benedict XVI named Chicago-born Rev. William Patrick Callahan, OFM Conv., to be an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Bishop Callahan was the first Conventual Franciscan to be named a bishop in the United States. As an auxiliary bishop, Bishop Callahan was to serve the Church by helping Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Bishop Richard Sklba in the pastoral and spiritual leadership of the Archdiocese, and by assisting the Archbishop in his role as shepherd through teaching, leading, serving, and celebrating the sacraments with the people of the Archdiocese. Bishop Callahan, who had studied for the priesthood with the Conventual Franciscans in Illinois and earned a Masters in Bishop William P. Callahan Divinity at St. Michaels College at the University of Toronto, had been ordained to the priesthood in 1977 by Milwaukee Archbishop William Cousins. Father Callahan served in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee until 1978, when he returned to Illinois to serve as Director of Vocations for the Conventual Franciscans and then as associate pastor and then pastor at a parish in Peoria. In 1994, he returned to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee to serve as rector and pastor of the Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee, where he remained until 2005, when he became spiritual director of the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He held that position until named Auxiliary Bishop of Milwaukee. During October new carpeting was installed in the cry room at the back of the church. The carpet was donated by Bruce and Joyce Bauman, Phil and Marilyn DeGreef, Laurence and Linda Dornacher, and James and Carolyn Bauman. Gary Ketterhagen and Dennis Clapp donated their time to install it. On November 4 the St. Charles eighth grade class held a pancake breakfast in Andre Hall. Proceeds from the meal supported the class overnight retreat, the class trip, and graduation costs. In addition, proceeds helped fund the class gift to the school. The Religious Education Programs Advent Baby Project was conducted with a different twist in 2007. The fourth grade REP class decided to fill the back of a pickup truck with items for babies. The items, donated by the students, families, and other parishioners, were delivered to the St. Vincent de Paul charity. As 2007 ended following the parishs and schools services and activities celebrating the Christmas season, the parish books showed that 48 Baptisms, 8 marriages, 9 deaths, 59 First Communions, and 30 Confirmations had been recorded during the year. The end of the year also saw Mrs. Louan Luetten turning over the scheduling of Host and Cup Ministers to Mrs. Julie Aldrich. Mrs. Luetten had performed the voluntary service for several years and Mrs. Aldrich volunteered to take over the responsibility. Catholic Schools Week was observed from January 27 through February 2. The theme for 2008 was Catholic Schools Light the Way. Families were especially invited to the 8 a.m. Mass on January 27 and to the open house which followed the Mass. The students and faculty participated in special activities during the week. Also, registration for the 2008-2009 school year was held during the week. St. Charles School held its Charger Challenge basketball tournament from February 13 to February 24. The fifth grade teams both took first place in their competitions. The girls team defeated Holy Rosary of Kenosha in its championship game, while the boys team won over St. Leonards of Muskego. In March the eighth grade girls team won in the first two rounds of the Archdioceses Padre Serra Invitational Basketball Tournament at Mount Mary College, beating Christ King of Wauwatosa and St. Josephs of Kenosha. In the third round, the team lost to the eventual tournament champion, St. Matthias of Milwaukee. Members of St. Charles team included Emma Ketterhagen, Allison Hocking, Cassidy Robers, Samantha Reesman, Mackenzie Schneider, Britte Schneider, Erin Bittmann, and Jasmine Kawalec. The coaches were Mrs. Susan Bittmann, Steven Ketterhagen, and Brian Hocking. In one of the largest indoor grade school track and field meets in southeast Wisconsin, a combined team from St. Marys and St. Charles had a strong performance at the Pius XI Eighth Grade Indoor Championship Meet in April. Eighteen St. Charles athletes participated in the meet. The two Burlington schools girls team placed second overall, while the boys team, made up of seventh and eighth graders from both schools, placed seventh. The parish held its annual spaghetti supper on March 1 in Andre Hall. In addition to the meal, there were special chance raffle items offered to the attendees. Mrs. Sarah Wiess headed the dining room volunteers, while Mrs. Karen Middlecamp was in charge of the volunteers in the kitchen. Mrs. Barbara Richter was chairman of the event and coordinated the raffle items. During Lent the students of St. Charles raised over $1,500 for Love Inc.s Transitional Living Center after learning that it cost the Center $125 a night to provide shelter, food, and care to 20 homeless people. Each class worked together to come up with a creative way to raise funds to provide 12 nights of shelter. The pre-kindergarten, first, third, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades held a penny war. The kindergarten and fourth grades collected spare change and sponsored Wear-a-Hat-for-a-Dollar day. The second and fifth grades brought in treats for a bake sale. The sixth grade donated and sold healthy snacks during study hall and also donated the money earned by serving at funerals. The St. Ann Societys spring rummage and bake sale was held in Andre Hall on April 12. Mrs. Janice Richter again coordinated the event, which raised nearly $2,050. Responding to the interest and participation shown in the previous year, the Burlington area Catholic parishes St. Charles, St. Marys, and St. Josephs of Lyons presented the second Catholics Returning Home program offering non-practicing Catholics answers to their questions about renewing their relationship, or returning home, to the Church. The six-session series, coordinated by Mary Spiegelhoff, was held at St. Charles on Monday evenings from March 31 to May 5.
