Introduction
TH E F U N D A M E N TA L geochemical and mineralogic processes in-
volved in the supergene oxidation, leaching, and enrichment
of base and precious metal ore deposits have been understood
for at least a century (Emmons, 1901; Kemp, 1905). Early
recognition of the economic implications of the weathering of
Cu-Fe sulfide minerals in dry cordilleran environments led to
the establishment of Gratons secondary enrichment investi-
gation in 1913 (Graton, 1913) and is exemplified by W.H.
Emmons classic 1913 and 1917 U.S. Geological Survey
