Correlation between Android's and Blackberry

Abstract

Abstract Purpose: The aim of the study is to identify, define, and evaluate the
correlating factors between Androids emergence and Blackberrys decline. The study
also aims to determine the extent of Androids effect on Blackberry and how Blackberry
adapted to the dynamic environment of mobile platforms.
Design/Methodology/Approach: The research approach will be divided into two
categories: The first part of the research will focus on secondary data, utilizing archived
literature online regarding Blackberrys decline and Androids emergence. The second
part of the research will extract primary data via online survey site, Survey Monkey. The
proponents will target college students to answer the survey through social networking
sites such as Facebook and Twitter. By combining the two parts of the research, the
proponents will have an educated insight in the correlation between Blackberry and
Android in terms of sales and market share.
Findings: This study determined the rise of Android Mobile as the cause of Blackberry
Mobiles decline in sales and market share. It also determined factors that impaired
Blackberrys success such as slow response to change and its lack of connection with
the mobile market.
Originality/value: The proponents resulting material from the conducted research will
serve as a solid framework for future proponents whose purpose is to determine the
vital importance of innovation and response to change. The research also serves as a
solid material for proponents that aims to conduct research on Android Mobile and
Blackberry Mobile.

Chapter I
INTRODUCTION

Blackberry: The king of early 2000
Blackberry, whose name was chosen due to the resemblance of the keyboards
buttons to that of the drupelets that compose the blackberry fruit, revolutionized the
whole mobile phone industry in the early 2000s. Started in 1999 as a two-way pager,
Blackberry continued to trudge on until it forged its popular convergent smart phone that
redefined connectivity.
Blackberry had a foothold on market share by focusing on email service and web
browsing. It also optimized its mobile device for thumbs-only typing or thumbing with
its type-friendly QWERTY keyboard. The Push-to-talk (PTT) feature, which is similar to
a two-way radio, and its innovative trackpad feature made Blackberry a household
name for mobile phones. In the US, the Blackberry was called Crackberry, referring to
the similarity of addictiveness of the mobile phone and crack cocaine. In 2006, Webster
named Crackberry as New Word of the Year.. Blackberrys strong popularity made its
way to the government facilities of USA, Canada, UK, and India as its standard phone.
US President Barrack Obama was known to be dependent on his Blackberry throughout
his 2008 Presidential campaign period(bbscnw, 2009).

Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
Early warning signs
Leveraging the momentum of success from multiple industries (iTunes and iPod
for Music, Disney Pixar for Entertainment, and Mac book for portable computers,),
Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone on 2007.
The iPhone proved to be an antithesis to Blackberry: iPhones focus was on consumers
while Blackberrys on business. Instead of Bulk orders from government outfit and
corporations, Apple offered iPhone in retail. While Blackberrys core competency is
functionality, iPhone decisively took on attractiveness, using sophisticated minimalism
as its design. The iPhone matched Blackberrys software stability with innovation,
especially the use of Multitouch function, which countered the QWERTY keyboard
function.
With the iPhone looming behind Blackberrys rule, Blackberry decided to create The
Storm, its first touchscreen phone in response to iPhone and pitched it off to the
emerging market of Latino countries and East Asian countries resulting to a market
share jump from 8% to 20% from 2007 up to the first quarter of 2010.
Despite the difference of function and strategy of the two mobile phones, it never gained
an edge over the other. Main reasons are the exclusivity of their software, iOS for
iPhone and BBOS for Blackberry, and its being in the high-end price range ($400 +).
The two mobile phone giants remained complacent until another player emerged that
completely swept aside Blackberry and outplayed iPhone.

