Raju The Elephant Who Was Chained For 50 Years

Cries Tears Of Joy After Being Freed In India
Animal charity workers joined local
officials to get Raju the elephant off the
farm in India's Uttar Pradesh region, where
he was kept and used as a 'beggar's prop.'
An elephant who'd been shackled with
spiked chains for his entire 50-year life
cried tears of joy when he was finally
freed from his horrific captivity.
Raju had water streaming down his face
as a daring team of rescuers swooped in to
release him from his confinement in India.
Vets and wildlife experts from the
British-based Wildlife SOS-UK were
joined by 20 Forestry Commission
officers and two cops in the dangerous
nighttime operation.
The squad raided the farm in India's
Uttar Pradesh region, where Raju
who'd been regularly beaten and
abused by his owners, who used him to
beg for money was being kept.
And they claim that, as they liberated
him from his manacles, he openly
wept because he realized that his halfcentury ordeal was coming to an end.
"Raju was in chains 24 hours a day,
an act of intolerable cruelty. The team
were astounded to see tears roll down
his face during the rescue," Wildlife
SOS-UK's Pooja Binepal said.
"It was incredibly emotional. We knew
in our hearts he realized he was being
freed," Binepal added.
Raju, believed to have been snatched from
his mom as a young calf, is thought to have
had 27 owners and was being used as a
"beggars' prop" from dawn until dusk.
The rescue mission took place a year
to the day after the charity had been

alerted to Raju's plight by the Uttar

Pradesh Forest Department.
A court order allowed rescuers to seize
the giant animal, but Raju's owner
refused to give him up.
Deciding enough was enough, and seeing
the terrible suffering that the elephant
was enduring, rescuers approached
Wednesday night with a truck.
They loaded the sedated bull onto the
back before driving him 350 miles to
the Elephant Conservation and Care
Centre at Mathura, where his shackles

were removed.
There, Raju took his first steps to
freedom at 12.01 a.m. July 4
America's Independence Day.
"The other elephants in the sanctuary
awoke from their sleep as we pulled in
and came to have a look it was an
extraordinary moment," Wildlife SOSUK founder Kartick Satyanarayan said.
The freed beast will be held in an
isolation pen for the next week so he can
receive emergency medical attention.
Wildlife officials are working to raise

Inquest Told Of Chloroform Clue In Tragic MurderSuicide

A family's computer was used to visit

a website selling chloroform before a
murder-suicide in which a husband and
wife and their two young children died,
an inquest has heard.
Police investigating the deaths of Nelish
and Preetika Sharma and their son,
Divesh, 5, and daughter, Divya, 3, found
someone used the name 'Neil' to visit the
website 27 times in the lead-up to their
deaths in 2012, the Coroners Court.
Detective Acting Sergeant Chris Price
said investigators believed Mr Sharma,
36, killed his wife and children some
time on the weekend of April 28-29
that year and then hanged himself.
Mrs Sharma, 35, and the children most
likely died from smothering, the court
was told.
Their bodies were discovered by police
inside their Glen Waverley home on
May 1 that year, after worried child
care workers contacted a relative to
check on the family.
Detective Acting Sergeant Price said
traces of chloroform were found in Mr
Sharma's system but not in the blood
of his wife or children, although it

was possible the substance could have

evaporated when further testing was
done.
The inquest heard that friends and
family members were told Mr Sharma
was a controlling husband who had
physically abused his wife, and that
Mrs Sharma had confided in her sister
and a colleague of the abuse and the
pressures of caring for her family and
her parents-in-law.
State coroner Ian Gray was also told
more funding was needed to reduce
domestic violence, particularly among
Victoria's migrant communities.
The Sharmas were part of Melbourne's
Fijian-Indian community.
Dr Ruchita, from InTouch, an
organisation aiming to reduce
domestic violence among multicultural
communities, said better funding
would help encourage people to report
family violence and to educate migrant
families and their community leaders.
Domestic Violence Victoria chief
executive Fiona McCormack said
incidents of domestic violence were
higher in patriarchal societies and

LICI Pays Out $7.6m Bonus

Good news for Life Insurance
Corporation of India (LICI) policy
holders in Fiji after the insurance
company announced it had distributed
$7.6 million as bonus as of July 1.
This is despite a decline in interest
rates from 5.83 per cent in 2009 to 1.79
per cent in 2013.
LICI Fiji operations general manager,
Vimlesh Dhar said LICI bonus had
remained the same during these periods.
LICI will pay the full year bonus to those
policy holders as well as for those who
take the policy at year end. In addition
we also pay a final additional bonus as
a top up over the bonus, Mr Dhar said.
95 percent of the surplus which is
F$7.6 million have been distributed to
policy holders as simple reversionary
bonus for the year 2013.
The final additional bonus goes up to

35 percent of bonus for the long term

policies.
Mr Dhar announced this during a press
conference in the LICI building on
Butt Street.
He added the company had been
enjoying a 22 per cent growth since
last year.
Our bonus rates are in public domain
everything is very transparent with us
even the final rates and interest rates.
In the current year our business has
been growing as of July 15 we have

Mr Dhar believes keeping the interest
of the policy holder paramount would
continue to offer a good value for the
investment and the purchase of the

agencies, health professionals and
religious leaders share information.
Dr Ruchita said it was possible Mrs
Sharma was reluctant to leave her
marriage because of the pressure within
the Indian-Australian community to
make relationships work, and because
of the humiliation faced by women who
divorced or accepted help from outside.
Physical abuse, gender inequality
and social isolation were all common
occurrences among Indian-Australian
communities, Dr Ruchita said.
Family violence was also considered a
private issue, she said, because people
did not want to be blamed for breaking
up friends' marriages.
Detective Acting Sergeant Price said
investigators had been told that Mrs
Sharma reported to her sister and a
colleague that she had been assaulted
by her husband, that he screened
her emails, telephone calls and text
messages and that he had once locked
her outside the home.
The court was told the couple separated
in 2009 after Mr Sharma discovered

details of a relationship his wife had

with another man before she met her
husband. But they reconciled in 2010
for the sake of their children, the court
was told.
In the weeks before the deaths, Mrs
Sharma told family members the
relationship with her husband had
improved and that he was becoming a
better person, the court heard.
After the deaths, police investigated a
car crash in December 2011 in which
the family car hit a tree during a day
trip in the Dandenong Ranges.
Detective Acting Sergeant Price said
police later suspected the crash could
have been a murder-suicide attempt
by Mr Sharma, but that investigators
concluded he was most likely distracted
while driving and lost control of the car.
Mr Sharma suffered a minor brain
injury in the crash, the court heard, and
later admitted to others his difficulty
in returning to work in the months
afterwards.
Judge Gray described the deaths as
tragic and said he hoped to return
findings in three months.

Schools To Celebrate Mandela

Day

Schools all over the country have been

encouraged to celebrate the Nelson
Mandela International Day on the 18th
of July.
The Ministry of Education permanent
secretary Dr. Brij Lal has encouraged
schools to observe this day and to
identify with values that demonstrate
Nelson Mandelas life and his struggles
for equality and justice.
He is a prominent figure globally and
deserves an honorary treatment for
his dedication towards freedom and
equality. Fiji is in a historical period
preparing for election and leaders such
as the great Nelson Mandela possess
values that lay a sound foundation for

the children of this nation, commented

Dr Lal.
As a day set aside by the United Nations,
the Ministry of Education permanent
secretary said that it was an opportunity
for students to learn more on the struggles
Mandela faced in his pursuit of justice
and equality in South Africa.
I am urging the education district
staff and the teachers to ensure that
all schools engage themselves and
commemorate this special day. This
is an opportunity to impart the sound
values of Nelson Mandela to our
children to consolidate our effort in
making our beloved nation better
than we found it.

Fiji Airways Records $17.2M Profit

4 an
Fiji Airways Group has announced
operating profit of $17.2m for the first
half-year, from January 1 to June 30.
It surpasses profits recorded for the
corresponding period in 2013, at $0.5m.
In a statement, the group, says the
amount is the total adjusted operating
profit excluding release of aged
management accruals and one-off
items like the introduction cost of the
first A330 in 2013 and the hard landing
cost in 2014.
Stefan Pichler, Managing Director and
CEO attributed the performance to
higher load factors, more efficient cost
management, streamlined management
structures and a highly motivated staff.
It has been an excellent start into 2014
and now we have to keep the pace as
we want to pay a profit share to our
staff for 2014 as well as a dividend to
our shareholders, he said.
The key driver of this underlying
profitability was the 10per cent higher
load factor across the whole network.

Vat Reduction Plans WellReceived: NFP

Fiji's National Federation Party (NFP)

says their plans to reduce VAT from 15
per cent to 10 per cent plus other remedial
measures to bring down the high cost of
living have been well-received.
Party Leader Professor Biman Prasad
is on a five-day campaign tour of
Vanua Levu this week accompanied
by former president Raman Singh,
vice president Parmod Chand, veteran
politician Pramod Rae and other party
candidates in the North.
At Dobui in Bua, the party says their
plans to reduce the cost of living were
applauded by more than 30 people who
attended.
"We are very pleased with the response
from the voters and we expect this
enthusiasm throughout our meetings in
the next four days," Professor Biman

said.
He also assured those gathered that
issues, including unemployment and
putting an end to the coup culture,
which were raised by youths in a
mini conference in Labasa over the
weekend would be addressed in the
party's manifesto.
Professor Biman says the party firmly
believes the country's future can only
be peaceful and prosperous through
their social, economic and political
advancement.
Meanwhile, the party will be holding
campaign meetings in Vunivau and
Korokadi. The NFP delegation also
visited Nasarawaqa, Muanidevu and
Qaraniqoli,
On Wednesday, the campaign moved
to Seaqaqa, Tabia and Savusavu.

Direct flights between Fiji and Solomon

Islands have been suspended following
the decision of the Solomon Islands
government to ban Fiji Airways.
The dispute began after the Solomon
Islands government breached the Air
Services Agreement between Fiji and
Solomons that allows for air travel
between the two nations.
The Solomon Islands government
has prevented two Fiji Airways
direct flights from Nadi to Honiara
from taking place over the past two
weekends.
After the latest flight was refused
permission to fly last Saturday, Fiji
countered by banning a Solomon
Airlines flight that was due to take
place on the same day.
Attorney General and Minister for
Civil Aviation, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
in a government statement said the
responsibility for the dispute rested
with Solomon Islands.
By refusing to allow Fiji Airways
to operate its Honiara flight on
successive Saturdays, the Solomon
Islands government has given Fiji
no choice but to respond. We regret
the inconvenience to the travelling
public but this action was triggered by

Solomon Islands and the responsibility

lies with Honiara," he said.
Sayed-Khaiyum said there had been
a disagreement between the airlines
of the two countries over sharing the
direct route but Fiji had anticipated
that the dispute could be settled in the
normal commercial manner.
We had hoped that this could be
resolved amicably between Fiji Airways
and Solomon Airlines but unfortunately,
the Solomon Islands government chose
to intervene unilaterally to prevent Fiji
Airways from making its scheduled
flights. This means that it is in
fundamental breach of the Air Services
Agreement between us.
The Minister said Fiji was willing to
hold discussions to break the impasse
and the ball was now in the Solomons
court. They need to lift their flight ban
and allow the airlines to return to the
negotiating table so that this dispute can
be resolved and the travelling public is
not inconvenienced any further."
Fiji stands ready to have this matter
resolved amicably for the mutual
benefit of both our countries," he
added.
Meanwhile, Fiji Airways has stopped
bookings for Honiara flights and the

Crash Kills 34-Year-Old

A fatal crash in Malolo, Nadi, has

claimed the life of a 34-year-old man
and hospitalised three passengers.
The accident happened at around 9.15
am and involved a ten-wheeler logging
truck and a private car.
We were terrified to see the fatal
accident which claimed the life of a
driver right in front of our eyes, said
witness Raj Gopal Reddy.
We stopped over at a friends garage
when the accident took place. The
driver of the car veered to the other
side of the lane and bumped the side
of the logging truck, Mr Reddy said.
From the impact, the car was dragged
for about 10 metres before it was
pushed off the road.
The driver of the truck tried to avoid
the crash.
The truck took down an electricity
pole, breaking it into half before ending
in a drain on the other side of the road.
We called the Nadi Police Station,

but the response was pathetic, They

arrived 35 minutes after the accident
and we were controlling the traffic,
Mr Reddy said.
Speaking on the basis of anonymity,
the truck driver said he tried to avoid
the crash but it was too late.
My truck stopped after I bumped into
an electricity pole, said the confused
truck driver.
The truck driver said he was dazed and
confused about what happened.
He was on his way to Suva when the
accident happened.
Police
spokesperson
Atunaisa
Sokomuri said the passenger from the
private car was admitted at the Nadi
Hospital.
The driver of the truck and his two
passengers were treated for minor
injuries. Investigations are under way,
he said.
He is pleading for motorists to be
mindful of the speed limits.

airline company says this will remain

until the suspension is lifted.
The airline, through its Reservations
Centre, is re-routing booked passengers
on alternative flights through Brisbane,
Port Moresby and Port Vila.
Fiji Airways Manager Public Relations
and Communications, Shane Hussein
said while they are working hard to
ensure the disruption to customers is
minimised, visa entry requirements
in some passport holders for some

countries prolong this.

In addition, some alternative routes to
/ from Honiara are not available daily,
which causes longer wait times.
He said Fiji Airways is providing
disrupted
passengers
with
accommodation and meals where
required and the airline understands
the frustrations of passengers and
appreciates their patience during this
time and remains hopeful of a speedy
resolution to this situation.

President Calls For Inclusive Approach To HIV/Aids

The President of Fiji, His Excellency
Ratu Epeli Nailatikau called for an
inclusive approach as a key tool to
addressing HIV and AIDS in Fiji.
As the Fijian Head of State launched
the Integrated Behavioural and
Biological Survey and Size Estimation
of Sex Workers in Fiji: HIV Prevention
Project report, he applauded the
contribution by key stakeholders and
persons towards the production of the
report.
The report provides Fijis HIV response
with sex workers, transgender people
and other key populations a standard
for the Pacific.
The launch saw the President call for
an inclusive approach to understanding
and addressing HIV/AIDS in the
country.
I do believe that if we continue
working together involving key
populations such as sex workers,
MSM, trans genders and people living
with HIV Fiji will end AIDS by 2030,
the President told guests at the launch.
The provision of comprehensive
sexual health services alone will not be
sufficient. As the research points out,
a right based approach requires that
sex workers and transgender people
have access to legal literacy, legal aid
services and other programmes that

address, reduce and mitigate sexual,

physical, emotional and economic
violence, His Excellency said.
The President commended the
stakeholders Ministry of Health,
Fiji National University, Survival
Advocacy Network (SANS) Fiji and
UNAIDS for the first large scale
quantitative research on sex workers in

Fiji .
We are pleased that the launch of the
report comes before the International
AIDS conference that opens next week
in Melbourne as the results of this
study can now be formally referred to
in the regional and global forums and
this is Fijis contribution to the global
response.

