Title I Feel Good

Creator: Triplett, Mary Ann matriple@access.k12.wv.us

Source: Secondary PBL Project, 2008-2009
Project Idea: Students will obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services as well as use that information
to make appropriate health-related decisions.
Entry Event: The teacher can launch the entry event or to make it more authentic, consider having the school nurse, the
nurse practitioner from the wellness center, or a local doctor launch the project with health statistics pertinent to your
region or state, such as the following. Heart disease, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory diseases, the three leading
causes of death, accounted for 55.3% of West Virginia resident deaths in 2005. Deaths due to chronic lower
respiratory diseases, increased stroke mortality decreased 0.6%. Diabetes mellitus deaths decreased 10.6%, while the
number of reported deaths due to pneumonia and influenza decreased 1.0% from 2004 to 2005. Alzheimers disease,
now the seventh leading cause of death in the Mountain State for the third year in a row, increased by 23 deaths or
4.5% (Retrieved from http://www.wvdhhr.org/bph/oehp/hsc/pubs/vital05/summary.htm on March 30, 2009).
As a family member interested in health and wellness, you must establish and monitor your personal and
family health goals as well as understand the state, national, and international public health and safety issues. As an
individual, present your personal and family health goals to your family physician or school-based health provider.
Your individual research project will be evaluated by you, your family, and if possible your family physician using
the Modified WV Writing Assessment Rubric.
As a board member of the Office of Global Health Affairs, your goal is to obtain, interpret, and understand
basic health information and services, such as preventive physical and mental health measures, including proper diet,
nutrition, exercise, risk avoidance and stress reduction and using such information, make appropriate health-related
decisions that are health enhancing. With your group, present your findings about how preventive health measures
can help one make appropriate health-related decisions to the Public Health Service Operating Divisions.
Presentations can be made to the Public Health Service Operating Division panel in the classroom, during family
nights, during local health fairs, or recording the presentations to be played in the waiting rooms of local health care
providers.) Your group media presentation will be evaluated by you, your family, and the Public Health Service
Operating Divisions using the Presentation Rubric.

Manage the
Process:
To ensure the targeted learning occurs, the teacher is constantly monitoring student progress toward the goals
to make sure students are acquiring and applying the intended learning outcomes. The teacher checks with each
individual and each group on a regular basis as well as reads each individuals learning log. Students choose a health
issue to investigate as an individual and present a research project detailing their findings as well as their personal
health goals.
To group students for the group project, the teacher will group students who investigated similar or related
health issues. Each group will share the information they gained in their individual research as well as additional
research identifying the preventive lifestyle habits one can establish to enhance his/her health as related to the topic.

School-based and community-based adults will be notified about the project before it is started, so they
realize what students are doing when they solicit information from them for their projects. Students will have access
to the school nurse and the school-based wellness center staff throughout the project. Also, school-based and
community-based adults will be invited to be on the panel to which students present their multi-media presentations.
