Silverwood is a synthesizer that mimics acoustic wind instruments. It contains
no oscillators or envelope generators. Instead, it creates sounds using
waveguide physical modeling synthesis, and is activated by a wind or breath
controller. It is monophonic.
Please note that without a wind or breath controller, Silverwood will make no
sound. If no such controller is available, a 'KB Test' button will let MIDI note-on
events trigger the model instead.
Five physical models are included: brass, saxophone, clarinet, flute, and
recorder. After a sound is created by a model, it passes through an equalizer
that mimics the bell of an acoustic instrument.
The snapshots include these acoustic instrument emulations:
Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba, Cornet, Flugelhorn, Euphonium
Saxophones: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone
Double Reeds: Oboe, English Horn, Bassoon
Clarinets: Clarinet, Bass Clarinet
Flutes: Piccolo, Flute, Bass Flute
Other Pipes: Pan Pipes, Irish Whistle, Shakuhachi
Other Reeds: Uilleann Pipes, Scots Pipes, Accordion, Harmonica
Each snapshot responds to MIDI breath pressure (on CC2) and pitchbend data.
Various other MIDI control sources are supported.
Snapshot names indicate the instruments natural range and the pitchbend
effects. For example, the snapshot Trumpet F#3-D6 +screech falloff indicates
that the instrument is a trumpet, that its natural range is from F#3 to D6, that
bending the pitch up adds screech, and that bending the pitch down adds falloff.
The sample mp3 demonstrates the oboe and bassoon emulations.
Many of the mouthpiece and bore designs are based on STK, created by Drs.
Perry Cook and Gary Scavone.
The graphic control elements were created by Vera Kinter, at
http://www.artvera-music.com, and were provided by Bernd Keil.
I wish to acknowledge these whose publications have assisted me in the
creation of this instrument:

Hmm, if the Air Source is set to Breath Control then it should be
responding to CC#2. Try raising the CC#2 values to something high, like
in the 96 to 127 range, because some of the snaps need some serious
pressure to start oscillating.

Hi Chet, none of your Silverwoods are responding to my midi inputs from
keyboard. I can get sounds if I write the midi notes in my sequence and
put it to play but when I press any key in my keyboard along with the BC
it does not work. It remains playing the last note from the sequencer. All
other instruments are working smoothly in my template, including
Serenade, but not Silverwood. Please help!

The demo above sounds wonderful but I only have the demo version of
reaktor and Silverwood doesn't seem to work with it? I have put CC #2
data into the track but no sound with Air source set to Brth Ctrlr. With
volume as the air source it makes a constant note even when the
transport is not moving. However when it does move this note does not
change. KB test produces no sound at all. Do I have to buy reaktor in
order to test this synth?

Chet, thanks for the ideas. That has the effect of narrowing the window in
which it drops an octave, but also narrows the dynamic range. This can
be compensated for with level and gain plugins (I'm using
Logic/Mainstage), but limits the playability. It falls down with input in the
30-40 range. If I remap/transform the input MIDI values to 40-127, then
the effect is almost gone, but again, a more limited dynamic range.
(Bigger than a real oboe, though.)

V3 now includes a model of a Hammond organ. The model includes percussion,
key click, chorus, harmonic foldback, and a set of drawbars that can morph from
one setting to another.
Gain knob to maximum. 2. Reduce the Output Level slider. 3. Increase
the amount of modulation from Air Pressure to the Output Level.

air pressure/CC2), below 25 percent, the note 'falls down' an octave. In
other words, a minimum air pressure is required to keep it overblown to
the first harmonic. I've tried manipulating Efficiency mod with air
pressure, but that hasn't had the results I'm after getting the right
note even in quiet passages and on a diminuendo. Otherwise it's a joy to
play, once I figured out the pitch bend like Terry did earlier this year.
Thanks.

Hey Chet, You've done some sonically gorgeous work here. Thanks for
sharing your effort. I'm just getting acquainted with my new EWI4000s.
It's so pleasing to find something geared for wind controllers.I'm still
trying to figure out how to link the vibrato sensor in the mouthpiece to
Silverwood's pitch bend (rather than LFO vibrato)while maintaining a
useable range with the actual pitch bend plates at the thumb rest area.
Thanks again for your fine work!

