Designing Wastewater Systems
According to Local Conditions
Enhancing the chance of success
Author: David M Robbins
This is a practical handbook providing a step-
by-step approach to the techniques used for
characterizing wastewater sources and
investigating sites where collection, treatment
and reuse/disposal technologies will be
installed. It is intended to help enable local
implementation of on-site and decentralized
wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS)
for wide scale use in development settings.
Designing Wastewater Systems According to
Local Conditions helps local service providers and regulatory officials
make informed decisions through the use of tools, checklists and case
studies. It will include a link to a web based community of on-site and
decentralized wastewater professionals, which contains related tools
and case studies. This handbook will serve as a reference for training
classes, certification programs, and higher education programs in civil
and sanitary engineering.
There is an increasing interest on the part of local government
officials and private sector service providers to implement wastewater
treatment systems to solve sanitation problems. The model presented
in this handbook promotes activities that first generate data related
to source and site conditions that represent critical inputs, and then
applying this information to the technology selection process. Matching
the most appropriate technologies to the specific needs of the
wastewater project is the key that leads to long term sustainability.
Designing Wastewater Systems According to Local Conditions is an
invaluable resource for public sector decision makers and private
sector service providers in developing countries. It is also a useful text
for students at engineering colleges in developing countries interested
in taking a class that teaches the methods of DEWATS development.
Contents:
Introduction to on-site and decentralized wastewater treatment and
typical components of DEWATS systems. Discusses pre-treatment,
primary treatment, secondary treatment, disinfection, reuse and
recycling.
The DEWATS decision model critical inputs (source and site) and

Meeting the Challenge of
Financing Water and Sanitation
Tools and Approaches
Author: Organisation for Economic Co-Operation
and Development (OECD)
The investments needed to deliver
sustainable water and sanitation services,
including the funds that are needed to
operate and maintain the infrastructure,
expand their coverage and upgrade service
delivery to meet current social and
environmental expectations, are huge. Yet,
most systems are underfunded with dire
consequences for water and sanitation users,
especially the poorest. Providing sustainable
drinking water supply and sanitation services
requires sound financial basis and strategic financial planning to ensure
that existing and future financial resources are commensurate with
investment needs as well as the costs of operating and maintaining
services. Some of the key messages of this report are:
WSS generate substantial benefits for the economy
Investment needs to generate these benefits are large in both
OECD and developing countries
Tariffs are a preferred funding source, but public budgets and ODA
will have a role to play, too
Markets-based repayable finance is needed to cover high up-front
capital investment costs
Strategic financial planning and other OECD tools can help
Governments move forward

Water Governance in OECD Countries: A
Multilevel Approach addresses multilevel
governance challenges in water policy
implementation and identifies good practices
for coordinating water policy across
ministries, between levels of government,
and across local actors at subnational level.
Based on a methodological framework, it
assesses the main coordination gaps in
terms of policy making, financing,
information, accountability, objectives and
capacity building, and provides a platform of existing governance
mechanisms to bridge them. Based on an extensive survey on water
governance the report provides a comprehensive institutional mapping
of roles and responsibilities in water policy-making at national/
subnational level in 17 OECD countries. It concludes on preliminary
multilevel governance guidelines for integrated water policy.

Drinking Water Quality
Best Practice Guide on the
Control of Iron and Manganese
in Water Supply
Authors: Adam Postawa and Colin Hayes
This Best Practice Guide on the Control of Iron
and Manganese in Water Supply is one of a
series produced by the International Water
Associations Specialist Group on Metals and
Related Substances in Drinking Water. Iron
and manganese are often found in soft
upland water sources associated with natural
organic matter and are also commonly found
in the groundwaters abstracted from
confined and unconfined aquifers.
The presence of iron and manganese in water is one of the most
frequent reasons for customers complaints due to aesthetic issues
(yellow, brown and black or stains on laundry and plumbing fixtures).
These two metals can be removed fairly readily by physico-chemical
treatment. The municipal treatment systems deployed derive benefit
from their larger scale, particularly in relation to control, but the
processes used are less suitable for the numerous small supplies that
are the most common water supplies throughout Europe especially
in rural areas. One important source of iron in drinking water is from
old corroded cast-iron water mains, historically the material used most
commonly in supply networks. Replacement and refurbishment is very
expensive and the major challenge is how best to prioritize available
expenditure.
The purpose for this Best Practice Guide on the Control of Iron
and Manganese in Water Supply is to give readers the broad view
of a problem based on state-of-the-art compilation of the range of
scientific, engineering, regulatory and operational issues concerned
with the control of iron and manganese in drinking water.

Drinking Water Quality
Internal Corrosion Control of
Water Supply Systems
Code of Practice
Editor: Colin Hayes
This Code of Practice is concerned with
metal pick-up by drinking water within the
water supply chain, particularly from water
mains and from domestic and institutional
pipe-work systems. The principal metals of
interest are copper, iron, and lead, and to a
lesser extent nickel and zinc. The emphasis is
on cold drinking water at its point of use by
consumers. Metals arising from water
sources and hot water systems are not
considered.
The intention is that this Code of Practice establishes an international
standard for the control of internal corrosion of water supply
systems. It provides a basis for identifying both problems and
sustainable solutions in a manner which is sound scientifically and
will help operators to achieve due diligence. It provides a template
for improving internal corrosion control in countries, cities or towns
where this has been neglected or poorly implemented.
Internal Corrosion Control of Water Supply Systems is deliberately brief
in its presentation of a wide array of complex information, in order to
provide direction to practitioners that can be more easily related to
their specific circumstances.
The book also provides a series of check-lists and criteria to be used
in risk assessment.

are appropriate for different types
of groundwater quantity (hydraulic
optimization) and quality (contaminant
transport optimization) problems, whether
they be deterministic, stochastic, single-
objective, or multiobjective in nature
Teaches you how to build your own S-O model or how to choose
from available transferrable S-O models
Offers guidance and flowcharts for simplifying and solving real-world
optimization problems
Uses a systems analysis approach to emphasize clear goals, inputs,
stimuli, processes, responses, and outputs
Teaches you how to develop and adapt optimal management
strategies, for implementation or use as metrics (such as for
performance-based contracting)

Drinking Water Quality
Best Practice Guide on Metals
Removal from Drinking Water by
Treatment
Editors: Mustafa Ersoz and Lisa Barrott
The EU Drinking Water Directive sets a
range of standards for metals and related
substances in drinking water, many of which
are concerned with health protection. A
number of these standards are very stringent
and require compliance to be assessed at the
point of use. Because of the difficulties
associated with monitoring, historic practices
in many countries have concentrated on the
quality of water within the distribution
network. As a result, the magnitude of
problems with some metals and related substances in drinking water is
not fully appreciated in all European countries, and the extent and
nature of corrective actions differ widely.
This Best Practice Guide on Metals Removal from Drinking Water by
Treatment describes drinking water standards and regulations, and
explains the impact of a range of water treatment processes on
metal levels in drinking water. Its objectives are to provide a basis for
assessing the extent of problems and to identify appropriate water
treatment options. The Guide provides a reasoned guide to selection
of key water treatment processes. Each chapter focuses on a specific
water treatment process and has been written by experts in that
particular process.
Best Practice Guide on Metals Removal from Drinking Water by
Treatment provides practice-based knowledge for water engineers
and scientists in large and small water utilities, regulatory agencies,
health agencies and local municipalities (from cities through to small
rural communities). It also supports university level teaching in degree
schemes that relate to water management.
This Guide is one of a series produced by the International Water
Associations Specialist Group on Metals and Related Substances in
Drinking Water. The series is an up-to-date compilation of a range of
scientific, engineering, regulatory and operational issues concerned with
the control and removal of metals from drinking water.

Drinking Water Quality
Disinfection By-Products and
Human Health
Editors: Steve E Hrudey and Jeffrey WA Charrois
Disinfection By-Products and Human Health is
based on contributions from speakers who
participated in May 2011 workshops on
Disinfection By-Products (DBPs) and Human
Health at Ozwater 11 in Adelaide, Australia
or at an AWA sponsored workshop at the
Curtin Water Quality Research Centre,
Perth, Australia.
The contributions are prepared to facilitate
communication with practitioners, rather
than researchers, making use of overview illustrations rather than
dense text or data tables. Each chapter concludes with up to 5 key
findings that are take-home messages for practitioners.
Disinfection By-Products and Human Health is aimed specifically
at drinking water professionals (engineers, chemists and public
health professionals) working on the front lines of drinking water
issues where they must encounter actual day-to-day issues of risk
management concerning DBPs in relation to all the other regulatory
and water quality issues they must manage.
Although a topic this complex is certainly not amenable to simplistic
explanations, this book aims to provide drinking water professionals
with a pragmatic assessment of the current evidence and emerging
issues concerning DBPs and public health.
Disinfection By-Products and Human Health is an essential, practical and
accessible guide for drinking water professionals, engineers, chemists
and public health professionals.

