Honorable Lynette Gibson-McElhaney, Councilmember District 3
Dear Leaders,
A broad-based coalition that includes businesses big and small, non-profits, soc
ial service
providers, the hospitality and hotel associations, restaurants, and more, reques
ts that you support
our effort to pass a Sustainable Minimum Wage that we call 13 in 3. It raises the
wage to
$11.00 in 2015, $12.00 in 2016, and $13.00 in 2017.
Our Sustainable Minimum Wage is patterned after approaches used in Richmond, Ber
keley, and
San Francisco that gradually increase the wage. We believe this is a responsible
way to increase
the Minimum Wage. It is sustainable. It mitigates adverse impacts because it al
lows small
business and nonprofits to absorb wage increases. As an Ordinance passed by thro
ugh Council
action, we could also exempt social service providers, work force trainers, non-
profits, and
others, as appropriate, and make adjustments if there are unintended consequence
s.
Our approach, which is attached, actually raises the rate to a higher level tha
n Lift Up has asked
for. It has the additional benefit of giving impacted businesses and others the
ability to absorb an
increase rather than get hit with a sudden, unplanned, major minimum wage increa
se.
We are asking Councilmember Lynette Gibson-McElhaney to introduce our Sustainabl
e
Minimum Wage as priority legislation and we urge you to join us to show broad-ba
sed support
for this responsible approach to increasing the minimum wage.
We hope that the Lift Up Coalition will see this as a significant win for low wa
ge earners. We
believe that your assistance can help make that happen. Our Coalition would be
happy to meet
with all parties to reach a constructive compromise that averts a huge and unnec
essary political
fight.
Since we all agree that the Minimum Wage should increase, why are we fighting?
Thank you for your help!
