Financial Support for the San Diego Art Institute (OSP 2010) is provided in part by the City of San Diego Commission
for Arts and Culture, QUALCOMM Incorporated, and the Chris and Lorraine Wolfe Fund.
Dear Members,
Fifteen years ago I had the distinct pleasure of being intro-
duced to the San Diego Art Institute by women I now know to be
remarkable people, Sean Sullivan, Ruth Hoffman, Anabel Mintz
and Ginger Wallace.
Sean Sullivan by all appearances was a gentle woman with an
easy smile and a comfort that spoke of a condence of spirit.
And, as I came to know, she was an accomplished artist and one
of the rst of these women to point me in a direction that has had
my attention for a decade and a half.
With a direction in hand, my fate was to run into Ruth Hoffman,
who has all the makings of a Long Island native, with a direct-
ness I found comforting and an eye that sparkled passion and
honesty. I lunched with Ruth and her sister, laid out my thoughts
and asked for her involvement and support, both of which I
believe are still available even though, after 12 years of diligence,
she has taken some time for her family.
Anabel Mintz , although soft and laid back in her manner, had a
stay of steel running through her back. Along with her devoted
husband Ted, also a friend to SDAI, Anabel came forward to
step into a role that only she could ll, and with her came the
Friends of the Institute.
Somewhere after the reality of the situation I had agreed to
hit home, as well as the fact that the odds of success were
meager, did I have my rst encounter with Ginger Wallace.
Ginger was an enigma to me. She, like all the women I mentioned
above, had a devotion to this venture and a belief in my plan;
however, Ginger gave me two things that would be the soul of
this crusade. Ginger spoke of simple things and never waivered
in her belief in my promise to make SDAI fundable and trans-
ferable. My promise has more than once kept me focused and
stayed through the many trying times that were to come. With
Gingers inuence and her corralling Wig Fletcher, Pauline des
Grange, Pat Ford and our then Board President Sean Sullivan
to become the de facto Guardians, we fast-tracked a capital
campaign in three months to maintain SDAIs hold on the space
in Balboa Park. The rest, as they say, is history. Of course there
are many people to thank for where we are today, but I am blessed
to have had the opportunity to know these women and the honor
to call them my friends.

GINGER WALLACE
Ginger was a revered force in San Diego as a devoted philanthropist for the ne arts in this region
through nonprot organizations efforts. Her tireless advocacy for SDAI particularly, along with sup-
port from her husband Robert Wallace and their extended family, has changed the face of what SDAI
is today. Her gentle, unending smile, her warmth and her spirited will shall be missed. Following is the
notice published in the San Diego Union Tribune on December 12, 2010.
WALLACE, GENE GINGER ELLIS, as a blizzard blew into the Bear Lake valley, Ginger peacefully left
this life in the arms of her husband on November 23, 2010. Ginger was born on New Years Eve in 1924
establishing from birth the celebration of life. The setting was Ogden and the proud parents were Gene
B. and Wallace H. Ellis. Throughout her youth, summers in Fish Haven, Idaho, were lled with family,
friends, practical jokes, the pier, the Bear Lake monster and perhaps the occasional water ght. Time
added lemon ice cream, her ever present movie camera, sitting on the porch with Mom and spectacu-
larly themed and costumed Anniversary parties. She attended Ogden High, the University of Utah and
the Art Institute of Chicago where she received a BFA and MFA. She continued her graduate studies
at Northwestern University; Chicago Institute of Design; University of Chicago; Utah State University;
and studied jewelry with Los Castillos in Taxco, Mexico. While in Chicago she operated The 750 Studio
where many local and national artists exhibited. Exuding creative energy from the very beginning, art
was the center of her life. Painting both abstract and realist, portraiture, photography, ceramics, sculp-
ture, water colors, colored pencil, enamels, jewelry making and lm. Ginger exhibited locally, nationally
and internationally in juried shows. She loved all media. Robert Wallace won her heart and hand and
in 1957 they married and moved to San Diego. As time went on Ginger juggled three children and their
many friends with humor, style, soap candy and lots of color. Community service was an important part
of Gingers life. She founded the Klee Wyk Society in 1962 and was a dedicated board member of the
Museum of Man. She was a charter board member of the Committee of 100 dedicated to preserving
the Spanish Colonial architecture in Balboa Park. Passionate about the mission of the San Diego Art
Institute, Ginger was instrumental in establishing the Art Institute in its current home. The Ginger
Award given annually by SDAI was named for her, and honors outstanding community volunteers. In
2007 the Friends of Balboa Park honored Ginger and Robert with the Millennium Award for fty years
of dedicated service to the park. These along with many other non-prot organizations in San Diego,
Utah and Idaho beneted from her lifelong belief in giving back to her communities. She used her time
and talent to create everything from newsletters and invitations for a multitude of organizations, to
hosting totally classy garden tea parties and, the occasional play and movies for, and starring the
Wednesday Club members. A signature event each year was to receive her mile long star studded
Christmas card. Gingers humor and talent live on in her published books Extraordinary People Plus
Unique and Above Average Children and Birds I Have Known That Are Very Extinct and Never Existed
which was her swan song. Her famous Brownie recipe is left with her husband, Bob; children, Janet;
Matt; Sally (Scott Browning) and her grandchildren Eliza, James and Robert Browning and Jack Wallace.
Siblings Elizabeth (Ted) Schmidt; Hague (Sue) Ellis; assorted nieces, nephews and suspect cousins. Last
but not least her faithful companion Sam, her doted upon oversized long haired chihuahua. Preceded in
death by her parents and her brother Matthew B. Ellis. Graveside services were held at the Ogden, Utah
City Cemetery on Saturday, December 4th, at 10:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life to be held later. In
lieu of owers, please donate to a charity of your choice as long as it is one Ginger would approve of

