‘If you build it, they will come’
Neighborhood efforts make Eastwood Park a reality prepare for unknown
Nine years ago, Christine
Rogers started lobbying her
Eastwood neighborhood to get
a playground built on Lippitt,
at the intersection of Sinclair.
She envisioned it as a gather-
ing place for all neighbors,
plus a place for all kids to run
and play. With a destination to
enjoy within walking distance
from their homes, new friend-
ships in the neighborhood
would be forged and, in so
doing, their community would
become stronger. Working
parents would have a quick and
easy place to take their kids on
nights and weekends. Mean-
while, neighbors home during
the day would have a place to
go to enjoy the outdoors. Off
the couches and down to the
park - that was the grand plan
Rogers envisioned.
Many neighbors were
excited about the idea, but
there was opposition, too.
Funding was a huge obstacle
– the group struggled looking
for grants and determined a
neighborhood fundraiser would
not work. The tipping point for
them was when the bond elec-
tion passed providing funding
for neighborhood parks. Leong
Lim worked with city council-
man Sheffie Kadane and Willis
Winters to direct city funding
to the playground. Without
their help, Rogers said, the
park would still be just a wide-
open space.

To appeal to all life stages,
the volunteers built a nature-
viewing platform set far apart
from the playground equipment
and abuts a creek bed. The area
has already been seen being
used by adults looking for a
place to quietly reflect and ob-

I got to see our commu-
nity volunteers in action last
Saturday night. We received an
e-mail about a CERT simula-
tion exercise taking place at the
White Rock United Methodist
Church, on Oldgate. Since I
have been interested in both
preparedness and community
involvement I was the natural
choice to check it out. Now,
I’m even more interested.
CERT stands for Com-
munity Emergency Response
Team. It is operated by the
Office of Emergency Man-
agement and is a volunteer
network of regular old people
like you and me who want
to be prepared to help their
community in the event of an
emergency or disaster. People
can sign up for training and the
training lasts about 20 hours.

Next week, I will go into
more detail about the what and
how of CERT. This week, I
want to tell you about what I
saw and experienced, so you
will be waiting anxiously to
find out how you can join up!
This past Saturday was the
first disaster simulation that
the CERT members had gone
into cold. At the end of each
training cycle they complete a
disaster simulation in order to
graduate. This one was a call
out for a simulation in which
the responding members had
not met for the most part and
were going in cold. Doug
Frazier, the president of White
Rock’s CERT and Joe Clark,
the liaison with the OEM,
planned the simulation and
with the help of other trainers,
designed victims.

detector is in the garage where
it hasn’t been touched since
Christmas Day 2008. And the
pottery wheel? It broke the first
time we tried to use it.
Enough is enough. I
hereby declare I am done with
the “buying the item of the
moment” craze. This holiday
season, there’s a new kid in
town.
If it is not about giving
to others, my family is not
participating. Of course, my
children don’t know this yet.
They may fuss a bit, or beg and
plead, but I am going to do my
best to stand my ground. And
be prudent.
So, let the holiday games
begin. I’ll be the one sitting
on the sidelines with my hot
chocolate, and my closed wal-
let, watching the frenzy go by.