Drinking Water Quality
Water Reclamation Technologies
for Safe Managed Aquifer
Recharge
Editors: Christian Kazner, Thomas Wintgens, and
Peter Dillon
Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe
Managed Aquifer Recharge has been
developed from the RECLAIM WATER
project supported by the European
Commission under Thematic Priority Global
Change and Ecosystems of the Sixth
Framework Programme. Its strategic
objective is to develop hazard mitigation
technologies for water reclamation providing
safe and cost effective routes for managed
aquifer recharge.
Different treatment applications in terms of behaviour of key microbial
and chemical contaminants are assessed. Engineered as well as
natural treatment trains are investigated to provide guidance for
sustainable MAR schemes using alternative sources such as effluent
and stormwater. The technologies considered are also well suited
to the needs of developing countries, which have a growing need
of supplementation of freshwater resources. A broad range of
international full-scale case studies enables insights into long-term
system behaviour, operational aspects, and fate of a comprehensive
number of compounds and contaminants, especially organic
micropollutants and bulk organics.
Water Reclamation Technologies for Safe Managed Aquifer Recharge
depicts advances in water reclamation technologies and aims to
provide new process combinations to treat alternative water sources
to appropriate water quality levels for sustainable aquifer recharge.

Drinking Water Quality
Best Practice Guide on Sampling
and Monitoring of Metals in
Drinking Water
Editor: Adam Postawa
There is increasing concern regarding the
presence of metals, particularly heavy metals
in drinking water. In addition to the well-
known toxic effects of lead, which are
discussed at length in the Best Practice Guide
on the Control of Lead in Drinking Water (in
this series of Guides), the latest WHO guide
values for maximum mean concentrations of
arsenic, nickel and others in drinking water
have been lowered compared to previous
versions. European Union, USA and
National standards for drinking water have followed the trend based
largely on the same toxicological information.
There is currently growing interest in the presence of hexavalent
chromium in drinking water following its finding in some drinking
waters in the USA above the national upper limit for total chromium
and research suggesting that this limit needs to be considerably
lowered. Some metals, particularly iron and manganese are associated
with the production of discoloured (dirty) water in distribution systems
and are therefore very important to the production of water with
acceptable aesthetic qualities. Others (iron and aluminium) are key to
the treatment of raw waters to drinking water standards.
In most cases it is not possible to continuously monitor waters for
metals and suitable sampling programmes must be designed and
carried out to give results representative of the true water quality. The
Best Practice Guide on Sampling and Monitoring of Metals in Drinking
Water gives guidance on the design and quality control of sampling
programmes for metals in Raw waters, in the water treatment works,
in the drinking water distribution system and at the consumers tap.
It also gives guidance on the analytical methods that can be used for
the analysis of metals and quality control of those methods. Sampling
programmes on the same water will vary according to the purpose
for which they are carried out and the statistical techniques used to
determine and design the different types of programme are outlined.
Finally some case studies of optimisation of sampling are set out.
Best Practice Guide on Sampling and Monitoring of Metals in Drinking
Water is a valuable text for Scientists, Engineers and Quality Managers
working in Drinking Water Supply, Laboratory Managers and Scientists
who carry out Sampling and Analysis, and Water Industry Consultants.
It is also an excellent resource for Post Graduate and Research
workers in the field of Drinking water.

Drinking Water Quality
Cause and Prevention of
Clogging of Wells Abstracting
Groundwater from
Unconsolidated Aquifers
Authors: C.G.E.M. (Kees) van Beek
Groundwater serves many purposes. It is a
source of public and private drinking water, it
is utilized as an industrial feedstock and it is
used in agriculture for irrigation and cattle
watering. The abstraction of groundwater also
serves many civil engineering purposes such
as structures, construction pit dewatering and
remediation of polluted groundwater.
Furthermore, groundwater is increasingly
used for supply and storage of energy for the
cooling and heating of buildings.
Many wells abstracting groundwater suffer from impaired performance
as a result of clogging by mechanical or biogeochemical processes.
This represents a significant economic loss due to volume reductions,
cost of well rehabilitations or construction of new wells. Cause
and Prevention of Clogging of Wells Abstracting Groundwater from
Unconsolidated Aquifers provides a comprehensive description of the
various causes and processes associated with well clogging in addition
to describing methodologies for diagnosis and prevention.

Drinking Water Quality
Computational Fluid Dynamics in
Drinking Water Treatment
Author: Bas Wols
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) uses
advanced numerical models to predict flow,
mixing and (bio)-chemical reactions. In drinking
water engineering, CFD is increasingly applied
to predict the performance of treatment
installations and to optimise these installations.
A lack of understanding of the hydraulics in
drinking water treatment systems has resulted
in suboptimal design of installations. The
formation of unwanted disinfection-by-products
and the energy consumption or use of chemicals is therefore higher than
necessary. The aim of this work is to better understand the hydraulic and
(bio)-chemical processes in drinking water treatment installations using
experimental and numerical techniques. By combining these techniques,
CFD modelling is further developed as a tool to evaluate the performance
of these installations. This leads to new insights in the applicability of models
in ozone and UV systems, and new insights in design concepts of these
systems.
CFD modelling proves to be a powerful tool to understand the
hydrodynamic and (bio)-chemical processes in drinking water systems.
If applied properly, accounting for the complex turbulent motions and
validated by experiments, this tool leads to a better design of UV reactors,
ozone systems and other systems dictated by hydraulics.

Drinking Water Quality
Stochastic Water Demand
Modelling
Hydraulics in Water Distribution Networks
Author: Mirjam Blokker
Water quality processes in the drinking water
distribution network are strongly influenced
by the flow velocity and residence time of
the water in the network. In order to
understand how the water quality changes in
the drinking water distribution network, a
good understanding of hydraulics is required.
Specifically in the periphery of the network,
where customers are connected, the
hydraulics can change rapidly. During the
night time the water is almost stagnant and
the residence time increases. In the morning, when everybody gets
up and flushes the toilet and takes a shower, high flow velocities can
occur. During the remainder of the day flow velocities are low.
The stochastic endues model SIMDEUM was developed to simulate
water use on a small time scale (1 s) and small spatial scale (per
fixture). SIMDEUM enables a good model of flow velocities, residence
times and the connected water quality processes in the water
distribution network.
Stochastic Water Demand Modelling: Hydraulics in Water Distribution
Networks describes the requirements of hydraulics in water quality
modelling and provides insight into the development of detailed
residential and non-residential water demand models. The book
illustrates the use of detailed demand models in water quality models
with respect to the variation in residence times and the relation with
particle accumulation and resuspension. The models are compared to
measurements in several real drinking water distribution networks.

Soil and Water Contamination
2nd Edition
Author: Marcel van der Perk
Soil and Water Contamination, 2nd Edition
provides an overview of transport and fate
processes of environmental contamination,
in such a way that the reader can both
understand and predict contaminant patterns
in soil, groundwater, and surface water. In
contrast to most existing textbooks, soil and
water pollution are treated as integrated
environmental matter from a geographical/
spatial perspective at point, local, regional,
and catchment scales. The spatial approach
links up with recent developments and trends in environmental
legislation and other integrated catchment management initiatives.
This new edition contains valuable material on pesticides and
pharmaceutical contaminants and a greater number of exercises, case
studies and examples. A lecturer package with worked solutions and
exams will be made available upon adoption. This textbook describes
the environmental behaviour of major contaminant groups, including
nutrients, metals, radionuclides, and organic pollutants, which makes it
a valuable reference for quick evaluation of the chemical behaviour of
pollutants in the environment.
Soil and Water Contamination, 2nd Edition is intended for
undergraduate and graduate students in Earth and Environmental
Sciences, who understand the fundamentals of chemistry

Making Space for the River
Governance experiences with multifunctional
river flood management in the US and Europe
Editors: Jeroen Frank Warner, Arwin van Buuren and
Jurian Edelenbos
This book examines recent developments in
river (flood) management from the viewpoint
of Making Space for the River and the resulting
challenges for water governance. Different
examples from Europe and the United States
of America are discussed that aim to green
rivers, including increasing river discharge for
flood management, enhancing natural and
landscape values, promoting local or regional
economic development, and urban
regeneration.
Making Space for the River presents not only opportunities and
synergies but also risks as it crosses established institutional boundaries
and touches on multiple stakeholder interests, which can easily
clash. Making Space for the River helps the reader to understand the
policy and governance dynamics that lead to these tensions and pays
attention to a variety of attempts to organize effective and legitimate
governance approaches. The book helps to realize connections
between policy domains, problem frames, and goals of different actors
at different levels that contribute to decisive and legitimate action.
Making Space for the River has an international comparative character
that sheds light upon both the country-specific governance dilemmas
which relate to specific state traditions and institutional characteristics of
national water management, but also uncovers interesting similarities
which provide us with building blocks to formulate more generic
lessons about the governance of Making Space for the River in
different institutional and social contexts.
The authors of this book come from a variety of disciplines including
public administration, town and country planning, geography and
anthropology, and these different disciplines bring multiple ways of
knowing and understanding of Making Space for the River programs.
The book combines interdisciplinary scientific analyses of space for
the river projects and programs with practical knowing and lessons-
drawing. Making Space for the River is written for both practitioners and
scholars and students of environmental policy, spatial planning, land
use and water management.

