SCENE 1:
Setting: in the living room of a group members house
Props: books, laptop, manila paper

Isaac and Alyssa enter the room, their arms loaded with books. Myla is sleeping on the floor,
notebooks scattered around her. June is beside her, legs crossed and reading a book. Tre and
Shaira are busy writing on a manila paper while Ryan pushes up his glasses as he surveys the
mess.

RYAN: (looks everywhere and sighs) Seriously?

ALYSSA: (drops the books at the floor, jolting Myla awake)

MYLA: (rubs her head and groans)

ALYSSA (CONTD): Dont be such a party pooper, Ryan.

ISAAC: (places the books beside Alyssas pile and sits down beside Myla) Yeah. We have until two
days to understand this stuff. Not everybody is a Calculus genius, you know

RYAN: (goes to Tre and Shaira while pointing at them) Fine but you guys have to listen when we
talk. I have far more important things to do than this. I could be studying for Filipino.

SHAIRA: (claps her hands to get everyones attention) Okay, okay! Were done. Lets start!

Everybody looks at the sheets of Manila paper plastered on the wall. Alyssa lets out a loud sigh,
Isaac rubs his temples, June slams his head on a book while Myla stands up.

MYLA: This is annoying. Im going to go get some food.

TRE: Wai- okay, she left. Guess somebody doesnt want to pass the Mastery Test.

SHAIRA: Ignore her, lets start. So, what are you guys confused about?

TRE: (looks up at the Manila paper) Limits and existence? Okay, okay. First of all, lets start with
defining this topic.
Everybody grabs a pen with paper and start writing down notes

RYAN: (points to the written equation of limit) So, as taught to us, we can say that the limit of the
function of x as x approaches a is L.

ALYSSA: In English, please.

SHAIRA: L is the closest value of the function when x approaches a. Get it?
ALYSSA: (nods)

RYAN: Thats not really the definition of limit, though. Thats only a working definition, something
for us to wrap our heads around it. Its working, since you guys get it. So, anyway, to know the limit
of x when it approaches a, we should look both sides.

RYAN: (camera pans to an example) Well, you can know what side to look for because of their
signs. If a has a positive sign as an exponent, you will look from the right and stopping to the
value of a. This is called the right-hand limit, because it came from the right.

TRE: (demonstrates, writing on the manila paper)

RYAN(CONTD): If a has a negative sign as an exponent, it means that you will have to look from
the left side of the graph and stopping at the value of a. This is called the left-hand limit, because
instead of coming from the right, it came from the left.

TRE: (demonstrates again, this time from the left side)

ISAAC: (raises his hand) What if theres no positive or negative sign?

RYAN: That means you have to look on both sides. You have to look from the left side and then,
the right. This limit is called two-sided limit.


Myla enters the room, hands full of food and drinks. She walks to their spot and lifts her head.

MYLA: (places the stuff on a table and sits beside June) I just went away for a while and this
happens. What the hell.

RYAN: (looks at Myla, his eyes annoyed) So as I was saying, you have to look from the left side
and the right side.

ALYSSA: Any examples? Like graph form.

RYAN: (gets a marker and writes an example) So as you can see, our a is 6, with a negative sign
as an exponent. This means that we have to look for the limit of 6 from the left side. We look at the
left, then trace it back until we stop at 6.

RYAN (CONTD): (he drags his marker to trace an imaginary line, stops at six) As you can see,
there is a closed circle above 6, with the line extending to negative infinity. The value of that closed
circle is 5 so that means the limit of the function when x is approaching from the left side of 6 is 5.
That is how we get the left hand function.

YSSA: (mumbles) Right-hand limit

SHAIRA: What about it?

YSSA: I dont get it.

SHAIRA :Okay, so a right hand limit is defined as a value such that . By
the uniqueness theorem for limits (one-sided version), there is at most one value of for
which . Hence, it makes sense to talk of the right hand limit when it exists.

ISAAC: (scribbling in his notebook) Can you give us an example?

SHAIRA: (worried) Example, uh- wait, Ill explain something first.

ISAAC: (nods) Okay, go.

SHAIRA: (rubs her chin in thought) How do I begin to explain this?

