The Presentation
of the Lord
February 2, 2014

Simeon surprised Mary and Joseph
with his declaration that their baby
was the long-awaited Messiah. They
of course knew the truth about their
Son's identity and mission. But to hear
someone else announce it was the
amazing part. Anna too spoke about
the child as "the redemption of
Jerusalem," thus adding another
mystical assurance that Jesus was in
fact the Savior. These events that took
place during the Presentation in the
Temple can remind us about the
important role of the members of the
believing community. Like Simeon
and Anna, we are meant to encourage
one another, and to announce the
Gospel to others with courage and
conviction. When we are rooted in
prayer, and attuned to the Holy Spirit,
we too can be effective instruments of
God's power. Then, amazing things
can happen! We become the channels
through which God' s truth is
proclaimed, and through which his
love and healing, comfort and
compassion, are given to other people.

Dear Friends,

I offer my personal invitation to Young
Adults (ages 18-39) to join me for fel-
lowship twice each month. Supper Sat-
urday takes place on the second Satur-
day of every month after our 4:30 pm
Mass. Come to Mass and right after
meet up in the parking lot. Then we
decide where to go. The other monthly gathering is
Coffee and Catechism, which takes place every first
Saturday of the month at 10:00 am. Watch for details at
the Young Adult Facebook group called East County
Young Adults. For Young Adult activities currently
scheduled around the Diocese check out page 4 of this
bulletin and regularly visit www.YAMSD.org!

To the rest of the adults in the parish, please encourage
your Young Adult children, grandchildren, nephews,
and nieces to take a look at what's going on and take a
chance on engaging their faith.

On another topic, information about the Bishops An-
nual Catholic Appeal is coming soon. The proceeds of
this appeal fund critical services in the Diocese of San
Diego that serve Christs mission among us.

In preparation for discerning the amount of your house-
hold gift please start now and pray for the Holy Spirit to
guide your support for the work of the Church in our
diocese. To help you with this discernment our Bishop of
the Diocese of San Diego, Cirilo Flores, offers you the
following prayer:

The staff of our Santa Sophia Acad-
emy Preschool believe a childs work
is play and that at a young age chil-
dren learn best engaging in hands on
learning experiences. We provide ex-
periences in the areas of math, science, music, cook-
ing, art, dramatic play, language and literature.
If you have a child age 2 years and nine months, (and
fully toilet trained) or children who are not ready for
Kindergarten and are considering Preschool, please
make note of the following dates.

Sophia Preschool Families.
Feb 10 - Registration begins for siblings of stu-
dents currently attending Santa Sophia Academy.

HELP WANTED - The Society of St.
Vincent de Paul food pantry at Santa

part of an organization committed to feeding the
poor, contact Paul Marquie at (619)916-9680 or stop
by the pantry.

I wasnt sure whether my grand-
daughter had learned her colors, so I
decided to test her. I pointed to ran-
dom objects throught the house and
asked her what color they were. She
always answered correctly, but it was fun for me, so I
continued. After awhile, she started to walk away.
When she got to the door, she turned around and
said, Grandma, I think you should try to figure
some of these out on your own!

What we can learn from a dog: Avoid biting when
a simple growl will suffice.

GERMAN STUDENTS NEED HELP

HELP IS NEEDED for housing for Kolping Youth
Camp students (ages 18+) visiting San Diego
this summer, Aug 9-30. Kolping International,
holds 40-43 youth camps all over the world each
year. These camps involve young people from
Germany who are not necessarily Kolping mem-
bers nor Catholics. During their stay they will:

Seek to make friends and enjoy cultural ex-
change
Be exposed to social justice issues in families
and communities
Promote an ecumenism spirit among the youth
to promote the common good
work at Fr. Joe's Village in downtown San
Diego to serve lunch to the homeless.

Fr. John Bosco has helped with the Kolping
Youth Camps both here in Southern California
and in Africa. He is looking for six parish families
to provide accommodations for the youth. Stay-
ing with a host family, is another experience for
them to see how family life looks here in the U.S.

At a minimum, they have to be two together for
support. The sleeping arrangements are made by
the host family, sharing rooms with children of a
host family is fine. Transportation and food is
taken care of by Kolping. To get more info and to
volunteer email jbosco@santasophia.org or call
Father Bosco at the parish office at (619)463-
6629.

Santa Sophia Troop 355 Scouts Collect Food
for St. Vincent de Paul Pantry
Next Weekend After All Masses
Every year, Boy Scouts all across San Diego and Imperial
Counties collect food to help fill the needs of those in our
communities. Troop 355 Boy Scouts honors this duty by
collecting canned goods and other non-perishable foods
at Santa Sophia. Food collection will be after Masses
on Sat, Feb 9, at the Santa Sophia Academy picnic
tables. The food collected will be given to Santa Sophias
St. Vincent de Paul Pantry.

Last year, SVDP served over 170,000 lbs. of food to over 12,000 living in our community. But food costs have
increased, often the food banks shelves are bare and there has been an increase in those applying for assis-
tance. Thank you for your support! For more info contact Jim at (619)248-4905.