THE SECOND OF THE THREE SPIRITS
SCROOGE awoke in his bedroom. There
was no doubt about that. But it and his own
adjoining sitting-room, into which he shuffled
in his slippers, attracted by a great light there,
had undergone a surprising transformation.
The walls and ceiling were so hung with liv-
ing green, that it looked a perfect grove. The
leaves of holly, mistletoe, and ivy reflected
back the light, as if many little mirrors had
been scattered there; and such a mighty blaze
went roaring up the chimney, as that petrifac-
tion of a hearth had never known in Scrooge’s
time, or Marley’s, or for many and many a
winter season gone. Heaped upon the floor,
to form a kind of throne, were turkeys, geese,
game, brawn, great joints of meat, sucking
pigs, long wreaths of sausages, mince-pies,
plum-puddings, barrels of oysters, red-hot
chestnuts, cherry-cheeked apples, juicy or-
anges, luscious pears, immense twelfth- cakes,
and great bowls of punch. In easy state upon
this couch there sat a Giant glorious to see;
who bore a glowing torch, in shape not unlike
Plenty’s horn, and who raised it high to shed
its light on Scrooge, as he came peeping round
the door.
“Come in, – come in! and know me bet-
ter, man! I am the Ghost of Christmas Present.
Look upon me! You have never seen the like
of me before!”
“Never.”
“Have never walked forth with the
younger members of my family; meaning (for
I am very young) my elder brothers born in
these late years?” pursued the Phantom.
“I don’t think I have, I am afraid I have
not. Have you had many brothers, Spirit?”
“More than eighteen hundred.”
“A tremendous family to provide for!
Spirit, conduct me where you will. I went
forth last night on compulsion, and I learnt a
lesson which is working now. To-night, if you
have ought to teach me, let me profit by it.”
“Touch my robe!”
Scrooge did as he was told, and held it
fast.
The room and its contents all vanished in-
stantly, and they stood in the city streets upon
a snowy Christmas morning.
Scrooge and the Ghost passed on, invis-
ible, straight to Scrooge’s clerk’s; and on the
threshold of the door the Spirit smiled, and
stopped to bless Bob Cratchit’s dwelling with
the sprinklings of his torch. Think of that!
Bob had but fifteen “Bob” a week himself; he
pocketed on Saturdays but fifteen copies of his
Christian name; and yet the Ghost of Christ-
mas Present blessed his four-roomed house!
Then up rose Mrs. Cratchit, Cratchit’s
wife, dressed out but poorly in a twice-turned
gown, brave in ribbons, which are cheap and
make a goodly show for sixpence; and she laid
the cloth, assisted by Belinda Cratchit, second
of her daughters, also brave in ribbons; while
Master Peter Cratchit plunged a fork into the
saucepan of potatoes, and, getting the corners
of his monstrous shirt-collar (Bob’s private
property, conferred upon his son and heir in
honor of the day) into his mouth, rejoiced to
find himself so gallantly attired, and yearned
to show his linen in the fashionable Park. And
now two smaller Cratchits, boy and girl came
tearing in, screaming that outside the baker’s
they had smelt the goose, and known it for
their own; and, basking in luxurious thoughts
of sage and onion, these young Cratchits
danced about the table, and exalted Master Pe-
ter Cratchit to the skies, while he (not proud,
although his collars nearly choked him) blew
the fire, until the slow potatoes, bubbling up,
knocked loudly at the saucepan-lid to be let
