Sweet Claras Quilt State Standard: 3-4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of life in antebellum period, the causes and effects of the Civil War, and the impact of Reconstruction in South Carolina. Indicator: 3-4.2 Summarize the development of slavery in antebellum South Carolina including the invention of the cotton gin and the subsequent expansion of and economic dependence on slavery.
Learning Objective: The student will be able to write about the importance of secret messages in allowing slaves to escape to freedom.
Essential Question: How did the enslaved of South Carolina escape to freedom?
Assessment: The student will complete a 3, 2, 1 activity. The teacher will check for correctness and record in gradebook and anything chart.
Activities/Procedures: Opening: The teacher will ask the students if they remember learning about the uses of Gullah music. The teacher will relate the quilt discussed in the Gullah activity to the one in the book they will read today. Activities: The teacher will read Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt. The class will discuss the use of the quilt in the book and the trials of escaping to freedom. Closing: The students will complete a three, two, one activity. They will list 3 difficulties slaves faced in escaping, 2 items they used to help them escape, and 1 question.
Accommodations: ESL: The teacher will stop periodically to explain sections of the book. The teacher will point out dialect and vocabulary words. Early Finishers: The students may choose an assignment from the social studies challenge box, read silently, finish work, or take an AR test.
Materials: Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt, pencil and paper

Lesson 7 Assessment The student will write about 3 difficulties slaves faced in escaping, 2 items or strategies they used to escape, and one question. The teacher will grade for accuracy of the first five items and for one question being asked. The teacher will record grade in the gradebook and anything chart.