Renewable Energy Applications
for Freshwater Production
Editors: Jochen Bundschuh and Jan Hoinkis
Worldwide, many regions have a great
potential to cover part of their pressing water
needs by renewable energy powered water
treatment processes using either thermal or
membrane based technologies. Not only
arid and semiarid regions are increasingly
exposed to water shortage but also many
other regions face a limitation of freshwater
resources either by increasing contamination
of surface water bodies and/or groundwater
resources unsuitable for drinking and
irrigation purposes either due to their high grade of mineralization or
their contents of toxic components as e.g. arsenic, which affects
worldwide the drinking water of over 200 million of people. In many
areas without centralized water supply, treatment techniques using
locally available renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and
geothermal can provide an economical, social and environmentally
sustainable option for clean water production from seawater and from
highly mineralized or otherwise unsuitable ground- and surface water.
Renewable Energy Applications for Freshwater Production provides
an overview on possible cost-efficient techniques and application
opportunities for different scales and shows why the implementation
of these technologies faces numerous technological, economic
and policy barriers and gives suggestions how these hurdles can be
overcome. Costs of novel treatment units using renewable energy
sources are discussed and compared with those of other technologies
for clean water production considering external costs, such as
environmental and social costs which are caused by using fossil fuel
based technologies. Energy efficiency is highlighted since it is of special
importance in systems that are to be powered by renewable energy.
Moreover applications of water supply systems providing water in
emergency condition are discussed.

Threats and Opportunities
Author: Gustaf Olsson
Professor Olssons book, Water and Energy
Threats and Opportunities, the result of a
meticulous multi-year effort, meets an
important and growing need: to define and
illuminate the critical linkage between water
and energy. He explores the water-energy
nexus in detail, and carefully discusses its
many implications, including for food
production and its connection to global climate
change. He properly and repeatedly
emphasizes the important message that water
and energy issues must be addressed together if society is to make wise
and efficient use of these critical resources. Given its comprehensive scope
and careful scholarship, the book will serve as a valuable addition to the
libraries of students, researchers, practitioners, and government officials at
all levels. Dr. Allan Hoffman, Senior Analyst, Department of Energy,
Washington DC

a milestone book in the efficient use of two important resources: water
and energy. The production of energy requires water, while the supply
of water services demands energy. Water and energy are the drivers for
almost all economic activities, and are of such importance that they are
at the origin of conflicts throughout the world. Blanca Jimnez Cisneros,

Gustaf Olsson illustrates the inextricable linkage between water and energy,
and demonstrates that an integrated and holistic approach as well as a
change of attitude is necessary to solve the complex water and energy
challenges we are facing. This book is full of enlightenment. Jining Chen,
Executive Vice Chancellor and Professor, Tsinghua University, Beijing
Gustaf Olsson persuasively demonstrates the need for a fundamental
global change. In the world of yesterday, it was tried - rather
unsuccessfully - to handle the water and energy challenges separately. In
the world of tomorrow, we need to tackle the challenges simultaneously.
I recommend policy makers, researchers as well as water and energy
professionals to familiarise themselves with this true and convincing
perspective of the water-energy nexus. Carsten Bjerg, CEO and Group
President, GRUNDFOS, Denmark
This book comes at the right time. Decreasing river flows aquifer
depletion growing dependence from seawater desalination for cities in
arid areas these are warning signals that water and energy security
are increasingly linked. Because he has shared his career between
energy and water management, Gustaf Olsson has a balanced and wide
ranging perspective. Jacques Labre, Coordinator of Thematic Priority
Harmonize energy and water, at the 6th World Water Forum
(Marseilles, March 2012)
Our most sincere congratulations for this excellent piece of work. It is
impressive; the amount of up-dated data, facts, statistics, ideas, relations
among them, thoughts, examples, and case studies... everything fully
integrated and justified. The book provides a complete and integral
view of the water and energy related problems, and moreover in a very
pedagogical and intuitive way. Only somebody like Gustaf Olsson with his
long experience and knowledge in this field, at local and global scale, and
unquestionable prestige, could write such an interesting book. Dr. Manel
Poch and Dr. Ignasi Rodriguez-Roda (ICRA, Catalan Institute for Water
Research, Girona), Dr. Quim Comas (University of Girona, Catalonia)
Contents:
Part One of the book describes the water-energy nexus, the
conflicts and competitions and the couplings between water security,
energy security, and food security.
Part Two captures how climate change, population increase and the
growing food demand will have major impact on water availability in
many countries in the world.
Part Three describes water for energy and how energy production
and conversion depend on water availability. As a consequence,
all planning has to take both water and energy into consideration.
The environmental (including water) consequences of oil and coal
exploration and refining are huge, in North America as well as in the
rest of the world. Furthermore, oil leak accidents have hit America,
Africa, Europe as well as Asia. The consequences of hydropower
are discussed and the competition between hydropower generation,
flood control and water storage is illustrated. The importance of water
for cooling thermal power plants is described, as this was so tragically
demonstrated at the Fukushima nuclear plants in 2011. Climate
change will further emphasize the strong coupling between water
availability and the operation of power plants.
Part Four analyses energy for water - how water production and
treatment depend on energy. The book shows that a lot can be
done to improve equipment, develop processes and apply advanced
monitoring and control to save energy for water operations. Significant
amounts of energy can be saved by better pumping, the reduction of
leakages, controlled aeration in biological wastewater treatment, more
efficient biogas production, and by improved desalination processes.
The Reader
The book is aimed at various kinds of readers:
The politician and decision maker providing a holistic view;
The engineer who wishes to find out about the key issues and to
understand the strong driving forces from the increasing population,
climate change and the food supply in the world;
The student who wishes to get an overview of future challenges
and new possibilities;
The planner water and energy have to be planned together;
The designer of a water and wastewater system how does
energy come in?
The operator of a water or a wastewater treatment plant what
are the possibilities to make the system more efficient;
The wastewater treatment manager what are the possibilities to
save and recover energy in a wastewater treatment plant;
The researcher looking for connections between different
specialities. What kind of cross-disciplinary research would be
needed;
The power and energy professional mostly the water issue is
forgotten - until there is water scarcity;
The water professional it is not only a matter of operating
water systems efficiently. Water professionals have to be much
more engaged in the water quantity and water quality implications
of energy generation. It is too late to attack the problems by
developing methods for the treatment of contaminated water.
The water consumption and the water pollution simply have to be
closely watched already at the energy production phase.

Arsenic in Groundwater:
Poisoning and Risk Assessment
Authors: M. Manzurul Hassan, and Peter J. Atkins
The main focus of Arsenic in Groundwater:
Poisoning and Risk Assessment is to explore
the untold stories of groundwater arsenic in
view of its poisonous nature for human
health, social implications, exposure and risk
assessment, worldwide concentrations with
space-time dimension, micro level GIS
application in spatial arsenic concentration,
policy response and mitigation options, and
water rights and legal issues of safe drinking
water. There are very few books on arsenic
issues and almost all the books are mainly based on geology,
geochemistry and health issues. There is a gap in spatial, social and
legal issues of arsenic toxicity, and the lack of literature on GIS-based
modelling for spatial risk of arsenic contamination is a serious
methodological limitation. Therefore, this book is a departure for
health geography with a social science and legal context.
The book deals with the arsenic issue within a social science point
framework, with the context being set by environmental and legal
considerations. Due consideration is given to the methodological
issues of spatial, quantitative and qualitative enquiries on arsenic
poisoning, for instance using GIS to investigate the distribution of
arsenic-laced water in space-time to uncover the pattern of variations
over scales from metres to kilometres. The production of spatial
risk maps provides an indication to researchers, policy makers, and
politicians of possible long-term strategies of mitigation. Qualitative
methodological approaches uncover the hidden issues of arsenic
poisoning on human health and their social implications as well as their
coping strategies and adaptation in the face of community and in-family
ostracism.