out and peeled.
“What has ever got your precious father
then?” said Mrs. Cratchit. “And your brother
Tiny Tim! And Martha warn’t as late last
Christmas day by half an hour!”
“Here’s Martha, mother!” said a girl, ap-
pearing as she spoke.
“Here’s Martha, mother!” cried the two
young Cratchits. “Hurrah! There’s such a
goose, Martha!”
“Why, bless your heart alive, my dear,
how late you are!” said Mrs. Cratchit, kissing
her a dozen times, and taking off her shawl
and bonnet for her.
“We’d a deal of work to finish up last
night,” replied the girl, “and had to clear away
this morning, mother!”
“Well! Never mind so long as you are
come,” said Mrs. Cratchit. “Sit ye down be-
fore the fire, my dear, and have a warm, Lord
bless ye!”
“No, no! There’s father coming,” cried the
two young Cratchits, who were everywhere at
once. “Hide, Martha, hide!”
So Martha hid herself, and in came little
Bob, the father, with at least three feet of
comforter, exclusive of the fringe, hanging
down before him; and his threadbare clothes
darned up and brushed, to look seasonable;
and Tiny Tim upon his shoulder. Alas for Tiny
Tim, he bore a little crutch, and had his limbs
supported by an iron frame!
“Why, where’s our Martha?” cried Bob
Cratchit, looking round.
“Not coming,” said Mrs. Cratchit.
“Not coming!” said Bob, with a sudden
declension in his high spirits; for he had been
Tim’s blood-horse all the way from church,
and had come home rampant, – “not coming
upon Christmas day!”
Martha didn’t like to see him disap-
pointed, if it were only in joke; so she came
out prematurely from behind the closet door,
and ran into his arms, while the two young
Cratchits hustled Tiny Tim, and bore him off
to the wash-house that he might hear the pud-
ding singing in the copper.
“And how did little Tim behave?” asked
Mrs. Cratchit, when she had rallied Bob on his
credulity, and Bob had hugged his daughter to
his heart’s content.
“As good as gold,” said Bob, “and bet-
ter. Somehow he gets thoughtful, sitting by
himself so much, and thinks the strangest
things you ever heard. He told me, coming
home, that he hoped the people saw him in
the church, because he was a cripple, and it
might be pleasant to them to remember, upon
Christmas day, who made lame beggars walk
and blind men see.”
Bob’s voice was tremulous when he told
them this, and trembled more when he said
that Tiny Tim was growing strong and hearty.
His active little crutch was heard upon the
floor, and back came Tiny Tim before another
word was spoken, escorted by his brother and
sister to his stool beside the fire; and while
Bob, turning up his cuffs, – as if, poor fellow,
they were capable of being made more shabby,
– compounded some hot mixture in a jug
with gin and lemons, and stirred it round and
round and put it on the hob to simmer, Master
Peter and the two ubiquitous young Cratchits
went to fetch the goose, with which they soon
returned in high procession.
Mrs. Cratchit made the gravy (ready
beforehand in a little saucepan) hissing hot;
Master Peter mashed the potatoes with incred-
ible vigor; Miss Belinda sweetened up the
apple-sauce; Martha dusted the hot plates; Bob
took Tiny Tim beside him in a tiny corner at
the table; the two young Cratchits set chairs
for everybody, not forgetting themselves, and
mounting guard upon their posts, crammed
spoons into their mouths, lest they should
shriek for goose before their turn came to be