Fiji Continues Trade With EU

Through Interim EPA

The Bainimarama Government is

taking the necessary measures to ensure
that preferential market access of Fijis
most important exportssugar, fish,
garments and processed foods to the
EU will not be disrupted by a lapse in
a trade agreement with the European
Union.
This is a significant action that
preserves the favourable market
conditions for the foundations of our
export economy. The results are that
thousands of Fijian jobs are protected
and our economy will continue to
grow at its fastest rate in years, said
Attorney-General and Minister of
Industry and Trade, Mr. Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum.
Specifically, the Fijian Government has
approved the provisional application
of the Interim Economic Partnership
Agreement (EPA) with the European
Union to maintain favourable market
access for Fijian exports.
The Attorney-General and Minister
of Industry and Trade notified his
European Union (EU) counterpart, the
Commissioner for Trade, informing
him of the Fijian Governments
decision to go forward with the Interim

EPA.
Fijis objective in the trade negotiations
with the EU has always been to conclude
a long term, mutually beneficial and
development friendly Comprehensive
EPA, rather than a shorter term interim
EPA.
The minister said concluding the
Comprehensive EPA, together with
the rest of the Pacific ACP countries
remains an urgent priority.
A major factor working toward
building confidence and securing a
comprehensive agreement are the
reforms instituted by the Bainimarama
Government to revitalize and diversify
the sugar industry, especially with
regard to the improvements in the
quality and productivity of Fijian
Sugar, Sayed-Khaiyum said.
The Bainimarama Government has
invested heavily in the sugar industry, a
vital sector of the economy that supports
the livelihood of over 200,000 Fijians.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade will
work with its EU counterparts to assure
a smooth transition to the provisional
application of the Interim EPA and
guarantee that there are no disruptions
to exports.

New School Facilities To Attract

More Students

Construction works carried out at the

Duavata Secondary School in Cawaro
in the province of Macuata will
become an incentive for students to
continuously attend classes.
While commending Government for
the construction works carried out, the
schools manager Apolosi Ibe said that
this new development will be an incentive
not just for students but for parents as well
to send their children to school.
The school roll so far is 67 from form
3 to 7 and I am optimistic that after the
construction of these new facilities will
attract more parents and students next
year, Ibe said.
Two dormitories, two teachers quarters
and two ablution blocks are currently
being constructed at the school with

a total cost of more than $200,000

funded by Government.
Ibe said that parents and teachers of
Duavata Secondary are happy with the
construction work which is currently
being supervised by engineers from the
Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
The construction work started last
year and should be completed in the
next two months. Men from three the
three villages of Cawaro, Nukusa and
Lagi are helping in the construction,
Ibe said.
Ibe said they have also asked
Government to assist them with the
construction of a dining hall for the
secondary students because at the
moment they are using the primary
school dining hall.

Best Constitution, Says Chand

Pranay Chand, a physically challenged
Fijian man, believes the 2013
Constitution is the best that any
government has ever produced.
Now a firm supporter of the Prime
Ministers FijiFirst party, Chand says
no other constitution has provided for
people with minimum abilities like the
2013 Constitution.
Section 42 of the Bill of Rights in the
document provides for people with
disability, it gives these persons the right
to access all places, public transport
and information, to use sign language,
Braille or other appropriate means of

communication and reasonable access

to necessary materials relating to their
disability.
They have also been given the right to
reasonable adaptation to buildings and
other infrastructures and vehicles to
allow them to fully participate in society.
No other government has done so
much for the physically challenged
persons like this government, they have
done so much for us the disable and I
know there are more to look forward
to, Chand said.
"And because of these rights, I will
definitely vote for the FijiFirst party."

Tavua And Korovou Families To

Access Formal Electricty Supply

For the first time, families living along

parts of Tavua and Korovou will soon
have access to electricity in their
homes.
This $9.4 million project will see
families benefit from the extension of
the main power grid along the Kings
Highway from Tavua to Korovou.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said
that this historic project will also stimulate
economic activity within the area.
The Tavua Korovou region was also
declared a Tax Free Zone in the 2013

Budget. But in order for entrepreneurs

to be able to fully capitalise on this
initiative, they must have a reliable
supply of electricity, the Prime
Minister said in his 2014 National
Budget address late last year.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Electricity
Authority has prepared a ten-year
Power Development Plan in 2011,
which is being reviewed this year to
ensure development takes place in a
timely manner to meet the electricity
demand of Fiji.

and Labour Minister Jone Usamate
what his party would do if they return
to government.
Before, it seemed like there was
racism in this country, though we were
born here in Fiji, we were still being

Toddler Passes Away

A ONE-YEAR-OLD baby died at

the Lautoka Hospital from injuries
sustained when the vehicle the child
was travelling in veered off the road in
Lautoka.
The incident happened at 4.45pm on
Tavakubu Rd in Lautoka on Tuesday.
Police spokeswoman Naina Ragigia
said the baby was sitting in the back
seat of the vehicle when the accident
happened.

"A 33-year-old mother and her oneyear-old child were thrown to the front
as a result of the impact and the baby
sustained serious injuries," she said.
"The four passengers, driver and baby
were rushed to the Lautoka Hospital.
They were all released after being
cleared by medical personnel but the
baby was admitted at the Intensive
Care Unit.
"Unfortunately, she passed away."

Justice Goundar said when the

complainant gave her statement in
court, she struck him to be an assertive
witness.
She gave evidence that she lost
consciousness and when she gained
conscious she found her clothes
folded and left beside her. I find this
evidence not plausible; the alleged
rape occurred in an open room which
at the time was being occupied by
all the household members, Justice
Goundar said.
He continued to say that if he had
accepted that the other members of
the family were not at home at the
time, because of a church service
and would have returned home that
night, the accused would not expose
himself by leaving the complainant
unconscious knowing that his wife and
other members of the household would
return anytime.
I find the accuseds version of the fact
more plausible.
Justice Goundar said that for these
reasons he also agreed with the
assessors that the accused was not
guilty as charged.

More Than 20,000 Applications

For Polling Day Work

The Fijian Elections Office received

more than 20,000 applications over an
18-day nationwide recruitment drive
for 14,000 polling day workers.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem said it was indicative of the
level of interest towards the electoral
process and reflected strides made
by his office to bring up to speed the
process so as to ensure the country
is ready for the September election
and ensure a better, smooth, stable,
adaptable and inclusive election than
previous ones.
The recruitment drive began on June 9.
The next task now, Saneem says, is
to train the successful applicants. The
training of these applicants will be
carried out by trainers who will this
week engage in a workshop aimed to
remind, enhance and educate them
on the processes outlined in a manual
prepared by the Fijian Elections
Office.
Addressing these trainers, Saneem
urged them to unlearn everything they

have learnt about the 2014 General

Election and start afresh with the
curriculum specifically designed for
them.
"Always remember, there is only
one thing worse than an unanswered
question, an unasked question,"
Saneem said.
"As for Fijians whom you will be
training, treat them with respect.
Pay attention to their questions, do
not ignore any. Hear them fully and
provide answers to their questions.
Each person being trained expects you
to provide a comprehensive training so
that on Election Day, they are able to
perform and deliver.
"This is depending on you, on how you
train our Presiding Officers, Assistant
Presiding Officers, Venue Coordinators
and of course the Poll Day Workers."
The workshop, the first of three is
funded by the European Union. The
EU along with New Zealand is also
providing technical expertise to carry
out the training.

Travel Advice Not Related To

Elections:DFAT

The Australian governments advice

to their travellers available through the
smart traveller website is not related
to the upcoming general election, a
spokesperson from the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed.
In their smartraveller website (DFAT)
had warned Australians on visiting the
Capital City, Suva in Fiji because of
the prevalence of crime and potential
for civil unrest.
DFAT warned Australians since April
to exercise High Decree of caution in
Suva where Expatriates and tourists
have been the victim of violent crime,
particularly in Suva.
The guidance states We advise you
to exercise a high degree of caution
in Suva because of the prevalence of
crime and potential for civil unrest.

However the DFAT spokesperson said

that their advice has been in place since
2007 and it had nothing to do with the
upcoming elections.
We advise Australians to Exercise a
high degree of caution (level 2 of 4) in
Suva due to the prevalence of crime and
potential for civil unrest. This level of
advice has been in place since October
2007. It is not related to the upcoming
elections in 2014, the spokesperson said.
He said Australias travel advice,
available through the Smartraveller
website, provides a general assessment
of the security environment facing
Australian travellers overseas.
The overall level of the advice for Fiji
is Exercise normal safety precautions
(level 1 of 4). This is the lowest level of
travel advice, he said.

LTA Warns Drivers

DRIVERS can be fined if debris
and other-related substances are not
removed from their vehicle trunks
while travelling on a public street.
This is part of the traffic regulation 2000
that was communicated to stakeholders
during a meeting in Labasa early this week.
LTA's team leader enforcement northern
Emosi Caniogo said the regulation was
to ensure that debris or substances from
vehicle trunks were cleared.
"We have been monitoring the
movement of trucks and a few have
had to pay $25 because they failed
to clean the trunks of their vehicles
after off-loading cane or logs for that
matter," he said.
"The regulation's section 67 (1) states
that no person may allow a vehicle
while in use on a public street to

deposit oil, mud or any other substance

or debris which is likely to cause an
accident or injury to any person or
property.
"If it's established that the condition
of a public street was the cause of the
substance or debris being deposited,
the regulation won't be applied."
The regulation also states that a
person may enter into an agreement
acceptable to the highway authority
for the removal of any substances or
debris.
"Also, a person who fails to fulfill the
requirement of an agreement to remove
substances or debris commits an offence.
"We will work with the drivers to inform
them of such regulations so they are able
to clean their trunks after off-loading
materials such as logs and cane."

Six Thefts Recorded In 24 Hours

The Fiji Police Force recorded six

appealing to the public to assist them in
their investigations.
Of the six cases of theft, five were
recorded in the Central Division and
one in the Southern division.
Police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri
said items stolen ranged from mobile
phones, laptops and electronic items.
At Dudley High School, the schools
vice principal lost his uninsured HP
laptop from his office whilst he was
having a class.
He found the laptop worth $4,000
missing after his class.
In another incident, a black one touch
Alcatel phone went missing from a
Taxi which was hired by a University
tutor to a restaurant in town.
The owner only realised it was missing
when he received a message through
his email informing him that someone
was using the phone.

At the Suvavou House in the capital

city, an official mobile phone of a
36-year-old employee at the building
went missing from the persons drawer.
In the fourth incident at the Colonial
War Memorial Hospital base, a one
touch mobile phone valued at $159.00
belonging to a 45-year-old taxi base
controller, went whilst it was on a chair

a security officer.
In the Southern Division, a 27-year-old

Apple brand I-Pad worth up to $2000,
which was left in the students room.
As investigations proceed, police have
warned members of the public to keep
valuables and electronic items safe in
light of the high number of theft cases
recorded over the last 24 hours.

Police Charge Two Over Bank

Fraud
Police have charged two men, one
an 18-year-old student, after they
withdrew $9400 via forged withdraw
slips from a married couples joint
account.
This happened between May 23 and
June 5 at one of the local banks in Suva.

The men, both of Davuilevu Housing,

have each been charged with 10 counts
of obtaining financial advantage by
deception contrary to section 318 of
Crimes Decree no 44 of 2009.
They have been bailed and are due
back in court on August 18.

Fiji- Solomon Islands Flights Suspended

Direct flights between Fiji and Solomon

Islands have been suspended following
the decision of the Solomon Islands
government to ban Fiji Airways.
The dispute began after the Solomon
Islands government breached the Air
Services Agreement between Fiji and
Solomons that allows for air travel
between the two nations.
The Solomon Islands government
has prevented two Fiji Airways
direct flights from Nadi to Honiara
from taking place over the past two
weekends.
After the latest flight was refused
permission to fly last Saturday, Fiji
countered by banning a Solomon
Airlines flight that was due to take
place on the same day.
Attorney General and Minister for
Civil Aviation, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
in a government statement said the

Airways from making its scheduled

flights. This means that it is in
fundamental breach of the Air Services
Agreement between us.
The Minister said Fiji was willing to
hold discussions to break the impasse
and the ball was now in the Solomons
court. They need to lift their flight ban
and allow the airlines to return to the
negotiating table so that this dispute can
be resolved and the travelling public is
not inconvenienced any further."
Fiji stands ready to have this matter
resolved amicably for the mutual
benefit of both our countries," he
added.
Meanwhile, Fiji Airways has stopped
bookings for Honiara flights and the
airline company says this will remain
until the suspension is lifted.
The airline, through its Reservations

responsibility for the dispute rested

with Solomon Islands.
By refusing to allow Fiji Airways
to operate its Honiara flight on
successive Saturdays, the Solomon
Islands government has given Fiji
no choice but to respond. We regret
the inconvenience to the travelling
public but this action was triggered by
Solomon Islands and the responsibility
lies with Honiara," he said.
Sayed-Khaiyum said there had been
a disagreement between the airlines
of the two countries over sharing the
direct route but Fiji had anticipated
that the dispute could be settled in the
normal commercial manner.
We had hoped that this could be
resolved amicably between Fiji Airways
and Solomon Airlines but unfortunately,
the Solomon Islands government chose
to intervene unilaterally to prevent Fiji

Port Moresby and Port Vila.
Fiji Airways Manager Public Relations
and Communications, Shane Hussein
said while they are working hard to
ensure the disruption to customers is
minimised, visa entry requirements
in some passport holders for some
countries prolong this.
In addition, some alternative routes to
/ from Honiara are not available daily,
which causes longer wait times.
He said Fiji Airways is providing
disrupted
passengers
with
accommodation and meals where
required and the airline understands
the frustrations of passengers and
appreciates their patience during this
time and remains hopeful of a speedy
resolution to this situation.

