Gabriel preaching in San Raymundo, Guatemala.
Gabriel S^ra, bom in Mexico on March 24,1956, received his
primary education in Mexico. He graduated from Colegio Biblico in
Eagle Pass, Tex^ in 1976. In November 1976 he married Vickie
Lynn Gibbs daughter of veteran missionaries, Harold and Irene
Gibbs.
Vickie, bora in Greencastle, Indiana on November 17, 1956,
received her education in the Eagle Pass, Texas public schools and
Southwest Texas State University. They have one son, Christopher
Alan, born August 4,1978 in Guatemala.
Gabriel has been serving in Guatemala since May 1976, joining
Harland Gary and Herb Watkins who were working with Inter
national Disaster Emei^ency Services, Inc. (IDES) in the recon
struction of San Raymundo, one of the mountain cities heaviest hit
by the earthquake of 1976. This program received special recognition
by the president of Guatemala as the most outstanding recon
struction of all the groups who went in to help after the disaster.
At the same time the physical reconstruction was taking place a
pr(^ram of spiritual buildii^ was also being carried out. After the
other IDES workers went back to their respective homes, Gabriel and
Vickie stayed on, not only to finish the material building program
but to continue the work of evangelism and teaching. As a result

there is a small but strong and growing congregation of "Christians
only" in San Raymundo. One unusual characteristic of this congre
gation is the number of men, many of them very capable in
leadership. The Church now also has land to build on, which was
given them in return for the help Gabriel gave the owner, building his
house.
Despite the name calling of many of their "friends" a great
number of children attend the services where they are given special
classes by Vickie. She has had ample experience with children as she
was a popular baby sitter at a very early age and started teaching
children in Sunday School and VBS when she was a freshman in High
School. She is also well liked by the women and they consider her a
"teacher" in many matters of the home.
As a result of his contacts with lawyers, engineers, and
government o^icials in IDES program of reconstruction, and more
recently with doctors because of Vickie's bout with hepatitis, Gabriel
is widely known and has gained respect and acceptance by all. They
were invited to the home of an engineer in Guatemala City to teach a
group of young married couples who wanted to leam more of the
Bible. This teaching has been started and this group is a prospective
nucleus for a congregation in Guatemala City.
The work with the congr^ation in San Raymundo,
holding 3 regular services and a home Bible study each week, the
couples Bible study in Guatemala City, and the construction of a
badly needed small home for them to live in occupies the most of
Gabriel's time now. He is also still helping the poorer people finish
construction of their homes, by obtaining, through IDES program,
building supplies at a much lower cost. Those of you who know
Latin America know this in itself is a time consuming, waiting in line
process, going from one office to another.
Wouldn't you like to be a part of this Guatemalan spiritual
reconstruction? How can you do this if you can't go? First of all
and most important, you can pray for the Seguras daily. Secondly,
you can send financial help. They have lived for almost two years on
$150$200 a month. Prices are about the same in Guatemala as they
are here, some are higher. For an example, one of their big expenses
is transportation; gasoline is $1.00 a gallon. They can use any help
you can give them.
Would you like for them to speak to you or your congregation
about their work when they are in the States again, possibly
November or December? You may correspond with them at:

The Gabriel Segura family are
helping to build a strong church in
Guatemala. This field was opened
following the earthquake on February
1976. A violent efia?th tremor lasting
thirty-nine seconds caused much
destruction. In San I^aymundo with
12,C0C population, there were only
two houses that stood after the
earthquake. The International
Disaster Emergency Services (IDES)
combined their efforts with Karlan
Gary and Kerb Watkins of Golegio
Biblico and others to help build
re-enforced concrete block homes for
fifty families^ in San Kaymundo.
Gabriel Segura Joined this effort
in May, 1976 after he was graduated
from Colegio Eiblico, Eagle Pass,
Tex. Gabriel has many talents and
