-2014- CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS
Introduction
Information technology plays an important role to education. New and emerging technologies challenge the traditional process of teaching and learning and the way things are managed and controlled. Easy worldwide communication provides instant access to a vast array of data, challenging assimilation and assessment skills. It is indeed important that people in any organization, establishment and in the academe especially the administrators to be aware of the functions and benefits of using the information technology.
Information technology helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information. Technology has opened up new markets, new products, new services and efficient delivery channels for the banking industry. Online electronics banking, mobile banking and internet banking are just a few examples. Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology is an educational institution that responds to the fast changing demands of the Information Technology. The demand for computer specialists prompted the institution to offer courses in Information Technology.
The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) program prepares students to be IT professionals who are able to perform installation, operation, development, maintenance and administration of computer applications. The goal of the program is to gear up students as "information technologists" who can assist individuals and organizations in solving problems using information technology (IT) techniques.
The BSIT program equips students with the basic ability to conceptualize, design and implement software applications. It also provides experience in the development of office support (word processing, spreadsheet, database and accounting), intranet and internet and specialized professional software (multi-media, website development and eCommerce). It also offers background in mathematical and computing principles.
It is the main task of the college to develop a curriculum in the IT field that caters to the needs of the industry by providing graduates who are globally competitive and equipped with the necessary IT knowledge and skills.
One of the objectives of the institution is to determine the employability status of the BS Information Technology graduates locally and abroad. The management also aims to provide the industry with the graduates who are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills.
This tracer study is a follow up study to determine the employment status of BS Information Technology Graduates of NEUST from 2001-2002. It determines and assesses the effectiveness and the relevance of BSIT curriculum, knowledge, skills and work values acquired by the graduates to their employment; identify the personal and professional characteristics and job placement of BS Information Technology graduates and the school related factors associated with their employment. The findings of the study served as the basis of the researcher to improve, update or enhance the curriculum of BSIT program to make this more responsive to the needs of fast changing technology and employment demands.
Statement of the Problem The general objective of this tracer study is to gather relevant information as to the employability of the graduates in the NEUST College of Information and Communication Technology graduate from School Year 2001 to 2005.
Specifically, this tracer study aims to:
1. Describe the graduates in terms of 1.1 age 1.2 civil status 1.3 sex 1.4 residence 1.5 major field 1.6 year graduated and academic performance
2. To determine the graduates professional skills, professional examinations passed, and reasons for taking the course;
3. To determine the trainings and advance studies attended by the graduates after finishing college;
4. Determine the industry classification of the companies where they are employed, job position, monthly salary range, job requirements and the waiting time before they landed on a job.
Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study aims will cover the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology graduates whether working abroad or in locally-based companies who graduated from AY 2001 to 2002 only to allow the graduates enough time to find employment. It aims to cover the graduates in local residence and those who are residing abroad.
Significance of the Study
An institution like NEUST professes to primarily provide advanced instruction, professional training in arts, science and technology, education and other related fields, as its Mission Statement which aims to offer quality education programs to its constituents. It is therefore relevant for the college to determine whether it has helped the graduates become productive members of the society. In any instance, the College has investigated the factors that significantly affect graduates employability given todays conditions.
This investigation is crucial to the growth of an institution because if there is no conduct of an evaluation of outcomes of the educational process there will be any benchmark unto which the basis of future developments can be based upon. Schools alumni are the best proof of its capability to effectively educate.
Conceptual Framework Using the illustration of the Conceptual Framework it can be asserted that a student gained many experiences during his stay in school. Students cultivate themselves to become productive citizens of their community after graduation. Following this line of thought, if NEUST succeeds in properly educating the students who are enrolled in the different programs especially in Information Technology program they will be able to secure a high quality of education for these students, thus providing better chances for them to land a high paying job.