WAF Budgets $14M To End

Intermittent Supply

Water Authority of Fiji is working on a

$14million budget to end intermittent
water supply to 67 identified areas
around the country. And the Authority
has plans to end the intermittent supply
by the end of this year.
WAF Corporate Communications
Officer Navinesh Kumar said there are
a number of solutions they have been
using to see that their customers get 24
hours of supply.
There are a number of solutions to
addressing intermittent supply areas
throughout the country and because of
these other works, these areas will be
complimented."
He said their work should see the
reconfiguration of the Water model
network using a state of the art
computer software to simulate the
present operation and at the same time
consider future demand growths in these
intermittent areas, different projects
will also be carried out throughout the
country for improvement and upgrade of
existing Water reticulation system which
involves laying larger diameter of pipes

and installing Air valves in the system to

improve hydraulics in the system.
The Authority will also install booster
pumping stations to boost the pressure
in the system as they also look to
implement a non- revenue programme
which consist of different array of
activities such as Installation of
pressure management systems to bring
down excessive pressures in some
areas in order to reduce the leakages in
the system.
These activities will also see the
introduction of leak detection and leak
surveillance activities and replacement
of defective water meters to manage
water demand.
Kumar said they were currently
installing
new
treatments
and
improvements to their current treatment
plants. These works will contribute
into the current system and will impact
WAF's current supply.
All of the above mentioned works
will greatly impact the elimination of
the 67 key intermittent supply areas on
the radar throughout the country.

Bank To Buy Back Shares

THE Bank of South Pacific has announced
its intentions to undertake a buyback
program to buy back about kina 15million
($F11.2m) worth of its own shares.
At present prices, this represents about
1,875,000 million shares or less than
0.5 per cent of BSP's issued shares.
BSP
Group
chairman
Kostas
Constantinou said the buyback was
set to open on the day following the
announcement and would continue for
about 12 months.
"The buyback program will continue
BSP's capital management strategy to

achieve a balance between returning

capital, retaining sufficient flexibility
to invest capital, pursuing growth
options and maintaining strong credit
metrics," he said in a statement.
"BSP intends to enter the market from
time to time to purchase shares pursuant
to the buyback. Under the buyback,
shareholders are invited to sell up to a
maximum of 1000 BSP shares of each
registered holding.
"BSP will pay any brokerage on shares
brought back. Selling shareholders will
not pay brokerage."

Challenges For Market Vendor

A RETAILER is feeling the pinch of an
increase in the price of vegetables sold
by farmers in the Salad Bowl area of Fiji.
And according to Suva market vendor
Ritesh Prasad, business has been
challenging in the past few years.
"Farmers can sometimes be very
demanding and some of them have
increased the price of their vegetables,"
he said.
"We used to pay less for the vegetables
but now we are paying double the
price. We priced our eggplants for $2
a heap from the $25 bag we buy from
farmers. We continue to sell a heap for
$2 despite buying a bag for $40.

"We used to get three kinds of

vegetables for about $100-$200. We
are spending more than $300 and we
continue to negotiate prices with the
farmers from Sigatoka."
He said farmers were also facing
challenges such as a change in weather
conditions and flooding, which had
affected their farms.
He said there were times when business
progressed well, adding he had nine
stalls at the market and paid $26.10 a
day.
"Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays are
the only days I receive good business
from customers," he said.

$392M Deficit

PROVISIONAL data for Fiji's balance

of payments for the March quarter of
this year showed a current and capital
account deficit of $392.7million.
The statistical record of economic
transactions between Fiji and the rest
of the world also placed the country's
financial account deficit at $302.1m.
In an update of the flow of money
into and out of the country for the
March quarter 2014, government
statistician Epeli Waqavonovono said
the current account balance for the
March quarter of 2014 showed a net
outflow of $393.9m, a slight decrease
when compared with the $416m net
outflow in the corresponding quarter
last year.
"Net goods deficit improved by
$114.3m from $665.7m to $551.4m,
largely because of a decrease in
the imports of machinery, transport
equipment and leased aircraft," he said.
"Net services surplus increased by
$22.7m from $222.7m to $245.4m,
largely due to an increase in tourism
earnings.

In terms of net primary income deficit,

he said, this increased by $117.2m
from $69.8m to $187m because of an
increase in reinvested earnings.
Mr Waqavonovono said net secondary
income surplus increased by $2.3m
from $96.8m to $99.1m and attributed
to an increase in personal transfers.
For Fiji's capital account, which
tracked the flow of aid and grants
either in cash or kind for projects such
as capital development and equipment
purchases, Mr Waqavonovono said
a net inflow of $1.2m was recorded
during the review period.
He said this was a slight decrease of
$0.1m from the $1.3m figure recorded
a year earlier.
"In terms of Fiji's financial account,
which describes the change in
ownership of international assets and
liabilities, a net borrowing of $302.1m
was recorded in the March quarter," he
said.
"This consisted of net outflows of
$285.4m in equity and net inflows of
$16.7m in debts.

announcement of the bonus rates of

about 31-52 per cent in Suva.

Mr Dhar said 5 per cent of the surplus
would go to the Government of India,
adding more than 55,000 policyholders
would benefit from the bonus, which
was credited to their accounts on July

Price Concern

FIJI consumers are paying premium

price for poor quality new clothes,
and the high prices are forcing them to
opt for second-hand clothing, says the
Consumer Council of Fiji.
The consumer watchdog raised the
issue this week following concerns
from the public of the rising costs of
clothing.
Council CEO Premila Kumar said they
had highlighted this issue in its 2014
Budget submission.
"The council had requested for the
reduction of import duties on clothing
and garments," she said in a statement.
"Personal garments and clothes have
fiscal duty of 32 per cent plus 15 per
cent value added tax. This is resulting
in higher prices for consumers.
"Fiji consumers are paying premium
price for poor quality new clothes
which comes in as seconds with
visible signs such as broken or crooked
stitches, button holes poorly stitched,

threads hanging or buttons missing.

"The council had requested in its
budget submission that fiscal duty be
reduced on clothes.
"The high prices of new clothes are
forcing consumers to opt for secondhand clothing."
Mrs Kumar said there was a boom in
the second-hand clothing business
in Fiji because consumers could not
afford new quality clothes.
However, she said, consumers had
also raised concerns on the high prices
being charged by second-hand clothes
retailers, despite these being "used"
items.
"Hygiene is another major concern
for consumers of second-hand clothes
as there is a lack of appropriate
regulations to address health and safety
issues," Mrs Kumar said.
Fiji Commerce Commission CEO
Bobby Maharaj noted the issue but said
they did not regulate prices for clothes.

Funding For Mine

VATUKOULA Gold Mines Limited
needs further funding of about
$US15million-$US20m ($F27.52m$F36.69m) on top of the $US40m
($F73.39m) committed by Zhongrun
International Mining Company Limited
to meet its production commitment.
General Manager Kevin Zhu said they
had identified the amount of funding
needed to achieve its longer-term
targeted production rate of 100,000
ounces of gold per annum.
"Recent structural changes in staffing
and departmental responsibilities have
been introduced together with revised
productivity bonus calculations to
provide increased incentive for
underground workers.
"New underground mobile equipment
(four trucks and two loaders) has been
purchased and is already in operation.
However, operating costs remain high
with the most significant of these being
power generation," Mr Zhu said.
He said Vatukoula gold mine was an old
mine by world mining standards and a
"quick fix" was neither anticipated nor
being sought, adding an incremental

and sustainable improvement was

being planned.
"Currently, production is on par with last
year cumulated from January to June."
In terms of their recent delisting on
AIM London Stock Exchange's
market for smaller, growing companies,
Mr Zhu said the directors of the parent
company in London (Vatukoula Gold
Mines Plc) conducted a review of the
benefits of share trading on AIM.
"In consultation with the company's
advisers and its major shareholders, it
was agreed that it was in the best interest
of the company and its shareholders as
a whole if the admission of the shares
to trading on AIM was cancelled," he
said.
"The board had concluded that the
commercial disadvantages and costs of
maintaining a listing at this time in the
company's development outweighed
the potential benefits."
He said the special resolution to
delist was put at a general meeting of
shareholders on June 23 this year and
was duly passed with the delisting
effective from July 1.

BANK DECLINED PROGRAM

Code-Share Conflict
THE present airline impasse between
the Solomon Islands and Fiji
governments has been driven by Fiji
Airways rather than the Government of
Fiji, says a statement from the Solomon
Islands Office of the Prime Minister.
It said this was because the changes
to the air service permit (ASP)
issued by Fiji's Attorney-General to
Solomon Airlines had an impact on the
commercial operation rather than the
safety of the whole operation.
"The crux of this matter is Fiji has
prevented Solomon Airlines from
carrying
code-share
passengers
between Nadi and Port Vila, Vanuatu
and that Solomon Airlines can only
code-share with any Fiji Airways
flights into or out of Fiji, which is
operated by Solomon Airlines," the
statement said.
It said the Solomon Islands
Government's relationship with Fiji
for air transport matters was based
on the air service agreement (ASA)
memorandum of understanding, which
was signed on January 5, 2010 in Suva.
"The second part to this ASA-MOU

was the ASP, which is a document that

regulates what Solomon Islands can do
in the way of uplifting and dropping
off of passengers and freight, and also
to regulate who it can code-share with
into and out of Fiji.
"In the past, Fiji has had the ability to
operate into Solomon Islands, whereas
Solomon Islands had generally been
happy to grant Fiji what it has asked for
as there had been no conflict between
the capabilities of both countries."
For example, it said, Fiji Airways
continued to operate into Solomon
Islands on a traditional agreement
with neither a foreign air operators
certificate issued by the Civil Aviation
Authority of Solomon Islands, nor
an air service licence issued by the
minister responsible.
"Now that Solomon Airlines has its
own international aircraft, Fiji is
dictating to its terms on how Solomon
Airlines can operate into Fiji.
"Because of this, it has essentially
interfered
with
commercial
arrangements
between
Solomon
Airlines, Air Niugini and Air Vanuatu."

Indigenous People Suffer The

Most, Say Leaders
Indigenous Fijians are the people
suffering the most from policies of
current government, say leaders of two
political parties.
Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra
Chaudhry made the comment during
the campaign launch of the party while
People's Democratic Party leader
Felix Anthony also echoed similar
sentiments during the party's manifesto
launch over the weekend. Chaudhry
said that the community most targeted
was the i-Taukei.
They were made to suffer numerous
assaults on their cultural identity and
traditional institutions.
As you know, the highest indigenous
institution, the Great Council of Chiefs,
was dismantled and chiefs virtually lost
their status in the political framework
of the nation, Chaudhry said.
Anthony last weekend said Our
indigenous brothers and sisters have
suffered worse; their tradition and
cultures have been under attack by this
government.
He said the removal of the Great
Council of Chiefs was an insult that

cannot go unchallenged.
However Prime Minister and FijiFirst
leader Voreqe Bainimarama during his
campaign in Kalabu, Nasinu last night
said the GCC was becoming politicised
during their existence.
Bainimarama said no one could take
away from the chiefs their status but the
problem was that they were becoming
more political in their approach.
During
the
SVT
(Soqosoqo
Vakavulewa ni Taukei) government,
there were more SVT chiefs, during
the SDL (Soqosoqo Duavata ni
Lewenivanua) government, most chiefs
in the BLV (Bose Levu VakaturagaGreat Council of Chiefs) were SDL
supporters, Bainimarama said.
He said after eight years of not having
the GCC, different chiefly positions in
the villages have not fallen out because
of the non existence of the GCC.
FijiFirst remains steadfast in their
decision saying the strength and health
of i-taukei culture and identity does not
depend on the existence of the GCC, an
institution created by the British during
Fijis colonial period.

Cassava In Abundant Supply

THERE is an over-supply of cassava
for export from the Western Division,
says Agricultural Marketing Authority
sales and marketing manager Alivereti
Yaya.
He said a lot of farmers were planting
cassava for export but the market
currently could not deal with the supply.
"This is why we are looking for other
potential markets overseas," he said.
"We have a lot of farmers in Sigatoka,

Nadi, Lautoka, Tavua and Ra."

He said competition from other
suppliers was also an issue.
"Our biggest competitors are Vietnam
and India.
"They do commercial farming which is
one of the reasons why they supply to
more markets than we do.
"Commercial farming has a more
quality driven focus and that is one of
the things that importers look at."

Fuel Prices Fall

The price of fuel has fallen across
the board from following the latest
quarterly review of prices by the
Commerce
Commission.
The
Commission based its decision on
exchange rate and market fluctuations.
The price of motor spirit fell three
cents from $2.63 to $2.60,
premix was down two cents from $2.55
to $2.53,
kerosene by five cents from $1.87 to
$1.82 and
diesel by four cents from $2.35 to
$2.31.
There is also a fall in LPG prices for the
third quarter of 2014. A 4.5 kilogram
cylinder is reduced by $1.49 from
$18.35 to $16.86 a fall of more than
8 per cent. A 12 KG cylinder comes
down by $3.95 from $48.92 to $44.97,
bulk LPG falls by 26 cents from 3.28 to
$3.02 and Auto Gas by 18 cents from
$2.29 to $2.11.
Attorney General and Minister for

Industry and Trade, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum while commenting on

the price drop said after a period
in which most prices have trended
upwards, its wonderful to see these
reductions across the board. He said
every sector
of the Fijian economy stood to benefit.
Whether you're an ordinary motorist,
a transport operator dependent on
diesel, someone living in a maritime
community and dependent on pre-mix,
or a householder dependent on LPG,
everyone stands to gain and will have
more money in their pockets."
As everyone knows, we are a price
taker in Fiji and have no control over
what happens in the international
marketplace. But its extremely
gratifying when price pressures are
downward and every Fijian can reap
the benefit, " Sayed-Khaiyum added.
**Prices will vary outside Viti Levu
and Vanua Levu.

Higher Number Of Sex Workers,

Report Reveals
The HIV epidemic in Fiji is not
expanding through sex workers, the
Integrated Behavioural and Biological
Survey (IBBS) and Size Estimation of
Sex Workers in Fiji: HIV Prevention
Project report revealed.
The report, launched Tuesday by
the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau,
was the first large-scale quantitative
research on sex workers in Fiji which
aims to help understand the nature
of sex work in Fiji, rates of HIV and
STI infection among the sex worker
community and their knowledge and
behaviour around safer sex practices.
A total of 298 sex workers participated
in the IBBS survey with 297 valid
surveys for the behavioural survey and
293 valid biological samples for the
biological component. This represented
just 38 per cent of the total estimated
sex worker population in Fiji.
Just three positive cases of HIV were
found suggesting sex workers are not
experiencing a concentrated epidemic
and that the HIV epidemic in Fiji is not
expanding through sex workers, the
report stated.
Nadi, the report revealed, had
particularly high rates of syphilis and
hepatitis B infection with Lautoka.
In contrast, Labasa had no cases of
hepatitis B and lower rates of syphilis
infection, although similar rates of
chlamydia to Suva.
Suva has a higher rate of gonorrhoea
infection than the other centres. The
report stated that transgender sex
workers appeared to be at higher risk
of HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis, while
female sex workers had increased risk
of chlamydia and gonorrhoea although
also high rates of syphilis.
ITaukei sex workers tended to have
higher rates of infection of hepatitis
B and syphilis, while Fijians of Indian
descent had higher rates of chlamydia.
National Advisor Family Health at the
Ministry of Health Dr Rachel Devi said
the report proved the HIV epidemic in
Fiji was not driven by sex workers.
When you look at HIV and AIDS
response globally it was said to be
mainly driven by men having sex with
men and sex workers and we wanted
to know if it was the same for the

country, Dr Devi said.

