Fire Hydrant Specification (4-1/2 Main Valve)

Fire hydrants purchased or installed shall meet or exceed all applicable requirements and tests of
ANSI and the latest revisions of AWWA Standard C50! Fire hydrants shall meet all test
requirements and be listed by "nder#riters $aboratories Inc! Fire hydrants shall meet all test
requirements and have full approval of Factory %utual! Fire hydrants shall meet the follo#in&
requirements
'! Fire hydrants shall be rated for a #or(in& pressure of 50 )si&! *'+5 ()a,!
! Fire hydrants shall be of the compression type- openin& a&ainst the pressure and closin& #ith
the pressure!
3. Fire hydrants shall have a minimum ./'01 main valve openin& and a minimum inside
lo#er0upper barrel diameter *I!2!, of 31 to assure maximum flo# performance! )ressure loss
at '-000 4)% shall not exceed the follo#in& values5

.! Fire hydrants shall be three/#ay in desi&n- havin& one pumper no66le *si6e as specified, and
t#o /'01 hose no66le*s,! No66le thread type shall be as specified by the enduser! No66les shall
thread countercloc(#ise into hydrant barrel utili6in& 7o1 rin& seals! A suitable no66le loc( shall
be in place to prevent inadvertent no66le removal!
5! 8he bonnet assembly shall provide an oil reservoir and lubrication system that automatically
circulates lubricant to all stem threads and bearin& surfaces each time the hydrant is operated!
8his lubrication system shall be sealed from the #ater#ay and any external contaminants by use
of 7o 7 rin& seals! An anti/friction #asher shall be in place above the thrust collar to further
minimi6e operatin& torque! 8he oil reservoir shall be factory filled #ith a lo# viscosity- F2A
approved non/toxic oil lubricant #hich #ill remain fluid throu&h a temperature ran&e of 930

3! 8he operatin& nut shall be a one piece desi&n- manufactured of AS8% ;/5<. bron6e! It shall
be penta&on0square in shape and the nut dimensions shall be as specified by the enduser! 8he
operatin& nut shall be affixed to the bonnet by means of an AS8% ;/5<. bron6e hold do#n nut!
8he hold do#n nut shall be threaded into the bonnet in such a manner as to prevent accidental
disen&a&ement durin& the openin& cycle of the hydrant! 8he use of Allen head set scre#s as a
means of retention is unacceptable! A resilient #eather seal shall be incorporated into the hold
do#n nut- for the purpose of protectin& the operatin& mechanism from the elements!
+! 8he direction of the openin& shall be as specified by the enduser ! An arro# shall be cast on
the bonnet flan&e to indicate the specified openin& direction!

<! 8he hydrant bonnet shall be attached to the upper barrel by not less than ei&ht bolts and nuts
and sealed by an 7o1 rin&!
=! >ydrants shall be a 7traffic/model1 havin& upper and lo#er barrels ?oined at the &round line
by a separate and brea(able 7s#ivel1 flan&e providin& @30

shall be located under the upper barrel flan&e to prevent the se&ments from fallin& into the lo#er
barrel #hen the hydrant is struc(! 8he pressure seal bet#een the barrels shall be an 7o1 rin&! 8he
proper &round line shall be cast clearly on the lo#er barrel and shall provide not less than '<1 of
clearance from the centerline of the lo#est no66le to the &round!
'0! 8he operatin& stem shall consist of t#o pieces- not less than ' '0.1 diameter *excludin&
threaded or machined areas, and shall be connected by a stainless steel safety couplin&! 8he
safety couplin& shall have an inte&ral internal stop to prevent the couplin& from slidin& do#n
into the lo#er barrel #hen the hydrant is struc(! Scre#s- pins- bolts- or fasteners used in
con?unction #ith the stem couplin&s shall also be stainless steel! 8he top of the lo#er stem shall
be recessed 1 belo# the face of the safety flan&e to prevent #ater hammer in the event of a 7
drive over1 #here a vehicle tire mi&ht accidentally depress the main valve!
''! 8he lo#er barrel shall be an inte&rally cast unit! 8he use of threaded on or mechanically
attached flan&es is deemed unacceptable! 8he hydrant bury depth shall be clearly mar(ed on the
hydrant lo#er barrel!
'! Composition of the main valve shall be a molded rubber havin& a durometer hardness of =5
:0/ 5 and shall be reversible in desi&n to provide a spare in place! )lastic *polyurethane, main
valves are unacceptable! 8he main valve shall have a cross section not less than '1!
'@! >ydrants shall be equipped #ith *, t#o drain valves #hich drain the barrel #hen the hydrant
is closed and seal shut #hen the hydrant is opened! 8hese drain valves shall be an inte&ral part of
the one piece bron6e upper valve plate! 8hey shall operate #ithout the use of sprin&s- to&&les-
tubes- levers or other intricate synchroni6in& mechanisms!
'.! 8he upper valve plate- seat rin& and drain rin& *shoe bushin&, must be AS8% ;/5<. bron6e
and #or( in con?unction to form an all bron6e drain #ay! A minimum of t#o *, internal and t#o
*, external drain openin&s are required! 2rains ported throu&h an iron shoe must be bron6e
lined!
'5! 8he bron6e seat rin& shall thread into a bron6e drain rin& *or shoe bushin&, providin& a
bron6e to bron6e connection! Seat rin&s shall be 7o1 rin& pressure sealed

'3! 8he shoe inlet si6e and connection type shall be as specified *flan&ed- %A- etc!,- havin&
ample bloc(in& pads for sturdy settin& and the %A connection must have t#o strappin& lu&s to
secure the hydrant to pipin&! A minimum of six bolts and nuts is required to fasten the shoe to
the lo#er barrel!
'+! 8he interior of the shoe includin& the lo#er valve plate and stem cap nut shall have a
protective coatin& that meets the requirements of AWWA C/550! If a stem cap nut is utili6ed- it
must be loc(ed in place by a stainless steel loc( #asher or similar non/corrosive device that #ill
prevent the cap nut from bac(in&/off durin& normal use!
'=! >ydrants shall be #arranted by the manufacturer a&ainst defects in materials or #or(manship
for a period of ten years *'0, from the date of manufacture! 8he manufacturin& facility for the
hydrant must have current ISB certification!
0! >ydrants shall be %ueller Super Centurion 50 or approved equal!
Failure to comply #ith any of these above requirements is sufficient cause for re?ection of
proposed hydrants!
8he city reserves the ri&ht to accept only those materials #hich are in full compliance #ith these
specification and deemed most advanta&eous to its interests!