Best Practice Guide on the
Control of Arsenic in Drinking
Water
Editors: Prosun Bhattacharya, Dragana Jovanovic and
David Polya
This Best Practice Guide on the Control of
Arsenic in Drinking Water arises from the
knowledge collected by the European
Research Network COST Action 637
involving 27 European countries and the
USA. Besides the large number of important
papers, reports and reviews already available
on various aspects of arsenic occurrence in
environment, water and food and related
human exposure, this book fills a gap in the
field concerning assessment of risks,
implications, challenges, and actions required by public health
managers.
It focuses only on the key aspects of risk assessment, management and
communication relevant to higher levels of arsenic in drinking water,
which are geological factors, the extent of arsenic occurrence, total

exposure of arsenic and the role of drinking water, including regulatory
aspects as well as technical (treatment) issues.
The Best Practice Guide on the Control of Arsenic in Drinking Water
tries to raise public awareness on this subject, which seems to be low
and risks are being underestimated in a number of regions. This is
especially valid for Europe although less for other regions which are
typically more contaminated with arsenic.
The referred practices conform to the recommendations of the
World Health Organisation (WHO), the European Food Safety
Authority (EFSA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA). It is a useful guide for drinking water suppliers, experts of
municipalities, public health authorities, drinking water regulators and
non-governmental organisations.

Animal Waste, Water Quality and
Human Health
Editors: A Dufour and J Bartram
Domestic animals contaminate recreational
waters and drinking-water sources with
excreta and pathogens; but this threat to
public health is inadequately understood and
is insufficiently addressed in regulations.
More than 85% of the worlds faecal wastes
is from domestic animals such as poultry,
cattle, sheep and pigs. These animals harbor
zoonotic pathogens that are transported
in the environment by water, especially
runoff. However little information exists on health effects associated
with exposure to this potential hazard to human health; and water
standards focused on control of human fecal contamination do reflect
the contribution of non-human fecal contamination to risk.
Does compliance with current monitoring practices using microbial
indicators provide protection against animal and bird sources of fecal
contamination?
Prepared with contributions from a group of international experts,
Animal Waste, Water Quality and Human Health considers microbial
contamination from domestic animal and bird sources and explores
the health hazards associated with this microbial contamination and
approaches to protecting public health.
Animal Waste, Water Quality and Human Health will be of interest to
regulators with responsibility for recreational waters, drinking water
quality and water reuse; policymakers working in water quality,
public health and agriculture; decision makers responsible for livestock
management; and scientists and practitioners concerned with many
affected subjects.
Topics covered include:
Credible waterborne zoonotic pathogens are discussed and ranked
according to their potential hazard level. Each pathogen is described
with regard to their sources, reservoirs, and infectivity.
Faecal production rates of various domestic animals are discussed,
alongside pathogen transmission in animal populations, pathogen
prevalence in animals and supershedders.
Transport of fecal indicator organisms and their episodic occurrence
in catchments.
Interventions for improving food safety and reducing production
losses.
The impact of interventions, e.g. enhanced attenuation and storage
to prevent spills ; benchmarking against best management practices
to reduce diffuse source contamination.
Models to inform design of farm-scale best management practices
and the effectiveness of best management practices for attenuating
pathogen transport within catchments.
The complex nature of human exposure to zoonotic waterborne
pathogens; including the relationships among livestock waste
contamination, water impairment, zoonotic pathogens, and human
infection and illness.
Human exposure interventions include case studies that discuss
eradicating disease in discharging populations, adding filtration to
minimal treated water to reduce Cryptosporidium occurrence and
UV disinfection of beach waters to reduce beach postings.
Indicators, sanitary surveys and source attribution techniques;
risk assessment of exposure to zoonotic pathogens, including an
interactive risk comparison approach.
A review of epidemiological studies that address the relationship
between swimmer illness and exposure to waters contaminated by
nonhuman fecal wastes.
Economic evaluation of the costs and benefits associated with animal
waste management and human health.

Technology
Editors: Giampaolo Zuccheri and Nikolaos Asproulis
Detection of Pathogens in Water Using Micro
and Nano-Technology aims to promote the
uptake of innovative micro and nano-
technological approaches towards the
development of an integrated, cost-effective
nano-biological sensor useful for security and
environmental assays.
The book describes the concerted efforts of
a large European research project and the
achievements of additional leading research
groups. The reported knowledge and expertise should support in
the innovation and integration of often separated unitary processes.
Sampling, cell lysis and DNA/RNA extraction, DNA hybridisation
detection micro- and nanosensors, microfluidics, together also with
computational modelling and risk assessment can be integrated in
the framework of the current and evolving European regulations
and needs. The development and uptake of molecular methods
is revolutionizing the field of waterborne pathogens detection,
commonly performed with time-consuming cultural methods.
The molecular detection methods are enabling the development
of integrated instruments based on biosensor that will ultimately
automate the full pathway of the microbiological analysis of water.

Environmental Aspects of Zoonotic Diseases
Authors: Robert Armon and Uta Cheruti
Environmental Aspects of Zoonotic Diseases
provides a definitive description, commentary
and research needs of environmental aspects
related to zoonotic diseases.
There are many interrelated connections
between the environment and zoonotic
diseases such as: water, soil, air and
agriculture.
The book presents investigations of these
connections, with specific reference to environmental processes such
as: deforestation, floods, draughts, irrigation practices, soil transfer and
their impact on bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitological spread.
Environmental aspects such as climate (tropical, sub-tropical,
temperate, arid and semi-arid), developed and undeveloped
countries, animal (domestic and wild) traffic animal border crossing,
commercial animal trade, transportation, as well geography and
weather on zoonosis, are also discussed and relevant scientific data
is condensed and organized in order to give a better picture of
interrelationship between the environment and current spread of
zoonotic diseases.
Altogether, the book presents a remarkable and a vast amount of
potential future research directions based on the link: environment-
vectors-pathogens-humans.
The most up-to-date source of information on this increasingly
important cross-disciplinary subject, Environmental Aspects
of Zoonotic Diseases will be invaluable for environmentalists,
veterinarians, medical staff, environmental engineers, government
agencies and consultants working in this field.

History of Water & Wastewater
Evolution of Water Supply
Through the Millennia
Authors: Andreas N Angelakis, Larry W Mays,
Demetris Koutsoyiannis, and Nikos Mamassis
Evolution of Water Supply Through the
Millennia presents the major achievements in
the scientific fields of water supply
technologies and management throughout
the millennia. It provides valuable insights into
ancient water supply technologies with their
apparent characteristics of durability,
adaptability to the environment, and
sustainability. A comparison of the water
technological developments in several
civilizations is undertaken. These
technologies are the underpinning of modern achievements in water
engineering and management practices. It is the best proof that the
past is the key for the future.
Rapid technological progress in the twentieth century created a
disregard for past water technologies that were considered to be
far behind the present ones. There are a great deal of unresolved
problems related to the management principles, such as the
decentralization of the processes, the durability of the water projects,
the cost effectiveness, and sustainability issues such as protection from
floods and droughts. In the developing world, such problems were
intensified to an unprecedented degree.
Moreover, new problems have arisen such as the contamination
of surface and groundwater. Naturally, intensification of unresolved
problems led societies to revisit the past and to reinvestigate the
successful past achievements. To their surprise, those who attempted
this retrospect, based on archaeological, historical, and technical
evidence were impressed by two things: the similarity of principles
with present ones and the advanced level of water engineering and
management practices.
Evolution of Water Supply Through the Millennia is intended for engineers
in water resources companies, hydraulic design companies, and water
Institutes. It can be used for all courses related to water resources.