This study found and told us that sex
workers aren't driving the epidemic.
Meanwhile, sex workers make up
less than 0.01 per cent of Fiji's total
population.
This was revealed in the recentlylaunched Integrated Behavioural and
Biological Survey and Size Estimation
of Sex Workers in Fiji HIV Prevention
Project report.
The report estimated that in total, 857
female and transgender sex workers
were identified as actively working
in the previous two weeks before the
research began on June 7, 2012.
This was over twice as many previously
estimated by the sex worker community
prior to commencing the count.
An additional 45 male sex workers
were identified during the count
seven working in Suva, 28 in Lautoka
and 10 in Nadi although the report
strongly stated this was an undercount.
The majority of sex workers were
female (538) with just over a third
being transgenders (319).
Three quarters were identified as
iTaukei (646), with 18 per cent (153)
of Indian descent.
The report stated that 46 Chinese sex
workers were counted, majority of
who were located in Suva and one in
Lautoka.
The remaining ethnicities included
those identified as mixed race (five),
Rotuman (four) and Rabi (one). Suva
had the highest population of sex
workers (364).
These were subdivided into 240
working in Suva itself, 113 in Nasinu
and 11 in Nausori. Lautoka recorded
the second largest number with 255
sex workers, of which 170 worked in
Lautoka, 78 in Ba and seven working
mainly in Tavua.
The best estimate for Nadi was 152 sex
workers, however, the report stated this
was an undercount. Smaller areas like
Labasa were easier to estimate reliably.
It had 58 sex workers while Savusavu
had 28.
The report was commissioned by the
UNAIDS Pacific Office and Health
Ministry with assistance from the Fiji
National University (FNU).

Former US president Bill Clinton

across the country, an official said.
"Clinton arrived by a chartered flight.
He was taken to Oberoi Rajvilas Hotel,"
a police official said, adding that there
is no pre-fixed or official programme
of Clinton for Tuesday.
"On Wednesday, he (Clinton) visited
will a kitchen run by an NGO to
oversee a lunch programme that feeds
over one million school children daily
across India," official said
The kitchen in Jaipur is northern India's
largest run by the NGO Akshay Patra.

Dead Girl Who Awoke In Coffin At Her Funeral In Philippines

Reportedly Dies In Hospital
A THREE-year-old girl, who was
pronounced dead after a fever and who
awoke in a coffin during her funeral
ceremony, has reportedly died in hospital.
Dr Mary Silyne Asor-Cabahug, the
Municipal Health Officer of Aurora,
used a cardiac monitor to assess the
condition of the girl who came back
to life at her own funeral. She found
no signs of life and confirmed that the
child is dead, Noypistuff reported.
Dr Cabahug told the childs parents
to bury the dead body soon to prevent
diseases.
Earlier police confirmed the incredible
incident to the Philippine Star , after
footage of the child seemingly rising
from the dead at the church service in

Bayabas went viral over the weekend.

Citing accounts of the girls parents,
Police Senior Inspector Heidil Teelan
said the toddler was taken to a local
hospital on Friday after suffering a
severe fever.
During that time, the attending clinic
personnel and physician confirmed that
the young patient had no more pulse
and was clinically dead last Saturday
morning about 9am, Mr Teelan said.
The grave error was only discovered
when a funeral attendee removed the
cover of the girls coffin and saw her
head move.
Mr Teelan said the parents immediately
gave the girl water and rushed her to a
clinic for a check-up.

Disgruntled National Australia Bank Customer Offers

$2M Luxury Home As Prize In Campaign Over Loan
A disgruntled National Australia Bank
customer is offering his $2.6 million
home as a prize for people to join his
campaign against the bank.
Dr Peter Brandson says NAB made a
loan to a family member in 2004, and
alleges a bank employee falsified the
family member's income and assets to
allow them to borrow more than they
would have otherwise.
The New South Wales South Coast
GP says that while the loan allowed
the family to buy a luxury home with
ocean views, the burden of repaying it
tore the family apart.
"It was devastating," Dr Brandson said.
"The bank tried to throw us out of the
house with one week's notice. It caused
immense stress and a divorce as well,
with four kids involved."
Dr Brandson said while he had no legal
liability for the loan, he felt compelled
to assume responsibility for the
repayments.
"Later it appeared that the loan was
given simply to have access to my assets
and my income, and unfortunately
that led to a whole series of traumatic
events in our lives," he said.
He said NAB initially refused to
discuss his case - until it started getting
bad publicity.
Dr Brandson has mounted a campaign
against predatory lending by all the
banks, launching a website and making
submissions to the recent Senate
inquiry into the performance of the
Australian Securities and Investments
Commission (ASIC).
He has also offered his home as the
prize in a lottery as an incentive to get
people to join his campaign.
But he said he would not be testing his
claims of fraud in court.
"If I went to court, I'd most likely win.
But the law favours the banks, and
going through the process, I'd be lucky
to get a fraction of the damages," he
said.

In bad cases they're suicidal, and a lot

of times it's because they're carrying
more debt than they should have.
Dr Peter Brandson, bank campaigner
Dr Brandson is now saddled with a
multi-million dollar debt and thousands
of dollars a year in interest.
But in the past fortnight, three families

from different states have contacted

him with similar stories.
He said he saw the effects of predatory
lending on a regular basis in his role
as a GP.
"It's quite common to have people with
financial difficulties coming in and
feeling stressed," he said.
"Sometimes in bad cases they're
suicidal, and a lot of times it's because
they're carrying more debt than they
should have.
"And the banks obviously shouldn't
be giving loans to people who can't
manage them."
An NAB spokesperson said the bank
"is committed to responsible lending
practices and a customer's ability to
repay their debts is a critical part of
the loan approval process. NAB does
not comment on individual customers'
circumstances".
But Dr Brandson is not backing away.
"I told the NAB CEO Cameron Clyne
that I wasn't going to cop it, and I'm not
going to cop it," he said.
"And because of that I decided to take
up this campaign."
Dr Brandson has promised not to stop
until he gets the royal commission
into banking that the Senate inquiry
recommended.

SEVEN people, all members of the same

family, have died in a freak accident after
falling into an industrial-size septic tank
on a pig farm in western Poland.
Doctors have confirmed the death of
seven people, while an eighth is in hospital
in a serious condition, Magdalena
Bilinska, a fire brigade spokeswoman in
the village of Karczowka, told Polands
TVP public broadcaster.
The accident occurred on Thursday
on a family farm as the victims were

reportedly trying to empty the tank,

according to TVP.
A woman reportedly drove a tractor
onto the tanks cover, which gave way.
Seven family members who tried to
rescue her were likely overcome by
noxious gases and also fell into the
tank, which measures 50 square metres
by three metres deep.
The sole survivor, a 45-year-old
woman, was hospitalised in a serious
condition.

Dr Peter Brandson's house

Bank activists have alleged that
predatory lending is a widespread
practice in the banking industry.
Earlier this month, Commonwealth
Bank chief executive Ian Narev
apologised to customers who lost
money in the bank's multi-milliondollar financial planning scandal.
Banks defend employees, reward
malpractice: academic
Retired academic Dr Evan Jones has
been studying bank lending practices
to farmers and small and medium
enterprises since 2000.
He has argued bank incentive schemes
like bonuses for meeting certain
lending targets reward malpractice,
and the complicity goes right to the top.
"Even with an ultra-roguish lending
manager who breaks even those
[lending] rules and does something
criminal, the bank will ultimately
defend that manager and pursue the
borrower, even through the courts," he
said.

US Man Charged With Hugging

Child To Death
A US man has been charged with
involuntary manslaughter for hugging
a 14-month-old child so tightly that
the boy stopped breathing and died,
authorities say.
ROBERT Kemp, 27, was taken into
custody on Tuesday and released on
$US10,000 bond the next day. Kemp
is described as a family friend in a
news release from Orangeburg County
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.
An arrest warrant said Kemp killed
the child "by giving him a bear hug,
squeezing the victim so tight that the
victim stopped breathing as a result".
Jaylen Harris died from asphyxiation
on June 27, 2013, Orangeburg County
Chief Deputy Coroner Sean Fogle said
on Wednesday.
Kemp told deputies he was playing
with the child when he started to rub

his eyes like he was tired, so he put the

toddler in his crib on his back with his
bottle, according to an incident report.
Kemp said he went to the kitchen to
do some chores and realised he hadn't
heard the boy in a while. He went
back into the bedroom and noticed the
toddler on his stomach, unconscious
with his hands balled into fists,
according to the report.
Another person in the home, whose
name was blacked out on the report,
started CPR, but the boy could not be
resuscitated, according to the report.
If convicted, Kemp faces up to five
years in prison.
The sheriff's release didn't say why
it took a year to bring charges, and a
spokeswoman for the sheriff said in an
email no more information would be
released.

A Texas actress was sentenced

to 18 years in a federal prison on
Wednesday on a biological weapons
charge for mailing letters containing
the toxic agent ricin to President
Barack Obama, former New York
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a gun
control advocate.
Shannon Guess Richardson, 36, whose
career included minor television roles
in shows such as "The Walking Dead,"
also will be subject to five years of
supervised release and restitution of
$367,000.
Richardson, shackled and dressed in the

brown uniform of an inmate, apologized

in a federal court in Texarkana, Texas,
to Obama, Bloomberg and Mark Glaze,
the director of Mayors Against Illegal
Guns, a group founded by Bloomberg
that lobbies for stricter gun laws.
"I never intended to hurt anyone," she
said.
A lawyer for Richardson and U.S.
prosecutors reached a plea deal in
December for the 18-year sentence.
Richardson, who could have faced
life in prison, said she took the deal
because she did not want to be "listed
as a terrorist."

Disney World Employees Arrested

For Abuse
DOZENS of employees at Florida amusement parks, including Disney
World, have been arrested in recent years for sex crimes involving children,
according to an investigation.
POLICE and court documents show
at least 42 arrests since 2006 of
amusement park employees, including
35 from Disney World in Orlando,
Florida, two SeaWorld employees and
five employees of Universal Studios
amusement park.
Those arrested included security
officers, tour guides, a costumer,
salesmen in gift shops and others.
None of the unrelated cases involved
guests at the parks.
Several of the arrests involved
possession of child pornography or
police sting operations in which men
solicited sex with people they believed

were minors.
Disney spokeswoman Jacquee Wahler
stressed the park's commitment to
keeping children safe and noted
extensive background checks on
employees.
"Providing a safe environment for
children and families is a responsibility
we take very seriously," she told
German news agency DPA.
"The numbers reported by CNN
represent one one-hundredth of one
per cent of the 300,000 people we have
employed during this time period."
Disney World employs 70,000 people
at its resort in Florida.

Great White Shark Probably

Choked To Death On Sea Lion

Earlier this week the shark, which

was about four metres long, was
seen thrashing in shallow waters at
Coronation Beach, north of Geraldton.
Its carcass, which had been fitted with
an acoustic tag, washed up on the same
beach on Tuesday.
The Department of Fisheries says
research scientists have found the
shark had no visible signs of injury or
disease, but had a large Australian sea
lion stuck inside its throat.
The department's principal research
scientist Dr Rory McAuley said
the shark may have been thrashing
around in waters trying to dislodge the
blockage.
"This could explain why the shark was
exhibiting such unusual behaviour in

shallow waters off Coronation Beach,"

he said in a statement.
"Such a large object may have damaged
the shark's internal organs or impeded
water flow into his gills, contributing
to his death.
"Alternatively, the shark may have
accidentally become stranded in his
attempts to get rid of the obstruction."
The department has also confirmed that
the shark was tagged in South Australia
in January this year.
Dr McAuley says tissue and vertebral
samples were taken for future genetic,
age and growth, ecological and
population assessment studies.
"This information will be useful in
improving our understanding about
white sharks," he said

Elena and Brian had been keen on

Hopeful and eager to start their family,

The agency soon matched Elena

news, Elena and Brian spent the next

A week before the flight to go meet

that it was under investigation.

The visa office told them that there

Douglas Garland Charged With Murder Of Nathan

O'brien, Kathy And Alvin Liknes
Calgary police say evidence indicates 3 family members are dead, but bodies have not been found

Douglas Garland has been charged

with first-degree murder in the deaths
of Calgary residents Kathy and Alvin
Liknes, as well as second-degree
murder in the death of the couple's fiveyear-old grandson, Nathan O'Brien.
The charges come a day after police
announced that the search for the
family had become a triple murder
investigation. Police believe there is
enough evidence to say the three are
dead, but their bodies have not been
recovered.
Garland was arrested early Monday
in a field near his home property and
escorted to a Calgary police station late
Monday night.
He was out on bail on an unrelated
charge of identity theft laid last week
and police say by being in the field at
night, he broke the conditions of his
release.
He had been considered a "person of
interest" by police up until he was
charged in the murders of Nathan and
the Likneses.
The 54-year-old hung his head and said
nothing to the cameras on his way into
the Calgary arrest processing unit.
Criminal history
He was arrested early Monday morning
near the Airdrie acreage that has been

at the centre of the investigation. The

acreage belongs to his parents and was
the site of police investigation in 1992
that led to charges of drug trafficking
and possession of stolen property
after Garland was caught making
amphetamines.
A document from the Tax Court of
Canada indicates Garland was later
discovered living under the stolen
identity of a 14-year-old car crash
victim from Cardston, Alta.
Garland appeared in court on
Wednesday.
It's been previously reported that
Garland has connections to the Liknes
family. His sister, Patti Garland, is in
a common-law relationship with Alvin
Liknes's son.
Garland and Alvin Liknes were also
involved in a patent dispute and that
there was "bad blood" between them
because of business dealings that had
gone sour.
Court records also show that both
Alvin and Kathy Liknes had declared
bankruptcy in the past Alvin in
1994 and Kathy just two years ago.
According to records, Liknes was also
involved in several civil lawsuits in the
1980s and early 1990s.
'Extraordinary search efforts'

Nathan and his grandparents went

missing more than two weeks ago
from a home in the southwest Calgary
community of Parkhill.
They disappeared after an estate sale at
the property, which belonged to Kathy
and Alvin Liknes. Police said there
was evidence that a violent crime had
occurred there.
The couple had recently bought a house
in Edmonton and were selling some of
their things before they made the move.
They had been planning to spend some
time in Mexico before moving into the
Edmonton house.
The offence date listed on charges
against Garland is June 30 the
day the three family members were
reported missing by Nathan's mother,
Jennifer O'Brien.
There has been a massive round-theclock search for the trio involving
more than 200 police officers. Police
have also followed up on more than
900 tips from the public.
"There's already been extraordinary
search efforts as large as I've seen in
this country in a long time," said retired
homicide investigator Dave Perry on
Monday.
"And now that the bodies haven't been
recovered, I think that the search is

going to expand and who knows where

it's going to take them."
Organizers say a couple of local
mothers wanted to do something to
help, hoping to find clues that could
lead to the remains of Nathan and his
grandparents, and it just spread from
there.
"We just feel helpless, we want to do
something," said Laura Cameron, one
of the organizers of the civilian search.
"We've had an overwhelming number
of people joining us and supporting
us."
The searchers are sharing their maps
with the Calgary Police Service and
say there are a few areas they plan to
target.
Cameron says they have been advised
by police to be careful not to tamper
with evidence and so are not sharing
their search plans publicly so as to
keep rogue searchers from potentially
damaging clues.
She says the community is having a
difficult time believing the three family
members are dead.
"Because there weren't bodies that
were found, I still just couldn't believe
that [Nathan] could be dead ... we just
want to keep looking until something
tells us to stop looking."