7
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
The Titan
Google Android effectively exploited the glaring weakness of Apple iPhone and
Blackberry: Exclusivity.
Androids software is free under the Apache license, which allows mobile device
manufacturers to customize and distribute the software to their liking (ohs, 2000). This
led to developers preferring Android over other mobile OS such as iOS, which made
people resort to Jailbreaking, a term used to define the elevation of control for iPhone
users (McMillan, 2008). It resulted to a million apps published in Google play, Androids
App Store, and 50 billion downloads (Victor, 2013). A mid-2013 survey showed that
71% of mobile device developers preferred Android.
Due to Androids open move, a number of low-end and mid-end mobile device
manufacturers, especially in East Asia, sprouted using Android OS.
In the Philippines, the Android OS made it possible for Class D and Class C market to
purchase an Android phone. These companies, Star Mobile, Cherry Mobile, MyPhone,
Torque, O++, Cloudfone, and SKK, made it possible by offering smartphones around
PHP 2,000, with SKK topping it at PHP 1,699 with its SKK Mobile A11 (SKK, 2013).
Android has answered both iPhones and Blackberrys core advantage.
With iPhone, Android has the same Multitouch feature and utilized the same User
Interface as of iPhone, retaining the attractiveness and innovation once enjoyed by
iPhone at a lesser price. A notable example is Samsung, the leader of high-end Android
8
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
devices, matching Apples iPhone 4 series with Samsung Galaxy S series (Lunden,
2013).
With Blackberry, the email advantage was easily replaced by the built-in Google Mail
app by Android. The Push-to-talk feature and BBM pin was matched with Skype Mobile
Apps, WeChat, Line, Kakao Talk and other apps easily downloaded from Google Play
Store for free, leaving Blackberry mobile reduced to a text-and-call phone.
The Android phone surge caught everyone by surprise. In the third quarter of 2012,
Google announced that there were currently 500 million Android OS activation followed
by a 75% sales share in the 1
st
quarter of 2013 (Tofel, 2012).
In a complete manner, Android emerged as the victor of the whole Smartphone Battle
Royale.

The Blackberry Fiasco
In a bid to remain relevant in the Smartphone wars, Blackberry released the
Blackberry Z10 and Q10, smartphones with the blackberry taste aimed at the average
consumer market. However the release was two years late due to a last-minute OS
patch fix. This led to dismal sales for the Blackberry Smartphones, add it to the fact that
the smartphones are have limited inventory in stores and reviews arent topnotch
(Smith, 2012).
In the first quarter of 2012, Blackberry had 2% sales that dipped to 0.5% in the same
quarter of 2013. This forced Blackberry to drop 4,500 of its workers, signaling a prompt
9
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
exit for Blackberrys top level executives to leave for other Smartphone companies.
Blackberry decided to sell itself, albeit open to joint-ventures (Rodriguez, 2014).
Two days after the announcement, Fairfax offered to buy Blackberry at $9 per share.
The sale didnt close and fired Blackberry CEO, Thorsten Heins, replaced by CEO
interim John Chen as a result (Martell & Sharp, 2014).
John Chen was known for turning around company. He was notably known for
overseeing the restructuring of Sybase, a software company, and turning it around for
profit. Blackberry relies on John Chens expertise and experience to save Blackberry
(Kastrenakes, 2013).
A lot of things were pointed out in the cause of Blackberrys downfall. Some noted weak
leadership, lack of direct consumer relationship, and slow innovation among other
things. In response, John Chen issued an open statement saying, We (Blackberry) are
committed to reclaiming our success.(Zeis, 2013).

