Follow the Drinking Gourd State Standard: 3-4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of life in antebellum period, the causes and effects of the Civil War, and the impact of Reconstruction in South Carolina. Indicator: 3-4.2 Summarize the development of slavery in antebellum South Carolina including the invention of the cotton gin and the subsequent expansion of and economic dependence on slavery.
Learning Objective: The student will be able to understand the importance of secret messages in allowing slaves to escape to freedom.
Essential Question: How did the enslaved of South Carolina escape to freedom?
Assessment: The student will write a journal entry about life as a slave. The teacher will check for correctness and record in gradebook/anything chart.
Activities/Procedures: Opening: The teacher will ask the students if they remember learning about the uses of Gullah music. The Gullah music sometimes gave directions for people. The teacher will pass around a gourd and explain what a drinking gourd is. Activities: The class will listen to Follow the Drinking Gourd video. The teacher will introduce Follow the Drinking Gourd by explaining the term drinking gourd. The teacher will also explain the background of the song/book which was mentioned in the video. The teacher will read Follow the Drinking Gourd. The class will discuss the trials of escaping to freedom. Closing: The class will discuss the methods and difficulties of escape. They will list, as a class, the qualities of a journal entry. The students will write a journal entry describing life of a slave trying to escape.
Accommodations: ESL: The teacher will stop periodically to explain sections of the book. The teacher will point out dialect and vocabulary words. Special Education: The teacher will stop periodically to explain sections of the book. The teacher will point out dialect and vocabulary words. Early Finishers: The students may choose an assignment from the social studies challenge box, read silently, finish work, or take an AR test.

Lesson 8 Assessment The student will write a journal entry, pretending that they are a slave (who can illegally write) who is escaping to freedom. The teacher will look for 5 accurate details relating to runaway slaves. The teacher will record grade in gradebook and in an anything chart.
