You can check whch modem you have by openng the SM56 Contro Pane appcaton (Start-
>Settngs->Contro Pane, then doube cck on the SM56 Modem con). On the appcatons' man
wndow the product name of your nstaed modem s dspayed.

Persona-computer OEMs that bunde the SM56 can benet from szabe cost reductons,
hardware reducton, and ower power consumpton. End users benet from quck, easy and
ahordabe software upgrades, whch hep them keep current wth the atest communcatons
technoogy.
Pease check wth your drect modem supper for the atest software updates and other product
nformaton.
3 Persona Computer Requrements
Motoroa performs rgorous, exhaustve testng on ts modems. It has deveoped a st of
recommended persona computer features that perform we wth the SM56. The nformaton
ncudes quaed CPUs, Leve 2 cache requrements, operatng systems, RAM requrements, and
thrd-party sound card compatbty. However, n today's dynamc technoogy markets, t s not
possbe to test a components and combnatons on a systems.
Ths secton outnes mnmum system requrements for SM56 operaton. On these systems, CPU
oadng was found to be acceptabe and the modem demonstrated good performance over the
entre network mode.
Important: SM56 operaton s not mted to the persona computer systems sted here.
Recommended CPUs
The SM56 modem has been quaed (tested for processor oadng and TSB network mode
coverage) on the foowng processors:
Inte Pentum, 150MHz wth MMX, 256K Leve 2 (L2) cache mnmum
Inte Pentum, 200MHz, 256K L2 cache mnmum
Inte Pentum II
Inte Pentum Pro
Inte Ceeron (Pentum II, 266MHz, no L2 cache)
AMD K6-2 wth 3DNow!, 256K L2 cache
The SM56 functons satsfactory on the foowng systems. However, t has not been fuy
quaed (t was not tested for processor oadng or TSB performance):
AMD K6, 233 MHz, 256K L2 cache
Cyrx MII, 266MHz, 256K L2 cache
The SM56 does not functon on the foowng CPUs, whose oatng-pont performance s
nsumcent:
Cyrx MedaGX
Cyrx MedaGXM
Cyrx 6x86
Leve 2 Cache Benets
Leve 2 (L2) cache s an nstructon memory (SRAM) bank that resdes outsde the CPU core. It
hods many nstructons cose to the CPU, to reduce the need for the processor to use sow access
cyces fetchng nstructons from man memory (DRAM). Emnatng most CPU accesses to man
memory consderaby mproves overa system performance.
The SM56 modem works best when a mnmum of 256K L2 Cache s nstaed on the computer
system motherboard to mnmze processor oadng. Inte's Ceeron (266MHz PII) systems do not
have L2 cache. Athough the SM56 operates on those systems, host processor oadng ncreases
n the absence of L2 cache.
Compatbe Operatng Systems
The SM56 modem w run on the foowng operatng systems:
Wndows 95 (OEM Servce Reease 2.0 or ater)
Wndows 98
Wndows NT
DOS Box under Wndows 95/98.
System RAM Requrements
The SM56 operates on systems that have the mnmum RAM requred by the nstaed operatng
system. As wth L2 cache, the more man memory, the better. Ths reduces sow hard-dsk
swappng and mproves overa system performance....especay when executng numerous
concurrent processes.
4 Preparng the Computer for SM56 Instaaton
To ensure probem-free nstaaton of the SM56, ensure that an Interrupt Request (IRO) ne s
avaabe, as foows.
1. In Wn95/98, open the Contro Pane.
2. Doube cck the System con.
3. Seect the Devce Manager tab.
4. Hghght the Computer con.
5. Seect the Propertes rado button.
6. Ensure that the Interrupt Request (IRO) rado button s seected.
Ths dspays the IRO nes that are n use on the computer. Avaabe/unused nes are not shown
on the st. The SM56 PCI software modem can use an IRO n the range 3 through 15, ncusve. If
there s no IRO ne avaabe for the SM56 dsabe one of the COM ports n the BIOS and use t's
IRO.
Note: If you are usng a Wndows 95/98 DOS box appcaton, the modem requres two IROs. Refer
to the Troubeshootng secton n ths document, or to the on-ne User's Gude for more
nformaton on DOS appcaton support. You can access the User's Gude through the SM56
modem Contro Pane appcaton.
Aso, you must ensure that one of COM Port 2, 3, or 4 s avaabe for the SM56, as foows:
1. Open the Wndows Contro Pane.
2. Doube cck the System con.
3. Choose the Devce Manager tab.
4. Expand the Ports (COM and LPT) branch to see whch COM ports are aready nstaed.
To nsta the SM56 so that t s accessbe to oder appcaton software and DOS programs, the
modem needs to be nstaed on one of COM port 2, 3, or 4. If none of these ports are avaabe,
you must dsabe one of them n the BIOS.