Market Situation
Mobile phone maker Blackberrys second quarter earnings came as a pretty big
disappointment. The company lost nearly one-billion dollars and a 45% drop in revenue.
Blackberrys latest figures surprised no-one - but still make for difficult reading. The
company warned investors a week in advance, that losses for June-through-August
could hit one billion dollars. 965-million (USD) is slightly under that mark - but no less
troubling. Blackberrys own numbers lay bare how far behind the competition they now
10
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
lag. In 3 months, Blackberry sold 3.7m phones around the world. Apple sold 9 million
new iPhones in just 3 days. Worse still, Blackberry admits most of its sales are for older
models, like the Curve and the Bold, not the supposed "game-changer" Blackberry 10
series. BlackBerrys fate should serve as a stark reminder of how truly agile strategies
should be to survive in todays unforgiving business climate. The latest developments
reveal a desperate situation at the heart of the Canadian firm, which has had to release
Thorsten Heins, its chief executive of less than two years, in an agreement with
investors after takeover talks with Fairfax Financial Holdings were scattered. In the new
deal on the table BlackBerry has received investment of $1 billion (R10bn) from Fairfax
and other institutional investors through private placement of convertible debentures.
(Peter Delonno, 2013) BlackBerrys comeback momentum seemingly stalled, many
analysts have started coming up with ideas for how the company can survive if its
current plan to take on iOS and Android with BlackBerry 10 falls apart. Barrons points
us to a new research note from Nomura Equity Research analyst Stuart Jeffrey, who
says that the company may have painted itself into an unprofitable corner because its
longtime business model simply doesnt give it the flexibility to remake itself. In
particular, he says that BlackBerrys current market share will never be enough to
attract enough app developers. It has announced that the deal in the works to go private
failed to go through and it will remain as it is. Instead, the company has sought $1 billion
in convertible debt financing and its current CEO, Thorsten Heins, is stepping down and
former Sybase CEO John Chen will take the reigns for the interim. The changes are an
obvious move towards another fresh start one that Ive predicted before, with
BlackBerry going away from their current paradigm and into a more software-oriented
11
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
business model. BlackBerry shares fell to just $6.31 on the news, but have since
stabilized. The original deal BlackBerry was attempting was for its major investor,
FairFax, to raise money to increase its $1B share to about $5B enough to own the
company outright, thus taking it private. (Kristian Yeo, 2013)
To do that, FairFax would have had to raise about $4.7B, which it couldnt do. Most
potential investors seemed only interested in slices of the pie rather than the whole
thing and much of the $5-$6 billion valuation for BlackBerry is based on things not
everyone agrees with, with some valuing the company as low as $1B or less. Now, the
dropping of Heins and the bringing in of Chen as CEO, even if temporary, heralds the
obvious: Chens background is in business technology and software, which BlackBerry
is likely headed into now, dropping its former gadget-and-software combination model.
With BlackBerry 10 being largely a flop, its apparent that few are interested in the
companys hardware. (Brad Reed, 2013) This new round of funding will keep the
company afloat for maybe a year and details of how it will be raised, whos fronting the
money, and what the terms are have not been released. Convertible debt financing is
often used by startups and companies transitioning and is generally considered short-
term (less than a year), with the resulting investment usually ending with the investor
receiving stock in the company equivalent to the investment plus an agreed-upon
interest value. Most likely the loan would be based upon expected revenues from the
BlackBerry Z30, which hits the Verizon network this month. If sales are better than
tepid, it may be the revenue the company needs to make the switch to offering software
only (BB 10 as an operating system only). The bottom line is that BlackBerry is failing to
gain confidence from the business sector it depends upon to make its sales. Meanwhile,
12
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
rivals are continuing forward and taking potential clients away. If the Canadian company
wants to stay on the field, it will need to bring a brand new game. (James Burchill,
2013).

Statement of the problem:
How did Blackberry lose the market to Android-based smartphones?
Why did Blackberry lose the market sales and why did they get left behind in
terms of modern technology.

Research Objectives:
To determine how did Blackberry lose its market when Android mobile
technology enters the market.
To know the reason of Blackberry's market decline, failing to cope up with the
new technology.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework
Blackberry launch their newest operating system on January 2013 and unveiling
the z10 and q10 smartphones. It had 70,000 available apps at launch, The stock price
rose in anticipation of sales of the new devices, the company continued to cut costs and
if worse came to worse, its patents, services and security business could be attractive to
13

a prospective buyer. But the products wasn't selling well and the stock price towards the
summer of 2013 took a sharp downturn.

Conceptual Framework

After the market downfall of Blackberry, problems are starting to hit. The Blackberry
wasnt selling that much anymore because of the poor review of the units. That makes
their phones harder to find in stores now. Rumors said that some of the Blackberry
mobile phones are harder to find or phase out due to the low demand and less
favorable for the customers. Rationale behavior of the customers has been change from
purchasing power to the demand to the cost of the units. The Blackberry has no match
with the ios mobile operating system and other new releases of Android phones. The
findings of this study presume that the large market of Android phones shows how they
are vast and innovative in terms of high technologies, capable of giving much
awareness and information for the customers who are likely to use trending and a must
have gadgets. Androids market share started exploding in the mobile landscape. Even
as Android has ballooned to an 80% share of the global smart phone market, Apples
market share has remained remarkably consistent and has stayed in the 15% to 20%
range for the past four years (Reed, 2013).

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research Locale
The study was conducted at De La Salle University Dasmarias, This place was
selected for knowing the efficiency of the said study among Androids emergence
against blackberrys decline. The respondents were students, adults and young
professionals. This study has tested to evaluate the factors which make the Blackberrys
lost and fall off in terms of the androids intensive technologies. Researchers had also
identified the effectiveness of which phone is best used in terms of apps, games,
videos, WiFi and camera through sending an online based survey questionnaire to their
various social networking sites.