Every fall, I have the
privilege of doing play-by-play
announcing for Pop Warner
football in Harmony, Florida,
and every fall I get ripped by
some angry parent because I
mispronounced the name of
their kid.
Fair enough.
I admit that
I am not the
brightest
light on the
string. How-
ever, it begs
the question,
why would
a parent hang some of these
monikers on their kids?
Unless you choose to
change it, you are stuck with
your last name. Far be it from
me to make fun of anybody
else’s last name. When you
have a moniker like “Aun”
your margin for error is pretty
slim. I have heard all the
jokes: “Right Aun” and “is the
mic Aun?” Bad-da-boop! I was
born with that last name so I
am stuck with it by birth.
A good question to ask is
why would Tom Cruise name
his kid Suri? I was thinking…
what if I had named my twin
sons Sertoma and Kiwanas and
my third boy, Toastmasters?
Sertoma Aun?
So when a parent gives me
grief because I do not recog-
nize Mykel as a new way of
spelling Michael, they get in
my face. And how would you
pronounce Nikkolouas? I as-
sume it is a 50-cent handle for
Nick. One of the parents actu-
ally named his son “Sir.” Okay,
at least I can pronounce that.

New twist on reverse mortgages

Reverse mortgages have
become an increasingly
popular way for seniors to keep
pace with rising expenses. Typ-
ically, people borrow against
their home equity and continue
to live in the home with no
monthly
mortgage
payment
until they
move out
perma-
nently,
sell the
property
or die.
Rec-
ognizing that many seniors
would prefer to downsize
homes after retirement or relo-
cate to another area, however,
the government issued new
guidelines that now allow
reverse mortgages to be used to
purchase a new home, pro-
vided proceeds from the sale of
the old home (combined with
other cash reserves, if neces-
sary) cover the sales price, plus
closing costs.
The advantage for these
folks is that they don’t have to
tap as much of their savings
or be tied to monthly repay-
ments in order to purchase a
new home as with a traditional
mortgage or home equity loan/
line of credit.
Reverse mortgages can be
very complicated and expen-

The most sensitive parents
are the mothers of the Cheer
Squads. I see the name Taylor
a lot nowadays. Taylor could
be used for either a boy or a
girl name. I was in the “liquid
library” the other day (you
know, the head) and the closest
reading material was my wife’s
People magazine. As I was
thumbing through, I learned
that Taylor Swift was dating
Taylor Lautner. I have never
heard of either of these people
so I am not sure which one is
the guy and which is the gal.
It occurred to me, if they get
married and decide to name
their kid Taylor, who would
they be naming it after? I guess
the tiebreaker goes to the last
name, huh?
The mom that got the
angriest was a lady from visit-
ing Avalon Park. She could not
understand why I could not
pronounce Dalmarylis cor-
rectly. It turns out that it is long
for Mary… and I was supposed
to figure that out … how?
And then there was the
father who got upset because
I left off the Roman numeral
after his kid’s name, Joseph
Thorton, VIII. He assured me
he would not sue if I would call
him simply “the great eight.”
Go ahead, sue me.
And then there are the stars
of one Harmony Longhorn
team whose last names were
Ferkel and Sterkel. Sounds like
a Wall Street law firm.
The names get tougher
each year… Chioneso, Tal-
isheiah, Alyssee, Caralione,
Corinna, Jaidaheou, Layla-Jada
(LJ for short). Why not just call
her LJ?
Some parents insist on the
sive, so for many they aren’t
the best borrowing option. In
fact, you are required to consult
a U.S. Department of Hous-
ing and Urban Development
(HUD)-approved counselor
before being allowed to apply.
A few common features of
reverse mortgages:
• You must be at least age
62.
• The home (current or
future) must be your principal
residence.
• You must own the home
outright or be able to pay it off
with proceeds from the loan.
• The allowable loan
amount is based on your
home’s appraised value, your
age, current interest rates, mort-
gage insurance and applicable
fees. Generally, the older you
are and the more valuable your
home, the greater the available
loan.
• You needn’t repay the
loan until you move out perma-
nently, sell the property or die.
Any money left after the sale
goes to you or your estate.
• The repayment amount
never exceeds the home’s final
sale value, so you (or your
heirs) are never liable for more
than you originally borrowed.
• Reverse mortgages have
no minimum income or credit
score requirements.
• You can take the money
as a lump sum, a line of credit,
fixed monthly payments or any
combination.

name like Bartholomew, I can’t
suddenly rename him “mad
dog” no matter how many
times his dad pounds on the
press box door.
There is nothing wrong
with a kid with the last name
Robert, but why complicate
his life by naming him Robert
Robert. My spell-check on my
computer is going crazy as I try
to write this column. You will
not believe all the underlined
words.
One of my all time favor-
ites was a kid named Cameron
Hartfield-Sullemun-Hixen-
bugh. Every time this kid ran
the ball I was screwing his
name up. His father arrived at
the press box mid way during
the first quarter to advise me to
just call him Bo. I had to ask,
“Why Bo?” Turns out that Hix-
enbugh is actually pronounced
Hix-en-BO’. “And Bo skirts
around the right end and it’s
no-go-for-Bo as he is stopped
dead in his tracks.”
Another mistake is to
nickname some kid you know.
A family friend has a kid name
Austin so I nicknamed him
“Awesome Austin.” The next
week the family shows up with
tee shirts with “Awesome Aus-
tin” emblazed on the back. The
family was pleased but other
parents could not understand
why I would not refer to their
kid as “mad dog” or “killer” or
“Jake-the-snake” or “Cracker
Harry.” Sometimes you can
not win when you have a mi-
crophone in your hand.
• It’s not considered tax-
able income so Social Security
and Medicare benefits usually
aren’t impacted.
Observe these cautions,
however:
• Reverse mortgages can
be expensive: An origination
fee up to $6,000, initial insur-
ance premium of 2 percent of
the home’s value, a monthly
insurance fee and other miscel-
laneous charges may apply.
• They aren’t cost-effective
if you plan to move in a few
years.
• You are responsible for
homeowner’s fees, property
taxes, insurance and repairs. If
you don’t pay them, you risk
loan cancellation or foreclo-
sure.
• The longer you carry a
reverse mortgage, the more it
will decrease your home equity,
and thus, your estate.
However, weigh that
and living in your own home
against the expense and pos-
sible inconvenience of an
assisted living facility.

