1 Introduction
1.1 Product Description
The FOSC-500-AA is a cold applied re-enterable splice closure for small fiber optic cables. It provides a
mechanical and environmental protection for fiber optic splices and permits easy access by the customer. The
closure is applicable underground, direct buried and aerial. The closure can handle maximum 24 splices and can
be used in-line and in butt configuration. The closure has 4 cable entry ports (two on each side). The cable
sealing is secured by gel-end pieces under compression on both of the closure ends.
2 General
2.1 Tools
Screwdriver - (pozidriv)
- flat (5,5 mm)
Marker pen
Fiber guiding pin
FAC-TUBE-CUTTER-01 to cut transportation tubes (in slotted core cable installation only)
FACC- TUBE STRIPPER-02 to strip the loose tubes

Depending on the network layout and the construction of the cables,
the kit content may be different.
Some of the components will be pre-assembled in the closure
depending on the selection and the ordering.
The minimum content will be:
The joint body & cover with
Pre installed - 1 splicing tray.
- 1 splicing tray cover
- 2 splicing steps
- 2 splice holder
- 2 longitudinal rubber seals
- 2 external cable strain relieves
- 1 re-entry label
2 Cable attachment brackets.(different type depending on the
cable type)
2 Stainless steel cable clamps.
2 Cable plugs
1 Silica gel bag.
1 Cleaning tissue
1 Installation instruction
Optional a shield continuity or grounding wire and clip.
2.2 Kit contents
3.1.1 Prepare the cable according to the drawing, remove the outer
cable jacket over a length of 1000 mm and cut the strength member at
25 mm length.
3 Cable preparation
3.1 Loose tube cable preparation
3.1.2 Remove the loose tubes up to 35-40 mm from the cable cut.
A maximum of 4 loose tubes can be terminated.
3
3.2 Central core cable preparation
3.2.1 Prepare the cable according to the drawing. Strip the cable
over a length of 1000 mm and remove the central core up to
35-40 mm from the cable cut.
3.3 Slotted core cable preparation
3.3.1 Remove the outer cable jacket over a length of 1000 mm and
cut the core at 40 mm length.
3.3.2 Cut the protection tube under an angle to length ( start with 60
mm ). Slide the protection tube over the fibers of each slot and finally
push the tube into the slot of the cable. Make sure you have 50 mm
of tube, measured from the cable jacket so that the tube is on the tray
for 5 to 10 mm..
3.3.3 Protect the transition from the cable to the tubes with a few
layers of Teflon tape.
3.3.4 Consider the protection tubes now as loose tubes in the
installation.
4 Cable installation
4.1 All the fibers should be cleaned and free from cable grease or
dirt.
4.2 Remove the protection foil from the gel sealing blocks of the
closure.
4
4.4 Remove the cover of the splicing cassette.
4.5 Loose tube cable
4.5.1 Hold the cable in the correct position and slide the strength
member in the base part of the cable attachment bracket. The cable
tubes should protrude underneath of the cable attachment bracket.
Note: the tubes should be oriented in such a way that they are at the
bottom of the cable.
4.5.2 Secure the cable attachment bracket with a metal cable clamp
to the cable.
4.3 Turn the top part of the outer strain relief clamps 90 degrees to
facilitate the cable fixing on the cable termination point.
4.5.3 Place the metal strength member holding plate over the
strength member and insert the two screws through the holes of the
holding plate and the cable attachment bracket. Screw the cable
attachment bracket in the closure body on the cable termination point.
4.6.1 Hold the cable in the correct position and secure the cable
attachment bracket with a metal cable clamp to the cable. Position the
strength members between the plates.
4.6.2 Position the cable attachment bracket with the central tube
downwards at the cable termination point.
Insert the two screws through the holes of the holding plate and the
cable attachment bracket and screw the attachment bracket in the
closure body on the cable termination point.
4.6 Central core cable
5
4.7.1 Place the bottom part of the cable attachment bracket on top
of the termination point and position the core of the slotted core cable
along the uprising part of the cable attachment bracket.
4.7 Slotted core cable
4.7.2 Put the top part of the cable attachment bracket over the cable
core with the open end facing down and insert the two screws in the
cable attachment bracket into the cable termination point of the
closure.
4.7.3 Turn the top of the outer strain relief bracket back in position
and tighten it with the preinstalled screw.
5.1 Take the splice protector and put it centred in the splice holder.
Different types of splice holders can be fitted in the tray with the use of
an adapted splice holder.
5 Fiber organisation
5.2 Fibers placed in the splice holders on the opposite side of the
cables can be routed once through the middle and cross to the other
side to keep the incoming and the outgoing side of the splice
protectors in the same direction.
5.3 Install the splicing tray cover.
6.1.1 Prepare the cable as shown. Shielding: 20 x 10 mm.
6.1.2 Make a connection between the shielding and the grounding
bolt and/or the other cable(s).
6.2 Central core cable
6.2.1 Install the cable as shown. Shielding: 20 x 10 mm.
6
6 Shield continuity or grounding
6.1 Loose tube cable
6.2.2 Other option of grounding/shielding: clamp the corrugated
steel and the metal strength members.
6.2.3 Prepare the cable as shown.
7
6.2.4 For the cables on the opposite side of the ground feed through
connect the metal bracket with the grounding bolt. The cables on the
side of the grounding bolt are always in contact with the grounding
when installed.
6.3.1 Prepare the cable as shown. Shielding: 20 x 10 mm.
6.3 Slotted core cable
6.3.2 Make a connection between the shielding and the grounding
bolt and/or the other cable(s). Grounding must be done in the side
area.
Warning: Verify that the grounding will not pinch or contact the
tubing after closing the closure.
7.1 Remove the silicagel out of his packaging and place the inner
bag in the middle of the closure. This bag should be replaced by a new
package after each re-entry.
7 Closing the closure
6.4 Grounding
6.4.1 Secure the grounding wire from the opposite side to the
grounding bolt.
6.4.2 Connect the outer grounding wire onto the outer grounding
feed through of the closure.
7.2 Insert the plugs in the unused cable ports.
7.3 Write down the installation date on the re-entry label in the
cover of the closure.
7.4 Close the cover by closing the latches starting with the middle
latch of the closure.
7.5 Rotate the knob 2-3 times clockwise without pushing on it.
Position the two marking holes of the knob and the closure cover in line
before pushing the locking knob down.
8.1 Push the locking lip and turn the knob till all the tension is
released from the knob.
8 Re-opening
8.2 Using a screwdriver release all the latches, start in the middle
and work out to the end of the closure.
9 Important steps during installations
Clean the fibers
Make sure not to loose ID
No tube should protrude in the splicing cassette
Insert the plugs in the unused cable ports.
Start closing the latches from the middle
Position the two marking holes of the knob and the closure cover
well before pushing the knob down
Do not forget to mark the re-entry label
Replace the silicagel after each re-entry.
7.6 Push the knob down and turn the knob clockwise until the locking
lip is behind the stop.
