1.0 PURPOSE This document establishes minimum quality requirements for the cosmetic inspection of printing and labeling on material/parts. 2.0 SCOPE This procedure includes all material used in Telect manufactured products that have a coated finished, i.e., painted, powder coat, silkscreen, pad print, laser etch, chemical film/anodized, plating, etc.
This includes, but is not limited to a. all material received from outside sources b. any material assembled, reworked, manufactured touched-up, etc., within Telect

CLASS S1, 1, 2 All lettering and symbols need to be easily recognizable.
5.3 Smearing, Smudged Where ink is drawn away from its original location
CLASS S1, 1 Cannot affect the legibility One instance per square inch of silkscreen at size of .01 x .02
CLASS 2 Cannot affect the legibility Two instances per square inch of silkscreen, at size of .02 x .03

CLASS S1 None visible at viewing distance. Defects under 0.010-inch [0.25mm] diameter are considered not visible. CLASS 1 None visible at viewing distance. Defects under 0.010-inch [0.25mm] diameter are considered not visible. A break in ink lettering is permissible in applications where sheet metal hardware (e.g., PEM stud heads) creates a natural void on a printed sheet metal part as long as the artwork is legible.
CLASS 2 None visible at viewing distance. Defects under 0.010-inch [0.25mm] diameter are considered not visible. A break in ink lettering is permissible in applications where sheet metal hardware (e.g., PEM stud heads) creates a natural void on a printed sheet metal part as long as the artwork is legible.
5.6 Fading Where ink lightens over an area
ALL CLASSES Uniform and legible
5.7 Uniform Where the ink is same thickness over the whole area
CLASS S1 Ink is the same thickness in all directions
Workmanship Standard

ALL CLASSES None permitted
5.9 Discolorization Defined by TWS-903
5.10 Bleeding Where there is too much ink applied
CLASS S1, 1 Letters or symbols are not to be filled in.
CLASS 2 No more than 20% of silkscreen fill in of letters and symbols

6.0 PROCEDURE 6.1 Classes of Printing and Labeling Unless otherwise specified by the drawing, classes are defined as follows: Class S1 Specific to a customer.
Workmanship Standard
Document number: TWS-905 Document name: Visual Inspection of Printing and Labeling Revision: A3 Approval Date: 4/15/04
Page 7 of 10
Class I Surface most often viewed and top.
Class II Surface such as side (seen but not as often) back or bottom side.
Class III Surface inside not viewed by customer (not inspected for cosmetics unless specified on the drawing)
6.2 Inspection Conditions (Unless otherwise noted on Telect specifications)
Lighting: Daylight or cool white fluorescent lighting of approximately 80- to 100- foot candles. Lighting should be diffused so shadows are not a factor.
Viewing Distance: 18 to 22 inches.
Viewing Angle: Inspection should be perpendicular to the inspection surface.
Viewing Plane: Parts shall not be manipulated to reflect a single light source in order to accentuate surface flaws. View without reflecting a single light source.
Inspector Qualifications: Inspection must be made by the inspector with 20/20 vision or vision corrected to 20/20.
Dwell Time: 8 to 10 seconds. Inspection Aids: No magnifying devices are permitted for visual inspection (other than normal corrective lenses). Magnifying devices are permitted for determining the size of defects.
Repetitive Inspection: A flaw that occurs repeatedly in the same surface location becomes more easily noticed. If this same cosmetic flaw was judged acceptable at the beginning of the lot inspection, it shall be acceptable at the end.