This is so amazing. I can't thank you enough for sharing your fine work!
2 years ago Randall Omel
Hi Chet, I just discovered Silverwood while searching for a Motif Sweet
Flute replacement. Needless to say, sonically your plugin is a big step
forward from what I'm used to, and I am just wrestling with how to
control it using my MIDI keyboard and CCs. If I understand Stuart's
suggestion correctly (#75), when not in KB Test mode, moving a CC
assigned to Breath 002 and pressing any MIDI key on my keyboard will
start a note playing, which can be changed by pressing a different key
but not gated off when pressing and releasing a key. I thought this was a
bug but now think I may have learned something about how breath
controllers work. :-) If so, then as a keyboard player I too would like the
gate feature that Stuart has requested, or perhaps a keyboard ADSR
envelope control for Air Pressure. In any case, thank you for your
exceptional plugin!
2 years ago Chet Singer
Thank you for your kind words, Stuart. I'm currently working on an
update for Silverwood, and am hoping to finish it this summer. I like your
suggestions and will add both high-or-low note priority and optional
note-on gating.

An astounding piece of work, congratulations. I stumbled upon this by a
random web search looking for physically modelled sax plugins for
Reaper. I've been playing with a Yamaha BC-1 for a few years now with a
Korg Z1 and a Yamaha MU100R, but you've managed to surpass both of
these implementations. The modulation available really make the
instruments feel alive, way beyond anything else I've tried. You really
should be selling this, Harm Visser and the guy who does "MilesTone"

appear to be selling their PM work, you should too, try talking to AAS
about a port to Tassman. Some minor suggestions, I have would be to
make it work with lowset note priority triggering instead of last note, it
makes trills easier (my MU100R does this), also I would like to be able to
gate the breath input using the keyboard, i.e. cut off breath input when
the no keys are pressed, this helps when you want sharp cut off at the
end of a note or phrase. Finally, many thanks for this excellent ensemble,
I totally love it.
2 years ago Chet Singer
Hello. If your hardware is sending volume (cc7) then select
"Volume(cc#7)" from the Air Source drop-down in the Air Pressure
section. Then any other modulation input that is set to "Air Pressure" will
automatically follow it. As for the flutes, the model's geometry supports
only three octaves. If you want to play a high melody, perhaps the
piccolo will do.

This Ens seems to be the one I was looking for. I have big problems to

First and foremost this is absolutely brilliant. Why is there no "11"
available in the voting ? 10 just won't do for this. Thanks. Second, in
reply to Chets response #71 I'm using the free Player that runs in demo
mode and it plays everything. I can also call the .ens files up from
wherever I put them. It even plays reasonably well from my QUERTY
keyboard. Third, Silverwood 3.2 has undoubtedly cemented my purchase
of Reaktor. All I have to do now is find somewhere that will take cash.
(Can't even do paypal now without a bank account !) And finally, thanks
isn't enough. Suffice it to say, I owe you one. And it's a BIG ONE !

flute model. If you choose a bigger bore, like Bass Flute or Contrabass

will probably sound too bright but you can adjust that at each octave.

Hey Chet, amazing synth! Finally a great physical modeling plug for my

Lots of controls to learn... i agree with Simon Stockhausen above: start
abusing the controls and you can get amazingly unheard-of sounds! The
snaps/presets are interesting. It's nice to hear a modeled wind/brass
instrument aside from my Yamaha VL70m. They're quite different. My
only complaint might be that the snaps require too much breath pressure
(i like light breath response), but i see that all things are configurable.

Silverwood actually began life as a collection of mix-and-match
mouthpieces and pipes. But each combination needed a separate tuning
table, and that required too much time and effort to build. So I eventually
stripped it down to five fixed models.

I hate to be the ignorant one in the bunch of you but if it needs a breath

6 years ago Chet Singer
Michael, to get some immediate sound out of the instrument, choose a
snapshot and change the "Air Source" to the mod wheel. Then use the
mod wheel to inject air into the model. It won't be very expressive, but it
will create sound.