History of Water & Wastewater
Aerobic Wastewater Treatment
Processes
History and Development
Author: David F Tilley
Aerobic Wastewater Treatment Processes:
History and Development discusses the widely
differing influences on the development of
aerobic treatment such as water supply, toxic
trade effluents, microscopy and population
growth in urban areas. It covers the historical
development of sewage treatment and the
emergence of aerobic biological treatment
from the early nineteenth century to the
present day.
The importance of water supply and the influence this had on the
water-carriage system is examined, as is the consequent discharge of
sewage into rivers. The factors which govern process selection and
process development are discussed. There is a continued impetus
to reduce land area, capital costs, running costs, and to optimise
performance and process control.
The discovery of the activated sludge process is detailed including
the development, in the early 1900s, of many forms of this process.
Industrial wastes were discharged to biological treatment systems
and the impact of such pollutants is reviewed. The work of Royal
Commissions, River Boards and the National Rivers Authority is
summarised, and the advances in chemical analysis and on-line
measurement of chemical quality characteristics.
Later developments such as reed beds and the use of hybrid
treatment systems are covered. Examples are included such as the
fixed film activated sludge process which has found application for
small communities in package form, and also for large-scale municipal
treatment plants.

Computational Hydraulics
Numerical Methods and Modelling
Author: Ioana Popescu
Computational Hydraulics introduces the
concept of modelling and the contribution of
numerical methods and numerical analysis to
modelling. It provides a concise and
comprehensive description of the basic
hydraulic principles, and the problems
addressed by these principles in the aquatic
environment. Flow equations, numerical and
analytical solutions are included.
The necessary steps for building and applying
numerical methods in hydraulics comprise the core of the book
and this is followed by a report of different example applications of
computational hydraulics: river training effects on flood propagation,
water quality modelling of lakes and coastal applications.
The theory and exercises included in the book promote learning of
concepts within academic environments. Sample codes are made
available online for purchasers of the book.

Optimisation of Corrosion
Control for Lead in Drinking
Water
Using Computational Modelling Techniques
Authors: Colin Hayes and T N Croft
In many respects, lead in drinking water has
become a forgotten problem, since the mid
1980s when a range of environmental
controls were implemented to reduce
exposure to lead. This is largely because the
sampling protocols, that underpin regulatory
controls, are mostly inadequate and have
tended to under-estimate the amount of
lead that can be present in drinking water
(IWA, 2010).
Optimisation of Corrosion Control for Lead in Drinking Water Using
Computational Modelling Techniques shows how compliance
modelling has been used to very good effect in the optimisation of
plumbosolvency control in the United Kingdom, particularly in the
optimisation of orthophosphate dosing. Over 100 water supply
systems have been modelled, involving 30% of the UKs water
companies. This proof-of-concept project has the overall objective
of demonstrating that these modelling techniques could also be
applicable to the circumstances of Canada and the United States, via
three case studies.
This report is the first in the Research Report Series that is being
published by the IWA Specialist Group on Metals and Related
Substances in Drinking Water.

Guidelines for Using Activated
Sludge Models
Authors: IWA Task Group on Good Modelling Practice
- Leiv Rieger, Sylvie Gillot, Guenter Langergraber,
Takayuki Ohtsuki, Andy Shaw, Imre Takacs, and Stefan
Winkler
Mathematical modelling of activated sludge
systems is used widely for plant design,
optimisation, training, controller design and
research. The quality of simulation studies
varies depending on the project objectives,
finances and expertise available.
Consideration has to be given to the model
accuracy and the amount of time required
carrying out a simulation study to produce
the desired accuracy. Inconsistent
approaches and insufficient documentation
make quality assessment and comparison of simulation results difficult
or almost impossible. A general framework for the application of
activated sludge models is needed in order to overcome these
obstacles.
The genesis of the Good Modelling Practice (GMP) Task Group
lies in a workshop held at the 4th IWA World Water Congress in
Marrakech, Morocco where members of research groups active in
wastewater treatment modelling came together to develop plans to
synthesize the best practices of modellers from all over the world.
The most cited protocols were included in the work, amongst others
from: HSG (Hochschulgruppe), STOWA, BIOMATH and WERF.
The goal of the group is to set up an internationally accepted
framework to deal with the ASM type models in practice. This
framework shall make modelling more straightforward and systematic
to use especially for practitioners and consultants. Additionally, it shall
help to define quality levels for simulation results, a procedure to
assess this quality and to assist in the proper use of the models.
The framework will describe a methodology for goal-oriented
application of activated sludge models demonstrated by means of
a concise guideline about the procedure of a simulation study and
some illustrative case studies. The case studies shall give examples for
the required data quality and quantity and the effort for calibration/
validation with respect to a defined goal. The final report will include
an extended appendix with additional information and details of
methodologies.
Additional features in Guidelines for Using Activated Sludge Models
include a chapter on modelling industrial wastewater, an overview on
the history, current practice and future of activated sludge modelling
and several explanatory case studies. It can be used as an introductory
book to learn about Good Modelling Practice (GMP) in activated
sludge modelling and will be of special interest for process engineers
who have no prior knowledge of modelling or for lecturers who need
a textbook for their students. The STR can also be used as a modelling
reference book and includes an extended appendix with additional
information and details of methodologies.

Tuning Biological Nutrient
Removal Plants
Author: Ken Hartley
Tuning Biological Nutrient Removal Plants
increases interest in tuning to enhance both
performance and capacity, to provide insight
into typical plant operating characteristics, and
to stimulate operators interest in studying
the behaviour of their own plants. The book
focuses on understanding of plant
behavioural characteristics so that optimum
performance can be achieved and
maintained.
Tuning Biological Nutrient Removal Plants is carefully organized to cover:
influent and effluent characteristics;
process fundamentals;
individual process characteristics;
overall plant characteristics;
the evolutionary operation approach to tuning.
The approach is practical and the use of mathematics is kept to a
minimum and information is supplied in graphical and tabular form.
Real operating data from a wide range of plant experiences is included.
The book draws on the generosity of many Australian plant owners
in permitting their plant data to be incorporated. Not all process
types are covered but the tuning principles expounded are universally
applicable.
The capacity and performance capabilities of a plant are not fixed;
both are amenable to on-going enhancement through systematic and
enthusiastic effort. The book will help to set new benchmarks in plant
operation.
Tuning Biological Nutrient Removal Plants is a valuable resource for
sewage treatment operations and operations support personnel,
sewage process design engineers - operating authorities, consultants,
contractors, operators of industrial wastewater treatment plants and
sewage treatment lecturers in chemical engineering departments and
other training organisations.

International Guidance Manual
for the Management of Toxic
Cyanobacteria
Edited by Dr Gayle Newcombe
Cyanobacteria are a concern for water
authorities worldwide as their persistence in
water supplies causes numerous problems
for water treatment plants. However, the
major concern associated with the presence
of cyanobacteria is the metabolites they
produce, taste and odour compounds,
particularly 2-methyl isoborneol and
geosmin, and a range of toxic compounds
known collectively as algal toxins, or
cyanotoxins.
The management of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins is one of
the priority issues and this international guidance manual aims to
consolidate the available knowledge and information:
to understand the importance of cyanobacteria and the toxins they
produce
to assess the risks associated with a particular water source
to develop a monitoring program and incident management
strategies consistent with the WHO Water Safety Planning process
to instigate management procedures both in the source water and
treatment plants to mitigate the risks posed by the presence of toxic
compounds in drinking water.
This manual is a user-friendly document that can be accessed on
several levels, from basic information for the water quality manager
who knows very little about cyanobacteria, to those requiring more
detailed guidance on, for example, source water management
methods, or doses of activated carbon required to reduce toxin
concentration to below the WHO guideline. It is hoped this manual is
accessed by water utilities world-wide, and feedback on its application
will be used to update and implement

Water Footprinting in the Urban
Water Sector
Editor: Kylie Hyde
The term Water Footprinting can be used to
describe an emerging set of tools that can be
applied to obtain information about the
consumption and degradation of fresh water
over a defined period of time. The impact
that the consumption and degradation of
fresh water resources has on the
environment and society can be assessed

Flood Risk and Social Justice
From Quantitative to Qualitative Flood Risk
Assessment and Mitigation
Authors: Zoran Vojinovic and Michael B. Abbott
Flood Risk and Social Justice is a response to
the rising significance of floods and flood-
related disasters worldwide, an initiative to
promote a holistic viewpoint of how to
approach the problem of flood risk in a socially
just way. This book is accordingly about
socially just flood risk mitigation practices in
which the process of engaging in social justice
requires multidisciplinary approaches which
start from social needs and concerns and
proceed in indefinable feedback cycles where the acceptable social,
ethical, technical and environmental norms and standards continuously
change, leading to transcendences in levels of understanding and
consciousness.
In this book, the question of how to judge whether a risk is
acceptable or not requires much deeper social and phenomenological
considerations rather than simple calculations of probabilities multiplied
by unwanted outcomes and their balancing between costs and benefits.
The book discusses these and some other important aspects and it
suggests that the present flood management practice should adopt
the social justice approach and pay particular attention on what is the
right thing to do within a much wider context which does not deny the
validity of modes of human understanding which cannot be addressed
within the spirit of modern science. Therefore, the material presented
in this book is in some parts philosophical and theoretical and in some
other parts it is purely scientific and technical.
Flood Risk and Social Justice is written to support a wide range of
audiences and seeks to improve the dialogue between researchers
and practitioners from different disciplines (including post-graduate
engineering and social science students, industry practitioners,
academics, planners, environmental advocacy groups and environmental
law professionals) who have a strong interest in a new kind of social
justice work that can act as a continuous counter-force to the various
mechanisms that unceasingly give rise to injustices.

