The Thomason College was given the status of University of Roorkee in 1949.
The University of Roorkee was declared by the Government of India as the seventh Indian

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is a leading institution of higher technical
education with an excellent track record of its performance over the last 165 years. IIT Roorkee
(erstwhile University of Roorkee) has immensely contributed in the growth and development of
our nation in particular and world at large. It is difficult to find any important project of nation
building or any industry where there is no significant contribution of the graduates of this
institute. The faculty and students always strive hard to maintain its position of leadership in
engineering and technology.
IIT Roorkee always gets the best available input of the students in the country and they work
with the motto "Shramam Vina Na Kimapi Sadhyam" i.e. "Nothing can be achieved without
genuine effort". The core values of the Institute help them to develop their overall personality
and make engineer/technocrat/manager/scientist of par excellence to complete and work at
global level. The graduates marching through the portal of IIT Roorkee are young, energetic
and dynamic and are capable of thinking unconventionally and come out with best possible
solutions even in the most difficult situations.

The Institute has a glorious past of more than


165 years old. Started as Thomson College of
Engineering in 1847. It was named as University
of Roorkee in 1949 and then was then given the
esteemed IIT status on September 21st,2001.
The institute spares no efforts to groom the
students, not only in their chosen discipline, but
also broaden their mindsets and create positive
attitudes . This equips them with all qualities to
make them an asset to whichever
institute/organization they may join.
Undergraduate students undergo an six to
eight-week training/internship in reputed
organizations, both in India or abroad. The MCA
students undergo a training of 6 months during
their last semester of the course.

Academic Structure of Programmes


Institute Core
The institute core courses are common to all B.Tech/B.Arch./IDD programs and are
planned to give the students a firm base. These include courses on Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry, Engineering sciences, Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, Biotechnology and
Management.

Departmental Core
The departmental core consists of courses considered essential for a chosen discipline,
including laboratory courses, practical training and a major project.

Departmental Electives
The departmental electives are related to the chosen discipline but are designed to offer
deeper insight in specialized courses.

Institute Electives
The institute electives are the courses offered by different academic Departments/ Centers
to the students of other disciplines. The students are free to select a number of courses
from a basket of courses offered, depending upon their interests and their course
structure.

Co-Curricular Activities
Educational tour, group discussion, development of technical communication skills and
practical training form an essential part of the curricula structure.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Students are also encouraged to participate in a variety of extra-curricular and sports
activities with a view to develop to their overall personality and groom a student to be an
engineer-manager.

Proficiencies
Proficiencies are courses integrated in the academic curriculum with the intent to
encourage and hone the co-curricular skills of the students. In each semester students
have the opportunity to select from a plethora of options like debating, sports, stargazing,
choreography and many more.

Summer Internship

Life at IITR

All the programmes (Undergraduate and IDD) mandate an industrial internship


complementing the institute's academic curriculum with practical industry experience. The
idea is to expose the students to that domain of work which enables them to appreciate
the deviations from theory at the ground level. This not only ensures the students a
promising on-the-job training experience but also ensures an exposure indispensable to
gain a wider and a richer perspective of their discipline.

Students Festivals

Cognizance: The Technical Festival


Though younger than most of its counterparts, Cognizance has improved in leaps
and bounds to become one of the biggest technical events of the country. The last edition
attracted participants from 450 institutes from across the country, thus making it the
second largest technical fest in Asia. Aimed at providing a platform for showcasing the best
and the latest innovations in the world of technology, the event also boasts of a plethora of
lectures and workshops by some of the biggest names in the field. The total number of
papers presented across 16 disciplines is more than any other campus in the continent.
Entirely managed by students, Cognizance provides opportunities for the aspiring scientists
and managers alike. Cognizance is currently under the process of getting an ISO
9001:2008 Quality Management Certification.

Student Festivals and Sports Activities

Thomso: The Cultural Festival


The annual cultural fest of IIT Roorkee has steadily grown into one of the largest
youth festivals of the region. Its current status as the 'Official Youth Festival of
Uttarakhand', bestowed on it by the Government of Uttarakhand, only ratifies the same.
Every October, Thomso provides a platform for students from across the country to
showcase their talent and vie for glory in a plethora of competitions. Additionally, the event
is graced by some of the biggest names in the world of entertainment. With over 4 months
going into its organization, Thomso provides the students of IITR an opportunity to interact
with celebrities and corporate persons and thereby hone their creative and managerial
skills. Tarang is another fest that IIT Roorkee boasts of, which is the annual cultural
festival of IIT Roorkee's Saharanpur Campus.
Srishti: The Hobbies Club Festival
Srishti, is the annual Hobbies Club Exhibition of IIT Roorkee, the only one of its kind
in IITs. This fest gives an opportunity for young talent to display their creativity and
innovation on a bigger platform establishing it as the annual culmination of a major portion
of the institute's research work. Every year, Srishti conducts a variety of events in its eight
sections as well as some informal fun filled events. Some real social problems are also
introduced for the participants to solve- thus, giving their creativity and talent a direction
towards the benefit of the whole society.