5 Understandng Sound Card Compatbty and Instang the SM56 Hardware
Note: Ths secton appes ony to Data/Fax/Speakerphone modems.
Before dscussng modem board nstaaton, et's revew the optona sound card connectons for
the SM56. Reca that SM56 Data/Fax/TAM modems do not support the sound subsystem, even
though you can record and pay back answerng machne messages through your sound card
usng them.
Sound Card Compatbty:
The SM56 requres a sound card to use ts speakerphone capabtes. The Data/Fax/TAM modem
requres the sound card for oca message payback whch occurs through the host PC bus, not va
externa wre connectons. For ths reason there are typcay no TAPI connectors or
speaker/mcrophone |acks provded on Data/Fax/TAM and Data/Fax modems. Instead, these
modems usuay have a oca ca progress speaker mounted on them, whe speakerphone
supportng modems do not (snce they can be connected to the sound board).
Typcay, there are two methods for nterfacng the Data/Fax/TAM/Speakerphone modem to a
sound card:
Interna speaker/mcrophone TAPI connector/header
Mcrophone and Speaker |acks mounted on the modem board
TAPI Connector
Usng the on-board TAPI connector requres a sound card that aso has a TAPI-stye connector,
whch has pns that provde anaog mcrophone output and speaker nput connectons. Many
sound cards have one or more CD or auxary connectors, but these do not provde the requred
mcrophone output for the SM56. To ensure compatbty, check the sound card speccatons;
one connector must provde a mcrophone output as we as a speaker nput.
You can make up or purchase a cabe that routes SM56 mcrophone and speaker sgnas to the
sound card. Locate the 4-pn header connector on the SM56 card. The SM56 reference desgn
connector pn-out s as foows.
SM56 Pn Sgna
1 Ground
2 Mcrophone In
3 Ground
4 Speaker Out
Important: Dherent modem manufacturers may vary ths pnout. Consut ther modem
documentaton to verfy. Aso, dherent sound card connector pnouts may be dherent, n whch
case the audo cabe w need to have cross-over wres to match the pn sgnas. Make sure to
consut your sound card documentaton for pn-sgna detas.
On-Board Mcrophone and Speaker |acks
If the sound card does not provde a TAPI-stye connector, you can connect the SM56 modem to
the sound card through optona on-board mcrophone and speaker |acks. Ask your modem
supper for a board wth ths opton. The mcrophone |ack aows for the drect connecton of a
mcrophone to the SM56 modem card. The sound card aso has a mcrophone nput.
To use speakerphone appcatons wth the modem, connect your mcrophone to the mcrophone
nput |ack on the SM56 modem card. You can then tak nto your mcrophone and hod a
conversaton wth the remote party.
To record audo (such as a voce ma greetng) on the persona computer, attach the mcrophone
to the mcrophone nput |ack on the sound card. Note that some teephony appcatons may
support audo recordng through the modem |acks, e.g. Btware, n whch case you do not need to
swtch the mcrophone to the sound card nput |ack.
You may be abe to create a speca cabe or use a T-sptter to connect one mcrophone to the
nput on the modem and the sound board smutaneousy.
The speaker out |ack on the modem board can be used n one of two ways:
To drecty connect powered speakers to t.
To connect t to the sound card ne-n |ack (ths aows the speakers to reman pugged nto the
sound card at a tmes).
SM56 Hardware Instaaton Procedure:
1. Power down the persona computer.
2. Locate a vacant PCI bus connector.
3. If usng the SM56 Data/Fax/Speakerphone modem, connect the sound subsystem nterface
cabe(s) to the modem card (va the nterna TAPI connector or usng the audo |acks -- refer to the
nformaton above on sound card compatbty.)
4. Connect the modem Lne nput to an anaog phone |ack usng an R|-11 phone cabe. Optonay,
connect a teephone handset to the Phone nput on the ne nterface card.

5. Repace the persona computer cover and power t back on.
6 Instang SM56 Software on Wndows 95/98
Note: Wndows 95/98 assgns the modem a COM port number. To support oder software
appcatons and DOS games the SM56 nstaaton software attempts to negotate a COM port
number n the range of 1-4. If the nsta pcks a hgher COM port, you can force the COM port
seecton va the Contro Pane appcaton after nsta s compete.