TRE: I think I can explain this.

SHAIRA: (hands him the marker) Yay! Okay go, explain it to them.

TRE: Suppose that f is a function of one variable and L is an element of real numbers is a point
such that f is defined at the right of L.

SHAIRA: In other words, there exists some value that t is greater than zero such that f is defined
on .

SHAIRA (CONTD): And, for a given value of a real number, we say that: (writes)
ISAAC: Okay, I kinda get it now! Thank you!
ALYSSA: (holds her nose) I think my nose is bleeding.
ISAAC: (looks at her) No, its not.
ALYSSA: (slaps his arm) That was a joke. Sheesh.
MYLA: (chewing) I dont get about two-sided limits though! Can you guys explain it for me?
TRE: Two-sided limits exist under three conditions. One, if the left-hand limit ex-
MYLA: Exist? What do you mean exist?
RYAN: (rolls his eyes) Werent you listening?
TRE: (holds a hand) Its okay, I got that. Exist meaning it has a value. Like a real number value.
MYLA: (sticks his tongue out at Ryan) You just got owned, sucker. Thanks, Tre.
TRE: (smiling) As I was saying, the first condition for a two-sided limit to exist is one, the left-hand
limit must exist. Two, the right-hand limit must exist. Exist meaning it has a value.
MYLA: What about the third one?
TRE: The third condition is the left-hand limit and the right-hand limit must exist. When all three
conditions are met, the two-sided limit exists!
MYLA: Ohh, thats how it is. Everything is so clear!
ISAAC: (raises his hand again) What if the limit does not exist? How would you know?
SHAIRA: In what form?
ISAAC: (rolls his eyes) Graph form, of course. Thats our only topic as of now.
SHAIRA: Dont need to be so snarky about it. In graph form, you will know when the limit does not
exist when a point does not extend in a line. Like here. (camera pans to example)
SHAIRA (CONTD): Here is a piecewise graph. We are looking for left-hand limit, right-hand limit
and the two-sided limit of L as x approaches two. Lets find the right-hand limit first. (draws an
imaginary line, stops at 6). The right-hand limit is six. Anyone can answer what is the left hand
limit?
MYLA: (raises hand up) Four?
SHAIRA: (shakes her hand) No.
MYLA: But theres a closed circle there!
SHAIRA: Yes, there is a closed circle but it is just a point. As you can see, it is not extending to the
right. Meaning, it did not came from the right.
MYLA: So its DNE? Does not exist?
SHAIRA: Yes, yes it is. The right-hand limit as x approaches two does not exist. If the left-hand
limit is six, and the right-hand hand limit does not exist, what does it make our two-sided limit?
MYLA: Does not exist?
SHAIRA: (grins) Correct! Can you tell me why?
MYLA: Because of the third condition when it comes to two-sided limit existence. In order for a two-
sided limit to exist, the left-hand limit and the right-hand limit should be equal to each other. In this
example, the left-hand limit does exist but the right-hand does not, making the two-sided limit non-
existent!
SHAIRA: Nice explanation, Myla! So, does anybody have more questions? Do you all get it
already?
Alyssa, Isaac, June and Myla nod in agreement.
TRE: Lets wrap this up and discuss another topic. As a teaser for the knowledge part of our test,
what is a limit?
MYLA: (looks at her notebook) A limit is the intended height of a function at a given value of x.
TRE: How do you know the existence of a limit?
MYLA: Uhh, you look at the graph?
TRE: (laughs) Yes, you do but how do you analyze the graph?
MYLA: Oh, okay. For the left-hand limit, you approach from the left side and if the point has a line
extending to the left, then that value is the value of L, making the left-hand limit existent. Same
goes for the right-hand limit, only it comes from the right.
TRE: You missed something.
ALYSSA: Me! Me!
TRE: Yes, Alyssa?
ALYSSA: The two-sided limit!
TRE: What about it?
ALYSSA: The two-sided limit only exists when the right-hand limit and the left-hand limit exist and
are equal to each other!
TRE: Thats right! (thumbs up)
RYAN: (closes notebook and smiles) Okay, whos up for Filipino?

Everybody groans.
