Setting out of center line The center line of the road will be set-out to ensure that the alignment is followed as per the drawing. Center pegs will be placed at 25 meters interval, which will be used to re- establish the center line. After re-establishment of the center line, ranging rods or stings will be used to check for the straightness and smoothness of curves, if any. This exercise will be conducted before commencement of ant works.
The tools used for this exercise will be: level instrument, ranging rods, strings, tape measures (30m and 50m), bush pegs and water proof markers.
Setting out of chainage pegs To establish an accurate correlation between the drawing and the actual site, permanent chainage pegs (reference stations) will be placed along the road at intervals as determined by the supervisor. ReferenceTBMs will be installed on permanent features like rocks or trees and placed at 100m intervals shall be used as semi- permanent features. Intermediate bush pegs will then be placed at 25m intervals. To ensure good visibility at 10 and 15 m distances, oil paint shall be used to write on the pegs, (black letters on white background)
Site clearance (Bush clearing, Grass Cutting, tree and stamp removal) Bush clearing, grass cutting, tree and stamp removal works will be executed by use of manpower with hand held tools and in instances, when found necessary, an appropriate power tool may be employed. All bushes will be removed out of the specified road width area and disposed to an approved location. Where and when found to be necessary, with the approval, fire will be used to destroy material. This will only be done in controlled heaps to reduce the risk of fire spreading to adjoining lands.
Grabbing and stripping of top soil. All roots of grasses, bushes and other vegetation will be removed from the cleared width using manpower with the help of hand held tools like hoes and pick axes. We propose that in cases where topsoil is found to contain much organic matter, with approval, it will also be stripped. This activity will be conducted before the start of earth works. Traffic management Alternate routes and by-passes will be provided for traffic outside the construction area. However, for sections in built up areas, road works shall be constructed in a one-lane work zone following the supervisors approval. Scarification, Dozing and compaction Scarification of the sections will be done using man power with hand held to a depth of 200mm this will be done for all trial sections concurrently. To ensure homogeneity of the soil, the scarified material (for the entire road) will be mixed and broken down using a towed grader. Oversize materials will be picked and raked out. Using wheel barrows, the material will be heaped for every section and the first 100mm layer spread uniformly along the test section. The material will be dozed/watered with chemical depending of the results of the in-situ moisture content tests using hand held watering cans. The material will then be compacted to a specified density and shaped using a pedestrian compactor and towed grader. This procedure will be repeated for the 100mm layer with approval from the supervisor. Dozing rates from the supervisor acquired and trials will be conducted to determine the rate/speed while walking needed to achieve the rate with hand held watering cans. If found necessary, depending on the results from the watering cans, a towed water bowser will be used. Health and Safety Health and safety requirements will be adhered to during the course of work. An on-call nurse will be provided and necessary safety gear will be provided for the workmen.