Instang on Wndows 95/98
(Note: The Insta Wzard may vary sghty wth dherent versons of the OS and dherent servce
packs)
On startng Wndows for the rst tme after nstang the SM56 ne nterface card, the Wndows
Conguraton Manager detects the new hardware, assgns resources to t, and then dspays a
wndow requestng the modem software drvers. Ths ndcates that the Conguraton Manager s
ookng for the nformaton (INF) e, whch contans nformaton about the modem, ncudng
devce type (Modem), devce drver nformaton (the name of the drver that w contro the
modem) and the AT command/response sets that t supports.
In response to the request wndow. Seect Drver from Dsk Provded by Hardware Manufacturer
(or Have Dsk dependng on the OS verson) and browse to where the SM56 drvers are ocated.
Wndows shoud nd the nformaton on the dsk and dentfy the devce as a SM56 Modem. It
then copes the es from the nsta dsk to the computer.
Important: The nsta program w dspay a message box that reports Cannot ocate e.... If ths
occurs, browse and re-pont to where the SM56 drver es are ocated. Then cck OK. Instaaton
w now compete.
On Data/Fax/TAM and Data/Fax/Speakerphone modems, another devce s found after the modem
has been nstaed. Wndows notes you that t has found a Sera Wave Devce for the modem
and prompts for a Wave Devce drver. Re-pont to the SM56 drver ocaton and cck OK.
When these two devces are nstaed, the SM56 Modem Setup program runs.
The modem setup program for PCI does not prompt for user nput durng nstaaton. It defauts to
USA country code and Domestc Engsh as the anguage for the onne Hep e. If you wsh to
change these settngs, and/or the COM port seecton, you may do so va the SM56 Contro Pane
appcaton (Start->Settngs->Contro Pane, then doube-cck the SM56 Modem con) after setup
s compete. Aso, for SM56 Data/Fax/Speakerphone modems the mcrophone and speaker gan
seectons may be done va the Contro Pane appcaton (under the Advanced tab).
Aso, DOS box support s dsabed after the SM56 s nstaed. After nsta s compete, you must
enabe t va the Advanced tab n the SM56 Contro Pane appcaton. Make sure the DOS box
check box s checked. If not, cck t to check t, ext the SM56 Contro Pane appcaton and restart
the computer. You must restart the computer to compete DOS box enabng.
7 Instang SM56 Software on Wndows NT 4.0
Important -- The SM56 software for Wndows NT s Data/Fax ony, there s no speakerphone or TAM
supported.
Wndows NT 4.0 does not fuy support pug and pay (PnP). Therefore, after nstang the modem
board n the computer and bootng, the operatng system w not automatcay recognze that
new hardware s present. You must manuay nsta the modem as foows:
Step 1 -- Insta a COM port for the modem
You must nsta a COM port for the SM56 modem as foows:
1. Open the Wndows NT Contro Pane.
2. Doube cck the Ports con. The Ports wndow opens.

You can check COM port nstaaton through the Modems con n the Contro Pane or through the
SM56 Contro Pane appcaton (see beow). Normay, the SM56 w nsta on COM2, COM3, or
COM4. Sometmes, however, dependng on your computer system setup or Wndows setup, the
SM56 may nsta on COM5 (or hgher). Athough the modem functons correcty on any COM port,
many software appcatons do not work f the modem s on a COM port number hgher than 4. If
the SM56 nstas on COM5 (or hgher), you can force t to a ower COM port va the SM56 Contro
Pane appet.
2. Run modem dagnostc from the SM56 Contro Pane.
The SM56 software modem provdes an nformatve Contro Pane appcaton that reports:
Modem status: n use/not n use; dang; negotatng a connecton; actua connect rate (updated
n rea tme durng a connecton).
A button to access the on-ne User's Gude.
COM port seectons.

new drvers are requred.
However, f you change from Wndows 95 or Wndows 98 to Wndows NT you must get a new set
of drvers for that operatng system. The SM56 modem software for Wndows 9x w not work
under Wndows NT. Contact your drect modem vendor or PC supper for drvers, or vst ther Web
stes.
10 Usng the SM56 Modem
32-Bt Wndows 95/98 Appcatons
Because 32-bt Wndows 95/98 appcatons use TAPI for communcatng wth modems, usng the
SM56 s as easy as seectng the SM56 modem by name from the st of avaabe modems.
16-Bt Wndows 95/98 Appcatons
Because 16-bt appcatons cannot use the TAPI nterface, there s a bt more setup requred.

computer. You must restart the computer to compete DOS box enabng.