to creek beds, creek bed trails,
butterfly garden, seating on the
nature viewing platform, an
interactive sundial installed on
the ground, ramps to connect
paths to boardwalks (to ensure
accessibility)
Karen Woodard, from
the city’s forestry department,
donated seventeen (17) 15- to
20-gallon trees to provide
added shade cover in the park
and replace dying or dead
ones removed during the park
construction. At the Saturday
ribbon cutting, she showed
neighbors the proper way to
plant them. Woodard also
brought her “Citizen Foresters”
group of volunteers to supple-
ment the neighborhood’s own
“Citizen For-
esters” were

force to help

Holiday Top 10 is
journey toward
healing, happiness
The holidays are upon
us and it is time to imagine
the fun we will have and the
joy we will feel when we see
our loved ones. But for many
people the gathering of the
relatives is a time to argue and
be reminded of unresolved
pain that flows through our
collective family veins. You
would like to have peace
this year, I know. You could
invite a family therapist over
for dinner but that may be
awkward. What about watching
a movie? Curl up alone with
a warm bucket of popcorn or
commune emotionally with
the family members on the old
family couch. There’s joy to
be discovered but also a little
catharsis, as well.
In Cinema Therapy,
movies are recommended to
the client to work through
sticky issues or get in touch
with stuck emotions. Here are
10 movies I would recommend
to rent for the holidays to help
further your journey toward
wholeness and happiness.

from McAllen, Catherine
Hardwicke’s The Nativity
Story (2006). Catherine was
able to tell the story of Jesus’
birth in a most sensitive and
heartfelt manner that has never
been done quite so beautifully.
Watch it with your family and
let it fill you with the joy of
Christ’s birth.
3. Little Lord Fauntleroy
(1980) is an obscure movie
that may not be a Christmas
classic but it sings with joy
and good will for our fellow
man. Rick Schroder plays the
title character whose name
is “Ceddie Errol” and Alec
Guinness plays his crusty
old grandfather, the Earl of
Dorrincourt. If your heart
does not melt with Ceddie’s
indomitable, generous spirit,
you’re in need of some kind of
spiritual tune-up. This movie
reinvigorates my resolve to

Catherine Hardwicke’s The Nativity Story (2006).

4. Although Titanic (1998)
is a tragedy of gargantuan
proportions, James Horner has
written a first class musical
score whose ethereal quality
soars with the soulfulness of
Scotch-Irish-English sounds
and melodies. If you love
movie soundtracks, this one
is near the top of the list. The
pathos of the great ship’s tragic
end helps to heal your own
personal losses and tragedies
as you feel fully your inner
pain. The music will help heal,
though, and will go on in your
heart and in your mind. “Near,
far, wherever you are, I believe
that the heart does go on.” If
you can hear that song and not
tear up, well, you‘ve got some
kind of trap door on your heart
that only you can unhinge.
5. Christmas is a time to
celebrate the childlike fantasy
in all of us. Rent Finding
Neverland (2004) and watch
how the young James M.
Barrie is inspired to create
Peter Pan and his gang of
adventurers. The ending is an
invitation to discover the child
within, fully feel your pent up
emotions and let the healing
tears flow. Starring Johnny
Depp, Kate Winslet, Julie
Christie, and Dustin Hoffman.
6. Heavenly Creatures
(1994), based on a true story,
begins with a tragedy but
the movie goes to flashback
to explain all that has led
to this act of aggression.
Peter Jackson (Lord of the
Rings), Kate Winslet (Titanic)
and Melanie Lynskey (The
Informant) are all beginners
but they create a masterpiece
as if they were old pros. This
magical fantasy woven by
Jackson is a celluloid dream
come true for all who are
willing to follow. (That’s three
Kate Winslet movies in a row!)
7. Tess (1980). If you
love the English Countryside
the opening scenes of Tess
are pure magic. The music

