How do you record a sound (eg. Voice) without the 'white-noise' in the background?

Whenever I write a song, I record it vocally to help memorise the tune. How do I record a
sound without the *shhhhhhhh* type noise in the background?
This is usually caused by a cheap quality microphone. Get a better mic. "usb mics" are
usually best quality on a low budget because they go directly to your computer rather than
through your sound card. If you get a standard mic, you might want to buy a better sound
card. One other thing you could try is using the free program Audacity to remove
background noise.

How to get rid of the background noise when recording with a microphone?
I sometimes like to try to record songs into my iMac using Garageband. I have a working
microphone and stuff, but the result is I can always hear a background noise...is there
anyway of getting rid of it?
I assume you are talking about the hollow "room" sound. Noise gates on compressors are
useful, but unless they are adjusted perfectly, they will cause irritating artifacts. The best
solution is acoustic treatment. Absorptive material such as cloth and heavy blankets hung in
front of large flat surfaces (like walls) can help a lot. Leave a few inches of space between
the wall and blanket. Think padded moving blankets. You can buy them at U-Haul. For
vocals, using a more directional cardioid microphone will reduce background noise. Close
miking of instruments and vocals will also reduce noise. Use equalization on your input
channel. There isn't much in formation below 150 hz in the human voice. Cutting the low
frequencies will also cut noise. Compressed fiberglass panels are the best sound
absorbers. Check with larger builders suppliers. Owens Corning 700 series panels are the
best and less expensive than "sound panels" which are often nothing more than the same
panels with a cloth covering.

How can I eliminate background noise when using a microphone on Windows 8?
So I could not found out how to eliminate background noise when I chat with my friends. I
know that in Windows 7, you could go to sound in control panel and then go
to enhancements and check a glorious little box, however enhancements is not there in
Windows 8. If anyone has an answer that would be great, I haven't been able to figure this
out. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks
Upgrade the audio driver and see if it helps. This issue can be caused by several reasons.
Such as the communication application, the network speed, the audio device, etc.

1. I would recommend better microsophone or handset.
2. Second phenomenon that may influence noise is impedance mismatch. There is better
alternative with bulit in amplifier and USB interface.
3. For transfer of voice there may be smaller frequency bandwidth (270Hz-2700Hz) is
enough for voice resolution.
4. In microphone properties there are similar settings as in previous operating systm.
Lower the microphone boost.

First off, I would like to thank you for answering.
For #3 how can I change my bandwidth if possible?
Also, I did have microphone boost on, but only because my voice coming out the other end
was not so loud. I was poking around in the settings like you mentioned in #4 when I noticed
in the "Advanced" menu under "Default Format" I can change the bit depth and sample so
its says. Could this menu help me? I can change it from Channel 2-16 bit-44100 Hz (CD
Quality) to Channel 2-24 Bit-192000 Hz (Studio Quality) and anything in between.
Upgrade the audio driver and see if it helps.