Utility Management
Compendium of Best Practices in
Asset Management
Editor: J. N. Bhagwan
The increased scientific knowledge of the
management of water infrastructure, is
forcing the application of radical and
innovative techniques, that goes beyond
seen pipes, tanks and pumps as infrastructure
in the ground, but as assets which have an
operational life and effective and efficient use
of these component impacts on our ability as
water providers and utilities to continue to
provide high quality, high assurance water
and sanitation services at reliably and
affordably. They are now being seen as the lifeblood of the
community, since they protect public health and they insure that local
economies and national economies continue to run.
Mounting evidence internationally suggests that the integrity of drinking
water and wastewater infrastructure is at risk without a concerted
effort to improve the management of key assetspipelines, treatment
plants, and other facilities - and a significant investment in maintaining,
rehabilitating, and replacing these assets.
The application of asset management principles in the global water
industry is of particular interest at the present time due to pressures
from governments, regulators, shareholders and consumer groups
in many countries to provide cost-effective and sustainable water
services at least cost to customers and the environment. Recognising
that the application of good science and innovation was on a rapid
incline, it was deemed necessary to capture these novel and creative
applications, techniques and process which were contributing to this
new area of importance.
This GWRC Compendium of Best Practices in Asset Management
demonstrates the advancements and progress being made in applying
innovative and novel techniques and processes in the management
of water and sanitation infrastructure. The cases highlight examples in
different countries on strategic initiatives at the highest level, through
the development of the policy and legislation towards ensuring that
asset management becomes a legal requirement for all water services
providers; innovation techniques for infrastructure risk assessment;
decision- making techniques for capital investments; studies on the
implementation of Asset management in utility practice, the use of
GIS and IT technology, and the various little techniques of meter
replacement, pressure management, continuous leak detection and
rehabilitation of infrastructure.

Water & Wastewater Treatment
Evolution of Sanitation and
Wastewater Technologies
through the Centuries
Editors: Andreas N. Angelakis, Peter A. Wilderer and
Joan Bray Rose
Most of the technological developments
relevant to water supply and wastewater
date back to more than to five thousand
years ago. These developments were driven
by the necessity to make efficient use of
natural resources, to make civilizations more
resistant to destructive natural elements, and
to improve the standards of life, both at
public and private level.
Rapid technological progress in the 20th
century created a disregard for past sanitation and wastewater and
stormwater technologies that were considered to be far behind the
present ones. A great deal of unresolved problems in the developing
world related to the wastewater management principles, such as the
decentralization of the processes, the durability of the water projects,
the cost effectiveness, and sustainability issues, such as protection from
floods and droughts were intensified to an unprecedented degree.
New problems have arisen such as the contamination of surface
and groundwater. Naturally, intensification of unresolved problems
has led to the reconsideration of successful past achievements. This
retrospective view, based on archaeological, historical, and technical
evidence, has shown two things: the similarity of physicochemical and
biological principles with the present ones and the advanced level of
wastewater engineering and management practices.
Evolution of Sanitation and Wastewater Technologies through the
Centuries presents and discusses the major achievements in the
scientific fields of sanitation and hygienic water use systems throughout
the millennia, and compares the water technological developments
in several civilizations. It provides valuable insights into ancient
wastewater and stormwater management technologies with their
apparent characteristics of durability, adaptability to the environment,
and sustainability. These technologies are the underpinning of modern
achievements in sanitary engineering and wastewater management
practices. It is the best proof that the past is the key for the future.
Evolution of Sanitation and Wastewater Technologies through the
Centuries is a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses of
Water Resources, Civil Engineering, Hydraulics, Ancient History,
Archaeology, Environmental Management and is also a valuable
resource for all researchers in the these fields.

Experimental Methods in
Wastewater Treatment
Editors: M.C.M. van Loosdrecht, J. Keller, P.H.
Nielsen, C.M. Lopez-Vazquez, and D. Brdjanovic
Over the past twenty years, the knowledge
and understanding of wastewater treatment
has advanced extensively and moved away
from empirically based approaches to a
fundamentally-based first principles approach
embracing chemistry, microbiology, and
physical and bioprocess engineering, often
involving experimental laboratory work and
techniques. Many of these experimental
methods and techniques have matured to
the degree that they have been accepted as
reliable tools in wastewater treatment research and practice. For
sector professionals, especially a new generation of young scientists
and engineers entering the wastewater treatment profession, the
quantity, complexity and diversity of these new developments can be
overwhelming, particularly in developing countries where access to
advanced level laboratory courses in wastewater treatment is not
readily available. In addition, information on innovative experimental
methods is scattered across scientific literature and only partially
available in the form of textbooks or guidelines. This book seeks to

Faecal Sludge Management
Systems Approach for Implementation and
Operation
Editors: Linda Strande, Mariska Ronteltap and Damir
Brdjanovic
It is estimated that literally billions of residents
in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia,
and Latin America are served by onsite
sanitation systems (e.g. various types of
latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the
management of faecal sludge from these
onsite systems has been grossly neglected,
partially as a result of them being considered
temporary solutions until sewer-based
systems could be implemented. However,
the perception of onsite or decentralized
sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is
increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in
urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack
sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge
management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly
evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated
approach that includes technology, management, and planning based
on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field.
Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation
and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge
management service chain, from the collection and transport of
sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to
the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents
important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new
treatment technology options.
The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students,
and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic
knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Applications of Activated Sludge
Models
Editors: D. Brdjanovic, S.C.F Meijer, C.M. Lopez-
Vazquez, C.M. Hooijmans, and M.C.M. van Loosdrecht
In 1982 the International Association on
Water Pollution Research and Control
(IAWPRC), as it was then called, established
a Task Group on Mathematical Modelling for
Design and Operation of Activated Sludge
Processes. The aim of the Task Group was
to create a common platform that could be
used for the future development of models
for COD and N removal with a minimum of
complexity. As the collaborative result of the
work of several modelling groups, the
Activated Sludge Model No. 1 (ASM1) was published in 1987, exactly
25 years ago. The ASM1 can be considered as the reference model,
since this model triggered the general acceptance of wastewater
treatment modelling, first in the research community and later on also
in practice. ASM1 has become a reference for many scientific and
practical projects, and has been implemented (in some cases with
modifications) in most of the commercial software available for
modelling and simulation of plants for N removal. The models have
grown more complex over the years, from ASM1, including N
removal processes, to ASM2 (and its variations) including P removal
processes, and ASM3 that corrects the deficiencies of ASM1 and is
based on a metabolic approach to modelling. So far, ASM1 is the
most widely applied.
Applications of Activated Sludge Models has been prepared in
celebration of 25 years of ASM1 and in tribute to the activated
sludge modelling pioneer, the late Professor G.v.R. Marrais. It
consists of a dozen of practical applications for ASM models to model
development, plant optimization, extension, upgrade, retrofit and
troubleshooting, carried out by the members of the Delft modelling
group over the last two decades.

Handbook of Environmental
Odour Management
Editors: Franz-Bernd Frechen, Jean-Michel Guillot,
Richard M. Stuetz, Anton P. van Harreveld
Complaints due to odour annoyance have
become a major issue for wastewater
treatment plant, waste management, landfill,
intensive livestock and other industrial
operators as the repeated release of
unpleasant odorous emissions can constitute
a nuisance to a local population. Traditionally,
odour management has been maintained by
the use of buffer distances between industry
and receptors or by the installation of odour
abatement systems that both collect and
disperse the emission or treat the emission to acceptable level to limit
receptor impact. With the expansion of suburbia and the associated
encroachment, residents and industry are coming into closer proximity
than in the past. This interaction is unpredictable, complex and difficult
to address. Integrated odour impact management approaches
involving improved measurement and understanding of odorous
emissions, their impact on local receptors, treatment performance and
integration in local community relations programs are needed to meet
the potential impact due to population growth and increasing global
urbanisation.

