Evan McIntire flashes the thumbs up to his fellow graduates during Indian Mills Memorial Schools graduation ceremony held at
Seneca High School on June 26. Superintendent Christine Vespe wished the graduates luck and urged them to get involved in groups
and activities once their high school careers begin. The auditorium was packed with family and friends who witnessed their favorite
graduate receive their diploma.

Andrew Rider owned a large
cranberry farm in the Pinelands
in the early 20th century.
It was known in the communi-
ty that he paid his workers in
cash after seven weeks of work in
the bogs.
In 1916, about a quarter-mile
away from Atsion Village, he was
readying to disburse the funds he
had withdrawn from a bank in
Hammonton when a band of
eight men, a few of whom were
dressed as women, jumped out of
the woods wielding guns.
The group of men started
shooting, said tour guide Joyce
Lamb. Everybody in the car was
shot.

Beat the heat with a good read
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
With temperatures rising,
there is no better way to spend a
beach day or even a day lounging
in air conditioning than im-
mersed in a good read.
The Pinelands Library, located
in Medford, also serves the neigh-
boring towns of Shamong, Taber-
nacle, Southampton and Wood-
land.
The number of kids taking out
books from the library has been
growing each summer.
The library offers an incentive
program based on time spent
reading or the number of books
read depending on the readers
age.
After four hours, the kids in
the program receive prizes, ac-
cording to youth services librari-
an Danielle Haubrich.
Last year was a record-break-
ing summer for the library,
Haubrich said.
Books that have, or are going to
be, turned into movies grabbed
the attention of young adult and
children readers.
The Hunger Games books
are really popular, Haubrich
said.
Divergent was turned into a
movie, and kids are reading the
first two books in that series.
Haubrich suggests both books
for readers who want to be
hooked into a good series.
The Percy Jackson series has
always been popular, according to
Haubrich. The books have been
turned into a movie recently as
well.
Kids just love series they can
sink their teeth in. When they
find something they like, they
want to read a ton more,
Haubrich said.
The parents like it, too. It
keeps them reading.
In addition to childrens inter-
est in the library and the reading
program, adults have been spend-
ing time in the library, rounding
out their own lists.
According to reference librari-
an Adam Crockett, books-to-
screen series have been incredi-
bly popular.
Song of Ice and Fire by
George RR Martin, and the inspi-
ration for the HBO series Game
of Thrones, has a long waiting
list.
We cannot keep that book on
the shelf, its so popular, Crock-
ett said.
The library also carries comics
and graphic novels including
The Walking Dead, and DC
Comics.
Crockett also recommends
some nonfiction books including
The Feud: The Hatfields and Mc-
Coys: The True Story by Dean
King. The Hatfields and McCoys
have been the inspiration for a
History Channel miniseries, pro-
viding the book-to-screen experi-
ence with a nonfiction back-
ground.
The book itself was good. It
goes back to about 10 to 15 years
before the Civil War started,
when the feud began, Crockett
said.
The summer also brings pa-
trons interested in travel and
planning trips.
Were always pointing people
to our travel section, Haubrich
said.
The library offers an entire sec-
tion dedicated to New Jersey and
the surrounding area if anything
more than a day trip is too much
a few weeks before school.
The New Jersey section is
filled with books of hiking guides
and other natural locations, in ad-
dition to historical nonfiction on
the state.
There are books with attrac-
tions about an hour outside of
Philadelphia if you dont want to
plan on going too far away,
Haubrich said.
Whether youre traveling to the
beach or headed to your back-
yard, guests have the ability to
borrow books on their E-readers.
This summer, so many more
people have been coming in for
their Kindle or their iPad,
Haubrich said.
For more information on how
to borrow digitally, events at the
library and more information,

shot in the neck and ultimately
bled to death.
The car then was able to flee
from the crime scene and reach
safety.
The would-be robbers had ar-
rived in town in a vehicle with an
out-of-state license plate, which
was unusual for the time period.
A member of the community
luckily penned the plate number
due to the oddity of the car being
there, which eventually led to all
suspects being caught by authori-
ties.
When the state acquired Whar-
ton Tract in 1954 off present-day
Route 206 in Shamong Township,
there was graffiti throughout At-
sion Mansion in Atsion Village.
One drawing remains: a car
that appears to be racing away
from a scene.
The graffiti is dated 1923, just
years after the sensational mur-
der shook the community.
For some reason, when the
state did the restoration, they
thought it was interesting and
they decided to leave it, said
Lamb, who gives tours as a volun-
teer.
The state restored the outside
of the mansion shortly after pur-
chasing the tract for $3 million,
but the inside remained shut for
more than 50 years. Decades of
neglect let the mansion and
grounds fall into disrepair.
They did eventually do the
restoration, Lamb said. There
was tremendous damage inside of
the house.
Finally a $1.2 million renova-
tion project was passed for the
historic property. A restoration of
the mansions interior was com-
pleted in 2007 only to later be un-
done by a roof collapse in 2010
due to heavy snow.
With the restoration complete,
the mansion and village opened
for free tours in the summer of
2012. Tours of the grounds can be
taken on Saturdays at 1 p.m. and 2