Regional Exhibition January 21 February 27, 2011
Alexander Salazar, art critic, historian, collector and well-respected art dealer
in La Jolla for many years, opened Alexander Salazar Fine Art in 2010 in down-
town San Diego, at the corner of 7th and Broadway. The 2000-square-foot gal-
lery features the work of national and international emerging and mid-career
artists. Salazar and his gallery encourage the appreciation and understanding
of art and its vital role in our society through many exhibitions, artist lectures,
community sponsorships and charity events.
While an undergraduate at Colorado College, Salazar lived in London, where
he studied modern and contemporary art before moving to Florence, Italy, to
research masters like Bernini and Botticelli. Salazar has a masters degree in
theology and art from Harvard University and a masters in sociology and art
from Boston College.

I wrote this forward because all members of SDAI should know
that without these women I would not have been successful in
my role as Executive Director. I was honored to have Ginger Wal-
lace as a friend and I was literally struck dumb at her passing.
I must retract this last comment as I have already been corrected
by Gingers daughter Janet that the term passing is unaccept-
able to Gingers husband Robert and that they prefer kicked the
bucket. Well, what could I say, as I knew this was exactly what
Ginger would have liked? She had a mischievous, dry humor that
would bring nothing less than a smile from anyone that came in
contact with her. She had a presence that made one lean in to
hear her speak and with her tone and her eyes she converted one
to an advocate.
Ginger embodied a spirit of generosity, a sense of sharing, an
intelligence and wit that gave me pause and encouraged me to
seek the best for SDAI.
I am very happy that SDAI has been able to bring public
attention to the remarkable talent that Ginger continued to hone
throughout her life, with the exhibition of her work called Ginger
Wallace, Her Art, Wit and Relationships. The body, scope and
breadth of her work was astounding, along with her recent pub-
lication of the second of two books she wrote and illustrated.
She attended and graduated from the Chicago Institute of Art
in the late 40s and opened The 750 Gallery, showcasing local and
national artists. Ginger produced a surrealist lm during the
start of this movement and Paul Clay was a contemporary of
hers. She was accomplished in lm, photography, oil, drawing,
jewelry, sculpture and ceramics. She was part of art history and
no less than a renaissance woman.
Family was a central theme within Ginger and Bobs house-
hold and the annual migration to the lake was a mainstay of the
extended family.
I write this as my Directors letter because I was compelled to share
the essence of a person whose mark on me is evident and whose
history with SDAI ties in with our current expansion efforts.
SDAI four years ago acquired the San Diego Art Department in
North Park as the beginning of a school to offer the visual arts to
our community. The growth of SDAD is a focused effort to also
advocate for an in-fact artist community which we believe will
be North Park. It has always been our long-term goal to build a
nonprot school as part of our overall organization. This would
mean multiple-site development, which is why Balboa Park is the
Museum of the Living Artist and the North Parks facility is the
Art Department.
This past month we were nalists in an effort to acquire the
old Woolworth building on University Avenue in North Park.
Although we were not selected, we will continue our efforts to
purchase a new home for the Art Department. Ownership, as
opposed to renting, would give us more control over our nanc-
es and allow us to expand our offerings to the community. Our
integrated program North Park for the Arts has already been
working with Ray at Night and the community to mature our
advocacy efforts, including affordable live/work units and the
development of an arts master plan.

