Featured Artist: Igor Koutsenko
The Amulet
Solo Show SDAI:MOLA August 31 to September 23, 2012
BIOGRAPHY:
Igor Koutsenko was born in Evpatoria, a resort city on the Crimean
Peninsula on the Black Sea. His father brought Igor to the Childrens
Art School in his hometown after his son demonstrated artistic
ability at a young age. At age eleven, Koutsenko was accepted to
the adult art studio directed by the acclaimed artist Zvyagintesev
who encouraged his talent. Later Igor was educated at the Penza
School of Art (class of E. Iodynis) and received rigorous training
in the old traditions of Russian realist art. While living in Moscow,
he successfully used the Moscow art market to sell his works to
Russian and foreign collectors. His experience in Moscow allowed
him to fully realize himself as an independent artist.
Koutsenko immigrated to the United States in 1992 settling in
Oklahoma City where he taught fne art at the University of Central
Oklahoma. In 1995, he was granted permanent United States
residentship as an alien of extraordinary abilities.
In 1998 Koutsenko visited Southern California and was attracted
by its beautiful scenery and climate that reminded him of his
boyhood surroundings in Crimea. Since moving to Southern
California, he continues to produce original work at his private
studio in Fallbrook. Igor also teaches drawing and painting classes
at the Fallbrook School of The Arts.
Throughout his career, Igor was featured in numerous articles,
newspapers, and magazines as well as on artistaday.com. Please
visit the PRESS page for some excerpts. Igor also appeared in
Artbreak on the Bravo channel.
Igors work is in the collection of the Riverside Art Museum, Pfzer
Pharmaceutical Company, Institute for Specialized Medicine and
the Hoffman Trust Collection, as well as numerous distinguished
private collections throughout the United States.

The Professional Artist Lecture Series presented by the
San Diego Art Institute is geared to educate artists in
running a successful business, as well as expanding their
knowledge of art techniques.
Guest Speaker:
Heike Brachlow
Bullseye Cast Glass Artist

Art Glass Assoc. of Southern California is
pleased to bring Heike down from Portland
where she has a show at the Bullseye Glass
Gallery. She will show slides and talk about her
cast glass art. She taught at Corning this past
July. Dont miss this wonderful opportunity to
meet and learn. http://www.heikebrachlow.com/
Saturday, Sept. 1 starting @ 4pm
All lectures are held at the
San Diego Art Institute:Museum of the Living Artist
Born and raised in Munich, Germany, Heike Brachlow
discovered glass while living in New Zealand, where
she worked as a glassblower in a small studio in
Rotorua. She received her BA in 2004 from the
University of Wolverhampton and her MA and PhD
from the Royal College of Art in London in 2006 and
2012. Her work has been exhibited in the UK, New
Zealand, Europe, Japan and in the USA. Heike draws
her inspiration from her travels, human interaction,
architecture and geometry. Due to a love of colour
and a frustration with the limited palette available in
glass, she makes her own coloured glass.
A liking for the unexpected results in sculpture that
works on different levels and somehow transcends
objecthood: the work physically engages the viewer.
Monumental solid cylinders move effortlessly when
touched, delineating time and space. Forms stacked
on top of each other might fall at any moment to create
chaos, geometric shapes precariously balance on a
single point of contact.
Admission: FREE SDAI/SDAD members / $5 non-members
On Thurs., Oct. 25, Poetry & Art Series
2012 features Poetry International with
special guests Steve Kowit and Sandra
Alcosser. Doors open at 6:30pm and show
starts at 7pm. Poetry International is an
annual literary journal published by SDSU
with Ilya Kaminsky as editor-in-chief. Steve
Kowit is the author of In the Palm of Your
Hand: The Poets Portable Workshop,
a go-to text for writing poetry. Sandra Alcosser
started the MFA Program in Creative Writing
at SDSU and formerly directed Central Parks
Poets-In-The-Park program in NYC. There
will also be readings by selected MFA poets
from SDSU.
Ben Chung and Al Howard will provide live
music. There will be treats and beverages as
always. If you would like to participate on the

The Gathering is a social, relaxed group where artists,
afcionados, their spouses or signifcant others meet
over potluck to discuss their latest work and adventures.
Children are welcome but the work is not censored, so
parental discretion is strongly advised.
The next Gathering dates will be:
Sunday, Sept 2 & Oct 7
Description and schedule:
3:30 to 4:00: bring artwork and check in.
4:00: doors are locked (ring the doorbell after 4).
4:30-5:30: artists break off into groups of 9 artists to
present their work. (If enough under-age artists
bring work, they will be given a separate group and
leader.) Non-presenters can continue socializing or
join the group of their choice.
5:30 to 6:00: groups fnish up, reconvene, socialize and/
or help tidy up.
Artists can bring up to 3 pieces of artwork. All skill levels
show work for fun, feedback, mentoring and exposure.
In the UU tradition there will be a question of the day
(hereafter known as the Molly), which artists can answer
or ignore when showing their work.
Artists are encouraged to bring show fyers, books,
magazines, announcements, etc., to share. People who
bring Art and Food (or just food) get in free. Everyone else
is $5 per individual, couple or family.
New members: this is a great opportunity to meet other
members, show your work and see the work being created
in the San Diego area.
Everyone else: show us your work, whether youre getting
into the juried shows or not. We want to see what you are
doing and have the opportunity to talk with you.
SDAI is continually growing and evaluating programs
in order to provide the artist community with exceptional
programming and opportunities. Feedback is always
appreciated and, if you would like to do so, please email
Lesley Anderson at: eduprogramSDAI@gmail.com.
Co-Sponsored by:
and The San Diego County Community Enhancement Fund
The Paint-out is an SDAI-sponsored program to
support and promote the art of plein-air paint-
ing (painting outside on location). Participating
artists gather at designated San Diego locations to
paint in plein air and socialize. An informal critique
of a days paintings is performed with intent to pro-
vide a learning and supportive environment. SDAI
members and non-members, of all skill levels, are
welcome to participate.
Each year there will be a juried exhibition at the
Museum of the Living Artist. The show, as part of a
regional show, will feature paintings selected from
the Paint-out programs Paint-out events. Paintings
must have a paint-out coordinators initials on the
back to be eligible for the exhibition. The maximum
size un-framed painting is 11 x 14. A painting must
be framed and wired for hanging.

August on the frst Saturday of the month. In
