Antebellum Flipbook
State Standard: 3-4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of life in antebellum period, the
causes and effects of the Civil War, and the impact of Reconstruction in South Carolina.
Indicator: 3-4.1 Compare the economic conditions for various classes of people in South
Carolina, including the elite, the middle class, the lower class, the independent farmers, and
the enslaved and free African Americans.

Learning Objective: The student will be able to create a flipbook about the antebellum period including
details from each social class.

Essential Question: How did daily life differ for the various classes of people in South Carolina?

Assessment: The student will complete flipbook sections about the elite class of the antebellum south.
The teacher will check each section for four correct main points under each heading and record in the
gradebook and anything chart. *Model flipchart included

Activities/Procedures:
Opening: The teacher will ask questions about Pink and Say to activate prior knowledge about
the Civil War.
The teacher will give students premade flipbooks. The class will read the text aloud from reading
sheets. The teacher will have students pick details out of the text to include in the flipbook. The
teacher will model the creation of the flipbook using the elmo cam. The students will cover
information for the elite class. The teacher will show pictures of the plantation home from
textbook.
Closing: The students will draw pictures for each social class. The students will turn in their
flipbooks.

Accommodations:
ESL: The teacher will define uncommon words or phrases. The teacher will break down longer words
into more easily spelled segments. The teacher will model the creation of the flipbook.
Special Education: The teacher will break down longer words into more easily spelled segments. The
teacher will model the creation of the flipbook.
Early Finishers: Students may try an activity from the challenge box, read a book, or take an AR test.

Materials: Promethean board, Elmo cam, flipbooks (pre-made), coloring utensils, textbook, reading
sheets, pictures

Questioning:
1) Create a skit representing one of the social classes. Early Finishers task (Creating)

Lesson 2, 4, & 5 Sample Assessment
As the students complete the flipbook, the teacher will check daily to make sure students have
completed the task. A final grade will be given upon completion.