It is very important that our membership understand the magni-
tude of this effort and the fact that our strategic plan includes
a responsibility to help elevate San Diego to a world-class arts
destination.
As your long-time Executive Director I put forth to you that, with
the passing of such a notable person and friend as Ginger and
the early and long-term work by Sean, Anabel, Ruth, Chris and
Lorraine Wolfe, Renatta and Mario Spiazzi and many more, we
are seeing the shift of this responsibility to the next generation.
It is my hope that this letter will serve to ignite some ame for
those who CAN to step forward to take the place of all those
whose extraordinary talents and efforts have given us a path and
goal that is in fact attainable if we continue to work together.
We have begun the process for real change and a bright future
but it takes funding, advocacy and people. Already the Wallace
family has shifted the generations as our Board Chair is Gingers
niece. The example is set. BE involved.
Happy New Year to you all and my thanks to my staff and our
Board of Directors, our numerous volunteers and those working
artists that offer up the reason we do what we do.
Sincerely,
Timothy Field

4:00: doors are locked (ring the doorbell after 4).
4:30-5:30: artists break off into groups of 9 artists to

leader.) Non-presenters can continue socializing
or join the group of their choice.
5:30 to 6:00: groups nish up, reconvene, socialize
and/or help tidy up.
Artists can bring up to 3 pieces of artwork. All skill

of the day (hereafter known as the Molly), which
artists can answer or ignore when showing their
work.
Artists are encouraged to bring show yers, books,
magazines, announcements, etc., to share. People
who bring Art and Food (or just food) get in free.

SDAI:MOLA Reception - December 10, 2010
Reections in a Canine Mirror (12/18/10) Baudelaire Shepherd
Kirby Kendricks KAPOW!,
one of this months featured
solo exhibits, can be seen as an
homage to the anarchic energy
of street art. It is not a simple
imitation of such art; including
as it does elements of collage
and other painterly features,
but with its layered texture,
its weathered hues, its textual
exclamations, and its free, pop-
inspired representations, the
show does frame for us some of that arts anonymous,
communal and joyfully arbitrary nature. Ironically, this very
nature is in direct opposition to the usual characteristics
of museum-based art, which assumes either an individual
mastery of craft, or a unique ability to mine a particular
subconscious. But of course Kendricks art is not in fact
street art, it is not in fact anonymous, and it is in fact
displayed in a museum.
But how do such aggressive ironies affect, or how ought
they affect, the viewers experience of this art, the critics
aesthetic judgment, or the philosophers analysis of
the process of signication and representation? It is
fascinating, for this purpose, to compare Kendricks solo
show to her diptych, Santa Monica I & II, which is a part
of this months regular juried exhibit. Like the works in the
solo show, the diptych includes strong elements of the
street aesthetic. But in the diptych these elements are
conned to narrow, yet vivid, bands along the bottom; while
balanced above these bands are broad swaths of paint
the color of sea or of sky. In this deliberate juxtaposition
the artist is following a classic procedure: the works of a
cultural community are confronted with the works of nature
itself, with the individual artist subtly controlling the terms
of this confrontation. Interestingly, the closer the subject
of art comes to the work of an individual cultural agent,
the artists control or commentary typically becomes more
overt. An artist painting a tree can pretend the absence of
a point of view. An artist painting a city can express their
point of view in the sky that hovers above it. But an artist
painting a painting is usually obliged to boldly highlight
their own ironic consciousness.
But in painting an homage to street art, is one painting
a painting? Is one expected to invoke a point of view,
or should the artist simply disappear? Do the normal
standards of aesthetic balance still apply, or does anarchy
necessarily celebrate the end of design? And must the
individual tagger be celebrated, or erased? Finally, is the
viewer invited to participate in the cycle of defacement
and expression? It is not surprising that the defacement
of a mural by Shepard Fairey, part of the MCASDs recent
exhibition of street art, was greeted by a curious mixture of
anger and admiration. And I myself was not sure whether
adding my own swaths of Indian yellow to Kendricks solo
show would have been a compliment or an outrage.