Baldev Kalsi Assaulted While In Custody On Attempted Murder

Charge
Surrey Sikh temple leader was charged after his wife Narinder was attacked over weekend

The president of Brookside Sikh

Temple in Surrey, B.C., has been
attacked while in custody awaiting trial
for attempted murder.
Baldev Singh Kalsi, 66, leader of the
Gurdwara Sahib Brookside, was taken
into police custody after his wife,
Narinder Kaur Kalsi, was found in
severe medical distress at their home
in South Surrey last Sunday.
Kalsi had been charged with aggravated
assault on Monday, but the charges were
upgraded to attempted murder Tuesday.
According to Cpl. Bert Paquet, Kalsi
was then attacked on Tuesday night
around 8.30 p.m. PT, while at pretrial
facilities in Surrey.
"Our officers attended to the facility
as well as a local hospital where Kalsi
was transported," said Paquet. "Kalsi
suffered facial injuries, however he is
expected to make a full recovery."
Paquet says Serious Crimes is
investigating the assault and a 42-yearold man has been identified as a suspect.
The assault does not appear to be linked
to the ongoing homicide investigation.
Canadian Sikhs 'shocked and saddened'

Meanwhile,
the
World
Sikh
Organization of Canada has issued
a "call to action", offering access
to a network of psychologists and
counsellors free of charge.
In a press release, Jasbir Kaur
Randhawa, WSO vice president for
B.C., said the organization is shocked
and saddened by the tragic assault
against Narinder Kaur Kalsi.
The entire community is shocked
by this incident. Violence against
women is a serious problem that needs
to be addressed by the South Asian
community, including Sikhs," said
Randhawa.
"Early intervention and role modeling
are key to making a difference. The
WSO has been involved in several
initiatives to put violence against
women on the agenda in the community
and a lot more work needs to be done."
According to the press release, the
Brookside Gurdwara participated in
a WSO campaign against violence to
women last year, by providing baked
goods and care packages to residents
in local womens shelters.

Surrey RCMP Moving Into Old

City Hall

Surrey Mounties will be moving into

the old city hall, saving Surrey $36
million it planned to spend on RCMP
district expansion.
Surrey's police committee decided
Monday to go ahead and lease a section
of the old city hall to the Mounties in
the near future.
Surrey had planned to spend $36
million for a separate expansion, an
expense that's no longer required.
It effectively trims the net cost of the
move to a new city hall from $99.5
million down to $63.5 million.
Surrey RCMP are expected to move
into the south tower of the old city hall,
a 57,000-sq.-ft. space that includes the
old council chambers.
Which section of the RCMP will move
into the old building has not yet been
determined.
Coun. Barinder Rasode has concerns

about having the RCMP centralized,

rather than part of the district stations.
She says it means officers will respond
to calls from the central detachment,
instead of having someone embedded
in that community.
Coun. Linda Hepner said Tuesday
she was assured by the Officer in
Command that an extremely robust
community policing model would
remain in place.
The RCMP will share the building with
Crown Counsel and probations offices
which are taking, which are taking
45,000 square feet of the building on
the main floor.
That represents about $550,000
annually for the city.
About 30,000 square feet of the old
city hall is still unclaimed, including
the west tower, with 21,000 sq. ft. and
10,000 sq. ft. in the north annex.

Brookside Temple president Baldev Singh Kalsi is shown in a photo from

a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Ramgarhia Society,
which manages the Gurdwara. (Gurdwara Sahib Brookside)
WSO president Dr. Amrtpal Singh
Shergill
says
statements
and
expressions of regret are not enough.
"We must continue to do more to raise
awareness about violence against
women and ensure adequate resources

and supports exist for our community.

"Our thoughts are with Narinder Kaur
Kalsi and we pray that she makes a full
recovery."
As of Wednesday, Kalsi remained in
hospital, on life support.

Anonymous Stranger Gives

Ottawa Woman $128,000 For
Life-Saving Treatment
A critically ill Ottawa mother said she
collapsed when a complete stranger
showed up at her door and handed her
a $128,000 bank draft for a life-saving
medical procedure in the U.S.
Twelve years ago, Stephanie Headley
was
diagnosed
with
systemic
scleroderma, a serious autoimmune
disease. The disease is causing her
skin, arteries, veins and internal organs
to harden.
Over the years, Headleys condition
deteriorated and she now requires
heavy-duty painkillers every two
hours.
The 48-year-old single mother of
four found hope in stem cell therapy
offered at a Chicago hospital. But the
treatment costs US$125,000, so her
family launched an online appeal to
raise money.
On July 3, a stranger arrived at
Headleys door wearing a cap, big
sunglasses and jacket zipped-up all the
way to his neck. He did not introduce
himself.
Without a word, the man handed
Headley an envelope.
Just as he turned to leave, I said: God
bless you, and he smiled -- big smile
-- and then he turned around and left,
Headley told CTV Ottawa.
Headley was shocked when she opened
the envelope. Inside was a bank draft
for CAN$128,000.
I just started crying, she said. I
dropped to the floor, and I dropped my

(oxygen) tank and I just collapsed,

she said.
Headleys daughter Skylar Skinkle
said she didnt believe the bank draft
was real at first.
After I stopped crying, I said: This is
my moms life on a piece of paper.
Headley now has an appointment on
Sept. 22 to begin the stem cell therapy.
The identity of her benefactor is still a
mystery.
Other donations are still coming in,
including one from Bob McBride,
who didnt know Headley but felt
compelled to help.
It just touched me very, very much
McBride said of Headleys story.
Shes got all the cards stacked against
her and hopefully this can help save
her life.

Surrey Memorial Hospitals LegoBrick Tower Goes On The Auction

Block

A group of builders from the Fraser

Valley recently joined forces to
demonstrate that its possible to
construct a new hospital from the
ground up in about 90 hours with
around 7,000 LEGO bricks.
The result is a two-foot tall replica
of Surrey Memorial Hospitals new
Critical Care Tower. The structure
even has its own ambulance, helicopter
and medical staff all made of small
plastic bricks.
The replica was commissioned by Jane
Adams, president and CEO of Surrey
Memorial Hospital Foundation, as a
unique auction item for an upcoming
charity golf tournament organized
by EllisDon, the company that
orchestrated the construction of the
real Critical Care Tower.
The idea of creating a LEGO tower
came to Adams after she learned that
the Child Life specialists at Surrey
Memorial use these simple building
blocks to help young patients and
siblings in the Childrens Health Centre
and the pediatric emergency department
cope with their time in the hospital.
Earlier this summer, LEGO enthusiast
and Langley resident Lee Wager
rallied members of the Abbotsford
LEGO User Group (AKA AbbyLUG)
to volunteer their time and take on the
challenge.

EllisDon supplied Wager with photos

and drawings, and he also paid a visit
to the hospital for a closer look.
He notes that one of the biggest
challenges of using LEGO to building
architectural pieces is working with
geometric shapes and figuring out how
to accommodate unique features, such
as curved walls.
For the hospital tower, Wager and the
group had to replicate the one-of-akind windows above the lobby and
source out enough blue bricks needed
to build the distinctive coloured walls
of the main building.
Its all part of the LEGO building
challenge, he says. Its fun to try to
create or innovate with LEGO, because
it has its limitations.
The LEGO enthusiasts creation will
be on the auction block at the golf
tournament, set for July 22 at the
Morgan Creek course in South Surrey.
The golfers and guests will include
many of the contractors, trades and
suppliers involved in building healthcare facility in Surrey. Adams expects
lots of bids.
We received incredible support
from the construction industry when
we were raising money to purchase
equipment for the Tower, so I think this
unique souvenir will be a hot item at
the auction.

Erica Barnes Gets Citizenship

Papers And Apology From
Canada

Six-year immigration battle gets 2nd

look after CBC story
A teenage girl's six-year-long battle
for Canadian citizenship is finally over
after Immigration Canada admitted it
made a mistake and lost her approval
due to a technical error.
The error was uncovered after CBC
News ran a story on the plight of the
19-year-old and her B.C. family.
Orphaned South African girl stuck in
Canadian citizenship limbo in B.C.
In an email to the CBC, Citizenship
and Immigration Canada (CIC) said
Erica Dipuo Barnes's citizenship was
approved in 2013, but not entered into
its global case management system due
to a technical error.
Spokeswoman Nancy Caron said
the error has been fixed and Barnes's
citizenship papers are now on their way.
"We recognize that this has caused
undue frustration. We apologize for the
error and delay."
Barnes is both pleased and angry after
the mistake made by Canadian officials
in South Africa meant she could not
work, study or even get medical care
for the last year.
"I just think that is outrageous ... they're
pretty much saying, 'Oh well,' like you
can make up for it.
"But I'm actually glad," said Barnes,
hugging her father, Vince Barnes. "It's
a relief."
Immigration Minister Chris Alexander
was in Vancouver Wednesday but did
not want to talk about his staff's mistake.
"Anyone who has suffered because of
an oversight of our staff, anyone who
has suffered as a result of a mistake ...
We will do everything in our power
not to repeat those mistakes," said the
minister.
"I'm always sorry to hear of mistakes
that happened, or delays. Paperwork
sometimes goes missing."
Barnes's father says no one from the
immigration department has called or
apologized to them.
"I'd actually like him [the minister] to
physically apologize to Erica, because
it's ... this young lady that has been put
through hell."
Girl stuck in South Africa
Barnes was orphaned in South Africa
at the age of seven after her father was
killed in a robbery. She was adopted by
family friends, Canadian Vince Barnes
and his British wife, Ann.
The couple brought Barnes to Canada
to live in Surrey, B.C., and applied to
have her granted permanent residency
status. When she was 13, she wanted
to visit her grandmother back in South
Africa.
Her adoptive mother, Ann Barnes, said
she called Canada Immigration to see
if her daughter could travel and was
told it wouldn't be a problem.
CIC says Barnes shouldn't have left
But when Barnes's permanent
residency card came through in 2008

while she was away in South Africa,

her citizenship was denied because she
wasn't in the country.
In its email, CIC explained that Barnes
had applied for permanent residency on
compassionate and humanitarian grounds
from within Canada because "it would cause
the applicant unusual or disproportionate
hardship to apply for permanent residence
from outside Canada."
When Barnes returned to South Africa,
the CIC's Caron said she no longer met
the criteria and that's why in August
2008 her application was refused.
For five years, Barnes was stuck in
South Africa, couch surfing with family
and friends, at times going hungry and
on the street.
But two years ago, Barnes's adoptive
mother called the Canadian Embassy and
spoke to an official who informed her that
being adopted by a Canadian actually
entitled her daughter to citizenship.
The couple applied immediately and last
August, Barnes got a one-time visa and
was on the next flight back to Canada.
Barnes's adoptive parents also
received a letter from the Canadian
High Commission in South Africa
saying their daughter had been granted
Canadian citizenship.
But a year later the family, having
received no papers from the
government, were again left wondering.
When CBC interviewed Erica for this
story, she broke down in tears over the
uncertainty of her situation.
However, following our story, CIC
discovered a technical error had caused
the approval to be lost for a year.
Barnes's papers are now on their way
and the family is breathing a sigh of
relief. Erica Barns is anxious to go to
college and study nursing.
Barnes's father said bureaucrats have
no idea the suffering their sloppy work
can cause.
"Not including not being able to work
or anything, Erica's got bad asthma and
she's been in the hospital three times,"
he said.
The Barnes family will now be asking
Canadian immigration officials to
reimburse them the thousands of
dollars they've spent on their daughter's
medical bills over the last year
now that it's clear she was entitled to
Canadian medical care all along.

Steps To Help A Child Stop Lying

And Tell The Truth

All kids lie sometimes and usually,

it shouldnt be because for alarm.
However, when kids find that lying
helps them stay out of trouble or
helps them gain attention from their
peers, it can become a bad habit. Its
important for parents to address lying
in a straightforward manner that will
promote honesty and discourage
dishonesty.
1. Establish a Household Rule about
Telling the Truth
Create a clear household rule that
stresses the importance of everyone
telling the truth. This will ensure
that your children understand your
expectations and values about honesty.
2. Role Model Honesty
Role model the behavior you want
to see from your child. This means,
telling the truth all the time. Kids
cant distinguish little white lies
from other lies. So dont let your child
overhear you tell your friend, I would
love to help but I have a headache,
if youre feeling fine. Your child will
imitate what he watches you do.
3. Talk about Telling the Truth
Versus Lying
No matter how old your child is, its
important to talk about honesty versus
lying. Young children often need help
understanding what it means to tell the
truth. Make sure your child has a good
understanding of what telling the truth
means.
Telling the truth versus brutal honesty
is another skill that children of all
ages can benefit from discussing. For
example, kids need to learn that they
dont necessarily need to announce to
their friend, Thats an ugly shirt, just
because its honest. Balancing honesty
with compassion is a sophisticated
social skill.
4. Distinguish the Reason for the Lie
There are three main reasons kids
lie; fantasy, bragging, or to prevent
negative consequences. When you
distinguish the likely reason for the
lie, it can help you develop a plan for
responding to it.
Preschoolers often tell fantasy lies. If
your child says, I flew to Disney World
this morning, ask, Is that something
thats really true? Or something you
wish could be true? This can help
kids understand the difference between

reality and make believe.

