Experiment 2
Topic : Volumetric analysis edox
Purpose : To determine the ratio o! the number o! moles o!
hydroxyammonium ions to the number o! moles o! iron"###$
ions participatin% in the reaction&
Materials : KA 1 is a solution containin% '&() % o! potassium man%anate"V##$
per (00 cm
*
&
KA 2 is a solution prepared by boilin% +&00 % o!
hydroxyammonium sulphate, ",-*.-$2S.+ per dm
*
with
excess iron"###$ ammonium sulphate and dilute sulphuric acid&
KA 3 is '&0 mol dm
-*
sulphuric acid&
Apparatus : /ea0er
1unnel
etort stand and clamp
2hite tile
2(0 cm3 conical !las0
2( cm3 pipette
4ipette !iller
/urette
.ne wash bottle with distilled water
Theory :
#n the presence o! hydro%en ions, the hydroxyammonium ion, ,-*.-
5
will
reduce iron"###$ ion to iron"##$ ion while the ,-*.-
5
ion itsel! will be oxidised to
dinitro%en oxide&
Proceure :
a$
'& 4araphernalia needed to ma0e the experiment was obtained !rom the teacher&
Laboratory %lassware was then rinsed with distilled water& This procedure ta0e
place to assure that the apparatus are in %ood and clean position be!ore it is use to
ma0e an experiment&
2& Later on, a burette was clamped to a retort stand&
*& Then, 67 ' solution was !illed into the burette that was clamped onto the retort
stand care!ully to a8oid systematic error& 7 little o! 67 ' solution was !low out o!
the burette 9ust enou%h to dispose the bubble o! air at the bottom o! the burette&
+& The 67 ' solution meniscus le8el was ad9usted to a readin% :ero& /y puttin% the
eye;s at the le8el o! the %raduation, the initial readin% o! 67 ' solution in the
burette was recorded in the result table& This is to a8oid parallax error&
(& <sin% a 2(&0 cm
*
pipette, 67 2 and 67 * solution was pipette and later then
trans!erred into a titration !las0&
6& The titration !las0 was then put at the bottom o! the burette which the burette is
clamped onto a retort stand, but on top o! the white tile&
7& The stopcoc0 that is attached to the burette was open a little 9ust to allow drops o!
67 ' solution to drop into the titration !las0 which consist o! 67 2 and 67 *
solution&
)& 2hile the drops o! 67 ' solution drop into titration !las0, the !las0 was swirl
slowly until the colour o! solution in the conical !las0 chan%e to li%ht pin0&
=& The stopcoc0 was >uic0ly close to pre8ent the !low o! 67 ' solution !rom comin%
out 9ust a!ter the colour o! the solution in the conical !las0 chan%e colour& The
readin% was ta0en and then recorded in the result table&
'0& The procedure was repeated !rom procedure 2 to procedure = about two times 9ust
necessarily to achie8e accurate results&

The titration doesn;t need an external indicator because the solution
itsel! is purple in colour and it will turn colourless once the
reaction is done&