This is a wonderful instrument, and may end up tempting me to invest a

assigning an expression pedal to CC #2.) My one wish list item would be
that it were not so CPU intensive -- I have to set my latency unusually
high with it.

does PM very well. I think this should turn into a commercial product. I
get around the breath controller by using my knob box on CC2 , although

Hello Michael, I received your error report. I hope the discussion on this
page explains why you weren't getting sound out of the instrument.
6 years ago Chet Singer
CC2, yes, (CC1, CC7, or CC11 can also be selected) because it's the
amount of air pressure entering the model. The pitch wheel is optional,
and is used by the snaps to bring in various effects, like screeches,
falloffs, or growls.
6 years ago ZooTooK .
Fantastic! I've found loads of classical horn music midi files, see link

to get some results. http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Choir

Thanks for the encouragement, Jonathan. But NI's rating system is a

I'm just curious as to who at NI was smoking illicit substances when they
rated this. If this ensemble, which could easily sell for $100 or more but
is here being distributed free of charge, merits only a "3.42" then, one
wonders, what would a "10" be? An ensemble that negotiates hostage
releases? NI, you absolutely must give this at the *very* least a 4.5, for
the sake of consistency alone. Not a big deal, but the current rating is
simply nonsensical.

Smiles and more (s)miles, this is incredible! Arturia can take a hike haha.
I first tried the mod wheel and expression ctrl as air source since I do not
have a wind controller either, but I found a gate with a AD env better, as
you mention because of the faster attack. And then I am modulating the
AD instead. Aftertouch is also working wonderfully here. You deserve a
distinguished builder award ;-)

Thanks for the info, Don. I have one of the MIDI Solutions breath
interface boxes. I also have an out-of-production Kurzweil
ExpressionMate which contains a breath interface. They both work great.
The Kurz might be a little more responsive to fast tonguing. I've also
learned that the CME keyboard controllers all have breath control inputs
built right in, but I've never tried one myself.

The VL70-m is the little half-rack version of the VL7 virtual modeling
keyboard, no longer made. The VL70m was intended for use with a WX
controller, mainly good for wind players. It sounds awesome. This
ensemble sounds every bit as good, as far as I can tell without using a
breath controller. I did find this and it might be worth a couple hundred
buck to use with this ensemble (it's that good!) but you can by third
party sounds that are made for it, too. http://www.midisolutions.com

Chet, thanks for your help. Since I don't have a breath controller, I set up
my MIDI Controller keyboard with CC2 assigned to one of the sliders. And
it works even better to change the "Air Source" setting in Silverwood to
"Mod Whl (cc#1)". I should have figured this out myself! Once again, it
sounds beautiful and thanks.
6 years ago Chet Singer
Don, I'm unfamiliar with a VL70m, but if it can route the BC input data
it's receiving to a MIDI output stream, then yes, it could be used as a
breath-to-MIDI converter. That would be cool.
6 years ago Chet Singer
Chris, in addition to what Jim said, you can also get sound out of it
immediately by setting the air source to the first setting (Mod Wheel).
You'll be able to hear the effects attached to increasing air pressure, such
as the brilliance of the brass instruments. It won't have the speed of
tonguing a breath controller, of course.

Chet, I'm wondering if I can use the BC connected to my VL70m and
send "passive" midi data to your ensemble. That is , bypasssing the
sounds in the VL but still sending BC data?
6 years ago Chet Singer
Tim, recorded MIDI signals produced by a wind controller musician would
be adequate to drive the model. It would be best if the musician were
actually playing the ensemble at the time, so they can get a feel for the
behavior of the particular model they're playing. The only signals I used
when creating the MP3 were note-on (to set the pitch), CC2 to provide
the air pressure, and pitchbend to add some vibrato. I used a keyboard
and a BC3A breath controller.
6 years ago Tim Tesar
The .MP3 sounds beautiful! Does anyone know where I can get MIDI files
that will play this instrument? Presumably a MIDI Wind Controller player
can record the MIDI output of his instrument as a .mid file that I could
then play into Silverwood. Alternatively, a description of all the MIDI
inputs used by Silverwood would allow me to create my own .mid file
using a sequencer (Sonar, for example). I can see all the MIDI inputs in
the instrument structure, but it would be a little easier if someone
familiar with MIDI Wind Instruments would provide the details. Thanks!