If a child lies because hes bragging, it
may be that he has low self-esteem or
wants to gain attention. He may benefit
from learning new social skills and
from engaging in positive activities to
boost his self-esteem.
All kids lie to get out of trouble
sometimes. Its important that their
lies arent successful. Instead, make it
clear to kids that you will be doublechecking the facts.
5. Give One Warning
It can be helpful to give kids one
warning when you are fairly confident
you caught them in a lie. For example,
say, Ill give you one more chance
to tell me what happened. If I catch
you lying, you will receive an extra
consequence.
6. Give an Extra Consequence
Give your child an extra consequence
when you catch him lying. For
example, instead of just taking away
his electronics for the day, give him
extra chores to do as well. Take away
privileges or use restitution as a
consequence for lying.
7. Discuss Natural Consequences
Talk to your child about the natural
consequences of lying. Explain that as
a result of his lying, there will likely be
times that you wont be able to believe
him, even when hes telling the truth.
8. Provide Positive Reinforcement
for Honesty
Catch your child telling the truth and
provide positive reinforcement. Praise
him by saying, I know that must have
been hard to tell me that you broke that
dish, but Im so glad that you chose to
be honest about it.
9. Help Your Child Re-Establish
Trust
If your child has a bad habit of lying,
develop a plan to help him re-establish
trust. Consider establishing a behavior
contract that will help you know when
hes ready for more privileges based on
his willingness to be honest.
10. Seek Professional Help
There are times when lying can be
a big problem for children. If your
childs lying seems to be pathological,
or it causes problems for your child at
school or with peers, seek professional
help to address his lying.

Becoming A Morning Person For

Good

Waking up early not only allows more

time for productivity and leisure, it
also makes one's days less stressful.
Go to sleep when you are tired, create
the right night routine and environment
so that it makes it easier to wake up on
time every morning.
* Get more sleep: Just like we need to
make time for working out, we need to
schedule seven to nine hours of sleep
into our day because it is one of the
most essential parts of our health. What
we get from a good night's rest cannot
be supplemented elsewhere.
* No screens in the bedroom: Make it
a point to turn off the television at a
certain time. Similarly, don't use your
laptop or tablet in bed. Restrict your
contact with screens at least an hour
before bed.
* Go to sleep when you are tired: When
we have had an especially exhausting
day, we tend to ignore our brains when
they are telling us we are drained
and tired hours before we normally
are. Don't ignore what your body is

telling you. Just like waiting too long

to go to bed after taking a sleeping
pill, powering through your tiredness
instead of going right to bed can have
adverse effects.
* Create the right night-time routine
and environment: Be it print books or
tea with chamomile or lavender, make
sure to choose something that will be
a calming experience and one you can
repeat every night. Over time, your
body will get used to this ritual and
know when it is time to shut down and
go to sleep. The environment you go
to sleep in is also important. If it is
clean and uncluttered, it will be easier
for your mind to be as well. Again,
your room should be a tranquil space
used almost solely for relaxing and
sleeping.
* Always have something to look
forward to: Schedule your week so that
you have something to look forward
to, even if that something is calling a
friend to catch up, or trying out a new
place for lunch.

Diabetes Sufferers Struggling

With Control

JUST one in five people diagnosed

with Type 2 diabetes over the past four
years feel they have it under control,
British research has found.
NATIONAL Diabetes Audit data also
shows that just 22.4 per cent of those
who have had Type 2 diabetes for up
to four years meet recommended levels
for blood glucose, cholesterol and
blood pressure.
Diabetes UK said it was concerning
due to the increased risk of future
complications such as kidney failure
and amputation. It warned that better
support should be provided to sufferers
as soon as they are diagnosed.
There is evidence that unless Type 2

diabetes is controlled well at the start,

the body adapts to having high glucose
levels and the longer this goes on, the
more difficult it is to get under control.
But the charity said that at the moment
just 14 per cent of people with Type
2 are offered diabetes education soon
after being diagnosed, despite the
National Institute for Health and Care
Excellence recommending that this be
offered to everyone with the condition.
Diabetes UK is calling for the
Government and NHS to do more
to ensure people get the support
and education they need after being
diagnosed to enable them to manage
their condition.

A British study has suggested that

just 20 minutes of exercising, thrice a
week, could drastically reduce the risk
of Alzheimer's.
Even getting off the bus one stop early
and walking the rest of the way could
help in preventing the debilitating
illness.
A third of all cases are due to lifestyle
reasons including inactivity, obesity,
smoking, high blood pressure and
having a poor education, according to
Cambridge researchers. But of these,
a lack of exercise was found to be the
single most important cause, as reported.
Researchers believe regular physical
activity ensures there is a steady flow
of oxygen-rich blood to the brain.
This is thought to prevent the build-up
of plaques "deposits of protein in the
brain" which cause Alzheimer's.
Researchers say adults can drastically
lower their risk even by just walking
to work.

Carol Brayne, from Cambridge

University's Institute of Public Health,
said: "The important message is that
there are aspects of healthy life which
reduce risk.
"This doesn't say we can prevent
dementia and Alzheimer's altogether.
But there is a proportion which is
preventable. Even just having a
vigorous walk few times a week and
ideally make it social event.
"It's really difficult for many people
to take exercise. If nothing else is
possible, even a walk will help. That's
what evidence suggests.
"So 20 minutes to half an hour, three times
a week. I would say to just fit something
into life in the best possible way. This
might be getting off the bus stop the next
stop up, and walk the last bit."
A total of 850,000 Britons have been
diagnosed with dementia "including
Alzheimer's" although this will more than
double by 2050 as the population ages.

Older age women should be prescribed

more moderate to high intensity activity
rather than medicine as a treatment
which would eventually reduce the risk
of death in them says QUT study.
QUT's Institute of Health and
Biomedical Innovation claimed that
instead of the conventional mode of
physical and mental health medication
doctors should prescribe customized
exercises.
This study stands on the grounds of
five years of research looking into
the impact of exercise on mental
and physical health in women over
the age of 50, and clearly shows that

moderate to vigorous intensity activity

could have mental and physical health
benefits.
The research also added that older
women should be doing high intensity
exercise for at least 30-45 minutes five
times a week, but it should be tailored
to ensure that its high intensity is
enough to obtain the positive sustained
effects of exercise.
By promoting healthy ageing has
become an important strategy for
reducing morbidity and mortality. The
doctors should also develop exercise
programs that are home-based and
easy to incorporate as part of everyday
activities.

Treatment
Treatment options for prostatitis may
include:
-antibiotics to fight bacterial
infections
-alpha-adrenergic blockers to relax
the muscles near the prostate to relieve
pressure on the urethra and allow -urine
to flow more easily
-supportive pain control measures,
such as:
-fever or pain medication, hydration
(intravenous and oral fluids) and stool
softeners
-relaxation exercises for the muscles of
the pelvic floor
-warm baths that cover just the hips
and buttocks (sitz bath) to relieve pain
and discomfort
TURP to drain a prostatic abscess
The role of diet changes like avoiding
alcohol, spicy food and caffeine in the
treatment of prostatitis is not known.
The role of frequent ejaculation in the
treatment of prostatitis is unknown.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia
Also
called
benign
prostatic
hypertrophy
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
is enlargement of the prostate gland
due to an increased number of cells
(hyperplasia). Most of the growth
occurs in the transition zone of the
prostate. The prostate naturally gets
larger as men age. Almost all men by
the age of 70 will have some prostate
enlargement. BPH does not increase
the risk of prostate cancer.
Risk factors
Other than increasing age, there are no
risk factors for BPH.
Signs and symptoms
In the early stages of BPH, there are
no signs and symptoms. They appear
when the prostate begins to squeeze the
urethra and cause changes in bladder
habits:
-difficulty passing urine
-frequent urination (especially at night)
weak or slow urinary stream
-inability to empty bladder completely
-stopping or starting the urinary stream
-dribbling
-blood in the urine
Diagnosis
If the signs and symptoms of BPH are
present, or if the doctor suspects BPH,
tests will be done to make a diagnosis.
Tests may include:
-medical history and physical
examination
-digital rectal examination (DRE)
a questionnaire to measure how severe
the bladder problems are and how they
affect the man's quality of life
-urine studies
-urinalysis
-urine flow study (uroflometry)
-record of urine output over several 24-

hour periods
blood tests
-prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
-blood urea nitrogen (BUN)
-creatinine
-imaging
-kidney,
bladder
and
prostate
ultrasound
-ultrasound to determine how much
urine remains in the bladder after
urination (residual urine)
-transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided
biopsy
These tests are used to confirm the
diagnosis of BPH, rule out other
problems such as a urinary tract
infection or prostate cancer, and check
for any complications related to BPH.
Treatment
Treatment options for BPH may
include the following:
Active surveillance
Watchful waiting (active surveillance)
means watching closely for signs
or symptoms of disease progression
without giving any treatment. It may
be used with men who have few or
only mild symptoms.
Drug therapy
For men who are experiencing
symptoms of BPH and are upset or
disturbed by these symptoms, the
doctor may prescribe medications to
relieve symptoms.
5-alpha-reductase inhibitors
These drugs stop testosterone from
being changed into another form within
the prostate called dihydrotestosterone,
which is believed to cause the prostate
to enlarge. They work best in men with
large prostates. The medication takes
several months to shrink the prostate
and relieve symptoms.
The two drugs in this class are
finasteride (Proscar) and dutasteride
(Avodart). Side effects include:
decrease in sexual desire
-erectile dysfunction
-smaller amounts of semen with
ejaculation
-swollen and/or tender breasts
Alpha-adrenergic blockers
These drugs relax the muscles near
the prostate to relieve pressure on the
urethra and allow urine to flow more
easily. They do not shrink the size of
the prostate.
The most common drugs are:
-terazosin (Hytrin)
-doxazosin (Cardura)
tamsulosin (Flomax)
-alfuzosin (Xatral)
Side effects include:
-dizziness
-fatigue
-headache
-low blood pressure
-retrograde ejaculation
-Semen enters the bladder during

ejaculation instead of going out the

urethra.
Surgery
Surgery for BPH may be used for men
who have severe symptoms or are
completely unable to urinate or when
drug therapy has not worked.
Transurethral resection of the
prostate (TURP)
TURP is the removal of prostate tissue
through the urethra to reduce the size
of the prostate. It is the most common
surgical procedure done for BPH:
-Either general or spinal anesthesia is
used.
-A special tube with a light and camera
(resectoscope) is inserted through the
urethra into the prostate.
-The surgeon is able to see inside the
urethra, prostate and bladder.
-Excess tissue is trimmed from the
prostate around the urethra.
A catheter is placed into the bladder to
drain urine.
-The catheter is removed once the urine
becomes free of blood (usually after 24
hours).
Side effects of TURP include:
-bleeding
-infection
-retrograde ejaculation
-erectile dysfunction rare
-incontinence rare
Some men may need a second
procedure (10% of men after 10 years).
Other surgeries
Other forms of surgery, many similar
to TURP that may be used are:
-transurethral incision of the prostate
(TUIP)
One or 2 cuts are made in the prostate to
relieve the constriction of the urethra.
TUIP is used on smaller prostates.
transurethral needle ablation (TUNA)
-Prostate tissue is burned away using
radiofrequency
waves
delivered
through a needle.
transurethral
electrovaporization
(TUVP)
-Prostate tissue is burned away using
an electrical current.
transurethral microwave thermotherapy
(TUMT)
TUMT uses microwaves to destroy
excess prostate tissue.
-A microwave antenna is inserted
through the urethra, and the microwaves
heat and damage the prostate tissue.
holmium laser resection
-A holmium laser can be used to cut out
(enucleate) or vaporize the prostate.
photoselective vaporization of the
prostate (PVP)
-A powerful green laser is used to
vaporize the prostate.
It is photoselective because the red
prostate tissue selectively absorbs the
green laser.
The laser is delivered through a

cystoscope, and there is minimal

bleeding.
expandable braided wire-mesh urethral
stents
-Stents may be used to relieve urinary
obstruction caused by BPH.
high-intensity focused ultrasound
(HIFU)
HIFU is a minimally invasive
procedure that allows the surgeon to
destroy prostatic tissue using high
energy sound waves.
Long-term studies looking at the
effectiveness of these newer procedures
have not been done. Some are not being
used anymore due to poor mediumterm results (for example, TUNA and
TUMT). PVP is being done more often
because it provides good mediumterm results with fewer complications
compared to TURP. As yet, there is no
evidence that these newer procedures
are superior to TURP.
Some of these newer types of prostate
surgery may be available in some
centres in Canada, but they may not be
covered by provincial health plans.
Precancerous conditions of the prostate
Precancerous conditions of the prostate
have the potential to develop into
prostate cancer. With a precancerous
condition, abnormal changes have
taken place in the cells of the prostate.
Some of these abnormal changes may
turn into prostate cancer.
The most common precancerous
conditions of the prostate are:
-prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia
(PIN)
-proliferative inflammatory atrophy
(PIA)
-atypical small acinar proliferation
(ASAP)
Prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia
(PIN)
The well recognized precancerous
condition of the prostate is prostatic
intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN). It may
occur in several different areas of the
prostate at the same time (multifocal).
PIN is often found in the peripheral
zone of the prostate, where most
prostate cancers are also found. PIN
may be either low or high grade.
Only high-grade PIN is considered a
precancerous condition.
Not all high-grade PIN sites will
advance to prostate cancer during a
man's lifetime. It is difficult to predict
in an individual man if PIN will
progress to cancer. It may take more
than 10 years for PIN to progress to
prostate cancer.

Deepika Padukone To Finally Romance Salman Khan In Karan

Johars Shhuddhi

The leggy lass has apparently told

KJo that she will manage the dates of
her other projects and give time for
Shhuddhi
It didnt come as a surprise to us
when Salman Khan announced that
he is doing Karan Johars ambitious
project, Shhuddhi. While there isnt
any confirmation on as to who will
romance the Dabangg Khan in the
film, if our sources are to be believed,
Deepika Padukone has been finalised
to star opposite the Kick actor.
When Hrithik Roshan and Kareena
Kapoor Khan, who were originally cast
for the film opted out of the project,
KJo approached Dippy to be the new

female lead. But she chose Sanjay

Leela Bhansalis Bajirao Mastani
opposite alleged boyfriend Ranveer
Singh over Shhuddhi. However, now
that the film has been pushed to Diwali
2016, the Chennai Express actor has
told Karan that she will manage the
dates for Bajirao Mastani and give him
time. Plus, its a known fact that the
leggy lass has been wanting to share
screen space with Salman.
So there might not be any official
announcement on the heroine of
Shhuddhi, but we wont be surprised
if one fine day Karan tweets saying
Deepika Padukone has been finalised to
star opposite Salman Khan in Shhuddhi.

