Expert: Marcial Labininay, OIC Reg X

Q2: How many years you’ve been in the service?

Expert: 12 years

Q3: What are qualifications needed to become a seismologist?

Expert: you must be a geologist, engineering graduate

Q4: How often earthquake do happens?

Expert: Everyday, in fact there were 20 recorded earthquakes in the Philippines


daily and 100-150 felt earthquakes per year.

Q5: Based on your studies, is there any cases that lasts for a day?

Expert: None so far, usually it will last for about a minutes or seconds

Q6: What is the maximum time ever recorded of the longest earthquake?

Expert: In terms of shaking, the maximum time recorded was 48 seconds but in
terms of wave duration only a minute.

Q7: How many active faults do we have here in the Philippines? Where is
the most active?

Expert: In the Phil. We have approximately 49 faults including the trenches. The
most active is the Phil. Trench.

Q8: Do we have epicenter here in our country? Where?

Expert: Yes, especially in the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Surigao

Q9: How does your agency monitor with regards of the instruments that
are available here?

Expert: It depends on how deep/shallow is the focus, if its too shallow then we
can monitor even in Japan and China.

Q10: When and where was the first recorded earthquake that happened
here in the Philippines? How about here in Mindanao?

Expert: March 1984

Q11: How many recorded Earthquakes do you have from the time of your
operation?

Expert: 12 destructive earthquakes so far

Q12: What do you think will happen if there is no movement of plates? Are
there any possibilities that there will be no earthquake at all?

Expert: It’s impossible of course but if in case there will still an earthquake and
that is what we called man-made quakes.