Uncertainty in Wastewater
Treatment Design and Operation
Addressing Current Practices and Future
Directions
Editors: Evangelina Belia, Marc B. Neumann, Lorenzo
Benedetti, Bruce Johnson, Sudhir Murthy, Stefan
Weijers and Peter A. Vanrolleghem (IWA Task Group
on Design and Operations Uncertainty - DOUTGroup)
Uncertainty in Wastewater Treatment Design
and Operation aims to facilitate the transition
of the wastewater profession to the
probabilistic use of simulators with the
associated benefits of being better able to
take advantage of opportunities and manage
risk.
There is a paradigm shift taking place in the
design and operation of treatment plants in
the water industry. The market is currently in
transition to use modelling and simulation while still using conventional
heuristic guidelines (safety factors). Key reasons for transition include:
wastewater treatment simulation software advancements; stricter
effluent requirements that cannot be designed for using traditional
approaches, and increased pressure for more efficient designs
(including energy efficiency, green house gas emissions control).
There is increasing consensus among wastewater professionals that
the performance of plants and the predictive power of their models
(degree of uncertainty) is a critical component of plant design and
operation. However, models and simulators used by designers
and operators do not incorporate methods for the evaluation of
uncertainty associated with each design. Thus, engineers often
combine safety factors with simulation results in an arbitrary way
based on designer experience. Furthermore, there is not an
accepted methodology (outside modelling) that translates uncertainty
to assumed opportunity or risk and how it is distributed among
consultants/contractors and owners.
Uncertainty in Wastewater Treatment Design and Operation documents
how uncertainty, opportunity and risk are currently handled in the
wastewater treatment practice by consultants, utilities and regulators.

The book provides a useful set of terms and definitions relating to
uncertainty and promotes an understanding of the issues and terms
involved. It identifies the sources of uncertainty in different project
phases and presents a critical review of the available methods. Real-
world examples are selected to illustrate where and when sources
of uncertainty are introduced and how models are implemented and
used in design projects and in operational optimisation. Uncertainty in
Wastewater Treatment Design and Operation defines the developments
required to provide improved procedures and tools to implement
uncertainty and risk evaluations in projects. It will be a vital reference
for utilities, regulators, consultants, and trained management dealing
with certainty, opportunity and risk in wastewater treatment.

Nanotechnology for Water and
Wastewater Treatment
Editors: P. Lens, J.Virkutyte, V. Jegatheesan, Seung-
Hyun Kim and S. Al-Abed
The rapid development of nanoscience
enables a technology revolution that will
soon impact virtually every facet of the water
sector. Yet, there is still too little
understanding of what nanoscience and
nanotechnology is, what can it do and
whether to fear it or not, even among the
educated public as well as scientists and
engineers from other disciplines.
Despite the numerous books and textbooks
available on the subject, there is a gap in the literature that bridges
the space between the synthesis (conventional and more greener
methods) and use (applications in the drinking water production,
wastewater treatment and environmental remediation fields) of
nanotechnology on the one hand and its potential environmental
implications (fate and transport of nanomaterials, toxicity, Life Cycle
Assessments) on the other.
Nanotechnology for Water and Wastewater Treatment explores these
topics with a broad-based multidisciplinary scope and can be used
by engineers and scientists outside the field and by students at both
undergraduate and post graduate level.

Water & Wastewater Treatment
Source Separation and
Decentralization for Wastewater
Management
Editors: Tove A. Larsen, Kai M. Udert and Judit Lienert
Is sewer-based wastewater treatment really
the optimal technical solution in urban water
management? This paradigm is increasingly
being questioned. Growing water scarcity
and the insight that water will be an
important limiting factor for the quality of
urban life are main drivers for new
approaches in wastewater management.
Source Separation and Decentralization for
Wastewater Management sets up a
comprehensive view of the resources
involved in urban water management. It explores the potential of
source separation and decentralization to provide viable alternatives to
sewer-based urban water management.
During the 1990s, several research groups started working on
source-separating technologies for wastewater treatment. Source
separation was not new, but had only been propagated as a cheap
and environmentally friendly technology for the poor. The novelty
was the discussion whether source separation could be a sustainable
alternative to existing end-of-pipe systems, even in urban areas and
industrialized countries.
Since then, sustainable resource management and many different
source-separating technologies have been investigated. The theoretical
framework and also possible technologies have now developed to a
more mature state. At the same time, many interesting technologies
to process combined or concentrated wastewaters have evolved,
which are equally suited for the treatment of source-separated
domestic wastewater.
The book presents a comprehensive view of the state of the art
of source separation and decentralization. It discusses the technical
possibilities and practical experience with source separation in different
countries around the world. The area is in rapid development, but
many of the fundamental insights presented in this book will stay valid.
Source Separation and Decentralization for Wastewater Management is
intended for all professionals and researchers interested in wastewater
management, whether or not they are familiar with source separation.

Energy and Resource Recovery
from Sludge
Editors: Y. Kalogo and H. Monteith
There is general consensus among sanitary
engineering professionals that municipal
wastewater and wastewater sludge is not a
waste, but a potential source of valuable
resources.
Energy and Resource Recovery from Sludge
provides essential knowledge on energy
and resource recovery from sludge and
focuses on:
The international situation of energy and resource recovery from
sludge,
How the use of different sludge treatment processes affects the
possibility of recovering energy and/or materials from the residual
sludge,
The influence of market and regulatory drivers on the fate of the
sludge end-product,
The feasibility of energy and resource recovery from sludge,
The social, economic and environmental performance (triple
bottom line or TBL assessment) of current alternatives technologies.
International cases studies of established technologies existing at full-scale
with commercial applications, as well as those that can potentially be
commercialized are provided. Emerging technologies that have been
demonstrated only at pilot-scale or bench (laboratory) scale are included.
Energy recovery technologies can be classified into sludge-to-biogas
processes, sludge-to-syngas processes, sludge-to-oil processes and
sludge-to-liquid processes. The technologies available for resource
recovery include those to recover phosphorus, building materials,
nitrogen, volatile acids, etc. Technical, capital cost, operating and
maintenance (O&M) costs information available are documented
to the extent possible for each technology. Possibilities of upgrading
biosolids pellets produced from sludge as renewable source of
inoculum for bio-hydrogen gas production and also recovering of bio-
pesticides from sludge are new research areas.

long time for disinfection and oxidation in
water treatment, there is lack of critical
information related to transformation of
organic compounds. This has become more
important in recent years, because there is
considerable concern about the formation of
potentially harmful degradation products as
well as oxidation products from the reaction
with the matrix components. In recent years,
a wealth of information on the products that
are formed has accumulated, and substantial progress in understanding
mechanistic details of ozone reactions in aqueous solution has been
made. Based on the latter, this may allow us to predict the products of
as yet not studied systems and assist in evaluating toxic potentials in
case certain classes are known to show such effects. Keeping this in
mind, Chemistry of Ozone in Water and Wastewater Treatment: From
Basic Principles to Applications discusses mechanistic details of ozone
reactions as much as they are known to date and applies them to the
large body of studies on micropollutant degradation (such as
pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors) that is already available.
Extensively quoting the literature and updating the available
compilation of ozone rate constants gives the reader a text at hand on
which his research can be based. Moreover, those that are
responsible for planning or operation of ozonation steps in drinking
water and wastewater treatment plants will find salient information in a
compact form that otherwise is quite disperse.
A critical compilation of rate constants for the various classes
of compounds is given in each chapter, including all the recent
publications. This is a very useful source of information for researchers
and practitioners who need kinetic information on emerging
contaminants. Furthermore, each chapter contains a large selection
of examples of reaction mechanisms for the transformation of
micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fuel additives,
solvents, taste and odor compounds, cyanotoxins.