Recipe and Story of the Week
With the snap of Fall upon us, my thoughts turn, like so
many colorful leaves, to one of the warm, meaty, and oh so fill-
ing dishes of autumn. There are many different varieties of this
favorite entree, from many different countries and ethnicities.
And it’s equally delicious in any language! Since my heritage
hinges on a Bavarian cuckoo clock, my always lovely, and
temporarily Teutonic, wife Beatta, (aka Betty) has selected this
German-style recipe, to be enjoyed on a cool and crisp day. We
wish you warm and fuzzies.

Beatta’s German Stuffed Cabbage
from Betty’s Blue Ribbon Fare
1 large head Savory cabbage
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small onion chopped fine
1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1/3 cup dried seasoned bread crumbs
1/4 cup long grain rice, boiled until just tender, drained
1 large egg
1/2 cup sweet red wine
Salt and pepper
1 (16 oz.) can whole berry cranberry sauce
1 (14 oz.) can diced tomatoes
1/4 cup golden raisins
Freeze cabbage until very firm, at least 24 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Heat the oil in a large skil-
let over medium heat until shimmering. Cook the onion until
golden. Add 1/2 cup of the tomato sauce and simmer until
slightly thickened. Transfer mixture to a medium bowl and let
cool completely. In the same skillet, brown the ground beef.
Stir in the wine and scrape up any brown bits off the bottom.
Mix in the tomato/onion mixture, bread crumbs, rice, egg, 1
teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Set aside to cool.
Combine the cranberry sauce, the remaining tomato sauce,
diced tomatoes, raisins and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large bowl.
Reserve 1/2 cup of this mixture and pour the remaining sauce
into the bottom of a 9x13” baking dish.
Place the frozen cabbage under warm running water and
gently pull off 12 of the large outer leaves. Pull off 6 more and
set aside. Divide the filling evenly among the 12 outer leaves.
Roll the leaves around the filling and tuck in the ends to create
an envelope. Place them in the baking dish in a single layer
on top of the sauce. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
Pour the reserved sauce over the cabbage rolls. Cover the cab-
bage rolls with the 6 reserved cabbage leaves. Place a piece of
parchment paper over the dish, then wrap tightly in foil.
Bake until the cabbage is completely tender and cooked
through, about 1-1/2 hours. Remove foil and parchment and
continue to bake until the sauce reduces slightly. Remove and
discard the top layer of cabbage leaves and serve.

Bath House welcomes new “friends”

to the Bath House Cultural
Center for what turned out to
be a splendid 2009 Winter Art
Mart opening. The evening
reception, which provided
food and music, was filled
with forty exceptional artists
and kicked off a weekend long
silent auction helping support
year-round visual and perform-
ing arts. Buyers and bidders
filled the rooms and hallways
in what was almost a tightly
packed house. The success of
the evening, however, was in
launching “Friend” member-
ships for “Friends of the Bath
House Cultural Center,” a new
non-profit organization helping
fund and augment the Center’s
basic art and cultural programs.