Research design
The research design would be exploratory method which would be undertaken to gain
background information. For the first part we will focus on secondary data analysis. We
will aim to collect information which causes the Androids emergence over the
blackberry. Utilizing archived literature online, the second part of the research will be
extracting primary data via online survey site, Survey Monkey. The college students will
be the target respondents which will be answered through social networking sites. The
said approach is used as much as the principal rationale of the study was to figure out
the situations that makes blackberrys affection and lost to Android sudden emergence.
16
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
Students from different year and college and other young professionals were asked to
fill up an online survey questionnaire, survey monkey. In order to determine the factors
on what causes the blackberrys lost to its users and why it has been less favorable to
use.
Population and Sampling design
The sampling method used in this research is non probability sampling where some
elements of population have no chance of selection. It involves the selection of
elements based on assumptions regarding the population of interest, which forms the
criteria for selection. The quota sampling technique was used in this research study.
Which there were specified items which will be our basis for the collection of data. We
need to know the proportion of the people who are fun of using blackberry, iPhone and
Samsung android. By gathering efficient and legitimate information based on how many
respondents are favored with the same idea.

Statistical treatment of data
The following statistics were used for data analysis.
Using the Weighted Mean formula below. The weight mean for all indicators in the
factors that affect the number of respondents who had experience of using different
mobile phones and answered Blackberry survey questionnaire were acquired using the
Likert Scale.
17
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
Formula: X= x/N
Where:
x = 468 sum of all data
N = 52 number of respondents

Data gathering procedure
The data for this research were collected using a survey questionnaire. The survey was
created using suitable questions modified from related research and individual
questions formed by the researcher. The survey was comprised of 5 questions, which
were related to the participants perception regarding Androids emergence and
Blackberrys decline. In this questionnaire, Protocol Analysis was used to determine a
person in a decision making situation and to ask him or her to be able to share
experiences with various mobile systems that is being used. It also determines whether
and which is the most favorable phone that is being used for entertainment, business
and community nowadays. Fifty respondents both students and young professionals
were asked to rate the problems and situations indicated under each factors in the
questionnaire. This is to determine which mobile phones are more likely and favorable
to use. All appropriately fulfilled questionnaires were retrieved, prepared, organized and
compiled for analysis and gathering of data.

METHODOLOGY

The data collecting used in the study were the following:
1) Survey questionnaire form This instrument is where the indicators are found
and are listed under each factor. Indicators are the problems and situations
mostly encountered by students. Indicators were categorized to determined the
factor that mostly affects the users experience about different mobile systems
which is the most favorable to use for the respondents in terms of their features
and on how they usually use their phones individually. Indicators were
categorized and listed to determine the factor that has the greatest impact among
the respondents.

Types of Questionnaire that has been used:
a) Open format questions or open-ended questions giving the audience an
opportunity to express their opinions in a free-flowing manner. These
questions don't have predetermined set of responses and the respondent is
free to answer whatever he/she feels right. By including open format
questions in the questionnaire, it can get true, insightful and even unexpected
suggestions. Qualitative questions fall under this category.
b) Close format questions this multiple choice question are asked to the
respondents to choose among any of the given multiple choice answers.
19
Correlation between Android's and Blackberry
There is no fixed limit as to how many multiple choices should be given; the
number can be even or odd. It is being asked to determine and to track their
opinion about the comparison of mobile systems and its features to collect the
most accurate answers and ideas.
c) Likert questions identifies and ascertain how strongly the respondents
agrees to a particular statement. Such type of questions this helps the
researcher to assess how the user reacts with their individual experience with
the feeling towards a certain issue, product or service. Comparing and
assessing the different uses and features that is available on mobile phones
most particularly in Blackberry, iphone and Samsung Android.
d) Ranking questions the respondents are asked to rank a particular issue on a
scale that ranges between very satisfactory down to unsatisfactory. Ranking
questions allows you to choose the most convenient choice you are
comfortable with. By telling their experience about the various features of
mobile phones. Respondents reacts base on what is the most suitable and
convenient for them. Researchers responds by collecting the ideas and
opinions on how many data that have been gathered from the given
respondents through this ranking type of question.

are a bit big. Blackberry: too sophisticated. classy. conclusion, not for a non- business
person like me. Samsung: classy in a way but affordable. :) it is everyone's ideal phone.

Samsung Android has no limitation in downloading applications compared to iPhone.
I've been a Blackberry user but I prefer more of android smartphones. One thing I don't
like with androids is its battery. It easily get drained.
