TASK 2: (1) WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT
DISCUSS THE APPLICATION OF ANY ONE OF THE THEORIES OF LITERARY CRITICISM IN TWO SHORT STORIES OF YOUR CHOICE.
12
According to Virginia Woolf, Literature is strewn with the wreckage of men who have minded beyond reason the opinions of others. As far as I am concerned, one can give opinions or feedback in order to justify a point. There are no boundaries. Literary critics may sometimes challenge the ideas and values of literature. The two short stories that I have chosen are Everything Arranged and A Question of Dowry which were written by the same write named Siew Yue Killingley. Both short stories are written by Malaysian writers. The theory of literary criticism I have chosen is cultural criticism. Literary criticism is a study in case of discerning or evaluating a literary piece whether it is a novel, poem, play or any other literary works written by the authors. The criticism or analysis of a specific culture can be defined as a term named cultural criticism. People who criticize specific cultures are often referred to as cultural critics. According to Smith, ed., 1992: 312-313, cultural criticism makes the term culture refer to popular and classic culture. It breaks down the boundary between high and low culture, and discovers the political reason why a cultural product is more valued than others. Based on the short story, Everythings Arranged, the story is all a love story of young Ceylonese couple. The story tells about a Ceylonese girl named Rukumani who have secret affair with a Ceylonese boy named Devanayagam while studying in at University. At the beginning, their families do not know about their relationship. When Rukumani and Devanayagam went for a long term vacation, while their secret affair discovered by their parents. Rukumani told her parents about her relationship. Rukumanis father wrote a letter to Devanayagam and thus their marriage that is arranged being called off. This is because accepting that falling in love as a big sin and only arranged marriage is allowed. 13
The short story, Everythings Arranged emphasizes that arranged marriage is practiced by the Indian communities during that time. This story shows the Indian culture that believes marriage as a spiritual thing. Love marriages are still alien to Indian cultural. The girls should not be in love before marriage. The textual evidence is that story, Rukumanis mother starts as soon as Johny has gone out of the front door. Young people nowadays have no shame. My mother would have sent me out of the house if I had entertained a boy friend as freely as that. Based on that, it tells me that being in love is a taboo in her family as she criticizes love. Besides that, another textual evidence is that Cant you see that Im trying to arrange a good, respectable marriage for you? told by her mother. At this point, it shows that her parents do not understand Rukumanis feelings and arranged against her own wish. Thus it shows that they prefer arranged marriage which is highly considered and respected by Indian and Ceylonese families as it is considered as a dignity and a symbol of family honour. It contradicts to modern culture as nowadays people can find their own spouses. Apart from that, the cultural criticism in the short story Everythings Arranged is emphasized in the perspective of modern versus traditional Indian culture. Rukumani is exposed to new world with different culture or way of life as she studies at University Malaya. This brings a fear in Rukumanis mother that she cannot control her daughter when she grows up while studying in University. The line can be seen through this line in the story is Especially when someone likes Girlie, so pretty, going to get university degree and all, better to fix everything while still possible to control. Once they grow older, just try to control and see. Based on the short story, A Questions of Dowry emphasizes on dowry which is the major compulsory material in those days life. Indian girl named Sivasothie engages to a young man named Thiruchelvam that arranged by the family. Sivasothies parents agree to prepare the 14
dowry whereby a sum of twenty thousand and a necklace. Then, the conflict arises when Sivasothies father Mr. Ramachandran tells his wife that they cannot afford to give the dowry they agreed. As a result, Thiruchelvam rejects the marriage with Mr. Ramachandrans daughter because couldnt give the dowry promised. Sivasothie feels sad because she has to forget him to become her husband after while she liked him so much. The cultural criticism is portrayed by the acceptance of dowry as a major compulsory material in India culture. This is clearly proven in the text where Twenty thousand dollars is not to be scoffed at- thats more than I can say what Thangathurai gave his daughter when our son married her It is clearly proven that he bridegrooms family demands twenty thousand dollars and a necklace as a dowry in order to engage and marry Sivasothie to Thiruchelvam. In addition, during that time, they ties to the cultures and traditions of Indian. Mr. Ramachandran takes efficient efforts to settle the dowry as promised before. The marriage of Sivasothie and Thiruchelvam is arranged by Mr and Mrs. Ramachandran. It is proved when they arrange their daughter marriage can be seen through this line in the story " Well, commented Mrs. Ramachandran stoically, theres more than one doctor in our community, and its up to you, Ramachandran, to do your duty as a father. " The culture and practice in an Indian family on how they arranged their daughter marriage. To sum up, both short stories clearly show the cultural criticism that develops by the Indian community. In my opinion, parents should not hold to the culture fully, and thus they have to understand the feelings of their child. This will bring someone to build a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, dowry should not be seen as a source of marriage. This is because money and intelligence are not the assurance of happy marriage. 15

REFLECTION

REFLECTION First of all, I am very glad that I managed to complete this assignment by the time given. There are a few problems that I went through while doing this task. Firstly, I am not fully clear about the assignment given. However, through the briefing and guidance given by my respected lecturer, Mr. Puveneswaran Karuppiah, I managed to complete this Literature in English coursework. There are so many things that I would like to share about this coursework which was a great experience for all of us. There were some challenges that I faced in completing the project. Firstly, I had a quite number of assignments to be completed. I felt stressed because I might be lacking of time to complete them. Therefore, to avoid doing tasks at the eleventh hour, I prepared a timetable. I planned it wisely so that I could complete the other assignments as well. Secondly, I went through some hard times to find the textual evidence which needs critical thinking skills to support my points. In order to develop critical thinking skills, I realized that I need to negotiate different points of view, consider a variety of perspectives and try to analyze how different aspects of a literary text fit in with each other to create a design and world of its own. The experiences that I gained from this project have helped me to improve myself. Now, I have a huge knowledge on the theories of literary criticism especially cultural criticism compared to before starting this assignment. Besides that. I can analyse poems according to their form, structure and features. This assignment helped me to become a good researcher; I searched for more information regarding the importance of child development from various sources such as books, websites, 23
articles and etc. Through my experience, I gain knowledge on how to look for a reliable source as my references. Those information gathered, help me to have a wide knowledge on it which would be helping me to handle my future students. To sum up, after having a hard and difficult time doing this assignment, I came to realize that actually this assignment have opened my eyes and given me a birds eye view of the world. All the knowledge that I gain from this assignment will help me to guide myself and my future students to become a better person one day. I feel very proud because I can analyze about the literary criticism from my own research. I hope it will be very helpful and useful for me in my teaching career in the future. Lastly, I would like to thank those who had helped me directly and indirectly to complete this assignment on time. Their assistance is greatly appreciated. Prepared by, NALINI D/O BALAN 1 PISMP TESL