I
f you have a child in public school,
chances are that you are well-in-
formed as to what the Partnership
for Assessment of Readiness for Col-
lege and Careers, or PARCC, is.
As a quick refresher, its a new on-
line platform that students in grades
four through eight will take instead of
their former state standardized tests.
PARCC aligns with the new Common
Core State Standards, which has more
rigorous benchmarks for student
learning.
No longer will students take the tra-
ditional tests we grew up with a
Scantron form that we used a No. 2
pencil to complete. Instead, students
will take math and language arts tests
completely online.
PARCC testing begins in the fall at
public schools throughout New Jersey,
apparently whether local school dis-
tricts are technologically ready for it
or not. Some of the districts we cover
in both Princeton and South Jersey
have expressed concern about their
readiness for administering the tests.
Thats a problem. But, as these same
districts have said, they dont have a
choice. The PARCC testing is signed
into state law, and there is no turning
back at this point.
One of the more concerning aspects
of PARCC, though, isnt how its ad-
ministered or the content of the tests
themselves; its the fact that the re-
sults of the tests will be given major
weight in the judgment of teachers
and administrators.
The formula in place says student
progress on state testing will make up
30 percent of an evaluation for teach-
ers in grades four through eight.
While we arent against using test re-
sults to judge teachers, at least in part,
we dont believe that now is the time to
dive head-first into holding them ac-
countable for testing for which their
district might not be prepared.
The state Assembly passed a bill last
week that would delay this judgment
on teachers until the kinks are ironed
out. The state Senate delayed a vote,
opting instead to wait for direction
from Gov. Christie, whos expected to
issue an executive order reducing the
weight of the test results in teacher
evaluations in the short term.
We back this thinking 100 percent.
Having some objective measurers
such as test results to evaluate teach-
ers is valuable.
In the past, all anyone had to go on
was subjective matters. But giving
such heavy weight to test results when
there are so many issues surrounding
the administration of that test is un-
fair.
Its the states job to ensure its
school districts are up to speed on
PARCC before it starts using it against
our teachers.
Delay the judgment of teachers
PARCC testing needs to be ironed out first, before we hold our teachers to results

Fourth grader wins poster contest
Last May, as part of a Burlington County Health
Starts Here initiative, the county health depart-
ment sponsored an Asthma Awareness Month
poster contest. Entries were limited to students in
Burlington County schools from third through
eighth grade. Students were encouraged to high-
light ways to control asthma, avoidance measures
and understanding how to cope and still be a kid.
Jennifer Simpson, school nurse for Indian Mills
School in Shamong, saw this as a way to get her
asthmatic students to raise their voices concerning
this affliction and show others that it is not going to
slow them down. More than 200 posters were re-
ceived by the health department, and Meredith
Waropay, a fourth grader in Mrs. Babbitts class,
won the award in the third through fifth grade cate-
gory.
On June 11, at the county meeting of the Board of
Freeholders, Meredith was given her award by the
Health Department. Asked for her reaction to
Merediths award, Simpson stated, It is awe-inspir-
ing to see kids, not only have an understanding
about any medical condition they may have, but get
involved with their own healthcare and find ways to
overcome it. Merediths initiative is truly a victory
for her fellow asthmatics. She is a role model for her
peers. Quite frankly, it humbles me just to be
around her and the students in this school.
Special to The Sun
Meredith Waropay displays her winning poster with
John Sivon, director of health education for
Burlington County.

The tour experience is vastly
different than a visit to nearby
Batsto Village in Hammonton.
We work very closely with
Batsto. This is a different kind of
experience, Lamb said.
Batsto Mansion is furnished
beautifully, she said, whereas At-
sion Mansion is more of an archi-
tectural tour. Today, the mansion
appears as it did back in 1826. As
such, it does not contain plumb-
ing, electricity or heat.
For visitors who want to view
the other remaining structures in
the village area, maps are avail-
able.
The Atsion Park Office, where
reservations for large groups can
be made, is in the old village
store.
Atsion Village historically was
a company town, no matter for
what industry the occupants were
working. The town consisted of
the mansion, several dwellings
for workers, the company store,
church, sawmill, gristmill and
blacksmith shop.
The mansion was built in the
Greek Revival style and was said
to resemble the store.
Even on one of the hottest days
of the year, the air in the mansion
was cool.
The house has a north-south
exposure, Lamb said. That was
done purposely to allow for maxi-
mum sunlight as well as ventila-
tion.
A color analysis was also done.
Today, the colors on the walls
match the ones the inhabitants of
times past used to see.
The tour winds through the
house, stopping in each room
other than the servants rooms on
the third floor, while guides tell
many known details about its ex-
tensive history.
Atsion is located at 744 Route
206. Reservations are required for
large groups and can be made by
calling the Atsion Forest Office at
(609) 268-0444.