The SM56 can be used by DOS appcatons ony through a Wndows 95/98 DOS box. Wn 9x DOS
box support s acheved by vrtuazng the standard I/O and IRO assgned to a COM port. Ths
means that the SM56 drvers capture and redrect a I/O to/from the standard I/O address for the
COM port to whch t assgned. In smper terms, you te the appcaton the COM port that the
SM56 modem s nstaed on, and then use a the standard I/O and IRO settngs. Standard I/O
addresses and IROs for COM Ports 1-4 are as foows:
COM Port IO Address IRO
1 3F8 4
2 2F8 3
3 3E8 4
4 2E8 3
To determne the SM56 COM port number, open the SM56 Contro Pane appcaton (Start-
>Settngs->Contro Pane and doube cck the SM56 Modem con), and seect the Dagnostcs tab.
The COM port number to whch the SM56 modem s assgned s sted here. Congure your
appcaton to use ths COM port. For exampe, f the SM56 modem has been assgned COM 2,
congure your appcaton to communcate through COM 2.
Some of the more common AT commands used by appcatons are:
Intazaton* AT&F
Hangup ATH0

14 Understandng Mcrosoft Wndows Logo Certcaton
Mcrosoft's WHOL (Wndows Hardware Ouaty Logo) s targeted at commercay marketed
desktop appcatons that run on the atest reeased versons of Wndows 95, Wndows 98, and
Wndows NT Workstaton. It s not ntended for cent/server or Wndows NT Server appcatons.
The goas of the ogo certcaton program are to mprove Wndows hardware and software
quaty, ncrease end-user satsfacton, and reduce support costs.
To receve the ogo, a product must show proof of compatbty wth Wndows 95/98 and NT.
These ncude makng sure that a devce:
Instas and regsters tsef propery wth the operatng system
Is reaby functona and stabe
Removes tsef (mnus ts core components) usng an automated unnstaer
Supports Unversa Namng Conventons (UNC) and Long Fe Names (LFN)
What does the ogo mean for a product such as the SM56 modem? It means that Motoroa and ts
OEMs, system ntegrators, and VARs can use the Wndows ogo on ther products and packagng,
and on advertsng, coatera, and marketng materas. Ths sgnas end users that the SM56
software modem s tested and fuy functona on Wndows 95/98 and Wndows NT; that t s
desgned to provde optmum usabty and compatbty; and that t takes advantage of the atest
technooges provded by these operatng systems. It makes users fee more comfortabe about
purchasng the product, and t assures them of more compete satsfacton whe usng t.
The Wndows ogo aso means that the quaed product gets ncuded on Mcrosoft's Wndows
Hardware Compatbty Lst (HCL) under "Logo," renforcng to customers and end-users ake that
t meets Mcrosoft's strct requrements and operates propery wth Wndows operatng systems.
15 An Overvew of the V.90 Protoco
In February 1998, the Internatona Teecommuncatons Unon (ITU) formuated the V.90 ndustry-
standard protoco for 56K modems. Before the adopton of the V.90 standard, 56K modems
comped wth one of two pre-standard mpementatons: K56ex or X2 technoogy. Unfortunatey
for ISPs and end-users, these technooges were not compatbe. ISPs had to worry about whch
standard to empoy. End users had to be sure to purchase modems compatbe wth ther ISP's
equpment.
Upgradng Motoroa's SM56 K56ex modems to V.90 s a software-ony upgrade. There s no
change to the ne nterface hardware. Ths makes t easy for pre-V.90 users to upgrade ther
system to V.90 compance.
Note: sometmes V.90 s referred to as V.PCM. PCM s an acronym for Puse Code Moduaton. Wth
V.90, hgh-speed downstream (from Internet to persona computer) data transmsson s
accompshed usng PCM technques. Before the ITU formuated ts standard V.90 protoco, the
ndustry typcay referred to t as V.PCM. Ths name s fadng from use.
V.90 technoogy aows users to connect to the Internet at rates up to twce as fast as those of
V.34 (33.6Kbps) modems. The maxmum receve (downstream) rate s 56Kbps, whe the return
path (upstream) connects at V.34 rates up to 33.6 Kbps. Ths s perfect for Internet connectons,
where most data s transferred downstream.
The SM56 begns connectons by attemptng a V.90 connecton to the headend. If the headend s
not V.90, the SM56 automatcay swtches to K56ex mode. If K56ex mode fas (when, for
exampe, the headend uses X2 technoogy, or there s a nosy phone ne condton), the SM56
drops to V.34 rates. Ths auto-mode swtchng mechansm ensures maxmum compatbty wth
a remote headends.
