Windward Islands Evangelism ^^

Box 824 - Kingstown St. Vincent, West Indies

Bob and Jackie Muter Jeff and Jane Robertson
WINDWARD ISLANDS EVANGELISM Is a multi-faceted program dedicated to evangelism of the
English-speaking Caribbean/West Indies through West Indian Christians. Both the Muters and the
Robertsons have lived in three West Indian cultures - Jamaica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent, their present
home. This experience has convinced them that the West Indian church is the best means of evangeliz
ing the Caribbean peoples, but they are sadly lackingin trained leadership, and the necessary training
opportunities and materials. The program In general consists of the foilowing ministries;
WINDWARD ISLANDS SCHOOL OF EVANGELISM in Arnos Vale, St. Vincent. A Bible college
DESIGNED FOR the West Indies and LOCATED IN the West Indies results in more trained leaders
returning to their own culture to work for the Lord.
New church evengellsm. The present effort, Arnos Vale Church of Christ, St. Vincent, is now
meeting with approximately 80 to 100 people in attendance. Black River Church of Christ, Jamaica,
now has a WISE graduate as minister and Is stabilizing and growing. BOTH CHURCHES are in
desperate need of a building to enhance growth and development. BOTH have students in training at
WISE.
Established church assistance. Curriculum materials, both VBS and Sunday School, are provided
for at least fifteen churches In the three countries. We encourage and assist with these programs where
possible, provide leadership training when requested, and assist financiallyin occasional circumstances.
Opening of new fields and areas of work. Recruitment of students from countries without churches
of Christ in the true New Testament pattern is underway; foundational work for new church establish
ment in Jamaica is also being undertaken with Vincent Graham. Graduates of WISE provide potential
for such work not previously possible.
WINDWARD ISLANDS SCHOOL OF EVANGELISM
'-n
The Windward Islands School of Evangelism is the Carib
bean/West indies' own Bible College for Christian young peo
ple. !t is a iwo-year, five-term, specially designed program to
provide trained leaders for West Indian churches and
evangelistic efforts. The School (see picture, top left) is located
on the island of St. Vincent, a short hop from Barbados.
The 23 students of Spring term. 1983, came from Jamaica,
Guyana and St. Vincent, and represented twelve different
churches. (See picture, middle left.) All come with the recom
mendation of their church leaders and with a deep desire to
know God and to be able to lead others to Him. Most have a
commitment to return to their home churches to minister, and
others desire to work to establish Christ's church where it has
not yet been introduced.
The curriculum of the School Is designedfor completestudy
of God's Word, as well as methods of communicating it to
others. English has recently been added to fill an important
need. During the course of study, opportunity to 'practice'
these skills Is available in the local church and occasionally
through internship with a church in another country of the
West Indies.
Fellowship is precious at WISE, as we live together in the
dorms, share in the special events of the church, such as the
Sweethearts' Banquet (this year FOUR WISE engagements
were announced!), as well as the annual PREACHING AND
TEACHING CONFERENCE of the School. And there are the
Friday night "socials" and Sunday noon meals for students and
faculty together.
The faculty of WISE consists of: (It. tort., lower left): Simeon
Norton, Jeff and Jane Robertson, Pearl Dobson, Jackie and
Bob Muter.

A WORD ABOUT GOD'S PROVISION . . ,
'God's work, done In God's way, will never
lack God's provision.' This principle was mis
sionary great J. Hudson Taylor's assurance
when, through "pleas" to God alone, the China
Inland Mission sustained nearly 2,000 mission
aries in China. As you who receive our News
letters know, our communications seldom men
tion financial needs except as prayer subjects, for
we. too, believe that God must be the motivator
and director of those whom He would have give
for this work, just as He is for those of us who
serve here physically. This makes us partners
together with God and also brings us together in
spirit in the more important support need
-prayer. It also makes GOD the one who deter
mines the "budget" and not ourselves.
As His work here has grown to such propor
tions, it is more tempting to remind you of our
needs. However, God reminds US that He has
never failed us, though at times He has asked us
to forego some of our salary, or equipment, or
materials that would make it easier. This, of
course, makes the blessing so much greater
when a major unexpected need is met BEFORE
we knew it would arise. We know those who
responded to God for these kinds of circum
stances have been similarlyblessed. And for you
who have been faithful suppliers for God in His
work here, we can only thank and praise Him
constantly.

Hank and Pat Davis
For some time now we have been convicted of
the need for a more aggressive approach toward
countries of the Caribbean where the church of
Christ needs to be introduced. We need also to
be able to spend more time advising and en
couraging graduates in their early years of
ministry. This has been Impossible because of
die lack of sufficient personnel to teach and
minister locally. Therefore, when HANK and
PAT DAVIS chose to serve the Lord in die
Windward Islands Evangelism ministries, we re
joiced!
Hank and Pat plan to join us in late 1984,
upon completion of their degrees at Kentucky
Christian College, and the provision by the Lord
of those who will supply their needs as they
minister here. They are mature Christians with
much church experience and have a real desire
and motivation to serve the Lord in the West In
dies. They have served with us for a summer,
and are aware of the needs as well as the culture
into which they are projecting themselves. Pray
with us for them as they seek His support for
their ministryhere. They may be reached at their