Two weeks ago, Clarissa
Almaraz, of White Rock Lake
Weekly, began the Holiday
Challenge at Oleng, a life man-
agement center near Northpark
Shopping Center. Oleng’s
Holiday Challenge consists of
a 90-day fat loss program that
guides individuals through all
the festivities and parties that
come with the season. Oleng’s
dietitian, Carla Hughes, teaches
clients how to not only survive
the Holiday season, but how
to enjoy the season while still
losing weight.
Week one was Clarissa’s
first official appointment where
she received real world tools
and education needed to not
only lose body fat, but to jump-
start her weight loss efforts.
Carla also performed a body
analysis on Clarissa with the

been relinquished from their
owners or found wandering in
the streets. In my rescue and
fostering experience, I have
become a foster parent to six
Standard poodles, a Beagle,
a King Charles Cavalier, two
Great Danes, three Wheaton
Terriers, a mother Bichon Frise
and her three adorable babies,
a Llewellin Setter, a Schitzu, a
Golden Retriever, and a Beau
Obama look a like.
Then, there are my cats
who were definitely ALL
pure-bred; all fluffy balls of fur
in every imaginable style and
color. The good thing is that
ALL of these fosters, both the
dogs and the cats, did come
with papers. Mostly newspa-
pers, which they either pooped
on or chewed up. But, never the
less, they all used papers and
they all arrived to me with the
most loving dispositions and
thankful personalities ever. I
feel so lucky to have been able
to have been a part of their
lives, to have saved them, loved
them and made their lives bet-
ter before returning them to the
SPCA to find their own family
and forever home.
Since we are on the subject
of adopting that special four
legged family member for
Christmas, I want to remind ev-
eryone that the SPCA of Texas
opens their annual Adoption
Center at North Park on Nov.
27 – and it runs through Janu-

unsweet tea. Slowly, she will
get to the point where she can
drink her tea completely un-

puppies all anxiously awaiting
their new homes. Every hope-
ful SPCA pet chosen for North
Park also shares this feeling
and they all put their “best
paw” forward!
For all of you devoted
North Park fans and alumnus, it
all started in 1990, when Billy
Hines, the General Manager for
North Park Center, approached
the SPCA of Texas with the
idea of having a permanent
adoption pavilion at the shop-
ping center during the Holiday
Season. That first year, the
North Park Adoption pavilion
opened and the well recognized
Red and White adoption house
made Christmas much merrier
for 281 cats and dogs in its first
season.

have to starve herself. Instead,
she loads up on nutrient rich
snacks.
At Clarissa’s first weigh
in appointment, she was

helps to increase energy and
speed up the metabolic process.
She has noticed that she does
not have a lack of energy, feels
great, and is more inclined to
walk every night as part of
her exercise plan. This week,
she will be adding yoga to her

ration. Eked out by apple-sauce and mashed
potatoes, it was a sufficient dinner for the
whole family; indeed, as Mrs. Cratchit said
with great delight (surveying one small atom

at last! Yet every one had had enough, and the
youngest Cratchits in particular were steeped
in sage and onion to the eyebrows! But now,
the plates being changed by Miss Belinda,
Mrs. Cratchit left the room alone, – too ner-
vous to bear witnesses, – to take the pudding
up, and bring it in.

