Innovative theatre company Box Tale Soup invites you to join them in a world of
beautiful paper puppetry and wondrous fantasy. Drawing on both 'Adventures in
Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass', Alices Adventures in Wonderland takes its audience down the rabbit hole into Lewis Carrolls absurd but enchanting world of Cheshire cats, endless tea parties, and run-ins with the Queen of Hearts. No matter how old or young, everyone will find their own moment of magic in Wonderland and make it safely home again - the only danger is, you may not want to leave...
In this original adaptation, with a cast of just two actors and a consort of colourful paper puppets, Carroll's Wonderland is reimagined for the stage, presented a with curious but charming array of handmade characters, props and costumes. The show picks and chooses from Carrolls books, selecting some of the less familiar vignettes alongside favourites such as The Mad Hatters Tea Party and the superbly done Appearance of the Cheshire Cat.
At the centre of the piece is a large trunk that acts as a three-dimensional fold-out story book; from its magical interior forests and gardens emerge in ever-changing scenes, along with the puppets and even newsprint costumes. In theatre, stages are no strangers to cardboard props, but Box Tale Soup go above and beyond with a beautifully crafted mini-theatre. Adventures in Wonderland features a cast of just two human performers: with masterful puppetry skills, Antonia Christophers and Noel Byrne slip in and out of the various characters of Wonderland with well-rehearsed ease, creating the impression of an expansive cast. One moment Christophers is Alice, sweetly nave, but in the next reappears as a troupe of extremely cheeky puppet daisies. Byrne gives a fantastic characterisation of the Cheshire cat, the talking flowers, and the Queen of Hearts; his musical performance of Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee is a particular highlight in a multitude of beautifully performed characters.
The show is accompanied by an original score by Dan Melrose, which provides the perfect touch of intrigue and magic to this charming stage experience. The overall effect is to produce a very enjoyable hour of child-friendly theatre that makes Carrolls absurd tale accessible and endlessly enjoyable for a younger audience.
Performers Noel and Antonia have appeared in shows such as Doctor Who, HBO's Game of Thrones, BBC's The Hour and CBBC's Mission 2110. The performance runs at 55mins with no interval. For directions to Pickering Kirk Theatre, use postcode YO18 7DL.