Water & Wastewater Treatment
Sustainable Treatment and
Reuse of Municipal Wastewater
For Decision Makers and Practicing Engineers
Authors: Menahem Libhaber and Alvaro Orozco
Jaramillo
In many countries, especially in developing
countries, many people are lacking access to
water and sanitation services and this
inadequate service is the main cause of
diseases in these countries. Application of
appropriate wastewater treatment
technologies, which are effective, low cost
(in investment and especially in operation
and maintenance), simple to operate, proven
technologies, is a key component in any
strategy aimed at increasing the coverage of
wastewater treatment.
Sustainable Treatment and Reuse of Municipal Wastewater presents
the concepts of appropriate technology for wastewater treatment and
the issues of strategy and policy for increasing wastewater treatment
coverage. The book focuses on the resolution of wastewater
treatment and disposal problems in developing countries, however
the concepts presented are valid and applicable anywhere and plants
based on combined unit processes of appropriate technology can
also be used in developed countries and provide to them the benefits
described.
Sustainable Treatment and Reuse of Municipal Wastewater presents
the basic engineering design procedures to obtain high quality effluents
by treatment plants based on simple, low cost and easy to operate
processes. The main message of the book is the idea of the ability to
combine unit processes to create a treatment plant based on a series
of appropriate technology processes which jointly can generate any
required effluent quality.
A plant based on a combination of appropriate technology unit
processes is still easy to operate and is usually of lower costs than
conventional processes in terms of investment and certainly in
operation and maintenance.
Chapters in the book are organized in a practical and accessible way
to:
demonstrate selected unit process of appropriate technology
and provide the scientific basis, the equations and the parameters
required to design the unit processes, with some innovations
developed by the authors.
highlight design procedures for selected combined processes which
are in use in developing countries.
propose an innovative Orderly Design Method (ODM), which
is easy to follow by practicing engineers, using the equations and
formulas developed, once the fundamentals of each unit and
combined process have been established.
provide a numeric example for the basic design of each selected
appropriate technology process for a city with a population of
20,000 using the ODM and an Excel program which will be
provided to the readers for download from an online web page.
This book is a valuable and practical resource for all wastewater
treatment engineers in field and the operational managers of waste
treatment facilities.

and developed countries.
The early chapters discuss the key elements, with later chapters
considering how these elements have come together in successful
reforms of public sector operations. A chapter is devoted to the
successful use of the private sector based on lessons learnt from
failures of private contracts and the need for the application of sound
procurement principles. The current trend is for a public sector model
which benefits from business approaches, the so-called corporatised
public utility.
Experience since the publication of the first edition in 2007 reinforces
the importance of the key elements for sustainable water services.
This second edition brings the material up to date and with some
increased emphasis on public participation in its many forms. It refers
to the opportunity for progress provided by the UN Declaration of
Water and Sanitation as a Human Right, but only if it is implemented
in a practical and sustainable way.
Institutional Governance and Regulation of Water Services is aimed at
providing an informative source for national and local governments
responsible for water policy, for water utility managers, and for
students who will be the policy makers of tomorrow. It is a teaching
aid for courses on water policy, governance and regulation.

Public Private Partnerships in
the Water Sector
Innovation and Financial Sustainability
Authors: Cledan Mandri-Perrott and David Stiggers
Public sector funding and resources are often
inadequate to meet increasing demands for
investment and effective management, and a
growing case history shows increasing
involvement by the private sector in
provision of infrastructure and services
through PPP arrangements. The objective of
this book is to determine, and make
recommendations on, means of optimizing
the use of Public Private Partnerships (PPP) in
development of infrastructure whilst ensuring
the sustainable long term provision of water and waste water services.
The focus is on providing detailed recommendations on contractual
issues and contract structures to achieve this objective.
Public Private Partnerships in the Water Sector - Innovation and Financial
Sustainability:
Identifies what is needed to establish effective and sustainable water
and wastewater service reform when using a PPP arrangement, and
importantly how those issues can be addressed contractually.
Provides specific recommendations of a comprehensive and detailed
approach to contract drafting to ensure effective, sustainable and
long term provision of water and wastewater services, including an
approach for adaptation of public procurement procedures for PPP
arrangements.
Recommends a proposed approach to dealing with the influence
of imperfect or unavailable data on the long term effectiveness or
sustainability.
This is a practical and pragmatic book in which the author shares
his considerable experience on devising and implementing PPPs in
the water sector. It is aimed primarily at practitioners working with
developing countries but its recommendations will also be suitable for
application in developed countries. It will also be a useful reference for
postgraduates and academics studying infrastructure development.

Sustainable Water Ecosystems
Management in Europe
Bridging the Knowledge of Citizens, Scientists
and Policy Makers
Editor: Carlo Sessa
Sustainable Water Ecosystems Management
in Europe examines the anthropogenic
deterioration of water ecosystems, in
particular in coastal areas. It proposes a new
approach to enhance connectivity between
research and policy-making. The book
exploits the concept of integrated adaptive
ecosystem management, by engaging
scientists, policy makers and the public (the
latter including both stakeholders and lay
citizens/water users) in comparable case
studies. Emphasis is given to the role of the public to enlarge the
concept of organisational learning to the wider concept of social
learning.
First book to consider citizens playing a role in the science-policy
interface to help formulate durable responses to sustainability
challenges
Discusses all aspects to enhance the connectivity of actors in the
sustainable water management field, with three pilot case studies
showing how citizens and stakeholders can be engaged early and
effectively in the river basins and coastal waters planning processes
Provides tips and recommendations for the transferability of the
approach in different coastal areas of Europe and beyond.
The EC 7th Research Framework Program funded project AWARE
engaged a panel of randomly selected citizens living in three different
coastal areas of Europe in a pilot experience of knowledge
brokerage with water scientists and decision makers focused on
coastal waters quality. Results and lessons learned from the project
are summarized in this volume, and recommendations are made
for this pilots replication and transferability to different coastal areas
and sustainable water management tasks - and beyond to other
sustainability research and policy issues. This book is a must-read for
water managers and policy makers looking to effectively organize
citizen and stakeholder participation in river basin and coastal water
planning, as required by the EU Water Framework Directive.
Sustainable Water Ecosystems Management in Europe provides useful
recommendations for organising effective participation of citizens in
the science and policy dialogue, promoting a collective awareness of
the plans and actions needed to protect the water environment and
ensure sustainable use of water resources

Meeting the Water Reform
Challenge
Authors Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and
Development (OECD)
Water policies around the world are in
urgent need of reform. Despite
improvements in some sectors and
countries, progress on meeting national,
regional and international goals for managing
and securing access to water for all has been
uneven. Rallying policymakers around a
positive water reform agenda needs to be a
high priority and calls for strong political
commitment and leadership.
This report on Meeting the Water Reform Challenge brings together
key insights from recent OECD work and identifies the priority areas
where governments need to focus their reform efforts. It calls for
governments to focus on getting the basics of water policy right.
Sustainable financing, effective governance, and coherence between

Water Resources
Integrated Water Resource
Management in Brazil
Editor: Carsten Lorz
The complex interactions between water
resources, land-use change and water
technologies are a major issue in many
emerging countries of Southern America.
Usable water resources are affected by
natural conditions, such as, strong seasonal
contrasts and high climatic variability, and
rapid changes of land use and cover that is
caused by the dramatic expansion of
agricultural land and urbanization processes.
So far, the effects of the changing climate have had minor effects
on water resources. Although regional data is rather scarce, global
climate models predict substantial changes in climatic conditions. A
further pressure is that demand for water supply and waste water,
both in terms of amount and spatial expansion, is increasing rapidly
in some regions due to higher population densities caused by
natural population growth and migration as well as higher per capita

Integrated Water Resource Management in Brazil aims to present
the results of the joint project IWAS/AGUA DF which deals with
problems, causes and solutions in water supply in scope of integrated
water resource management in western Central Brazil. The basic
idea of the IWRM approach to be presented is to show how
natural conditions and human interference are interacting and how
technologies as well as concepts might help to manage such water
resource systems in a sustainable way.

Water Services Management and
Governance
Lessons for a Sustainable Future
Editors: Tapio Katko, Petri S. Juuti, and Klaas Schwartz
Water Services Management and Governance
focuses on water services (water supply,
wastewater services) and deals with
connections between water resources and
services and water resources. It covers water
supply mainly in urban communities,
sanitation and pollution control and water
resources and their linkages to water
services.
This book is divided in to four key sections

relating to governance frameworks, technology and socio-ecological
interactions, government and governance, and long terms policies.
The chapters analyse the complexity of the water services sector
based on a historical analysis of developments within the sector.
The underlying conviction is that only by understanding past trends,
processes and developments can the current situation in the water
services be understood. Only through this understanding can policies
for sustainable water services in the future be formulated. The four
key sections relate to governance frameworks, technology and socio-
ecological interactions, government and governance, and long terms
policies.
Water Services Management and Governance raises awareness that an
understanding of the past is a necessity to explore potential, probable
and preferable futures. It is an essential basis for water sector reforms
in any country, region or community. The book is written for experts
in water utilities, ministries, municipalities, NGOs, donor agencies,
private companies and regulators; as well as students and researchers
in water policy and governance, and the management of water
resources, services and infrastructure.