pose somebody should have got over the wall
of the back yard, and stolen it, while they
were merry with the goose, -- a supposition at
which the two young Cratchits became livid!
All sorts of horrors were supposed.
Hallo! A great deal of steam! The pud-
ding was out of the copper. A smell like a
washing-day! That was the cloth. A smell like
an eating-house and a pastry-cook’s next door
to each other with a laundress’s next door to
that! That was the pudding! In half a minute
Mrs. Cratchit entered, – flushed but smiling
proudly, – with the pudding, like a speckled
cannon-ball, so hard and firm, blazing in half
of half a quartern of ignited brandy, and be-
dight with Christmas holly stuck into the top.
O, a wonderful pudding! Bob Cratchit
said, and calmly too, that he regarded it as the
greatest success achieved by Mrs. Cratchit
since their marriage. Mrs. Cratchit said that
now the weight was off her mind, she would
confess she had had her doubts about the
quantity of flour. Everybody had something to
say about it, but nobody said or thought it was
at all a small pudding for a large family. Any
Cratchit would have blushed to hint at such a
thing.
At last the dinner was all done, the cloth
was cleared, the hearth swept, and the fire
made up. The compound in the jug being
tasted, and considered perfect, apples and or-
anges were put upon the table, and a shovelful
of chestnuts on the fire.
Then all the Cratchit family drew round
the hearth, in what Bob Cratchit called a
circle, and at Bob Cratchit’s elbow stood the
family display of glass, -- two tumblers, and a
custard-cup without a handle.
These held the hot stuff from the jug,
however, as well as golden goblets would
have done; and Bob served it out with beam-
ing looks, while the chestnuts on the fire
sputtered and crackled noisily. Then Bob
proposed: --
“A Merry Christmas to us all, my dears.
God bless us!”

The children drank the toast after her. It
was the first of their proceedings which had
no heartiness in it. Tiny Tim drank it last of
all, but he didn’t care twopence for it. Scrooge
was the ogre of the family. The mention of his
name cast a dark shadow on the party, which
was not dispelled for full five minutes.
After it had passed away, they were ten
times merrier than before, from the mere relief
of Scrooge the Baleful being done with. Bob
Cratchit told them how he had a situation in
his eye for Master Peter, which would bring
in, if obtained, full five and sixpence weekly.
The two young Cratchits laughed tremen-
dously at the idea of Peter’s being a man of
business; and Peter himself looked thoughtful-
ly at the fire from between his collars, as if he
were deliberating what particular investments
he should favor when he came into the receipt
of that bewildering income. Martha, who was
a poor apprentice at a milliner’s, then told
them what kind of work she had to do, and
how many hours she worked at a stretch, and
how she meant to lie abed to-morrow morn-
ing for a good long rest; to-morrow being a
holiday she passed at home. Also how she had
seen a countess and a lord some days before,
and how the lord “was much about as tall as
Peter”; at which Peter pulled up his collars so
high that you couldn’t have seen his head if
you had been there. All this time the chestnuts
and the jug went round and round; and by and
by they had a song, about a lost child travel-
ling in the snow, from Tiny Tim, who had a
plaintive little voice, and sang it very well
indeed.
There was nothing of high mark in this.
They were not a handsome family; they were
not well dressed; their shoes were far from be-
ing water proof; their clothes were scanty; and
Peter might have known, and very likely did,
the inside of a pawnbroker’s. But they were
happy, grateful, pleased with one another, and
contented with the time; and when they faded,
and looked happier yet in the bright sprin-
klings of the Spirit’s torch at parting, Scrooge
had his eye upon them, and especially on Tiny
Tim, until the last.

The scenario was that a
tornado had touched down on
White Rock Lake and stayed
on the ground until about
Town East Mall. The church
had known groups meeting
in it and professional rescue
was unavailable to check it
out. The victims were spread
throughout the building. Doug
instigated a phone tree at about
6:30 and the calls rolled across
the phone tree calling the other
team members in.
Students from PCI (a
medical technology school)
among others volunteered to
play victims. The victims ar-
rived about two hours prior to
the beginning of the simulation
to get made up. Two CERT
trainers, Jake and Chris did
the injuries. They are from
Outback Effects and usually
do special effects for mov-
ies. It was GORY! They did a
great job. They even had blood
bags to simulate arterial bleeds
when a piece of collapsed roof
was moved off of a victim.
The victims are designed
in advance and the CERT
members do not know ahead of
time what they will be walking
into. Depending on how they
assess and treat the victims,
they could end up moving
someone with a neck injury
and paralyzing them or having
someone pinned that they can’t
get out. For instance, one of
the victims in this scenario was
a pregnant woman who was