Shabana Azmi Launches Website

To Honour Father

Veteran Bollywood actor Shabana

Azmi has launched a website dedicated
to her poet father Kaifi Azmi.
The audio-visual website hosts videos,
poems, songs and gives an insight into
the life of the late poet.
Please check out official updated
website of Kaifi Azmi, Shabana
posted on Twitter along with the link.
Entitled as Kaifi Azmi ? A Rebellious
Poet, the website is divided into five
sections the legend, collection,
tributes, Mijwan and press.
The legend section talks about the
poets early life, achievements, his
contribution to films and connection
with Hyderabad.
The collection segment has the audio
and video of all the famous ghazals,
nazms and poems of him. Mijwan
throws light on Kaifis contribution to
the tiny village in Azamgarh.

It also shares many rare pictures of

Shabana and her father.

Ek Hasina Thi: Not Shaurya

Or Dev, Sanjeeda Sheikh To Be
Romanced By Hubby Aamir Ali!
The actor will be seen doing a cameo
with Sanjeeda Sheikh in Ek Hasina Thi
Sanjeeda Sheikh and Aamir Ali created
waves with their dancing skills in Nach
Baliye season 3 and emerged as the
winners of the dance reality TV show.
The couple is set to dazzle the small
screen again where the two will be
seen in the hit show Ek Hasina Thi.
An insider from the industry while
talking to an entertainment daily
revealed, Aamir will do a cameo with
Sanjeeda and the two have a few scenes
together. Their characters pretend to
get engaged.
The husband wife pair is reportedly

coming together on screen after a

long gap. The source further added,
Though they had been getting offers,
both had been busy with their respective
commitments. So, the timing never
seemed to match. But now the couple
is excited about coming together onscreen as it will be a treat for their fans.
The shoot for the episode will take
place soon.
We wonder what the angle to the
duos chemistry will be. Will Durga
(Sanjeeda Sheikh) pretend to be
engaged to her hubby in the show to
make Shaurya (Vatsal Seth) jealous or
does she have something else planned?

Aishwarya Sakhujas Main Naa

Bhoolungi To Go Off Air!

Sony Entertainment Televisions fiction

line up Desh Ki Beti Nandani and Jee
Lee Zara shut shop a while back
And with Amitabh Bachchans Yudh
replacing Bade Achhe Lagte Hain the
channel is hoping for things to take a
turn for good. With none of their other
recent fiction properties delivering on
the ratings front we now hear that the
thriller revenge Main Naa Bhoolungi
starring Aishwarya Sakhuja and Vikas
Manaktala is also on its way out.
This news was confirmed by parallel
lead Avinash Rekhi, Weve heard that
the show is coming to end. Though he
could not give a confirmation date on
the same. When we spoke to Aishwarya,
she denied any immediate news of her
show going off air. She said, I have
not heard any such development . We
will not be going off air at least until

August for we have got an extension

until then. I hope our show goes on
and on but if the worst does happen, I
will take a months break and then start
looking for fresh projects.
When asked if low ratings were
responsible for the shows exit? Avinash
said,No, I think so. The story was written
with Shikhas (Aishwarya Sakhuja )
revenge in mind and now that her purpose
is getting over, we will end the show.
Low ratings seem to be a bug bear with
poor Avinash for his debut show Chaal
on Colors also sank due to the same
reason. But the actor defends TV stars,
Shows work or dont work depending
on audiences likes and dislikes ,it
really dont mean that the show or
actors were bad. We all work hard,
nobody wants to make a show which
shuts down in quick time.

Meena Kumari's Poems Now In

English

Meena Kumari's flirtations with

the pen are as seductive as her onscreen persona and now fans have
an opportunity to know about the
poet in her with a book containing a
compelling selection of her poems in
Urdu translated into English.
"Meera Kumari The Poet: A Life
Beyond Cinema", translated by
academician-writer Noorul Hasan and
published by Roli Books, has poems in
which the late actress talked about love,
loneliness, wishes, illusion, a window
of dreams, silence and innocence.
According to legendary composer
Naushad Ali, Kumari's poetry clearly
reflected her angst. "All her life she
was exploited by people for their own
ends, and was so frustrated that she
took to drinking and writing poetry to
fight her feeling of betrayal," he once
said.
Haunting, crystalline and precisely
observed, Kumari's poetry reveals a
side of her personality that was rarely
on display in her films. It proves
beyond any doubt that she was a much
more sensitive and self-aware woman
than her fans tend to realise.
Hasan says not many know that
Kumari had a way of her own with the
pen as well. "Soon after her death in
1972, Gulzar sahib arranged for Hind
Pocket Books to publish a collection
of her poems. I chanced upon this
slim paperback volume at the Howrah
Railway station the same year and
have had the pleasure of dipping into
that now more than moth-eaten prize
paperback for over three decades," he
says.
"What struck me most about the poems
was their amazing immediacy, their
power to take you in without any fuss
and bother. Plain as conversation,
Meena Kumari's poems strike an
uncanny intimacy or rapport with the
reader," he says.
Her imagination hovers over a wide
range of subjects from the very
personal and idiosyncratic to the more
objective though equally heartrending,
as expressed in poems like 'The Dumb
Child' or 'Empty Shop'. The sheer
audacity of her statements is the raison
d'etre of her poetry.
In her poem, "Aakhri Khwahish",
translated as "Last Wish", Kumari
wrote, "This night, this loneliness/ This
sound of heartbeats this eerie silence/
This silent rendering of ghazals/ By
sinking stars./ This solitude sleeping/
On the eyelashes of Time/ This last
tremor/ Of the feeling of love/ This
pervasive symphony of death -/ These
are inviting you!/ Come for a moment/
Decorate the dream of love/ In my

closing eyes."
In the introduction, historian-critic
Philip Bounds and researcher Daisy
Hasan writes, "Poetry was the medium
through which Kumari distanced
herself from her public image and
criticised the industry that had brought
her to public attention in the first place.
In that sense her poems tell us as
much about Bollywood as they do
about herself." "If the main goal of
her writings was to register the ebbs
and flows of her own inner life, many
of her poems also focused on those
aspects of commercial entertainment
which corrupt our understanding of
human personality.
"Irritated by the sense that the Indian
public saw her simply as a tragedy
queen, Kumari began to write poetry in
Urdu in an effort to evoke the subtler
elements of her sensitive and questing
sensibility. Indeed, she was the only
prominent actress of her time whose
gifts extended to literature as well as
film," they say. According to Hasan,
Kumari's unadorned, screaming verse
reminded him of snatches of Donne,
Firaq, Wordsworth and Ghalib.
"This is not to say that she is anywhere
near the dizzying heights scaled by that
august fraternity. Her poetry is slight,
casual, a kind of intermittent adventure
or a holiday she allowed herself from
her self-consuming stardom. "As a
poet, she resembles her screen persona,
coming across as a wayward, sensuous,
sacrificial lamb kind of woman. Her
imagery is soaked in the immemorial
customs and traditions of an ageless
India.
Her voice is very often the tremulous,
quavering voice of an invincible Indian
woman in the direst of straits," he says.
In trying to put these translated poems
together in a volume, Hasan hopes to
contribute to conveying another image
of Kumari which deserves as universal
an acknowledgement as her immortal
image as the queen of the Bollywood
firmament of yesteryears.

Kangana Ranaut: I Have Not

Increased My Remuneration After
Queen!

Kangana Ranaut may be one of the

most sought after stars in Bollywood
post the success of Queen but the
actor has denied reports that she is
demanding more money now.
The 27-year-old actress, who has only
one release Ungli this year, rather
wants to slow down a bit by doing one
film at a time.
There is nothing like that. I have not
increased my fee after Queen. Its just
not about the price. I am not taking up
projects like people expected me to
do. They thought I will sign some 10
films after it. Thats not I am doing and
people might be thinking that way,
she said.
Kangana will next start shooting Tanu

Weds Manu 2 with R Madhavan in

August.
I will start shooting in August. I am
teaming up with Madhavan again
and I am quite excited about it, said
Kangana, whose role of a no-nonsense
girl was appreciated in the original film
by Anand L Rai.
Kangana will begin shooting Reema
Kagtis project next year while Divine
Lovers, Indias first French production
starring her and Irrfan, will go on floors
by the year end.
I am doing one film at a time. I am not
clashing my dates. In February next
year, I am shooting Reemas project and
by the year end I will be shooting with
Irrfan for Divine Lovers, she added.

Dawn of The Planet of The Apes (PG) ****

Hail Caesar!
Smart scripts don't come out too often
in Hollywood. Leave it to 20th Century
Fox to shake things up considerably
with Dawn of The Planer of The Apes.
Superior to the stellar remake of the
original 1968 blockbuster that came
out a few years ago this new version is
taking people's breath away at Cineplex
odeon arena across B.C.
Ominous is the tone set right off the
bat as a brilliant opening tells us
that Earth is in a real bind. Thanks
to a deadly virus few humans are
left standing. Ground zero is San
Francisco. Hardship confronts the
remaining humans who are led by a
man called Dreyfus. Real life bad boy
Gary Oldman tries to stay afloat but
he's really no match for those unruly
forest dwelling neighbours who are
equally well organized.
Deep in the forest live the apes who are
led by the intelligent Caesar. Like the

humans there is a pecking order among

these animals and rivalries ensue. A
contest of wills emerge between the
two species that blossom into a battle
royal.
Thanks to a clever script that shows
both species have a whole range of
emotions Dawn of The Planet of the
Apes is insightful. You feel a real
connection with the gorillas with some
human contact memorable. Some
surprises will grip you as will the work
of Jason Clarke who stands tall as
Malcolm.
Director Matt Reeves brings forth
an epic tale that for 130 minutes is
gripping. Exciting, emotional and
entertaining throughout Dawn of The
Planet of The Apes is a well thought
out adventure worth seeing. Even the
3-D effects look good and work for a
change putting you front and centre in
the conflict.

New Cosby Show Could Debut

Next Year

BILL Cosby could have his new

comedy show with the NBC network
as soon as next year.
THE series, described as a "classic,
extended-family sitcom" with Cosby
as the patriarch, is currently in the
writing stage, NBC executives said.
The show was first announced in
January.
Cosby, 77, has a long history with
NBC, including his seminal The Cosby
Show, which became a smash hit 30
years ago and helped rescue a network

then at the bottom of the ratings.

After that, Cosby headlined a sitcom at
CBS, among other series.
If the new Cosby project isn't ready for
next year, it could be a contender for
spring 2015.
The upcoming Cosby venture will use
multi-cameras and be filmed in front of
a studio audience, a format that has lost
ground at NBC, where single-camera
comedies like 30 Rock, The Office and
Parks and Recreation have thrived.

Relationships

Some Things Hell Notice About

You In 10 Minutes

Just the kind of drink you choose or the amount of cleavage you show can
make a huge difference
1. Sunny smile: The way you smile
can say a lot about the person you are.
Make sure that if you are meeting a guy
for the first time you don't come across
as someone who's eager to please him
and therefore is laughing at all his jokes
a tad too enthusiastically. At the same
time don't appear too stern by keeping
a serious face.
2. Dress it up: What you wear is
obviously one of the first things that a
guy is likely to judge you on. Whether
you are a tom boy or a girly girl... all
is revealed by the way you dress and
most guys will decide whether to make
a move or back off just by looking at
the way you dress.
3. Your drink: The best way to figure
you out is by your drink. Your drink
can demystify you within no time.
Like if you are a woman between 2124 having rum and coke, you may be
thought to be someone who doesn't
have an adventurous life.
4. Can you talk? Don't try to fake
interests where you have none. So if
the guy is talking about football and
you have no clue about it, don't pretend
to be an avid fan. Just tell him outright
that this isn't your field of expertise.
5. Hair scare: Are Plain Janes
associated with a bun? The kind of
hairstyle you sport is definitely going
to leave an impression. An out of the
bed look is fine, but if your hair is
downright messy then it can be a major
turn off.

6. Watch your cleavage: Yes, if he

is a man he is bound to check out
your cleavage. So, be aware of what
you are projecting yourself to be. A
buttoned-up shirt is likely to give you
a conservative look, while showing
off too much may make you seem like
an easy girl. So know what you are
showing.
7. What's in your bag? If your bag
resembles a haversack it's not going
to be very appealing, you may not
be high maintenance, but if you keep
bringing out stuff it may give a guy an
impression that you are a hoarder or
high maintenance.
8. Glam it up or tone it down: You
don't need to look like an made up doll
if you are at a coffee shop, similarly
don't look like you have had no time
to even wash your face if you are at a
party. Neither is appealing, and a guy is
bound to notice.
9. Clean it up: We are talking about
your skin here. Guys don't notice
things like a blemish on your face. But
a fake tan or just an unwashed face can
be a turn off. It's okay to not put on
any make up, but ensure that you look
clean.
10. Hold yourself: The way you sit
or stand or move tell a lot about you.
Fidgeting too much in your seat is a
clear indication of your nervousness,
while sitting far too straight may make
you seem a bit stressed. Relax, be calm
and just be yourself.