SPORTS: A PASSION

Physical recreation through games


and sports has been an integral part of the
Institute since its inception.The Lion
Trophy, the most prestigious and coveted
prize in sports was instituted in 1912. The
Institute is equipped with exemplary
facilities in a number of sports and awards
proficiencies in 14 games. The legacy
continues, as students of the institute take
advantage of the marvelous sports facilities
to excel in sports and games. In order to
motivate the students and to sustain their
interest in sports, a special scheme of NSO
(National Sports Organisation) has been
started from the session 2007-08.
The Inter-IIT Sports Meet held
annually every winter among the seven IITs
is hosted by any one of the IITs in turn.For
the year 2012-2013 it is being held at IIT
Roorkee.An Inter-IIT Aquatics Meet held
separately as part of the main Meet each
year precedes the main Inter-IIT Sports
Meet. The 41st Inter IIT Sports meet was
hosted by IIT Roorkee in December 2005. IIT
Roorkee won the General Championship
Trophy for Women. Regarded as the
Olympics of IITs, this sporting
extravaganza for every sportsperson in the
IITs sets the pace and is the ultimate
platform to showcase one's sporting
prowess.
Sangram, The open Sports Fest was
organized for the first time in our campus
last year with a huge response from colleges
across North India and has now become a
regular feature

The Joint Admission to M.Sc. (JAM) test is


yet another highly competitive All India
Entrance Examination held in 8 different
disciplines for admission into the Master

IITs. On an average, only 4% of the
aspirants are offered a seat in one of
these programmes. The JAM test has
become a benchmark for normalizing
the undergraduate level science
education in the country.

Programme Information

B. Tech. / B. Arch.
The Bachelor of Technology/ Architecture programme is offered in nine core displines. It is
aimed at providing a basic foothold in various aspects of engineering. The salient feature of
this programme is the final year Project which exposes students to innovative technology
and latest industrial practices
.
Dual Degree (Integrated B. Tech + M. Tech)
The five year Dual Degree programme offers on completion a B.Tech degree in a basic
engineering discipline and an M.Tech degree in the field of specialization. A fourteen
months long Dual Degree Project forms an integral part of the programme, in which
students tackle live industrial problems and do cutting edge research.
Integrated Master of Technology
Five year Integrated M. Tech. Programme in Polymer Science & Technology, Geophysical
Technology and Geological Technology has been started from the academic session 200708. Admissions were offered through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and students will
be awarded Integrated M.Tech. Degree in specified fields after completion of 5 years.

Placement Informations

M.Tech.
The Master of Technology programme admits graduate students in core as well as
interdisciplinary courses (IDPs), the duration of which is two years for a full time programme
and three years for a part time programme. Most M.Tech students undertake teaching or
research assistantship along with regular course work. The programme comprises of one or
two years of course work to train students in high theoretical knowledge and a 15 months
long M.Tech project.
M.Sc./ M.C.A
The two year Master of Science programme admits the science graduates of the country.
Along with regular course work which helps to develop a strong theoretical base and an
expertise in research, students take up the yearlong project which exposes them to various
problems encountered in the industry.
Ph.D.
The Ph.D programme offered by the institute consists primarily of an original doctoral
thesis. Interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research is actively encouraged by the institute, sponsored and development projects from industrial organizations are also
undertaken. All PhD students are required to publish their thesis results in international
journals. The average duration of the programme is about 4 years.

1) Organizing a Pre-Placement Talk for
the Companies/Organizations, to impart
information about themselves and all
aspects of the job role offered, in a Senate
Hall making the environment perfect for a
well rounded discussion of the future
prospects.
2) Providing accommodation in the
N.C.Nigam Guest House and the Khosla
International House both of which boasts
of truly world class facilities with
conference rooms, a Dining hall, Ac Rooms
and a scenic view of the campus. Vehicles
are also provided for local commutation if
required.
3) Making arrangements for Personal
Interview and Group Discussion in sound
proof rooms.
4) Student Coordinators to help manage
on-campus proceedings.
5) Facility of Video Conferencing and
Telephonic interviews to conduct the
recruitment process is also available on
request.

Placement Informations

PHASE-I
The invitation, containing the relevant information and the job annexure, is sent

to the companies/organizations through email/post.


Companies/organization fills the annexure and sends it back to the Training and
Placement Office, IIT Roorkee via email/post. It is highly desirable that the job
annexure is completed in all respects as it forms the primary basis of
communicating the job-profile being offered to the candidates.
The details of the annexure are made available to the students on Placement
Online, IIT Roorkee
Suitable dates for Pre-Placement Talk (PPT from here on) are decided after
discussions between the company and the Training and Placement Office.
After confirmation from the company, students are notified for the PPT date.
The company visits IITR campus and conducts its PPT.
The company may also, if interested, conduct selections for summer internships
of the pre final year students on the same day as it's a general procedure followed
by companies.
PHASE-II
The Training and Placement Office allots a date to the company as per the
ranking by the students. The company is ranked on the basis of following
parameters:
Job profile and growth prospects.
The package being offered by the company.
Past record of recruitment at IIT Roorkee.
Feedback from the students regarding the company.
The company can confirm or negotiate the dates with the Placement Office.
Interested students sign their willingness by registering for the company online.
Resumes of the interested students (if required) are made available to the
companies for the purpose of short listing.
The list of short listed students is mailed to the Training and Placement Office
prior to the campus selection date.
PHASE-III
Companies visit the campus on the given date and conduct the written
technical/aptitude test, group discussion/personal interview as a part of their
selection procedure.
Please note that the facility of video conferencing at the campus can be availed
for the purpose of interviewing candidates in case the company is unable to visit the
campus.
The company/organization is required to furnish the final list of selected
students as soon as possible after the final completion of procedure. The selected
students may or may not be allowed to sit in further job interviews as per the
placement policy of the institute.