The Recruits
Hi! We are the Davises, Hank and Pat.
We are both from Bryan, Ohio where
the First Church of Christ is our home
church. We are presently ministering
to the church in Clay City, Kentucky,
and attending Kentucky Christian College.
We have four grown children. Mickey
who is in Atlanta, Jackie in Ohio, Tim
in Geiwany, and Brian in California.
Our interest in world evangelism began
in earnest after our first year at Kentucky
Christian College. During the summer
following our sophomore year we spent
an eleven week missionary internship
on the island of St. Vincent in the
Caribbean where we taught at a small
bible college. After a year of praying
about our future we are sure that here
is where God wants us to labor and
here is where we have committed
ourselves to serve Him.
We will be g^duating from college
in May of 1984 and have set Decemb^
1st of that year as our departure date
for St. Vincent.
IK MK DtK Dih UK
Our Work
St. Vincent is situated among the
Windward Islands of the West Indies
ninety air miles west of Barbados and
approximately two hundred miles north
of mainland South America.
St. Vincent is the center for Windward
Islands Evangelism where the continuing
goal is to evangelize, plant new churches,
and to strengthen existing congregations
throughout the Caribbean. The principal
part of this work is the Windward Islands
School of Evangelism which trains the
native evangelists, workers, cuid teachers
needed in both the new churches and
the older congregations.
W.I.S.E., as the school is commonly
known, is a New Testament bible college
with an average enrollment of twenty
students. Each student spends two
years at W.I.S.E. and receives six
semesters of education. The class hours
completed by a student at W.I.S.E.
are approximately the same as those
completed by a junior in an American
bible college.
The first graduating class at W.I.S.E.
was in 1981 and consisted of two young
men. Four young people graduated
in 1982, ten in 1983, and thirteen will
graduate in 1984.
Our work on St. Vincent will be centered
around teaching in the college. We
will ilso be actively involved in the
rapidly growing Amos Vale Christian
Church where Hank will preach from
time to time, and both Hank and Pat
will teach.
We feel strongly that our work on St.
Vincent will multiply our ministry.
By using our education to educate others
we are certain that many more can
be reached with the good news of Jesus
Christ than could be reached by us
alone.
tfv sm MV .
Our Needs
The financial needs at W.I.S.E. are
met through suport secured by those
missionaries who teach and work there.
The only obligation of each student
is to purchase airline tickets to and
from the island. Even this can be a
burden since many of the countries
in the Caribbean are among the poorest
in the world. The cost of a plane ticket
may well be equal to the average yearly
wage in a student's homeland.
The financial situation at W.I.S.E. is
just the opposite of that in our American
colleges. In America it is the normal
practice for a college to support a faculty
by paying them a salary and other
benefits. At W.I.S.E., however, the
faculty provides the total funds necessary
to operate the school.
While we will be working with two other
missionary families on St. Vincent ours
is an independent effort. We have set
December 1, 1984 as our departure
date. While finishing our final year
of school we must also concentrate
upon raising OUT own financial support.
Will you help us? Here are our needs.
LIVING UNK $1725.00 per month
SERVICE UNK 775.00 per month
TOTAL $2500.00 per month
Moving costs will be high but we farust
the regular monthly support funds
received prior to our departure will
cover our relocation expense.
Checks made out to Windward Islands

Isaiah 42:12
After spending an eleven week internship in St. Vincent during
the summer of 1982, Hank and Pat Davis are announcing their plans
to retuTTi there full time, and have set December 1, 198^ as their
departure date, ^
St. Vincent is the principal island of the V/est Indian nation of
St. Vincent and the Grenadines and is located in the Caribbean Sea
approximately one hundred air miles west of Barbados. St. Vincent
is the base for V/indward Islands Evangelism, and the home of
Windward Islands School of Evangelism.
In the late 1970's political turmoil plagued the island of Jamaica.
Among many whom the government forced to leave were missionaries
Bob and Jackie Muter and Jeff and Jane Robertson. While they could
not remain in Jamaica they felt they could not leave the over
one hundred new Christians at the Black River Church without
leadership. So, settling on the island of St. Lucia, the Muters
and the Robertsons began the first class of what has become known
as W.I.S.E., the Windward. Islands School of Evangelism. This first
class would consist of two young Jamaicans who would be trained
and sent back to minister and lead at Black River.
Since that first class began in 1979 V/.I.S.E. has seen many
changes. Before the first class could graduate the election of
a radical government in St. Lucia forced a move to St. Vincent.
Here W.I.S.E. has grown to an enrollment of twenty-three, and
sixteen of its graduates are proclaiming God's word or teaching
in Jamaica, Guyana, and St. Vincent, Ihe success of the graduates
is proving that the concept of training nationals to work among
their own people is valid and desirable.
While the school has grown so has the other work. Many islands
in the Caribbean, large and small, as well as the north coast of
South America need to hear God's word, and need New Testament
churches planted and staffed by native men. As more graduates
go into the field from W.I.S.E. more follow-up visits are necessary
to determine their on-going needs. The Amos Vale Church of
Christ, started on St. Vincent three years ago, has grown to over
one hundred. All of this work plus the great need of the people
to hear the gospel message have convinced Hank and Pat that they
are needed on St. Vincent.
Hank And Pat are both from Bryan, Ohio and were married there on