Simple Exercises To Reduce Belly Fat

Flab around the belly! This is one
thing that can be source of constant
embarrassment no matter whats
your age. Nobody wants their tummy
protruding out and making their clothes
fit them weird. And its the hardest part
of the body to lose weight from! Here
are the answers on how to reduce belly.
But before we tell you how, let us tell
you why.
Why do you get belly fat?
There are a number of reasons for belly
fat in teenage girls:
Your genes may be responsible for
your tummy pouch.
Weak metabolism is yet another
reason. You must have noticed
that some of your friends eat a
lot of sugary foods, fried foods
or cold drinks and still manage to
keep a flat stomach. The reason
being these girls have a very good
metabolism. If your metabolism is
not good, you may have a bloated
stomach.
If the muscles around your
abdominal area are saggy, they
may lead to fat belly.
Learn to sit straight from your very
childhood. Sitting with a curved
back, may result in all the fat to
accumulate in your stomach area.
And now to tell how to reduce
stomach fat.
How to reduce tummy:
Dieting and exercise go hand in
hand. If you had thought that only
dieting will burn your belly fat, then
you are wrong. Working out can be
quite painful so many of you think of
giving it a skip. If you want to really
lose weight then you need to include
an hour of exercise for reducing belly
fat in your daily routine. Here are few
exercises to reduce tummy fat!
Seek the Best Exercise to Reduce
Belly Fat for Women
1. Crunches:
This is the first exercise that comes to
mind if your thinking how to reduce
belly fat!
Crunches take no.1 position when it
comes to fat burning exercises. You
have read in magazines and seen all
over television that crunches are just
magical when it comes to cutting down
belly fat. Its time you start doing this
ab crunching exercise.
i. Lie down flat on a mat with your
knees bent and feet on the ground.
Alternatively you can also lift your
legs off the floor at 90 degrees angle.
ii. Now lift your hands and place them
behind your head or keep them crossed
on your chest.
iii. Inhale deeply and as you lift your
upper torso off the floor, exhale.

iv. Again inhale as you get back down

and exhale as you come up.
v. Do this for 10 times as a beginner.
vi. Repeat another 2-3 sets.
One small tip is as you lift your torso; do
not just sit up straight. You should be at
30-40 degrees angle off the ground. Youll
feel pressure on your abdominal muscles.
2. Twist crunches:
Once you get used to the regular
crunches, modify the basic crunch to
get a even more effect tummy exercise!
i. Lie down on the floor with your
hands behind your head.
ii. Now bend your knees as you would
do in crunches keeping your feet on the
floor.
iii. As in a crunch you would have lifted
your upper torso; in side crunches you
just have to lift your right shoulder
towards left keeping your left torso on
the ground.
iv. Again alternatively, lift your left
shoulder towards right keeping your
right torso on the ground.
v. Repeat for another 10 times.
3. Side Crunch
Same as twist crunch, only that you
have to tilt your legs to the same side
simultaneously with your shoulders.
4. Reverse crunches:
Time to do reverse crunches.
Lie flat on the floor with your hands by
your side palms facing the ground.
ii. Lift your legs bent at knees and keep
them suspended in the air at 90 degrees
angle.
iii. Now lift your hips so as to bring
your legs close to your chest.
iv. You have to lift your hips applying
pressure on your abdomen.
v. Loosen your legs and again bring it
to your chest.
5. Vertical leg crunch:
Lie flat on the floor with your legs
extended upwards and one knee
crossed over the other.
Now that you have positioned your
body perfectly, do the same as you
would have done crunches.
Do 12-16 crunches up to 3 sets
together.
6. Bicycle exercise:
No, you dont need a bicycle for this.
Thinking how? Well tell you.
i. Lie on the floor and keep your hands
either by your side or behind your head
as in crunches.
ii. Now lift both your legs off the
ground bent at the knees.
iii. Bring your right knee close to your
chest keeping your left leg out.
iv. Now take your right leg out and
bring your left leg close to your chest.
v. Alternate bending your knees this
way as if you are paddling a bicycle.
7. Lunge Twist:

This is a beginner workout for starters

who want to reduce belly fat fast.
Stand with your legs hip width
apart. Keep knees slightly bent.
Lift both your hands in front of you
keeping them straight with your
shoulders.
Lunge forward as shown in the
picture. Take a big step forward
with your right leg and sit yourself
down as if on a chair so that your
knees are at 90 degrees angle from
the floor. The left leg should be
backwards supported by the toes.
The spine should be kept straight.
Dont bend your spine forward.
That is a very wrong way of
performing lunge.
First twist your torso to the right
and then to the left. Twist just the
torso, not your legs.
Continue repeating this for 16
times.
8. Rolling Plank:
Position yourself on the floor with
your knees and elbows.
Keep your neck aligned with your
spine. Look forward.
Lift the knees upwards and support
your legs on the toes.
Contract knees and keep breathing
normal. This is the plank pose.
Stay in this posture for 30 seconds.
Now start moving to and fro for the
next 30 seconds. This is the rolling
plank.
9. Side Plank:
Lie down on the floor sideways.
Support yourself on your right
elbow and right leg. Your elbow
should be perpendicular to the
shoulder and the left leg should be
above the right leg keeping them
together.
Keep your knees straight and your
hips shouldnt be touching the
ground.
Hold this position for 30 seconds.
Once you get comfortable, you

may hold this for 1-2 minutes.

Repeat with your other side too.
While in this position you may also lift
the leg placed on top and bring it back
again. This makes the exercise more
effective. Then it works not only for
your abs but also thighs and hips.
10. The Vacuum:
Come down on the ground to sit on
all fours, supporting yourself on
hands and knees.
Now inhaling deeply loosen your
abdomen.
As you exhale the breath, tighten
the abdomen muscles.
Hold the abdomen contraction for
15-30 seconds.
Repeat again.
11. Captains chair:
Sit on a chair with straight spine.
Keep both hands beside you with
palms by the side of your hips
facing downwards.
Inhale deeply.
Now as you exhale bring both your
legs upwards such that your knees
are close to your chest. Hold for 5
seconds. Dont bend forward and
arch your back.
Bring down your leg and repeat
again.
12. Bending side to side:
This is the best workout to slim down
your waist. Another perfect exercise
for reducing belly fat
Stand erect with your feet together.
Raise your hands above your head
in a namaste.
Now keeping your legs grounded,
bend your body to the right as
much as possible till you feel a
strain on your left waist. Stay for
15 seconds.
Return back to the original
position.
Now bend left. Retain this position
for another 15 seconds.
Slowly you may increase the
holding time to 30 seconds.

Write And Get Hired

Al Kamal, MBA
Arza Employment Serv Ltd
Want to get hired faster than up to 97%
of other job seekers?
Well, you can. By doing two simple
things almost nobody else is doing:
1.
Write down a job search goal
2.
Read it out loud 10 times a
day.
Do this and you'll find a job faster as a
result. I promise.
Here's how ...
Depending on which self-help book
you read or success guru you listen to,
only about 3% to 10% of the population
has written goals, with deadlines. To
prove this, ask yourself -- do you have
written goals? Probably not. Now go
ask 10 friends. Only about one will
answer yes, if they're honest.
The point is this: only a tiny percentage
of people take the effort to decide
exactly what they want in life and
then write it down in the form of clear,
specific goals.
This may explain why only a tiny
percentage of people rise to the top in
any profession. Why a tiny percentage
are truly happy in their work. Why a tiny
percentage sail from one rewarding job
to the next, as if they were following a
blueprint for success.
Well, that's what written goals are -mini-blueprints for success.
Think about it. Would you hire an
architect to build you a home who
refused to draw a blueprint? You'd
think he was nuts, of course, and show
him the door.
And yet, I'll wager that more than 90%
of people look for work with no written
goals -- blueprints -- of any kind. Is it
any wonder so many folks meet with
so much frustration and take so long to

get hired?
OK. Let's get you a job search goal
and then burn it into your brain, so you
will get focused, get motivated and get
hired. Fast.
There are two steps to this goal-setting
process.
Step 1: Decide on the job you want and
write it down
Complete the following statement and
write it on a 3x5 card:
"It's July 5. I'm an outstanding
JOB TITLE who adds value to the
company lucky enough to have me.
I'm making $XX,XXX in a stimulating
environment, doing work I love,
surrounded by co-workers I enjoy."
Now, why is this important?
Writing a goal forces you to get clear on
what you want. After all, you'd never
write down a goal like this: "Um, well,
I'd like a job that pays the bills, maybe
working in an office or something."
Yet, that's typical of the response I get
from many people when I ask, "What
job are you looking for?"
So, by writing down a specific
employment goal with a due date
(so your subconscious knows you're
serious), you'll be ahead of the vast
majority of other job seekers.
But that's not enough ...
Step 2: Reinforce your goal
Writing down a goal is great. But if you
want breakthrough results, you have
to reinforce it until it's crystal clear in
your mind's eye, like the North Star.
To do this, read your goal out loud 10
times every morning. Then, put your
3x5 "goal card" in your pocket and
refer to it during the day -- at least three
times, if you can.
Soon, your life will organize itself
around finding your ideal job, as your
subconscious goes to work. You'll start
to see employment leads where before
there appeared none.
Example: someone you haven't
heard from in 10 years will call, and
the conversation will lead to a job
interview. Or your hair dresser will
volunteer the name of a hiring manager
who's looking for someone like you.
Or your next-door neighbor will bring
back a hammer he borrowed last year
... along with a job lead.
I've seen this sort of thing happen too
many times to dismiss it as chance.
Try this two-step process for the next
30 days and see for yourself. The worst
that can happen is you'll have a very
clear idea of the job you seek. At best,
you'll be working.
What have you got to lose?

Why Be Proactive In Our

Treatment Of Employees?

Workplace bullying and harassment

are emerging issues to be addressed
by employers. Add the potentially
larger problem of increased stress,
decreased morale and diminished
productivity of those employees who
remain after layoffs, who are expected
to carry the same load with less people,
less experiential knowledge and less
resources. Factor in a still sluggish
economy and high unemployment, and
we have a workplace perfect storm
and a cresting wave of workplace
discontent.
I think employers need to be proactive
and act ahead of the law. Ignoring
this rising crisis may result in a layer
of liability and non-compliance
resulting from new laws. Their efforts
to run a business may be stymied by
a mobilized work force or they may
have to close down because they failed
to navigate this storm effectively. This
storm will stay in the workplace and
be also strengthened by the changes in
the workplace brought by information
technology and Generation Y. This is
not your fathers work environment
anymore.
Todays stories of bullying, harassment
and
excessive
demands
upon
employees are similar to the abuses
that led to sweeping changes in the 19th
century industrial and manufacturingbased workplace. Then the abuses were

physical in nature terrible working

conditions in factories, slaughterhouses
and manufacturing plants, coupled
with excessive hours and demands,
took their toll on the physical wellbeing of the American worker. The
rise of unions, protecting the rights and
the health of workers, and a wave of
worker protection laws followed.
Today, the damage is to the workers
mental state and stress levels. Todays
mistreatment
is
psychological
harassment verbal abuse, belittling,
threatening behavior, intimidation,
humiliation or setting employees up
for failure by making unreasonable
demands of them. Studies conducted
over the last few years show similar
results approximately 25-40% of
those surveyed experienced some kind
of workplace mistreatment or abuse.
Over 40% worked for an abusive
supervisor or employer.
To date few if any laws are responsive
to these conditions. While some efforts
have been made in the United States,
most of the anti-bullying laws that exist
are overseas, in the United Kingdom,
Germany, France, Sweden, Poland and
Belgium. U.S. employees are protected
from harassment only within the context
of discrimination, such as sexual
harassment (gender discrimination).
Absent some discrimination, there is
little if any statutory protection.

World Cup 2014: The Top Five Goals Of The Tournament As James
Rodriguez, Tim Cahill And Robin Van Persie Vie For The Crown
At a World Cup that produced goals in
abundance, we were treated to some of
the very best in recent memory.
Especially during the group stage, it
seemed every passing day produced
a genuine goal of the tournament
contender, leaving fans and experts to
argue long into the night as to which
was the most spectacular.
We have whittled a long list down to just
five, with the final rankings and omitted
goals sure to spark some debate.
In another year, any of these strikes
could have been classified as the best but here are Grandstand's top five goals
of the 2014 World Cup.
5: James Rodriguez v Japan
It was perhaps the moment where eyes
were truly widened to the class of
Colombia's James Rodriguez, and the
point where we all fell in love with the
correct pronunciation of his name.
James received the ball in space on
the left of Colombia's midfield, before
twisting and turning poor old Maya
Yoshida into a dizzy and helpless
bundle on the ground.
With keeper Kawashima onrushing,
James produced the most gorgeously
subtle chip with his left foot, before
running off to lap up the frenzied
applause of his adoring fans.

Displaying class and composure

beyond his years, James was not nearly
done amazing us in Brazil.
4: David Luiz v Colombia
In the annals of history, this fantastic
goal will sadly end up as somewhat of
a footnote.
A quarter-final free-kick that brought
back memories of Roberto Carlos in
his pomp, this blistering David Luiz
strike had the world eating out of the
palm of his hand - albeit for an all-too
fleeting moment.
The semi-final catastrophe against
Germany - of which Luiz has received
much of the blame - quickly saw
admiration turn to derision, and the
lasting memory of the curly-haired
defender at this tournament will not be
a flattering one.
But this is still a goal to remember.
Powerful, precise and influential, it
ignited the host nation like no other
moment in this World Cup, with a
crazed, roaring celebration from the
player to match.
3: Robin Van Persie v Spain
Now it gets tricky. When this went in,
and once everyone had comprehended
what they had seen, the unanimous
decision was that this could not possibly
be beaten for goal of the tournament.

With the Netherlands trailing 1-0 to

reigning champions Spain and halftime looming, the Dutch were looking
just a little shaky.
Daley Blind launched an optimistic ball
in Robin Van Persie's direction, and the
Manchester United man initiated his
launch sequence just in time for his
head to meet the ball at the precisely
perfect second.
NASA could not have planned it any
better if it tried.
It was a staggering moment, and
the sort of goal that may not ever be
repeated on a stage like this.
2: Tim Cahill v Netherlands
Where on earth did this come from?
How did Tim Cahill - a man who built
a terrific career on intelligence and
toughness - pull off a goal of technical
excellence beyond anything seen in a
Socceroos jersey?
It came mere seconds after Arjen
Robben gave the Dutch the lead, and
almost before television cameras had
been able to catch up with the play.
Ryan McGowan did what any clever
Socceroo should do - send a ball
towards Cahill's head in the box. But
he was not in a position to head it, and
controlling it under pressure would be
almost impossible.

So he hit it. And he absolutely belted it

with what is supposedly his weaker foot.
It was an unfathomable goal, a moment
that can surely only come around
once in a career, and only if you are
incredibly lucky. For a man who has
given so much to Australian football,
this was his most beautiful gift.
1: James Rodriguez v Uruguay
From prodigy, to star, to global icon in
one moment of unmatched technical
and creative genius. Only James
Rodriguez, in the moment of form he
was in, could have done it.
The only thing that matches the insane
technique involved in the goal is the
sheer audacity of it - James knew he
was going to embarrass the Uruguayan
goalkeeper before he had the ball, and
he knew exactly how he was going to
do it.
A deft cushion with the chest, a swivel
of the hips and unrelenting swing
through the back of the ball resulted in
a thunderbolt that had hit the crossbar
and nestled in the net before the keeper
had registered the shot.
It took something special to bump Van
Persie and Cahill down to bronze and silver
medals, but that is what this was - a goal we
will talk about for decades, and this World
Cup's most memorable moment.

Ba Coach, Manager Relieved Of

Their Duties
Ba coach Yogendra Dutt and manager
Arvin Singh have been relieved of
their duties. Confirming this to the
media, a top executive of Ba Football
Association said Dutt and Singh
were handed their letters on Monday
following the dismal performance of
the team in recent matches. The official
said the team in its history had never
lost three matches in a tournament and
the poor performance in Vodafone Fiji
FACT raised many questions.
He said their loss to Suva over the

weekend was also not acceptable and

they had to make a decision for the
betterment of the district. He also
added that intervention and action was
necessary as a rift was being created
between players and officials and this
contributed to the poor outcomes. Comanager David Ali has been appointed
the interim coach and manager of the
team and he is currently being assisted
by senior players in the squad. Ba faces
Nadi in the National Football League
at 7.30pm on Friday.
